BHRR's Cherry is AVAILABLE FOR ADOPTION AGAIN! Wonderful home yet, after the home visit, they are not really ready to have a canine, especially a Great Dane in their home at this time.

Cannot say enough GOOD things about this home! Thank you for everything!

Per the transporter of BHRR's Promise to me, this was one of the skinniest dogs that she had ever seen plus transported AND this person has transported dogs like BHRR's Canvas to me – the emaciated and terrified Great Dane.

I was unable to get proper photo's or JUST how emaciated she was….I have two below that I have posted. I did take a video and you can better see starting at 19 seconds and REALLY see at 21 second JUST how bad her body condition is. 🙁

On June 28th, 2013, BHRR's Promise was ON her way with a very kind BHRR approved Volunteer to meet me at KAH.

AND, this was the photo that was sent to myself of 'OPERATION PROMISE' is underway! This was the actual title of the email sent my way! 🙂

BHRR's Cherry is moving under a PENDING ADOPTION!

I will update her blog as I can.

BHRR's Bloom had her special picnic date folks AND here are some of those amazing photos of her DAY! 🙂

Today's BHRR's Zara Adventure!

As I was making my lunch for work today, as, is my habit; I pushed my panini rolls right to the back of my kitchen hutch as I went the foot+ to the fridge and leaned in to grab the ham and lettuce etc.

When I turned around(AND, many have been here and know what a short distance that is…VERY!), BHRR's Zara was actually on top of my hutch and having a great munch on my rolls…..quiet as a mouse she was……

I think BHRR's Journey, would be so proud of her! AND, I would have enjoyed my ham sandwiches as much as I know I would have enjoyed that pot roast that day that BHRR's Journey swiped it…..

I think I am having fresh fruit for dinner at work tonight! AND, a granola bar!

BHRR's Goliath, move over…..you got some major competition here!

She continues to settle in and the mild SA has begun as she is bonding to me and wants me ALL the time. She is learning, as they all do, that her own company is ok….

AND, I have to post my BHRR's Salma & BHRR's Zara story later….

Have I told everyone recently just HOW much I love my life! I really do!!!

AND, here is a VIDEO She is sporting her new collar and and showing that she does have manners….somewhere in there! 😉

SHE is VERY VERY VERY scared of leashes and collars….EXTREMELY!

AND a post made by one of the people here(also an approved Volunteer) that was at our BHRR "EXPERIENCE' Mini Open House on the 22nd:
"Oh BHRR Zara..you have certainly come a long way in such a short time. Way to go!!"

More feedback/comments from transporters and witnesses to her arrival and first few moments at BHRR plus the videos I sent out!

From Rachel:

"Good morning everyone!

It was wonderful to see Zara do a 180 in attitude/personality.

She went from an afraid, confused, mad at the world puppy to one that sought Gwen's affection after a short period of time.

She will thrive under BHRRs care and blossom into the puppy/dog she was meant to be from the start!

Have a great weekend everyone!!

Rachel"

From Pam:

"To watch this pup take her first steps to trust again was simply beautiful.  It truly shows that anything is possible so long as there is someone willing to try.

Knowing Zara is on her way to a safe and happy life is reward enough.

Pam"

UPDATE: I think the completely terrified and severely under socialised NeoX pup that I have called BHRR's Zara is settling in well….

So far, within the last half an hour, she has jumped up on the kitchen counter and pulled down the bag of FROMM I had there for BHRR's Autumn, and then, moving onward after her 'snack', she began to race track in the house followed hot on her heels by The Hobbits, BHRR's Bobby with BHRR's Titus trying valiantly to keep up with his fellow Neo resident!

AND, as she is running, she decides to take a big leap and what perfect timing, right into the dog bowl almost as big as she and sends it flying – full of water of course –

AND, then, it was off to grab one of my doggie blankets yet, to be folded on the table and out the front door she races in the thunderstorm with dogs right behind her and BHRR's Maverick thinks this is just grand and grabs part of the dog blanket and proceeds to run in a different direction when they are outside and 'RIP' the blanket goes, much to the excitement of the other dogs – the smart, well trained ones are inside shaking their heads and paws… – while, the others are having a grand game of chase outside….

THEN, it is do an Olympic style duck around me and back into the house dragging muddy and wet dog blanket in tow with BHRR's Baggins on it, enjoying the ride!

AND, I come into the house and BHRR's Zara is sitting in front of her 'treat' area(I have been hand feeding her kibble and feeding her as treats too), sitting with the best solid sit ever…looking for that treat!

Yup! I think she is settling in well….

AND, where was BHRR's Salma, you may ask??? Well, she was on the couch of course…. :p

UPDATE: 11:53 PM:

UPDATE: She is NOT done with me yet!

In the few minutes it took me to go to the bathroom, she decided that with my PPSS as her partner in crime – he can open the bedroom door FOR I had it closed AND the only one that can do that – that I did not need TWO feather pillows and felt I needed to redecorate my bedroom with the feathers! AND, felt that adding a few to her collar was a great accessory!

Going to be a wild ride with this one…she may just rival BHRR's Goliath yet! WAHOOOOO!

She is terrified of Sean & Mason yet, around 2 AM this morning while I was up working with her, she made that mental sigh that these dogs can do and relaxed a lot with me. I am careful not to push her comfort zone yet, she is finding it ALL on her own…

Her leash manners are good, her house manners severely lacking AND I feel that HQD is 'looking' at me as if to say 'really?!!'

I love them all….and, I have had many 'shades' of terrified and I embrace them all and I had thought I was getting enough exercise….maybe, not. This pups last chance was rescue. She was so set up for failure that she has a history now with the mouthing/biting and I take all of that seriously in ensuring that I rehab her as she needs.

On June 23rd, not only did I send those videos' to those who helped transport her, BUT, I wrote many words of my sheer appreciation of my thanks and offered to reimburse all for gas too.

She is definitely undersocialized and terrified.
She is making leaps and bounds in just the short time I have had her.
She is eating out of my hand, coming to me for affection and reassurance and is doing just fine. She has had water, some food(I am hand feeding her right now) and as I am typing this she is standing right by my side watching me.
I know that this was not the easiest of transports and most likely a ‘first’ for a few and please do know that she is in good hands here and that she is exactly the type of canine that I work so hard to help daily.
I cannot wait to share her progress as she blossoms!

What I posted on our BHRR FB page to one of the transporters(also an approved BHRR Volunteer) re: BHRR's Zara:

I am so happy many were witness to her arrival and then to the beginning of her own wonderful journey with me. Today, I am cleaning her eyes, working on that counter surfing 'bug' she clearly has, touching and petting and gosh, to watch this little lady run…..what a delight! Got another video today with her with the other dogs. She is now fully integrated and sigh…..I think she has taken all four paws and soundly planted them in my heart!!

Below are four videos, two of which, I took of her around 2 AM after her arrival. The other two are in our fenced in yard on the 23rd.

AND, here is a post made on our BHRR FB page, from one of the attendees – Andrea – of our BHRR 'EXPERIENCE' Mini Open House on the 22nd, who also is an approved BHRR Volunteer:

"Watching you interact with little Miss Zara and seeing the progress you gained in only minutes was truly a lesson."

BHRR's Bobby had a GREAT BHRR 'EXPERIENCE' mini open house!!!  BIG hit with all those that attended!

One thing that came to light….the honeymoon period was ending AND, he is a true Giant Sch. Somehow, a high value item – smoked dino butchery bone – had been dropped on the floor and he had not qualms about not wanting to share it with one of the other dogs…NOT, that BHRR's Bloom wanted to share it…. 😉 SHE wanted it herself. He stood up for himself and I took the bone away from him – no issues at all – and that was the real first big moment of that he will not go to a home with a dominant male for as much as this boy is not super dominant, *should* the situation feel warranted in his mind, he will stand up for himself…not a bad thing per say, yet, not something, one wants to see a set-up for failure situation. He has always been submissive to the females and is not 'high' in the male order of things yet, he was prepared to lip curl and make some growling noises over this bone and share some words with her. YET, he will not stand up to even my Bunker Dude(1 year old IW who is as submissive as they come). Very interesting dynamics as always watching the dogs here. 🙂 So, The Dude will often try to take rope toys etc., away and we have to say 'No Dude!'.

He is great with all the dogs here, fully integrated – likes to hump my Multi CH. Show Boy 'big blue' Bronson(AND, Bronson has no issues letting him do it AND we make it stop….immediately!). He stops when you tell him yet, he still will hump at times.

He will more often than not, squat to pee, yet, every once in a while, he will 'show' off and lift that leg.

He is a really super laid back boy…..playful, affectionate and he has full run of the house when we are gone. 100% trustworthy. HE likes to mostly sleep by my side of the bed and LOVES to hog a/c vents! 😉

He shall have exciting news to share within the next month+.

BHRR's Zara transport is today.

Here is what the shelter manager sent my way prior to her transport:

"Gwen, thanks so much for helping this girl. She's a sweet dog and I think will come along well. We sent along a bit of food for a transition and some rope toys if you can use them. She has a martingale in with a microchip tag that is registered to her.

Her eyes have been bothering her the least few days. I sent some Tobrex ointment along – esp for her right eye. That one will definitely need a surgery.

She had tobrex before she started out this morning. No food given, peed and pooped so hopefully she will have a comfortable ride.

Send along any questions and thanks so much."

Transport special instructions given per the Shelter: Bailey is a very fearful pup.  For this reason, she will travel in a provided vari kennel measuring 36” in length x 27” in height and must remain crated for the entire transport.

HERE is what the transporter Pam had to say re: BHRR's Zara's transport and be there at BHRR when I got her out of the crate:

Here is what the last transporter(Pam) had to say after BHRR's Zara arrived to BHRR and I think posted to all involved today on her transport:

"It went well. It was amazing to watch him begin to trust Gwen. Beautiful to watch him allow Gwen to pet him. Definitely a magical moment ????"

*Minor technicality that BHRR's Zara is a 'she', not a 'he' in her post. 😉

She is just very scared, peed, pooped and puked in her crate that she was transported in and pooped in her crate here yet, is all cleaned up, we had a walk, more pets and she had has a drink of water and will wag her tail as I walk to her crate and talk to her. R/Q Rescue was her only and last option and she will require surgery on that one eye, the poor thing…nonstop blinking and running….

From another person, approved Volunteer Rachel that accompanied the transport to BHRR in a separate vehicle and was at out BHRR 'EXPERIENCE' Mini Open House that day:

It was great watching her do a 180 from the terrified pup, who needed tough love to get her out of the crate, to accepting gentle pets from Gwen with a little coaxing and quiet words.

She will blossom under BHRRs care for sure. Can't wait to see her progress.

When I left the open house today, I was certainly more than happy to take a couple companions home lol…one in particular, who became my constant shadow while at BHRR

More feedback re: this transport and BHRR's Zara, from Pamela:
"It went well.  It was amazing to watch him begin to trust Gwen.  Beautiful to watch him allow Gwen to pet him.  Definitely a magical moment ????"

Feedback from Sonyia on this transport:
"I had no doubt Zara is in the right place. I felt so bad for her…………so scared :-("

BHRR's Treasure has been settling in well. He had a good first night and I am getting ready to sign off for his second night – it is now almost 3:00 AM on Friday – so, my second night….

AND, I still think as I said in the video that 'TROUBLE' may be a better name! LOL

He has been integrated with our Kingston, BHRR's Spice, BHRR's Bobby, my PPSS and BHRR's Jetta AND he LOVES BHRR's Jetta! She quite liked him too….even, if she played 'hard to get' in the beginning! They ran and played and zipped and zoomed!

AND, for those who think BHRR's Treasure is tall…BHRR's Jetta has the tall 'edge' on him by a few inches at the whithers with those model legs of hers :)…it is all relative I keep telling people when they think a Great Dane is tall or huge…or, any other Giant for that matter. 😀 He is a good sized boy and by the time he is done rehabbing, he should be taking some serious names with his charm and good looks FOR that is what he is already doing.

Their weights are very comparable right now. The difference is that BHRR's Jetta's weight is healthy, BHRR's Treasure is not yet there. He needs another 20 pounds for the age/body conformation he is right now. He is only one and still growing and going to fill out a lot more AND should put on my height.

He is a bull in a china shop. He has bluffed and huffed and I can see, even intimidated his way to get what he wants or to avoid doing what he wants. He pulls and yanks and just wants things his own way. Well……………welcome to Gwennie's Doggie Boot Camp….BHRR's Salma's too. 😉

AND, he does not want to share the water bowl and less dom dogs like BHRR's Bobby and BHRR's Jetta just let him do what he wants. We will be working on a good strong structure plus foundation for manners 101.

AND, when I corrected him for the bowl resourcing, he had something to say to me about it (GOT to love a GD that talks back…wait, don't almost all of them do??!!! LOL He just has to become more polite about his words and when to use those words and when not too!) and we had a conversation about that too. 😉 All positive based here and I have to earn his respect and trust and he mine. The journey has just begun….

BHRR's Jetta had her annual tonight and she weighed a lovely 51.50 KGs(113.30 pounds) and caught this short BHRR'sJettaJune202013VIDEO with her and Data….a cutie pie kitten owed by one of my fellow KAH team members! 🙂

Great confirmation that SHE is great with cats! 🙂

Ignore our voices….we are amateurs……. 😉

She was so well behaved, quiet in her run and admired by many at KAH tonight! 🙂 Her Vet appointment was a THUMBS up by her Vet! 🙂

BHRR's Jetta is STILL AVAILABLE FOR ADOPTION! 🙂

UPDATE: My last post before I go to bed for a couple of hours is an update on BHRR's Autumn.

As shared with a couple over the last 24 hours, I talked to two of her Vet team plus one of her specialists on Tuesday and I needed to converse about quality of life. To have even uttered those words on a GD that came to me such a 'hot mess', broken and emaciated with many medical conditions, to have come through over 8 months of a miraculous journey with her, telling her daily that she is DESERVING and that she is WORTHY, to adore this dog the way I do…..uttering those words through the huge lump in my throat and the sickness in my stomach was just the worst feeling ever…..

I have promised to each and every dog that crossed my door and heart that they will lack for nothing, that I will always do 'right' by them and it is about quality of life…..

BHRR's Autumn's blog is very detailed with all her updates, photos, videos and the friends and fans she has captured with her paws and heart since we were first contacted to assist her….

Her journey from the States to us was just the beginning….and to be at this point over a bad fall she took slipping on wet grass, is crushing…..something that could happen to any dog, yet, to have happened to her, with her already broken body….was more than devastating.

She has not used her leg in a week, she had been sedated to try and keep her more quiet to get the swelling and edema to go down and to give her time to try and get some healing in, she was off her food, limiting her water intake and that 'almost violent in her affection' Autumn was fading like a beautiful sunset…..

I said that I would bring her back in on Thursday to re-evaluate and on my way home, I called Sean and I told him I need to ask Autumn what she wants….

We had changed her pain management protocol as she was just too doped up and we were having to put two slings on her to help her go outside and she was just not 'her'……I could see how glazed her eyes was, the pain, the weight loss…..and, I needed to try and keep being objective….very hard, when you are so subjectively attached to her…..

People say that a dog will let you know when they are ready…I have had that experience….yet, I have had equally as many experiences that *I* needed to speak on behalf of the animal and do the humane thing…the right thing, the hardest thing ever…..

When I came home, I crawled into her colossal crate and I looked at her….I just sat and asked her what did she want…that, I did not want to be selfish and it was hurting me to see her hurt…..not to see her bigger than life personality just lighting up our home….her happiness, her joy, her everything….

As crazy, as it sounds…4:30 AM and being up almost 21 hours, can make the brain a wee bit fuzzy, yet, her eyes were clearer than they had been in almost a week…..the heavy dose of meds were finally leaving her system, she actually sat up…..and, then she laid a paw on me and put her head on my shoulder and sighed…..and nuzzled me….

When she moved away, I knew what she wanted…..and, I am going to give it to her….she wants more time….

She ate the most that she has done in days….she was almost at her normal water intake and when she peed, she was actually putting her 'bad' foot down to give herself more balance and I only needed one sling to assist her in and out of the house….

I am keeping it 'real'….I know that she is nowhere close to being out of any 'woods'….yet, I am taking it day by day and continuing to try and do things right for her…..quality of life….quality of life….

AND, you know what is the best sound in the world….hearing her snore for the first time in almost a week! She is actually having a good rest…..

Day by Day…….

AND for those looking to donate FROMM FOOD, please note that she has been on FROMM SALMON for many months. She does NOT like the FROMM Whitefish. :(

Yes, he is skinny and could use a good 15-20 pounds yet, he is not in brutal shape. He is a very handsome boy and looking forward in getting to know him!! He was 112.64 pounds when I weighed him tonight.
Thank you Debbie, Joy and Jenn for everything!!
AND, I got to meet the Boxer that we had offered to assist yet, when we learned that he may have another group that stepped up before ours to help; and, that there was another GD in need(the black female I posted)…..I knew we were needed for her!!

WELCOME to BHRR!!!
NOT YET AVAILABLE FOR ADOPTION!

BHRR's Kaden had his re-weigh today and he is now 120.56 pounds! 54.80 kgs.

He was neutered today and he was so worried, the brave boy. He has come a wonderful distance since he first arrived and is a real ham at home and when we have just a few people only over.

I am continuing to work in his terrified state out of our home(has become his safe zone since he arrived) and baby steps….
He has put on almost 23 pounds since he was first rescued!!!

He is one of the softest doggies I have ever felt!! He likes his butt rubbed and he likes to sit in the kids lap when they go to the bathroom and I keep having to tell them to close the door behind them when they go!! LOL

We will re-test his fecal in another couple of weeks for the lungworm that he was diagnosed with.

BHRR's Maverick – KAH June 18th, 2013

BHRR's Fecal Results came back with 'Lung Worm' & Hooks – positive for Capillaria or Eucoleus. All of his bw was within normal parameters and his heartworm test was negative.

He is on treatment – SID for 7 days and then repeat in two weeks for 7 days and he is on Panacur plus Metronidazole.

He has been settling in well and has been successfully integrated with all but three dogs to date!

He is really emerging with a goofy, playful side and one that likes to have me play 'chase' when I call him….. 😉

He is back to the Vet today for a re-weigh and if he is doing well, he is to be neutered. The staff have been made aware that he is nervous of strnagers.

Once, he receives a negative fecal, I will do his vaccines.

I had relatives over on June 10th and he was not scared and had no worries with them around. He was not 100% comfortable approaching them yet, he did not run in fear. His tail was in a nice relaxed state and his body was not emitting tension and so, he is showing that he is settling in quite nicely!

In time, we shall begin our 'outside' of BHRR rehab. He has a TON of potential!

Well I dropped by the shelter tonight to visit with both your dogs.  Firstly, {Treasure} is HUGE.  Thin but boy is he tall.  Good disposition and was very good with me.
{Promise} is petite, very very thin.  She is timid but the good news is that she was in front of the cage and not in the back.  She did shake a lot when I knelt down to speak with her.  She would not make eye contact with me and I let her be as I could see that she was afraid.
Both dogs are thin.  {Promise} more so than {Treasure}.  I know that they will be in great hands….in {Treasure} case..two hands.  The pictures do not do him justice.  He is absolutely breath taking and under your care he will be something of such splendid beauty.
Just thought I would give you an update.  I cannot wait for you to meet them."

On June 17th, 2013, I saw a post for a male Boxer in need….everything about the Boxer was solid and I thought 'someone needs to help him.' Within 18 minutes of the post, I made a post saying that BHRR would step up to assist if needed. Shortly, afterwards, a post was made that another group was looking for a foster spot for him yet, there was another terrified GD in need.

Some things are meant to be. *IF* I had not seen that post(I do not scope through FB often….yet, THINK of all my friends and family very much!), this GD was slated to be pts…

I was told that the information would be emailed my way and photos. Photo's are never hugely important to me for if there is a dog in need, we will help the next one regardless of age, colour, sex, breed etc. 🙂 If the dog has an injury or skin condition that would enable us to better be in a position to prepare to assist, then, we love photo's! 🙂

SOOOOOOOOO, as the person who made the thread post stated, a Boxer saved a Great Dane in need AND she is another BBBBB! 🙂

This is what came my way in an June 17th, @ 6:21 pm from one evaluator:
"2 yr old female dane. Brought in because no time. Left alone 16 hours/day! Nervous, uneasy with people. Uneasy, nervous with other dogs. Apparently was attacked by a pitbull in the past."

AND this was from another evaluator on her in the same email:

"Hi Gwen,
Here is the photo's of the GD female.  She is very nervous and obviously under socialized.  She is uneasy with other dogs and people as well.  She is afraid of everything and needs ALOT of TLC and work.  She by no means a dog that can be sent to a non breed rescue as she needs understanding, alot of time and effort.  This poor girl was left alone for 16 hour days and this would certainly explain her behaviour of being freaked out by anything not familiar.  Apparently she was attacked by another dog in her past, which may also contribute to her nervousness around other dogs.
She was tested to the best of the evaluators ability for food aggression which she ran away from when trying to retrieve the bowl.  Other attempts to evaluate to standard has not been completed because she simply screams in terror.  It is very difficult to give you the full picture.  We believe that when she calms down, gains trust only then will you be able to complete the evaluation with effectiveness.
This girl is a hot mess.   She is absolutely not a candidate for regular adoption.
I do not mean to paint such a horrible picture of this girl, however I do believe that you need to know the whole picture before you consider X.  She is in a pathetic state, shut down, and terrified.
We could not say at this time if she is salvageable, but we do believe that her best chances are with a rescue that has the expertise to accommodate her, to give her the chance to blossom.  The ONLY rescue that we believe can accomplish this would be you.
However, being that this is a very difficult case, we understand fully if you cannot help.  I appreciate your input as always.
If you do wish to consider her for rehabilitation at Birch Haven, we will have her sterilized to try an off set added expenses.
Again I thank you for reading and am open to any input.
Best to you Gwen"

On Monday June 17th, @ 6:30 PM, this was my response:

"I WANT to help her….I so want to HELP her!

I would be so touched to be considered……..

Those eyes…..poor girl…she is so tormented….."

On Monday June 17th @ 6:34 PM, I received the following:

"Hi Gwen.
You are the only one we would consider.  We cannot send her anywhere else.
Thank you so very much Gwen.  It is of course a HUGE YES.
We can get her sterilized.
Let me know.
And thank you once again Gwen."

Arrangements were made for June 28th, 2013 for her to come to BHRR. This gave the Shelter time to alter her.

I am calling her BHRR's Promise for while I go in with my eyes wide open, I am staying so very positive for her and saying that she is 'full of promise'. EVERY dog deserves a chance…..this is what my promise is to her in turn too…to give her everything I have and am to give her this opportunity for her own forever loving home! 🙂

UPDATE: BHRR's Autumn is not doing well. Crate Rest and lots of meds are not greatly assisting her at this time.

She is understandably weight bearing all on her other leg and with that having also a torn ACL prior to coming to BHRR, it is just not able to keep trying to compensate for both back legs now.

She is not eating well nor drinking normally.

I am worried. I am very concerned.

I have conversed with one of her Vets and so, a new pain management schedule is in place and I said I would give her another 24 hours yet, would be bringing her in as I am worried…..

The swelling plus edema is so bad.

Icing and massaging as per the treatment plan too.

Please, may I ask that all her fans and friends send her positive thoughts and energy.

I adore this dog as much a life itself and I committed from day 1 to her wellbeing and she has come so far in her journey to date and she has a long way still to travel and my wish is for her to be able to travel that journey to a success chain of success chapter one day…..

Below are two of her x-rays taken on June 14th, 2013

Thank you from my soul and beyond for any possible consideration to her care……even a $1 donation is super!! :)

AND for those looking to donate FROMM FOOD, please note that she has been on FROMM SALMON for many months. She does NOT like the FROMM Whitefish. :(

BHRR's Autumn – June 14th, 2013 @ KAH

On Sunday June 16th, BHRR's Bobby came with us to Take The Plunge Ottawa – sadly, the event was rained out by 1 PM AND yet, it did give me another opportunity to observe and witness new behavours from him.

IF he was NOT allowed to visit a dog (sometimes) a person on 'his' terms, he would bark and wag his tail. This one BC really did not like him and the more that BC snarled and lunged, the more BHRR's Bobby play bowed and wagged his tail and barked. I sometimes think BHRR's Bobby 'thinks' he is a Golden Retriever…. 😉 AND, he LOVED all the water! LOL

The same when we were back at our booth. By the time, we left, he was much more settled and the work began to 'teach' him that not all is on his terms and that inappropriate behavours will not be rewarded.

He LOVED all kids he met too! OMG! HE LOVED them! The Hobbits came with me this day too and BOTH of them just rocked it! THEY are so amazing!!! So far they have traveled themselves!

My jumping up and down and yaying and yesing post for today!!! It is a MASSIVE one!!

The Lion King of BHRR's Timon wishes to shout out that today marked week 16 of his miraculous journey of LIFE!

He says he is no longer counting days!! He is into 16 weeks aka 4 MONTHS of thriving beautifully experienced filled living life to the fullest of his MMMM movement!!

Just thinking about him brings a big lump of powerful with the best tears of emotion to my throat and heart!! The best kind of feelings!! So much love for my Lion Kings!

BHRR's Timon – Montreal March 23rd, 2013

Please keep our 'hot mess' BHRR's Autumn in your thoughts today….
She had a slip on the wet grass and she is not weight bearing on her one back leg. It is very swollen.
Instead of BHRR's Kaden coming to work with me today; I have brought her instead and will update as I know more….  🙁

There is nothing we have not done for her to date that she has needed and there is nothing we will not do for her that she may need. I adore her.

UPDATE: June 14th, 11:00 AM:
UPDATE: So, BHRR's Autumn has been examined and even in the time from when I arrived with her to when the Vet saw her, the swelling plus edema(especially in her knee and hock) has significantly grown.
The heat radiating from her leg is unbelievable.
AND despite all, for those who know her, they will understand when I say that she is still 'violent' in her love and affection for me and charm to others!
AND while we wanted to give her NSAIDS, she is on Vanectyl P and there could be the development of stomach ulcers.
I asked to do x-rays and go from there.
AND then, the concern comes that as good as she is, for her safety and comfort – the bending of her leg and knee would be painful; she would need some sedation to do the x-rays. Her history wtih three past sections has ranged from various degrees of scary. They hit her hard and with her positional heart murmur.
Yet, we needed to know if there was a break or fracture.
So, we went with an even lower dose of the torb/ace and monitored her heart throughout.
Next update coming soon!! Keep her in your thoughts!!

UPDATE: June 14th, 1:43 PM:
UPDATE: review of the x-rays for BHRR's Autumn has revealed no fractures or breaks….phewwwww….that is the good news…
The bad news is that it is likely that when she went down, she caused significant trauma to her PCL. So, the leg that was chronic from her ACL tear prior to coming to BHRR, has additional damage now.
AND, as we know, her left leg also has an ACL tear prior to coming to BHRR.
After much discussion and research, the decision has been made to take her off the Vanectyl P, put her on Tramadol, Gabapentin, Previcox and Sulcrate……
With her not so best stability due to her two blown cruciates, the chances of additional injuries was not uncommon…..
I will update her blog and please keep her in your thoughts…
She needs more weight to be able to have any surgery and we were getting there….finally….
This is a huge step back as due to the pain, her weight gain is going to stall yet, I am at least happy to know what is happening….
She will be a million dollar dog when all is said and done and her worth is priceless!!!

BHRR's Autumn came to us with two blown ACL's. She now has a blown PCL. We have done many TPLO's and Extracapsular surgeries and have had wonderful success. BHRR's Autumn's situation is not the norm with this positional HM, her continued unanswered medical question of the lack of weight gain plus that she does not recover from sedation and anaesthetics well.

Thank you from my soul and beyond for any possible consideration to her care……even a $1 donation is super!! :)

AND for those looking to donate FROMM FOOD, please note that she has been on FROMM SALMON for many months. She does NOT like the FROMM Whitefish. :(

BHRR's Autumn – recovering from her sedation post-x-rays – June 14th, 2013 @ KAH

THINK good thoughts for The Hobbits as later today – Thursday June 13th is their TWINKLE removing surgery! 🙂

Depending on how they are feeling, they may be with us at TTP on day this weekend.

UPDATE: June 13th Afternoon:

UPDATE: The Hobbits had their neuters today and everything went great! Their hips were thoroughly examined while they were under and thumbs up for both!!
Both did have car sickness again on the way into KAH and they still could both outgrow that.
BHRR's Bilbo is now 44.22 pounds
BHRR's Baggins is now 39.82 pounds
Both are off fluids and just took them out and no pees yet…..
So cute they are!

They did not get sick on the way home!

BHRR's Baggins still does not menace normally yet, he is doing fantastic! He tracks and nothing is holding him back! Decreased or absent menace response means, he does not blink when a hand is waved toward the eyes.

BHRR's Baggins & BHRR's Bilbo – Just as I was ready to drive home from KAH!

I would like to see BHRR's Bobby eat more….. He just is not eating the way I would like him too. He is sleeping well, drinking well, no diarrhea and is still wanting to hump a dog here or there YET, he has also been wonderfully integrated with all but three dogs here to date. He loves hanging out behind my computer chair the best while I work.

That makes it a wee bit hard to get away from my computer…something Sean has been 'on me' for years……to stop working such crazy insane hours!!!

If all goes well, BHRR's Bobby shall be at Take The Plunge at our BHRR Booth on Sunday June 16th.

On June 7th, 3:24 PM:  I received the following email:

"I have this 1 yr old unfixed male dane. He was surrendered because the guy didn't have time for him. Very good with other dogs, a bit growly with people–not to be aggressive-it's more insecurity I think. He is being walked by our volunteers. I tested for food and he did lift his lip but no growling and I could take the food from him. He has very little manners and is very strong-difficult to walk. He definitely needs experienced people. Do you think Gwen would be interested?"

On June 7th, 4:13 PM: I responded with:

"Can you give me 24 hours to work on this one? J
We would love to help…I just need about 24 hours or so.

Gwen
BHRR
"

On June 7th, 4:27 PM: I received:
"OMG Gwenn, YES!!!! YES.
This is not for next week any ways.  He needs to be fixed which will not be until next week".

We then went back and forth as I was only originally able to assist by the end of the week of June 21st and that was getting too long for the Shelter as they were hurting for space. We worked out that I could get him on the 17th yet, then, that did not work for scheduling for others and so, after all was said and done, we planned for Wednesday June 19th!

I decided to call him 'TREASURE' as his previous O. had no time for him and he may have been their trash but MY Treasure!

I wanted to add 2 VIDEOS taken last night on my way to KAH with BHRR's Kaden. As his other blog post was beginning to get a wee bit long, I am starting a new one.

There shall be much to read on his blog for all as it now goes back to May 22nd and will be all updated! 🙂

BHRR's Kaden – June 5th, 3013 – Keeping his eye on my and then he had a snooze!

For him to snooze, means he is getting really comfortable with me!!!! AND, so fast! 🙂 I am humbled……just humbled. Someone did a real 'number' on this boy…completely undersocialised and dealt with a heavy hand.

NOT any longer my dear sweetie! NOTHING but helping hands moving forward!

AND, he has been integrated successfully with 14 dogs to date WITHOUT any issues!!! 🙂

UPDATE: BHRR's Bobby is hanging out at KAH and having a really good day!

Auntie Margaret came by and was able to meet him, love on him and give him assurance that he will be ok. What a great auntie!!

He had a thorough exam – heart, lungs, eyes etc. got a thumbs up and talk about rocking his commands – very smart bilingual boy!!

He was microchipped, had a heartworm test and will begin heartworm preventative, I am doing a fecal and proactively de-worming him.

His weight was a slightly thin 36.6 kgs(80.52 pounds) and I would like to see him around 85-87. He will put it on!

Once he settles in more(he is already bonding well to me!), he will put on that weight.  His HWT and Fecal are both negative that we know of to date.

Everything has checked out wonderfully. He is 5.5 years of age and the Vet kept commenting how amazing he was in health and condition and with a bit more weight, he will be just that much better.

He can be wonderfully playful and I am getting glimpses into a really delightful personality!

AND here is a BobbyJune62013VIDEO!

One more reason to LOVE BHRR's Salma!!

She has completely taken BHRR's Bobby under her 'paw'….

She has and is going to accomplish ten times more in ten times less the time than myself.

She has even managed to get him to play…..how precious is that!

For him to be able to let all his own confusion and grief go for even a small period of time to just play; is all to a most wonderful MM DOGO named 'Salma'.

She lays near him and showed him where the water bowl was( no matter that I had already done that… …..and has been showing him where the fridge is for the treats and the window ledge where other treats are kept.

She will sit and look at me either in front of the fridge or in front of the section on the window ledge where those treats are and give me the 'Salma' stare!

LOL I 'get it Salma!!'

Welcome to BHRR Bobby!!

On June 5th, I received the following assessment report on who I am calling BHRR's Zara. I think based upon this 'minor' supposed bite history, it is important to attach as full disclosure from the shelter. This shelter has the benefit of having 1.5 trainers on site.

Welcome to BHRR Bobby!!

On June 5th, I brought in BHRR's Kaden to KAH with me.

He was 115.94 pounds, had a hwt, presurgical bw, we microchipped, had a thorough exam and we re-visited his bloody stools. I also got some more metronidazole and he will be on a 7 day course treatment(I began on Sunday) and then repeat 3 days in two weeks. His bite wounds(suspected to be bite wounds) on his head and rump are healing very well! 🙂

I have been de-worming him on Panacur since Saturday night and will do another two days.
I will not vaccinate him until he is healthy and puts on a few more pounds – we estimate that he has put on about 17 pounds since he was first rescued by his angels – May 22 – June 5th and he has about another 20 to go.

I did tentatively schedule his neuter on June 18th, 2013 for I believe he is around 15 months of age and time to let go of those twinkles!

Several remarked on how bonded he was to me already in just the short time that I have had him and that I just have this very special way about me with animals. THAT was sweet! 🙂 I love BHRR's Kaden too and am quite taken with him! 😉 I think it is very mutual! 🙂

Others were in awe over his chocolate merle colouring and I explained the genetics and why this colour should not be bred for. He has one of his eyes that is 'cracked' – partially blue and partially brown. I explained the genetics of that too.

BHRR's Kaden – June 1st, 2013 – Arrival to BHRR

I think I have just born witness to one of the most difficult Owner Surrenders EVER in 25 years of being in these trenches.

I now have BHRR's Bobby in my care and the good-byes of his two owners to him was so emotionally painful…..

I promise to do as right by this boy as I do with each and every dog that I commit BHRR to.

Gosh….my heart is weeping for them…

His surrender is proof that good people have to let their dogs go and that to do so is really a huge act of love.

On my way home now and heart is very heavy….. 🙁

Update: 10:30 PM June 4th:
I am now home and he is naturally worried and confused. He is glued to me as I am that 'link' between the here/now and the was/then.

He needs a few more pound and the owners are surrendering him due to a very unfortunate/tragic change in their home and can no longer fulfill his needs.

This home took him to be groomed before they met me, they updated his vaccines, they gave me Bobby's two bed pads and blanket, two bags of food, his food stand and bowls, his 'eating ball' to put into the bowl as he eats too fast. I said they did not have to do any of that as we would; yet; they insisted.

They never have done heartworm testing or used preventative (they said they never really understood all of that) and I said I would more than be happy to do that and a fecal and take a good look at his teeth and do any other bloodwork etc. They were quite honest with me re: the difficulty he has been to do nails, his 'fetish' for bicycles and they loved him.

You cannot 'fake' that kind of emotion or anguish of pain on their faces. If you look at two of the photos posted on the 'hopeful' album; they took him swimming and held the best birthday parties for him….this was a hard one for me.

I had been conversing for months with them, hoping and trying to help in anyway possible and wishing for them to keep him yet, their current circumstances just do not.

Life can be so unfair……I promised I would keep them updated and I will.

BHRR's Bobby – June 4th, 2013 @ BHRR

This is how he liked to hang last night…under my legs as I worked on my iPhone at the couch.
He had an 'ok' night. He finally crashed for a few hours around 3:00 AM today and his day has been 'ok' as well.
He has mild SA and working through that too…..
ISN'T HE HANDSOME!

BHRR's Cherry had her special picnic date on Saturday June 1st!

Here are some photos! She helped me make the picnic! 😉

THANKS to her amazing dates for giving her a great experience!

AND here are some words from her special dates:

"….Dickenson Day in Manotick on Saturday.  She was fantastic in the crowd and all the kids wanted to pet her!  She's a very, very good girl!  We had a lot of fun with her!  : )

Thanks for the yummy picnic too!"

The Hobbits are at work with me today for their last boosters plus presurgicial bw for their neuters. They are now 16 weeks old!
Baggins is now 36.3 pounds – up from 24.42 pounds a month ago
Bilbo is now 40.04 pounds – up from 27.5 pounds a month ago
At the rate they are growing, we are looking at big boyz!!

Both are still experiencing some car sickness and they could still outgrow this…..

They did not get sick at all on the way home.

We were also not able to draw their blood today as their veins were very wiggly and so, after a few pokes, we ended trying do while under sedation the day of their neuter.

Here is a VIDEO of them both today at KAH!

Several months ago, I was contacted to take in an o/s of a Giant Schnauzer – 5.5 years of age – Birthday in October of 2007.

Due to unfortunate changes in the home, his needs were no longer able to be met. This was a very difficult one for me. This was a very loved dog – the had him for over three years, before that, he was with this couple's mechanic who got this dog from a woman who had breast cancer.

They took him swimming, had the best birthday parties for him, groomed him and loved him yet, despite all efforts they were not able to keep him.

After many months back and forth, BHRR's Bobby was scheduled to come to BHRR on June 2nd, 2013. Due to having to bring another one of our new additions in for bloody diarrhea(BHRR's Kaden who had arrived on June 1st), June 2nd was rescheduled to June 4th.

BHRR's Bobby – Photos from his previous owners, prior to coming to BHRR

On Sunday June 2nd, BHRR's Kaden had his first poop and it was bloody diarrhea, two photos below.

I emailed the photos to both of his rescue angels saying that I believe he has parasites. I was emailed back that he was given Revolution, Strongid T and one dose of metronidazole per one of their Vets recommendations to give him this one dose as it was most likely stress related.

I responded saying that stress can exasperate a medical condition and that I strongly suspect parasites being the underlying cause and he is already on Panacur since he arrived at BHRR and will begin a longer course of metronidazole. At least 7 days worth. I brought in a sample of his fecal.

BHRR's Kaden's energy level has been good, he is eating and drinking well.

His is TERRIFIED when people touch his rump and back. He is not so keen on people touching his face yet, when he arrived on June 1st, I just opened up the door to Rachel's car and talked to him and then took a seat on the grass…within minutes he poked his head out and then stepped out of the car and sniffed me many times.

BHRR's Kaden's(saw this name on a movie watched the night before!) transport to BHRR was today.

Update: 11:32 AM:

"We have left Kitchener and are on the way to Toronto.
He takes a bit to transfer and is very nervous.
Alex"

There were a couple of emails from two people as there was a storm approaching, and, I responded to all to say that the more normal people are, the better it is for all and that I strongly advise double leashing this boy between vehicle transports. I always advise my BHRR Volunteers to do that as is and not all of the amazing people that were helping on this transport had experience with Great Danes or in helping BHRR with a transfer.

Update: 12:37 PM:

"He is on his way from Weston Road.
Firm and confident with this boy – he is a softy and will warm up after a few minutes.
Doesn't like traffic so the quieter the transfer spot the better."

Update: 12:51 PM:
"Excellent. Thanks Gwen for the words I was looking for- the more normal the routine the better. Yep. He is a sponge right now picking up on our energies. I am so excited for him. J

Update: 1:55 PM:
"Safe transfer at port hope. He really is very sweet, just nervous. Very quiet in the car."

Update: 4:09 PM:

"Hi everyone,

I have "Hobo" safely with me and we are on the way to Birch Haven.

Thanks and have a great weekend!!

Rachel"

Update: 5:10 PM:

"Thank you so much for keeping me in the loop. I had a little break down this morning. I will miss him but know he is going to the best place for him to make a new start. Became very attached to him and he really does fall in love if just given a chance to bond. Thanks for all the great people who are involved in helping this lovely boy.

Danielle"

Update: 5:17 PM:

"It certainly wasn't the easiest transport I've ever done, but only because he is so nervous of people.  Shifting such a large dog out of a vehicle when he doesn't want to go required a combination of cajoling, muscle power and bribery with large cookies.  A two person job for sure.  Underneath that fear there is a lovely boy.  I don't know much about Danes, but I doubt they are all as spooked as he is?  Makes me wonder what happened to him before rescue.  That makes me sad.  I know that he's on the road to a wonderful life.

Hilary"

My update sent at 10:11 PM:

UPDATE: On our beloved 'hot mess' BHRR's Autumn!
She is at KAH today with me over last night and she has put on another 5.94 pounds!!!!
To some, and for those not familiar with her story, this may not seem like much yet, it is HUGE!!! Just HUGE!
She is now 116.16 pounds(52.8 kgs)!!
If I can get another 10 pounds on her, 15 preferably, we can schedule that first of two possible cruciate repairs!!
To all those that wanted us to 'give up' on her, that chastised us for spending the thousands we have on her to date – cardiac u/s, abdominal u/s, specialists, treatments for so many things including all my work determining her food allergies and now discovering her seasonal allergies – I can only say that the mandate of BHRR is to help the next in need.
AND that we focus on those special needs!
AND we will continue to be committed to BHRR's Autumn's welfare!!
It is not her fault that she was bred and bred and that both of her cruciates blew and we left untreated, that she was so neglected and abused that her body score was barely a 2/2.5…..
I could almost weep that finally, finally I am getting all of these puzzle pieces to fall into place to keep moving forward with her journey and for her to one day have a great forever adoptive home of her own!
GO BHRR's Autumn GO!! So happy to see this weight gain!!
