BHRR’s Salma – April 2004 – August 8th, 2015
HQD(Her Queenship Divine)

As many know, BHRR is a rehabilitation and haven program. We work to make each dog the best that they can be and, we always take in the next dog in need of us.

We adopt out those that we can and our focus is on making each dog the best dog they can be and adoptions are wonderful yet, if a dog is deemed not adoptable for medical and/or behavioural reasons, they remain in our Haven Program for life. We focus on the special needs and assist all those that we can, giving them quality of life from the moment they arrive……..

We have our ever popular and long-standing Visitation and Play Date program that enables each dog to experience the world in so many different fabu and beautiful ways, up and beyond what we do daily at BHRR.

The hard part of rescue and in reality in general, is when a dog needs to be humanely crossed over…….the devastation, the overwhelming depth of pain over the hearbreaking loss of any dog or horse in our programs, is the part of the world that I would rather wished we did not have to experience or go through….for the animal and for the humans that love them…..

We live in a place that we can humanely cross over those we love, cradled warmly with so much adoration in our arms, blessing them in the fall of the teardrops filled with so much heartfelt emotion…..

BHRR’s Salma, HQD was one of the last dogs still fighting the good battle over contaminated donated by another group back in January.

A Dogo and dog LIKE none other, boy, did she keep me rocking on my toes!

She showed Cancer who was boss, and a dog that was expected to die shortly after her arrival into Rescue(February 2013) after being diagnosed with a MCT and having an emergency surgery, she took the medical world by storm…..

She took no prisoners this one…..she ruled the world and each day, took me on a journey of lessons that I will never forget, hands being thrown up in helpless laughter over and over due to her antics and the constant ‘selective hearing!.’

She was the best doctor/nurse any dog or person could have, she demonstrated to me many a time how to ‘properly’ tuck in a dog with one of her special blankets, how a dog bowl could never have even a drop of dog drool on it, how if a nano second went by and the dog bowls were not filled up, one would be dropped  at my feet as a ‘gentle’ reminder!

The way that she would just sit there and look at me with that facial expression that screamed ‘ok, human, I know you have some potential and are NOT that stupid…..you will ‘get this’ make me feel more grounded than anything else I have ever experienced. I could always just picture her as if she had her arms crossed, eyes rolling and the one foot tapping as my brain frantically worked through all the options as to what HQD was trying to tell me.

No amount of formal education of degrees or work experience will ever have taught me more than this amazing Dogo did during her time with us…..

A Mama to the end………she taught these dogs in our programs more about trust, learning to live, being a dog, that it was ok to not be perfect, that mistakes are going to happen and you will not be beaten, screamed at or hurt…….than I could ever have done…..

Having lost our Dollface and main leader female dog, BHRR’s Dana is December of 2012, HQD coming in February of 2013 was what my home and programs needed…..she was the bomb……I knew as I was driving home and someone had called me on my drive home the day she arrived and was asking me about her and how I felt she woudl fit in and I said BHRR’s Salma is what was so dearly needed in my home….she would right order, help the confused, the worried, the stressed and the hurting……….she would be the perfect fit for what had been missing since BHRR’s Dana’s own tragic loss and bring her own flair, style and touch.

AND boy, did she ever!!!

HQD, my heart shattered into a million pieces when it was your time to cross-over yet, I know you will always be there on my shoulder, that voice in my head and your legacy in memories, lessons and so much more shall live on forever….

You touched a world……..you came from the darkest of pasts and yet, your shining beautiful light was never squashed by any of that……

I miss you so much……..as I find myself sadly saying too much in 2015, I will see you in my dreams…….

RIP the one and ONLY HQD

Back in December, Fran from Global Pet Foods Bank Street (1176 Bank Street) phoned plus emailed us to inquire as to our thoughts in being the rescue to benefit from the annual Global 'Show Us Your Heart' Campaign.https://www.facebook.com/GlobalPetsBank
Fran said that they have been following some of the great work that BHRR has been doing and, wanted to direct funds raised during their annual campaign in 2015, our way.
To say that we felt humbled and deeply honoured, was putting it lightly. We feel so privileged to have been chosen by Global Pet Foods Bank Street, out of so many out there in the community doing such much needed and essential work helping animals…….
This exciting campaign begins January 31st and shall run through to February 14th, 2015
If you visit their store, you can make a donation in any amount you desire, and, you can write your name or that of your beloved pet(s) on a beautiful red heart and, it will be displayed with such pride and thanks at their store!
All monies raised shall go towards BHRR's Gretta's Vet Bills – she took a bad fall at her approved temp foster home and, we have to now repair the cruciate in her back left leg. Her surgery is January 29th at Liston Animal Hospital. It was the first surgical date we could get…….
Thank you Global Pet Foods Bank Street AGAIN for selecting our small r/q Rescue to support……be it $5 or $50 or more that is raised during your annual campaign, it will mean the world to us!!! AND, to BHRR's Gretta!
Barry, thank you SO much again for working with me on this poster. It is gorgeous!

Thank you for your continued understanding – The BHRR Team

I cannot believe that I never got HQD's December 14th, 2013 Santa PAWS photo posted! HOLY! Here it is! 🙂 Doesn't she look oh, so impressed! 😀 She is with one of her very special made with such love 'HQD Blankets'.

AND, I consider it a wonderful miracle to still have her with us. I was worried that she may not make our last BHRR 'EXPERIENCE' Mini Open House of 2014, yet, she is determined to keep trying to kick Cancer's butt! YOU go girl! So many cannot wait to see you again!

She has been losing some weight and, I thought I may lose her about 10 days ago, yet, she rallied back strong and feisty and, is keeping me in her bootcamp strong and true to her style! LOL

BHRR PV Sept 21 Lg

Today's wonderful 'feel good' mushy moment for today! 😀

A Gwennie Novel one!  😉

BHRR's Triumph, the emaciated and terrified GD puppy that had been beaten, starved and found in an abandoned apartment building finally had enough bravery and courage to do what he has been slowly working up for some time….sleeping out of his crate and, coming into the master bedroom to spend the night.

Over the past couple of weeks, you could tell he wanted to stay in the master bedroom and sleep there yet, when it came time for bed, he would look at the bedroom and at his crate on the main area and back, at the bedroom and, when quietly, calmly and positively encouraged to come in, he would take one or two steps towards the bedroom but, then would scurry towards his crate and lay down in the corner. We have been leaving the crate door open for some time now and, he has proven 100% trustworthy in our home, and, so, we would tell him we loved him and to have a good sleepie and, that we would see him in the AM. We would passively ignore and, make no big deal out of his fear.

The last several nights, he would come into the bedroom, lay down on a Costco dog bed or Kuranda bed and, just as we would urn the lights off(we do leave a night light on), he would get up and walk to the door and, sit watching us. We would then open up the door and, tell him that we loved him and, to have a good sleepie and, we would see him in the AM. We could see how torn he was and, in the AM, more often than not, he would be laying on a dog bed right outside our bedroom….compliments most likely of HQD(BHRR's Salma).

Well, guess what he did last night?!!! He was so brave and full of courage!!! He went into the bedroom in determination with HQD right by his side and, we just knew that this time, it would be a different experience for all of us that night……for HQD to 'give up *her* couch' for a night(yes, I am well aware that she gets on the couch at night when we are asleep…heck, she does it right in front of my face!  ) LOL – we knew, that this night would be super special.

In preparation, I did have to make one 'change' to the schedule and, that was to haul HQD's bed in and, she had her special blankets already in her mouth dragging them alongside her. It only took me 10 minutes to 'figure' it out(stupid human I know) just exactly where HQD wanted HER bed set-up….sigh….  Just how does she 'put up with me?!'

AND, we were right….inside we may have been filled with excitement yet, on the outside, the norm it was in routine and, as we shut off the lights, we heard a motion and, then, as we turned on the lights, we saw HQD had moved from her own pile of special HQD blankets and, was laying on a Kuranda bed with BHRR's Triumph and, had a blanket half on him.

AS, I apparently interrupted her progress, I got the 'stare' (ONLY how HQD can give!) and, then she turned her back on me, got BHRR's Triumph all tucked in and, then tucked herself in and, lay next to him….

Soon, snores from her could be heard and yes, she may be royalty BUT she sure can saw those logs!  😉

Wish I had my phone with me as, I would have snapped a photo. Then again, maybe, I do not wish to have had it with me for HQD would be most displeased to have her beauty sleep affected! LOL

He slept the whole night and, only got me up around 5 AM to begin the day.

Beaming over here!!! Beaming! AND, HQD BHRR's Salma can put me in her bootcamp ALL she wants for, that she is one amazing dog!!
I wonder what tomorrow shall bring?! Love my life!

Happy rainy duck weather Tuesday from BHRR and HQD and BHRR's Triumph!

Two of the lovely BHRR ladies taken August 1st, 2014!
BHRR's FREEDOM Dane BHRR's Gretta(Available For Adoption!) & the one and ONLY HQD(BHRR's Salma, one of our amazing M&M's – working on 10.5 years young).

AND yes, on my one couch….sigh…. 😉 cheeky

One a side note, BHRR's Gretta is doing well from when she was hurt under another's care back in March. Thank you to all that brought it to our attention while we were away and, Sarah D. for bringing her into KAH for treatment!

FINAL (Medium)

Today, has been a very emotional day for a number of reasons yet, I wanted to share a good and, in fact, great emotional moment with all….

This AM while laying in bed surrounded by such amazing therapy puppy loving, I look down and I see BHRR's Moncton standing quietly by the bed.

I reach down ever so careful with a hand and, he nudged it! This terrified and scared boy for the first time since he has arrived to BHRR, actually initiated physical contact and, actively sought it out……HUGE! Massive step forward…..
Inside I was jumping up and down in happiness plus excitement, outside I was casual and, calm and hoped my hand was not shaking too much.
When he had enough, he looked towards me(it shall be a long time before this poor boy will ever feel comfortable looking at the face, let alone eyes of someone ) – he has been that traumatized. One day, I hope he learns that when he gazes into the eyes of a loved one, that loved one will NEVER interpret it as dominance or challenging behaviour. Not all dogs who look upon their owners are staring and being dom…
AND overlooking the whole interaction was HQD and, I think – and, it could just be a trick of the light or my imagination – yet, I think I got a sign of rare approval from her!! LOL
I think she came with him for moral support for she walked right by his side as he came into the master bedroom and she, walked right by his side as he left…..
She is a real special miracle 10 year old Dogo!

HQD wants to share some photo's just taken! 🙂 Well, she may not want them even taken but, they are awesome, so, I am posting! She continues to go on strong and, I am keeping my eyes peeled for more special blankets for her. That is her biggest pleasure plus comfort and after being denied almost 9 years of her life from spoiling and loving care, she is going to get them! So, please, if, anyone, knows of where I can find some 'Salma' blankets, let me know!

At the age of now over 10, the Dogo that we thought we were going to lose late last year, has bounced back from what I discovered was a nasty UTI and not her Cancer and, she is looking great, doing great and, making me proud. Well, maybe, not for the 'Boot Camp' part! LOL She now has BHRR's Ethel trying to get up on the couch…sigh….LOL

We keep working on those long nails and through time, they are getting much shorter plus, the years of abuse of her licking her feet and legs are slowly beginning to lessen with the stains of her saliva. Underneath is a beautiful soft and glorious coat of a clean white dog. 🙂

The first photo is of her sleeping and the next is when she opened her eyes as I 'disturbed' her rest with my iPhone to snap the pictures. HEE! She is SOOOOOOOOOOOO expressive without even saying a word or making a sound.

This post is LONG overdue! 🙂

HQD celebrated her 10th birthday on April 1st, 2014!!! YUP! 10th!!! Another one of our M&M’s(Miracle Mastiffs)! 🙂 The Dogo that could not walk one week prior to coming to BHRR, not only walks, yet does her wobbly bobbly trot(in honour of BHRR’s Emma, I just KNOW it!) yet, is still alive LONG after any Vet or Specialist thought she would be. AND, for all in attendance at our most recent BHRR ‘EXPERIENCE’ Mini Open House, they saw firsthand how THRIVING this dog is doing!

LOVE her…gosh, she tests and trials me and we keep going back and forth between whose ‘boot camp’ is reigning supreme(AND, yes, I know whose side all of you are on! LOL) and, I love her….love love love her!

AND, she remains a very special dog to those at BHRR. She has been watching over BHRR’s Porridge…dragging her own bed over to him and only putting her head down to sleep when, he is finally able to do so. I think he almost feels she is smothering him for the number of times, he gets up and walks away and, then she is right back there, bed in tow(AND, god forbid I go to move it for her! Her looks would burn me to dust! LOL), and laying back down and watching him. I have to admit, it would make me a bit disconcerted also, having someone so close to me, watching and and watching and barely blinking until I went to sleep! Yet, it is HQD, that best nurse, therapist, doctor, EVER to the rescue again!

She is also proving her usual fabu inspirational self when it comes to BHRR’s Leroy, the newest addition to BHRR – the emaciated fawn GD. She will almost ‘herd’ him to the water bowl as, if telling him to drink. AND, no, I am not humanizing her. She is human ALL on her own. AND, when it comes to eating, she will eat her food and then, go over to his crate and let me tell you, if she could tap her foot, she would and if, she could cross her front legs as if they were arms, she would, for, until he is done eating – AND, he does not eat fast and not much at any given time as I am feeding him small meals up to 8 times a day, yet, also tends to pick – she does not leave. Yet, each time, he eats, she sits there and gives the look to all that cross her path to ‘back off’ and, making sure he eats. Welcome to BHRR, Leroy! You have been accepted and, are now part of Salma’s ‘mama’ ‘doctor’ ‘therapist’ ‘nurse’ heart/soul! 🙂

I am going to have to see about getting more special blankets for her as, she has her current ones in special spots(in her mind!) and if I move one from one place, she gives me that special ‘oh gwennie, you sure are a mere human’ look of pity and that big sigh that she works right up from the depths of her soul, and moves her blankets back to where she wants. AND, when she obtains a new fav spot to add to her list(getting longer!), I have to search for a ‘new’ special blanket for her. She has three right now and, so, for all of her fans, if you think of any special blankets out there, let me know! LOL I will be sure to snatch them up….she has particular taste that is all HQD!

BRRH 2014 March 053
BHRR’s Salma – Her Queenship Divine – March 13th, 2014

GENTLE REMINDER & UPDATEThis event will NOW also be used to also help BHRR’s Porridge – Rushed into KAH March 19th for when I returned from being out of the country, he was not well. He had dropped 3 KGs(6.6 pounds) – he is down to 74 KGs, had a nasal discharge, flared nostrils, no temp yet, belly breathing and could not breathe with his mouth closed, had not drank anything in over 24 hours, minimal eating, lethargic, swollen lymph nodes and, could not rest on his side(his fav resting spot).

PORRIDGE VET RESULTS TO DATE: Full exam done, lungs sounded ok, did a full blood work up including a heart blood test(awaiting results, we could not use Dormitor(if he did have a heart condition, this would be not in his best interest) to sedate for x-rays and the Torb barely took his anxiety edge off(we were not able to do his nails as he needs the Dorm also to sedate him) and, we could only get the right lat for x-rays yet, the heart on that side look almost completely normal. There was no noticeable bulge or significant enlargement yet, we had to take four shots to get his full chest and lungs just of the one side and the left side could not be completed at this time. We took biopsies of his lymph nodes, heart rate was elevated. The staff there noted how poor his energy level was from his norm ‘must maim with my happy tail and enthusiasm hyper harle happy boy ‘tude’ and while, he did eat some wet canned food, he had a hard time trying to eat anything dry and could only take one dry piece of T/D that was offered to him. The Vet has prescribed Doxy for him 4 tabs BID of the 100 mg IN case it may be infection related yet, he would not be presented ‘classically’ if that were the case. Yet, we are being proactive from all angles.

He went down hill so fast while I was away and, I thank all for monitoring him and I have trusted and do trust that those that were here, did keep his best interest at heart and, did not see fit to bring him in. I was completely ok for hi to go in for peace of mind and, I had been told that he was eating and drinking well and energy level was ok, no nasal discharge and lungs were clear(one person here is a nurse). In discussing him in more depth tonight with some of the wonderful souls that were here, it was noted that a weight loss had been seen, that drinking levels had gone down and energy level had changed. He was apparently fine and completely normal up to late last week and, I arrived home on Tuesday early afternoon. Whatever he has, it is aggressive….. 🙁

AND, in the 24+ hours that I have been home, his condition from there worsened further and, I jumped in bringing him in ASAP. Even called KAH to change his appointment to an earlier time slot.

Possible diagnosis at this time range from early heart to early lymphoma to early nasal tumor. Good case scenario, an infection of some sort.

AND, here is the PV Stittsville, Nail Trim Event Poster! $15 for grinds/$10 for Trims on Saturday March 22nd from 10 am – 5 pm, and, all money shall benefit BHRR’s Coach, our ‘heart’ boy!

Purse Puppy Coach shall be coming with me after my work shift on March 22nd,  – around 2:30 PM to visit and thank all those that will be there AND, he will be doing ‘KUDDLES 4 KASH’ to also help raise some money for his bills. AND, for those that have had the pleasure of hugging this boy, he is DELIGHTFUL! I may also bring BHRR’s Angel Noelle or perhaps BHRR’s Torque! 🙂

On Tuesday March 4th, BHRR’s Purse Puppy’s Coach weight was 14.9 KGs(37.78 pounds)! Since his arrival into Rescue, he has put on 34.28 pounds! 🙂 In just 14 weeks! 🙂

I have a huge blog post to make from this Vet visit and then coming back the next day for emergency x-rays and an ECG (the results were suppose to be back within 24 hours….) and, from there, the next steps for him. I have the report from the one Vet to post and, I have passed along all information and details to PVAR who have the other two puppies and who adopted the mom. At the minimum, it is believed that he has a congenital condition. 🙁 AND, the chances that HE is the only one in that large litter to have this condition is slim to none.

As I am heading offline for the next week+, blog updates will be to a minimum to none – SORRY! 🙁 I am going out of the country and later this year, also plan on going back out of the country as I have been invited to Costa Rica and Nicarauga to assist/train/mentor in a spay/neuter clinic and, to work with the strays etc. over there.  So, I will post as I can and, thanks to all that follow the blogs!!! 🙂

Now, we just have to have those right matched forever loving homes find all of these great BHRR doggies that are AVAILABLE FOR ADOPTION! 🙂

Nailtrim (Medium)

This is an extremely painful blog post to make…..the dark days of r/q rescue and, my already heavy and pained filled heart is shattering even further. 🙁 I have just not been able to bring myself to make the final blog post on her life….I did inform the BHRR BOD team and, from there, my family has just been in deep mourning………. 🙁 🙁

On February 20th, we lost BHRR's Zara. She had begun to have seizures recently and, some clustering and, we were working hard to get them under control plus investigate if there was an underlying mass/tumour/cancer/other disease that could be causing them or was it idiopathic. The common side effect for many seizure dogs is confusion and fear and, in the case of a dog that was so scared and fear aggressive from her history/past, just so heart-wrenching to witness.

This lovely dog had a known bite history prior to coming to BHRR and, when we were contacted to assist, all, I could think about was helping her be the best dog she could be. She has been with us since June 22nd, 2013. She should have had years with us. She has traveled so far in her rehab journey AND, to see her on February 1st here with the people/friends that missed the cancelation notice of our BHRR 'EXPERIENCE' mini Open House slowly going from one person to another(they did not pressure her, gave her time and showed lots of understanding and patience) and she was even nudging for loving! EVEN more massive progress from our September DINE WITH THE BHRR Doggies Event plus December 21st Annual "CHAIN OF SUCCESS' THANK You Potluck!

Below is a VIDEO of her on February 20th, – a short one as BHRR's Angel Noelle video bombed my taping and my iPhone shut off. AND, she was happy and playing and snuggling with me.

Then, I have two photo's of her later that day almost 20 minutes after having another severe seizure, confused and scared and, I have a leash loosely looped over her, so have some contact with her as she was so scared and wanted to be close to me yet, also was so confused and, like many dogs was trying to bash through windows to get outside or drink copious amounts of water, and, so I have found that the loosely looped leash, gives us contact and closeness without making her feel claustrophobic and, when she is ready, she comes to snuggle deep and close to me….

Just so devastating is that we have not been able to get control of her seizures and, her level of disorientation/confusion escalated and her fear mounting and, knowing that I could not save her or protect her or make it all go away…………breaks my heart………

BHRR's Salma came over and laid by her side and nuzzled her…..and began a very small and long crying sound…… 🙁 HQD is a very special lady….she, also went over and snagged one of her special blankies and, brought it back over and then, she left and grabbed another blankie and brought it back…she took one and placed it over BHRR's Zara and, the other she squished and squashed until it was just right and laid upon it herself. From there, they lay in quiet until the next seizure came on….. 🙁

There were so many more experiences that I wanted to give her…we were finally mastering the car – getting there was very worrisome for her, yet, once she was in, she settled and even would sit and, look out the window, yet, loved most was putting her head down on the armrest and snuggling into my side. She learned to trust me enough so, that I could do almost anything with/to her – bathing, ears, teeth, nails were still a bit scary for her BUT we were getting there – I could hold her feet and look between her toes and, with much patience and time, we got the job done. Even putting a collar on, while was a very big moment for her, I could do it and, hooking a leash on and off was no problem. Taking collars and leashes off was once a huge show of bravery on her part and, no issues at all any longer. She loved me…and, gosh, I loved her………

I find myself still calling her name for 'sleepie time', pulling out a bowl to feed her, looking down by my side to smile at her, checking to make sure that the tv remote was picked up – she has gone through a harmony remote and several other electronics….she likes to take things outside…not to chew them, yet, to take them outside.

The memories, the smiles, the laughter, the 'ZARA – just what did you take now?!', the 'stop pulling the blanket out of BHRR's Flint's crate', the 'you have to move sweetie, as I cannot breathe with how close you are cuddling' and 'Sean, I need my glasses adjusted again as BHRR's Zara head bopped me again in love' and…..and…and….

This dog was made for agility. She would jump over and over and over again, the half door to our sunroom just because she could. Especially during feeding time as she kept waiting to see if it was' her' turn and, back and forth….

I miss her……….I miss them all….. 🙁 🙁 I am so sorry I could not save you…………I am so sorry that I failed you…………..I am so sorry that someone in your past bred you wrong and that you were undersocialised and, I am sorry that someone set you up for failure and hugged and squeezed you too tight, not once but twice and, you had to use your mouth to say 'I am scared, please let me go' for no one was listening to your body language. I am sorry that you were poled yet, I am not sorry that we were contacted to take you in and I am NOT sorry for the just shy of 8 months that you gave to my heart and home and the joy and bursting with pride that my soul felt with each blossoming moment of trust and bravery you did………

I love you, I will miss you, I have cried a river and more and, come spring, we will plant a special 'ZARA' flowering plant in your eternal resting place. You are now free of all demons and, I know that we shall meet again…

Life is just so unfair………..why her?!!! 🙁

BHRR’s Angel Noelle’s ‘BREAKING BILLS BAKE’ Online Auction Fundraiser
*Items do not need to be baked until the Online Auction is over. 🙂
ONLINE AUCTION: STARTS January 18th, 2014(7 AM EST) & ENDS January 23rd, 2014(9 PM EST) – We have 32 items to date!

Thank you to EACH person who has stepped up to help us with sharing this request for donations for this fundraiser, offering to make an item, sending those very precious notes of support and kindness AND, in believing in this very special ‘angel’! As always, thank you! Thank you! THANK YOU! What a brutal start to 2014, we have had at BHRR. 🙁 With being in a food crisis, BHRR’s Angel Noelle’s amputation and, BHRR’s Blooms’ gas bloat. 🙁

All monies raised in this Online Auction shall go towards paying for BHRR’s Angel Noelle’s Bills.

This sweet Rottiex puppy used to live in a crackhouse. She lived a life of constant abuse and, at 12 weeks of age, she was abused, picked up and thrown. Her leg/elbow was broken and left untreated for another 12 weeks. She received no medical treatment during this time as my leg worked to try and heal on its own. I was terrifed and in extreme pain.

On Christmas Eve, an ‘angel’ contacted Gwen and, asked if Birch Haven Rescue & Rehabiltition(BHRR) could assist. BHRR immediately stepped up and another ‘angel’ came to her rescue and took her from this very bad place as ‘because I whimpered in pain’, the Owners wanted me gone ASAP and would have killed me if I had stayed with them.

On Monday January 13th, 2014, her leg was amputated and her bills will be close to $5,000 once all of her rehab is finished. She still has to have post-off follow-ups/exams, vaccines, physiotherapy etc.

Here is a copy of a post that I made on our Birch Haven Facebook Page. For those that are inquiring as to ‘where’ the page went.

As we have many followers that are not on facebook, this is a post that can be ignored. 🙂 For those that do follow us on facebook and, missed this post, here is a copy….

This is the final post as part of the ‘end of year statement’ for the BHRR BOD….that absolute privilege has fallen upon my typing fingers…

So much to say, a Gwennie Novel that would be a Gwennie chapter to truly capture it all!!

It has been an incredible year for BHRR, 13 WOW adoptions, so many faces put to names of lovely folks near and far, friendships plus relationships that have strengthened further and increased those links on that BHRR CHAIN OF SUCCESS, new kind and beautiful faces that have chosen our cause to support and believe in, the miracles of so many that were considered by several to be ‘lost causes’, r/q rescues working side by side making an much bigger positive difference to animals out there in need, the laughs, the smiles, the fun(Yes, r/q rescue can be fun!), the public education and community education events, play dates and play visits, the fundraisers(the crossposting!) the walks/hikes, the animals plus people that have touched us to the core and made our hearts just burst in warmth and happiness, the donations of lifesaving food and, other material items, the financial hand to help pay for much needed bills and more dog food, the driving and the more driving and the more driving, and yes, the hugs!
We thank each you that has been there and we look forward to what we hope promises to be an even better year for all ahead. We are NOTHING without you…..AND, to my BHRR BOD, thank you!

It has been such a hard year in others ways, and we take those important life lessons learned and will work that much more diligently in making better decisions/choices in 2014 and onward….we are focused in letting go of the things that we cannot change and that are unhealthy in the name of r/q rescuing.
We endeavour to practise what we preach, research, stay updated and keep walking the talk!
We have cried and still do cry over those that shall no longer be with us – human and animal and, candles are lit in the most honourable plus respectful silence of those that we can no longer physically touch and talk to and embrace……We miss you and, we are better in the having been touched by you…..

We thank all those that have assisted us in not changing BHRR yet, in continuing to help make it a better version of itself! I stand up and applaud each of you and then, I kneel down in the most humblest of thanks in turn, for I appreciate each and every gesture from a dollar to an encouraging word to helping to do nails or helping me to keep making dogs more well balanced and set-up for success! You may not think you have done much, yet, you have…especially on those dark trench days….

2014 MARKS year #18 for our small r/q Rescue and, that moves me into an announcement that I have been slowly sharing with people over the past few months….

The BHRR BOD has been discussing this for close to a 1 year now….

As of 11:59 PM on Wednesday January 1st, 2014; we shall be unpublishing our page….and, deactivating the BHRR BOD account.

This was not an easy step to take by any means for we understand how key networking and social media is….this page has brought us soooooooooooo much goodness and kindness and, we go into this knowing that we shall find ourselves most likely struggling even more financially and with food needs than we ever have had to date…..13 dogs were adopted in 2013, 17 in 2012 and this page is to be credited with these success stories…..

We are a small group and like many groups, we are Volunteers and lead busy lives outside of r/q rescue and, in frequent discussions with members of the BHRR BOD, the bandwidth is just not there right now for me to keep up the pace of this page plus what so many have originally been attracted plus loved about BHRR, the detailed blogs…that is very much a ‘signature’ BHRR arena and, it has had to take a backseat more often than I would have liked in 2013.

2014, is also year of much excitement(and some stress!) in my own professional and personal life – I will be defending in 2014 in re: to my PhD that I have worked pt on for too many years now…, I am furthering my training to do more work internationally with strays, street dogs and spay/neuter clinics and teaching and being mentored….I have been invited to Costa Rica and Nicaragua and, I will also begin to shadow at other Hospitals to increase my own skill set and education with qualifications plus experience. AND, I also look forward to my time at the ES when I can get there. As a result, I shall also be deleting/deactivating my personal account. Barry, Catalina and Mary will remain our eyes and ears out there in fb land.

My priority has always been to the animals under our authority and being hands on and keeping our success rates unparalled out there….that, shall not change.

It is my sincerest of wishes that by this time next year, we can publish this page again….it has become such a staple to my day and, I look forward to coming back to post of daily tips and questions and quotes and all things BHRR plus beyond to help other groups also network their own events/animals and throw our support into their corner!

I have sincerely enjoyed sharing the ups and the downs as part of our commitment to full disclosure and that, we are only perfect in our imperfections as humans….

So, it is will deepest regret that this shall be my last post on this page for some time……..

The BHRR BOD is still trying to figure out how best put forth our requests for assistance and right now, we shall go back to using the website for postings…so, please do visit uswww.birchhaven.org for YOU are the real hearts and souls of BHRR, along with the animals…..

May love, happiness and health find their way and stay with you and yours in 2014….that is my wish for you!

Raising my glass to all of you in a toast of my heart to you!

AND, what night would be complete WITHOUT a HQD story with a new addition here….
You know you have been just waiting for another one of her! 😉
Well, when I arrived home with BHRR’s Angel Noelle, I placed her carefully into a large crate…and, went to grab a bit of water to also place in her crate.
As I was walking back to her crate, I saw HQD sitting in front of the crate and, well….you know by now, giving me ‘that look’…you know the kind…head tilted slightly to the side, and imagine if she could fold her front legs like arms, and, tapping a foot most impatiently at me….
AND, here goes my mind…’oh lord…what now….think, Gwennie..THINK…’ ‘What does Salma want?’!
AND, Sean is smiling for he is just happy NOT to be the object of her displeasure or disapproval…
AND, here I am all alone in the ‘stink eye’ of the storm of HQD…
As I get closer to the crate, very cautiously of course… ….I see that HQD has one of her blankets with her….
AND, lightbulb!! Well, I think I have the light bulb moment…
I say ‘oh, how sweet, YOU want me to give her one of your special blankets to use!’ ‘what a good girl’
AND, you know this is coming……the sigh..that big body sigh that ONLY HQD can do…”WRONG Gwennie..AGAIN” is what that sigh means….along with ‘HOW can this person be so dumb?”! :p
I then get it right…I realise that it is NOT me that she wants to put the blanket in the crate, it is HQD herself! WHY have I not yet realised that I am second rate to the best doctor, nurse, therapist EVER in HQD?!!!
I open the door and bow to the royalty of HQD and say ‘after you…’
With nary a glance my way, she strides right by me and walks into the crate, with blanket in tow and begins to tuck in BHRR’s Angel Noelle with it….yup, HQD to the rescue…again!
THEN, as I wait patiently for the blanket has to be JUST right around ‘her patient’, and, then to come back out…HQD then nestles her own body around BHRR’s Angel Noelle after she is all covered in to her satisfaction and gives me one last look of ‘contempt’ and closes her eyes….
I walked away and grabbed a tissue….LOVE BHRR’s Salma…gawd, HOW I love her…no matter how much of a boot camp she keeps me in…this dog is something magical…..very special and so many of us know it…
BHRR’s Angel Noelle, you could not have a BETTER beautiful canine angel in your corner…..
IF HQD says it is ‘so’, then it it is happening….
WELCOME TO BHRR little one…

BHRR’s HQD HERSELF! BHRR’s Salma! – Over 9.5 years YOUNG!
December 14th, 2013 @ PV Stittsville!
She ‘owned’ this store that day….just happy and exploring, taking notes of who was ‘naughty’ and who was ‘nice’ and LOOK at her body condition!!! Look at that muscle tone/mass!
This was the dog that could not walk back in February 2013!
This was the puppy breeding machine, kept in deplorable conditions, had a penetration injury that had been left untreated and had a MCT that required emergency surgery. Sadly, the Cancer was already in her lymph nodes, so a BHRR Haven Doggie she became and she has blown all expectations by so many that she is not only still here with us yet, look at her!!! DOESN”T she look just stunning!
Now, that she is on treatment for her UTI, she is happier and healthier and NO way is she going to leave us anytime soon! NOT if I have anything to say about it!
She is not going to let CANCER steal her away from us, anytime soon, like her Vets/Specialists prepared us for a few weeks ago, saying that it was progressing quickly now. AND, her Vet Team says that they continue to love being proven wrong!
Cannot wait to see her ‘official’ Santa PAWS Photo’s! 🙂

Thank you from my soul and beyond for any possible consideration to her care……even a $1 donation is super!! :)

NOTICE:

BHRR does not adopt out during the XMAS season due to our position that it is not in the best interest of any new addition being added during such a busy, exciting and somewhat stressful time for many.

Quite a few other Rescues, Shelters, Pounds etc. have also begun to follow a similar protocol to what we have been doing for so many years.

Our XMAS Shutdown period for this year is from Saturday December 14th, 2013 to Tuesday January 7th 2013 inclusive.

http://www.birchhaven.org/fundraising-2008/online-auction-2012

This is an extremely special quilt approximately 4 x 3 made by a very talented and giving plus generous woman – Debi Crozier.
HERE is the story…..
It was made by Debi for what she called a ‘most deserving doggie’ @ Birch Haven Rescue and Rehabilitation Services(BHRR) or to do with whatever was felt to be best, and we discussed whether to place it up for auction in our last planned Fundraiser of 2013, our 6th ANNUAL ‘JUST IN TIME FOR XMAS’ Online Auction. She never made mention of a name of a specific BHRR doggie to give this beautiful item too, yet, great minds ended up thinking alike!
When it was learned that HQD’s Cancer was progressing quickly now, I asked if Debi may be ok that we did end up keeping it to give to HQD, Debi told me that was what she was hoping we would do yet, did not say a thing.
Debi, THANK you! HQD thanks you too! It is stunning and your support of HQD and of BHRR is as special as you!!!
HQD is all snuggled up and comfy cozy in front of one of the fireplaces….. 🙂

ISO: Does anyone know of any photo’s for charity coming up soon? As a couple are now aware, HQD’s Cancer has now begin to progress rapidly.
The emergency surgery that all of her supporters that stepped up to assist me/her when she arrived to BHRR and we discovered a MCT, the day she arrived back in February to give her more time….has given her time, yet, not as much as my heart wanted for her…the cancer was already in her lymph nodes by the time she arrived and, no specialist or Vet thought she would have a couple of weeks, let, alone 9 amazing months…..miracle M&M!!
She turned 9 years of age in April and had lived a very terrible life in an area barely bigger than her, kept outside, bred over and over and over again and upon her rescue, she could not even walk. She was one of two urgent Dogo’s that we took in.
She had an untreated penetration wound on her side that needed emergency surgical attention(had to be so painful for her and was infected) and, no one knew until she arrived safely, that she had another battle ahead of her….this MCT.
She has made so many of us laugh and smile and shake our heads in amazement and I have been the big brunt of her disapproval and cause of humour for many AND, I would do it again for another 9 months, 9 years or 90, if that were possible.
In the back of my mind, I knew this day would come and I knew that I would shatter and, we are reaching that time….far, faster over these last few days than ever….
This lovely Dogo has never had a XMAS, has never had a whole winter inside and was loved and cherished and I regret to say, that I am not going to be able to give that traditional awesome XMAS at BHRR.
That this beautiful dog endured so much in just shy of her 9 years of life before comimg to us, and to be this uber incredible dog that she is, is a true testament to how amazing of a dog she really is….
I wanted to bring her with me on December 14th for her Santa Paws Photo at PV Stittsville, yet, we will not make it….
So, does anyone know of a charity Photo shoot coming up imminently?
If not, I will commission someone to capture her life as it has become a REAL life of comforts and happiness plus enjoyment for her……AND, may I ask all those that are registered to attend our upcoming BHRR ‘EXPERIENCE’ mini open house; to spend a little extra time with her that day???
It would mean a lot….to me and to her….
I know she is one of our M&M’s and that she is a miracle yet, my heart hurts with another loss coming our way…..yet, I hurt mostly for HQD…..there will not be another spring or summer with grass between her toes, warm sunshine on he body, not more sunbathing and teaching me valuable lessons….I hurt for her so much….she deserved more, so much more….more couch time, and, treats and, love….oh, so much more loving and spoiling she should have has over the years….

Yet, this time, 'I' have not been the object or subject of her disapproval!! Or, so, I am thinking!!

This time, here, I think I finally have been 'accepted' in all my glory of faults (HQD thinks I have many it seems…..)…..or maybe, she is just taking some pity on me……hmmmmmm…..regardless, I am going to take it and embrace it! OR, so, I think?!!! LOL

I have been quite ill stating on Saturday, and, with one trip to the Hospital behind me; today, has become a flat out bed day and as I lay here with book unread in one hand, unable to rest yet, feeling exhausted, eyes red plus blurry and nose running, sinuses blocked and sounding like a gaggle of geese honking when I cough, chest rattling when I breathe…..HQD strides right into the bedroom as ONLY HQD can do and….and….wait for it!!!

Guess what she has in her mouth and trailing behind her???

One of 'her' Rupert Wraps – well, it belonged to another once yet, she has laid claim to all that she could….

She had the look of 'determination' her face, walks right up to me and begins to nose the wrap under my hand….

I think 'oh, how lovely….she wants me to have it as she sees I am not well. This is so sweet and on and on, I blather and thank her and….here it comes…

HQD sits down and I get that look…my brain is now thinking….uh oh….what am I missing?!!! Clearly, it is NOT my comfort HQD is concerned about….

Then HQD begins that sighing of hers….and my foggy meds filled brain is chugging along trying to piece what she wants together…

Then, I take a good look at the Rupert Wrap….a really good look…..the light bulb begins to brighten in my brain….

I look over at HQD and say 'Oh! I get it!! You want ME to WASH it!' For, in looking at the wrap, it has a very long nasty drool streak on it, most likely courtesy of one of The Lion Kings and clearly this does not impress HQD one bit!! Drool has grass and diet mixed in for added 'texture'.

In her mind, I am home, the wrap has drool on it and it must be cleaned right this instant! I mean, what better time than the present, right?!!

So, for those that know HQD, you do NOT just passively ignore her….I drag myself out of bed and stumble to the washer and behind me is HQD every step of the way pulling her dog bed behind her and I then pick that up for I know what is coming and we head to the washer….she does not do stairs well, so, it is outside, down the hill, around the house and in the walk-in basement and to the washer….wheezing and huffing and puffing I am.

I put the wrap in the washer, get HQD all tucked in her bed by the washer – for, she does not leave them alone when they are being cleaned – and ask if she is happy now….

AND, her response??? – I get a snort and she turns her back to me and lays down…and, promptly falls asleep…tiring work for sure it is to teach 'The Gwennie'!!

Yup!! She is filled with thanks and gratitude and appreciation for sure!!

Oh! BHRR's Salma….let me count the ways I wuv you!!

All can be assured that HQD's bootcamp is going strong….I am clearly not ready to graduate according to her….

Time for another cup of mint tea after all that!!

A short time ago, I received an email from the most talented and I want to say also, very beautiful and special Liz Bradley of The Ottawa Dog Blog.

http://ottawadogblog.ca/2013/08/we-won-the-top-most-influential-dog-blog-online/

As many are aware, there was a voting contest recently for the Most Influential Dog Blog online and the competition was quite tough AND, thanks to such an incredible surrounding community The Ottawa Dog Blog WON! By taking 60% of the votes!

HUGE Congratulations Liz & Jane!!! Extremely well deserved! Your blog is quite important and valued deeply by so many and you make a BIG difference daily with all your efforts! I have loved watching your amazing 'baby' grow plus develop!

AND, what so humbly surprised me(AND, made me grab yet, another tissue…this time with a welling up of good tears!), was that Liz/Jane was awarded a lifesaving generous gift of $500 donation to the charity of her choice AND they chose BHRR!! As they have posted about, there are SO many great r/q Rescues deserving and in need and, I am touched, humbled and feel privileged to have our small rescue chosen to be the recipient of such an incredible gesture……Just honoured! Immensely!

There really needs to be more words to express THANK YOU! I am MORE thank thankful! I am genuinely appreciative plus grateful and filled with intense gratitude…….

THE BELOW IS FROM LIZ/JANE:

"It was a difficult decision as to the charity who we would pick to receive the donation as all of the Ottawa charities work so hard.

We decided on Birch Haven Rescue and Rehabilitation to receive the $500 donation! BHRR is an amazing rescue who is in need of money to feed the large and giant breeds they rescue – this money will go a long way towards food and vet bills for them!

Thank you again to all who voted. I am so very proud to live in this great city surrounded by fellow dog lovers.

With love and belly rubs,
Liz (and Jane)"

**Could I please ask our fans/supporters/family/friends to take a moment and go over and CONGRATULATE Liz/Jane immensely and tell them HOW uber awesome they are with what they do daily!!!**

AND, here is what I wrote on their lovely Blog post!

THANK you again to BHRR's Cosette's fabu mom for working with members of the BHRR BOD on this poster!

AND, no night would be complete without a BHRR's Salma story!!!!

Just as Sean was helping me get BHRR's Maverick settled, and, I am all bent over almost completely inside the colossal crate, I fear hot air breathing on me…..

I take a peek over my shoulder and there is BHRR's Salma – no word of a lie! – with one of Vivian's special made with sheer love and talent blankets AKA Rupert Wrap – in her mouth.

I am thinking fast and the light bulb goes off and I am like ' NO way, you want me to put it on BHRR's Maverick…NO way!'

So, I reach out to go and take it(Sean is my witness!) and she backs away. I reach back a bit further, contorting my body half in and half out of the crate and she takes another step back.

I then begin that thinking rush pattern again 'Think, Gwennie….THINK'. 😉

I could only think of one thing, she wanted to give BHRR's Maverick the blanket herself…..I did not want her walking in and accidentally stepping on him and I was almost going to just go back to settling in BHRR's Maverick and let her be and well, I KNOW HQD….very well! 😉

So, I untangle myself from the crate, straighten up a bit(yet, still in full alert mode to make a dive if needed to save BHRR's Maverick) and just give a sweeping motion of my hand, bend my head and say "OK, YOUR QUEENSHIP DIVINE…do your thing."

GOD! The looks this dog can shoot my way…OMG! LOL

As she walks past me, she gives one more 'parting shot look' at me, she steps very carefully into the crate and I am now thinking 'where is my phone…where is my phone, I have to tape this' and she pulls the blanket in and she pulls it over as gently as can be(with me hovering like a mother hen) over his operated leg….as one last measure, she used her nose so softly to push the sides of the blanket at his foot to make it closer to his leg….I guess she does not want him having drafty toes….

She then backs out, gives me THAT priceless SALMA LOOK and yup, you got it….walks right over in her wobbly bobbly way and climbs up NOT on the doggie couch yet, the human one and lay down with one sheer sigh of contentment… LOL

AND, just to add more HQD flavour/style, she did not USE one of her own blankets, she had snagged BHRR's Promise's donated so lovingly to her when Vivian transported her last week my way! LOL LOL

Oh, Salma…let me count the ways that I love you…'denture chatter mouth' and all! 😀

Katoby Distribution is having their FIRST even Campaign For Rescue Voting Contest!

Voting ends July 15 at noon – one vote per day per person!

One more reason to LOVE BHRR's Salma!!

She has completely taken BHRR's Bobby under her 'paw'….

She has and is going to accomplish ten times more in ten times less the time than myself.

She has even managed to get him to play…..how precious is that!

For him to be able to let all his own confusion and grief go for even a small period of time to just play; is all to a most wonderful MM DOGO named 'Salma'.

She lays near him and showed him where the water bowl was( no matter that I had already done that… …..and has been showing him where the fridge is for the treats and the window ledge where other treats are kept.

She will sit and look at me either in front of the fridge or in front of the section on the window ledge where those treats are and give me the 'Salma' stare!

LOL I 'get it Salma!!'

Welcome to BHRR Bobby!!

AND…just to top off a lovely Tuesday night – besides the Sens just tying the game up… HOW about a BHRR's Salma story!

You know that you cannot wait….so, grab your fav beverage, popcorn, chips, peanuts or granola bar and enjoy!

This AM, as I am typing away, I feel a plunk at my feet…I look down and there is a water bowl….

Now, I learned… That a dropped water pitcher at my feet means the water bowl is empty and I must fill it up for HQD.

So, what does a dropped water bowl at my feet mean?….so, I push back my chair, pick up the bowl and go from the sunroom to the fireplace tile where we have the two enormous water bowls and I look down.

The one I have in my hand is clearly empty…the other is about half full and I look over and HQD is sitting….that wonderful sit that she has perfected and is just watching me….time begins to tick away…one second, two….and I am thinking…I am thinking!

Then, I decide to fill up the bowl I have with fresh water and I put it down as I know that I am not fully 'clicking' yet, she brought me a water bowl and there was no water in it. I also noted that the towels around the bowls are very wet.

So, I am thinking, hmmmmmm, did she tip the bowl deliberately and if she did….why?!!!?

I put down the fresh bowl of water and she gets up to go over to drink from it and dear sweet BHRR's Cancun gets in there first along with BHRR's Windsor and BHRR's Maverick. She then sits and waits….when the boyz are done, she gets up and goes over and the bowl is about half full still and she sticks out a paw and flips the bowl…water everywhere….she, then picks up the bowl and drops it at my feet.

I then look back over to the other bowl and….light-bulb!!! There is some drool in the bowl and she is expressing her displeasure that it was not fresh just for her.

We freshen up the water ALL the time, and, clearly, I was not doing this fast enough today and she was NOT drinking from a bowl that had drool in it….

We have other dogs that refuse to drink from bowls that may have some drool into it BUT they have never deliberately tipped the bowl and brought the bowl to me!

To test this theory, I observed and watched over the next few hours and yup, if she wanted water and if it was even remotely 'icky' in her mind, she would flip the bowl and pick it up and bring it over to me….

So, this story goes nicely with the photo I posted of Lion King BHRR's Pumbaa!

I am going through a lot of loads of towels to wash for our inside water bowls. I put many on the deck outside for the dogs in this weather when they want to go out for a bit and do not mind her flipping those…

So, we are being even more diligent about the bowls inside JUST for her!

GOTTA love Salma! I know I do!

BHRR's Salma Story! Awww…gotta love BHRR's Salma! 😀

Every Sunday or as needed, I put in fresh dog blankets and/or dog beds etc. and tonight, after I had made BHRR's Salma's crate – she loves to lay in an open crate when she wants to just have some 'down' and 'quiet' time, I hear this sound……

I look over and she is deliberating peeing on the blanket that I had put folded nicely on her bed(she likes to nest in the blanket) and I am like 'Salma, no….you pee outside'….

She looks right at me, walks out of her crate, turns around, pulls the blanket from the crate that she loves and pulls it over to my feet, does her 'sit down and look at me' stance….

I get it…I get it…it was not one of her FAV blankets of which her Auntie Viv had made for her….she has also taken over liking BHRR's Pumbaa's and BHRR's Timon's as well that Auntie Viv also made…..something about them just makes her feel safe and snug and ever so comfy!

So, I pull dog bed out of crate, scrub crate clean….find her spare bed(she has two that I rotate) and put in a fresh duvet, then her spare dog bed with the high sides on top and then one of her 'favourite' blankets on top of that and stand aside to look at her…..

BHRR's Salma sits there the whole time(if she could have crossed her arms she would have in being so unimpressed!), watches me and when I am done(obviously to her liking NOW), she stands up, walks by me with nary a look or glance back and settles down on to her bed and nestles deep into the blanket and curls up and sighs…

Within moments she is fast asleep and snoring…

Yup….Salma's Boot Camp is alive and strong here at BHRR! 😉 cheeky

Thank you from my soul and beyond for any possible consideration to her care……even a $1 donation is super!! :)

What better way to begin a weekend at BHRR than with a BHRR's Salma story! 😉

As Sean was heading to bed – he is an early bird to rise and shine and then to bed – I look over to see sweet dear BHRR's Salma dragging that bed of hers determined as can be out her open crate through the main area and….LIGHT BULB moment again!

I knew where she was headed…well, ok…only so many choices in an open concept house! LOL

It was clear to us both that BHRR's Salma has decided that her 'den' shall not be an open crate any longer…..

For she was dragging her bed with special handmade quilt in tow all the way to the master bedroom…..

She has decided that who better to be Doctor and Nurse to her post surgery healing process than herself and she was saying "NO MORE CRATE".

Now, the hard part…finding just the right place that Her Queenship Divine would be happy and content with where her bed would be laid in our master bedroom! 😛

After about five minutes of moving the bed from this place to that place, with BHRR's Salma just sitting there – her look was just priceless – one of severe toleration for her 'mere' humans in capabilities to 'get' what was to her a very clear answer….

DO you know where she wanted her bed???….in her mind, HER bed with special blankie SHOULD be placed right on top of the king sized bed…..

Well, dear sweet BHRR's Salma, this is going to be fun and a long night for that ain't how it works here…. 😉 LOL

We are in a stand off right now……Sean is now fast sleeping in the rec room with BHRR's Potter and she and I are in a stalemate. LOVE it! 🙂

She is sitting with such a mutinous stubborn DOGO look on her face and the words that are coming out of her mouth…for shame! She is telling me off big time!!!

AND I am sitting on a stool in the master bedroom typing away on my laptop to all of you and doing the 'passively ignoring'……

Wanna take bids on who wins this one? 😉

BHRR's Salma Lesson #3 just hot off the presses!! AND most exciting and wonderful of all is that *I* was not the recipient of said lesson!! Yippee!!

AND so soon after Lesson #2!! :)- She is throwing it all out there, this one!

I figured out within the first night of her arrival how best that BHRR's Salma probably would like to sleep. She always appeared to be 'nesting' and making mountains of her blankets and then sleeping in the middle to feel safe and cozy. She was often then sleeping on the bottom tray/wood of the crate by doing this, having bunched everything up around her.

So, I was sooooooooo thrilled and touched when some donations of comfort came her way and it was like they had read my mind and knew exactly what BHRR's Salma would love! I had never said a word….angels all of you are!!

One of the items donated was a handmade quilt and another was a dog bed that has the raised sides. I put her special blanket folded on the dog bed and she loves it! She will now splay out on her side like the queen she is and sleep deep and sound and snuggly warm and safe within her blanket on her bed. 😉

OK…now that the background has been layed for this Lesson…..moving onwards….

I was feeding the kids and I look over and I see BHRR's Salma dragging her dog bed to where Sean was sitting. I had an instant lightbulb moment!! I had a flash of 'I got it! I got it! I know what she wants.' then a moment of 'Darn! I am not involved in this lesson – maybe, she already knows I know for I set all up for her originally and make sure every night, all is in order for her comfort and satisfaction.' and then I thought 'ohhhh, this is going to be great for Sean has been razzing me bigtime over the first two *lessons*. :)-

BHRR's Salma makes a big show and production out of dragging her bed over to Sean. Many dramatic pauses, some sighs for maximum effect I am sure and I am feeling the anticipation build up!!

Sean is like 'Gwen, look…she wants to lay near me. How sweet of her to try and drag her bed my way.' I shook my head and said 'Sorry, Sean, do not think that is it.'

Sean says 'of course it is! Look at her…I am going to help her'

Sean gets up, takes her bed and moves it right near him as he is finishing up his own meal. Being an outsider watching in can bring much insight and smiles!! 😉

If her look could stop someone in their tracks, it would have!! She was not impressed!!

Sean is asking what is wrong and I just shake my head and shrug my shoulders….trying hard not to smile.

Sean then moves her bed around to several spots and BHRR's Salma just follows him and then sits and stares at him.

Sean says he gives up and feels helpless.

BHRR's Salma then walks over to where Bleach was laying and then sits again.

Sean says he is still sorry, yet, he does not understand and I told him that Bleach has her special quilt that goes with her bed and that I guess Bleach had taken the quilt off her bed and was laying on it. AND that she wants the quilt back on her bed!! Wahoo!! I got it!! I got it!!

She was trying to show Sean that her bed was missing her blanket!!

I took her bed and gently removed Bleach from her blanket and set all up for her back in her open crate.

She went over, turned her back to us and promptly then went to take a nap!!

BHRR's Salma is IN THE HOUSE! Raising the roof, she is!! 🙂

Today's BHRR's Salma's Story! 🙂 This lovely dog is incredible!!

So, like many homes, we have a towel drying routine when coming into the house on rain, snow and mud days etc. 🙂

Well, I had dried off the last of the canine cuties which was BHRR's Spice this round of drying and was working with Kinsley on her homework.

A towel drops part on my lap and I look down and over and BHRR's Salma is looking at me and I am thinking…'ok, what is she trying to tell me…think Gwennie…think!' :)-

There was water in the two water bowls and sans drool, so, that was not the message she was telling me…like last Friday. 😉

Usually a fairly smart bunny in the forest, nope…no idea what she was in her mind 'clearly' telling me.

So, I take the towel and place it back at its resting place and sit back down.

Kinsley and I go back to her homework and plop….there is the towel again and this time, BHRR's Salma is sitting and staring at me….

Lord…what am I missing here??!!

Now, both kids and I are trying to figure out her message…and I check her feet and they are all nice and dry and I swear she let's out this small sigh of 'toleration' for my very obvious missing of her point!! LOL

Nope, we cannot figure it out and so, as I sat down, she came back over and rubbed her head all over my bare arm and it was like ewwwwwww and ick!! For, she just put all over me what had been on her own side of her head, a string of drool that would make any 'real' dog proud to be a dog!!!!

After she was done, she walked away with her wobbly bobbly weevly beebly walk with nary a look at me and layed down with clear disapproval for her 'pupil' – me for not realising that she had been slimed and wanted me to wipe it off!!

I am not one for projecting human emotions on dogs more than what they are capable of feeling plus having (which is a TON) but, she very apparently (not to me until I got the slime!) wanted me to wipe off the drool string from her head!!!

Kinsley said 'wow, mom….made sense after….'

Mason said 'is this dog for real??? My friends are going to pop at this story'

Me, I just look at her and say 'you are going to give me the ride of my life and beyond and reach me SO much!'

So far, I am batting 0 with BHRR's Salma!! LOL 0 for 2!!

UPDATE:

The pathology has come back today on BHRR's Salma's two masses removed in emergency surgery on Thursday February 21st.

The MCT looks completely excised at this time from her left flank. So, other than some localized MCT cells found in her lymph cytology that we took on February 19th, she is clear. This is as positive as we could have possibly hoped for! 🙂

The other mass came back as a possible penetrating trauma injury that developed a bacterial infection.

So, her prognosis remains Palliative yet, she has been extended and given MUCH more time THANKS to all your thoughts and blessings including your donations of comfort and joy plus monetary!!!

THANK YOU! THANK YOU!

Thank you from my soul and beyond for any possible consideration to her care……even a $1 donation is super!! :)

BHRR's Salma AFTER I told her to get off the couch – no issues sticking her tongue out at me!
Feb. 26th, 2013

My Friday 'story'! 🙂

Just before I head off to do a hv for BHRR's Cosette, I thought to share a story….one, that if I had not seen myself, I would have wondering…what the heck? 🙂

Once upon a time….

OK….I will skip that part!

As I am typing on my computer, trying to get BHRR's Bishop's blog utd and I hear this 'crash' in the kitchen….

I am thinking BHRR's Cherry is trying to counter surf or BHRR's Dozer is seeking to locate paper towel rolls…yet, when I go, I see nothing other than a pitcher that Kinsley likes to use to help fill the two doggie water bowls.

I think…'hmmm, must have fallen' and go back to my computer.

A few moments later, I hear 'crash' again…..I get up and see the same pitcher on the floor and BHRR's Salma looking at me and I still am not seeing any connection of the dots and pick up the pitcher and go back to my computer.

Well, this time, when I heard the 'crash', it was at my feet…BHRR's Salma had gone to the kitchen, snagged the water pitcher and as "I" was not getting her message clear enough the first two times, she brought it to me and dropped it at my side while I was at the computer in the sunroom.

She then sat and looked at me and I was like, 'WOW, you are something else' and the light bulb clicked in….I walked over to the water bowls and sure enough, both were empty…..AND all these dogs were just sitting by the bowls waiting patiently.

There is so much that reminds me of this gem of dear sweet BHRR's Dana and she has stepped into my home from Day 1, as I knew she would, being the matriach and the dogs naturally follow her…..

IF she figures out the ice cube maker, I think I may just faint! 🙂

So, not only is this girl uber cute and stunning, but, man, is she smart! I never try to underestimate a dog and I knew she was brill and she has not proven me wrong yet!

LOVING this time with her! LOVING it! 🙂

AND yes, the dogs got their water! LOL

UPDATE February 21st, 2013:

BHRR's Salma is out of surgery and recovering well – I have a VIDEO of her snoring!! 😉 Do not tell her that!! :)-

Everything went well and we also removed a 'nipple' like growth that was on her stifle. She had some pus coming out of one other nipple yet, she is on antibiotics for her UTI and that should also help this.

Her CBC came back normal yet her Bio Chem results indicate what the Vet termed a 'tumour invasion' and the lymph cytology came back on the lymph nodes that there are rare mast cells to be found yet, looks fairly clean and so appears to be fairly localised right now.

The masses have been sent off for pathology and I shall post the results when they come in.

What we have done by doing the surgery today and excising the two masses is give her more time…time she otherwise would not have had….so, be it a month, two or 8, we will be doing those playdates and day trips to give this almost 9 year old darling LIFE as she should have always known.

Thank you to all that have thought of her today and contributed well wishes and positive thoughts today for her!!!

Thank you to all that have donated to help her have this surgery to enable her to have more time…..

I knew going in that we were looking at quality of life for her and she shall have if!!!

For those wishing to have a visit with her and I just as I did with dear sweet BHRR's Concert, do email contactbhrr@gmail.com

She is coming home with me after my shift today and I am so relieved that her surgery is over!!

Thanks team awesome at KAH for loving on her with me today!!! 🙂

Thank you from my soul and beyond for any possible consideration to her care……even a $1 donation is super!! :)

UPDATE:

BHRR's Salma had a GREAT night! She has been slowly integrated with some of the dogs here and she LOVES to run – well, ok, her version of running(she has a wobbly bobbly trot similar to our RIP BHRR's Emma) with BHRR's Gretta! 🙂

She likes BHRR's Spice Girl and she is very smitten with BHRR's Riley(I think it is very mutual!)…. 😉

I ALSO want to shout out the biggest of thanks on behalf of BHRR's Salma for the funds that have been coming her way to help us get closer to an emergency surgery deposit of $500 for her to have surgery tomorrow for the masses.

As of right now: the total raised is $459.50 and I could not be more humbled to my knees for the support…………thank you! THANK YOU!

AND all those best wishes and words of positiveness have been read to her and shall continue to be!!! She needs those as much as she needs anyone to consider donating even $1 to her account!

For those that may consider donating to her every mounting bills, you can call Kanata Animal Hospital directly at (613) 836-2848 and they shall take CC over the phone or in person they will also take cash plus debit.

OR by PayPal 'gift' to gwen@birchhaven.org

OR by email transfer to gwen@birchhaven.org

She is sooooooooooooo sweet!

I know if she could, she would reach through the computer and tell ALL of you how much your support and caring means to her! 🙂

BHRR's Salma – February 2013 with a Rescue Angel

I emailed Canine Water Wellness and have requested to have a referal form faxed over to KAH for us to fill out and fax back so that BHRR's Pumbaa can begin to have hydrotherapy.

As many know, I am a HUGE proponent of this place and use our own pool in the summer time for hydrotherapy.

To learn more about Canine Water Wellness(I have converted quite a few folks over the years…), please visit them HERE.

In fact, BHRR's Apollo is on their home page with a video! 🙂

BHRR's Atlas was also a regular at their locale.

When I have a file all set up at Canine Water Wellness, I will make a posting for dates/times for any approved Volunteers who may be interested in helping me get him to some sessions. 🙂 Always a popular thing for some of our approved Volunteers to help out with. The lovelies at CWW are SUPER! 🙂

AND once, the file is all set-up at Canine Water Wellness(CWW), people can consider, if they want, to make any donations diret to CWW to go towards sessions for him. AS many know, I want quality for him and to be given all the comforts that can be given….this boy was sheduled to be pts and I am still shaking thinking how close it was that we may have missed getting him.

His temperament is AMAZING! Absolutely amazing!!! He deserves this time….AND I am committed and dedicated in giving him all the quality that we can give him. THANK YOU to his two shelter angels – YOU know who you are, for helping to save him! 🙂

AND, I hope that he proves all wrong as so many others have over the years with his own miracle journey! 🙂

As mentioned to one approved BHRR Volunteer last night, I shall be doing playdates and day trips with BHRR's Pumbaa, BHRR's Timon and BHRR's Salma as part of my:

"MASTIFF MAGICAL MEMORY MOMENTS" Movement for them. 🙂 For two are French Mastiffs and one is an Argentine Mastiff. 🙂 I will create an album on our BHRR FB Page and also share.

NONE of these dogs had any life prior to being rescued and I, for, one am going to give them the world…AND asking for a wee bit of help, just as I did with BHRR's Concert to help give it to them…..

SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO, if anyone is up to a visit, hollar – EMAIL or call (613) 725-4279 or PM me……….I already have one home that said they just had to be the first! 😉 BHRR's Concert and I travelled over 4,500 KMs in 42 days……I hope to double or triple that or more for these three lovelies! 🙂

BHRR's Salma – 8.5+ year old Dog (Born April 1st, 2004), female, unspayed, two masses, very weak hind end, poor teeth, pressure sores/calluses
ETA to BHRR – February 19th, 2013
*one of three urgent Dogos we were contacted to assist and we have already taken in one – BHRR's Freddy.

UPDATE: February 13th, 2013 From A Rescue Prime:

"OMG…Gwen, She is SOOOOoooooo sweet, as all of them are!!

OK…I am smitten…"Salma" broke my heart strings."

VIDEO TIME

UPDATE: February 19th, 2013 FROM A RESCUE PRIME:

"Just know that they were all so secluded from each other and makes me so sad to know that they dont know what it's like to be with other dogs.

Thanks for giving her this chance!! :)"

UPDATE February 19th, 2013: there are so many wonderful and amazing things that happen in Rescue and then there are times that you just want to sit down, hang your head and grab some tissue.

Today, dear senior dogo darling girl has one mass that is concerning enough yet, the other that she has is a MCT(mast cell tumour). 🙁

She is scheduled for emergency surgery on Thursday. Her weight today was 34.1 KGs(75.02 pounds).

We have done a thorough exam, bw etc. and also further biopsies to send off for analysis. She also has a UTI. She is on 500 mg of Clavamox BID.

As always, I am not one to ask for anything for myself nor if it was not absolutely needed or urgent and after learning that both of our DDB's are Palliative dogs and now dear sweet Salma, our bills are growing fast. 🙁

For any that may wish to contribute to her account at Kanata Animal Hospital to help out down a deposit for her emergency surgery on Thursday February 21st, you can call the hospital directly at (613) 836-2848. They will take Visa, M/C and AMEX over the phone and debit plus cash too in person.

You can also donated by PayPal 'gift' to gwen@birchhaven.org or via email transfer to gwen@birchhaven.org

As always, I know that I have no right to ask or beg for our supporters are the best of the best out there, yet, for dear Salma, who is now suppose to be living the best that life can offer; and needs this surgery, I am humbly reaching out for her……this senior girl is as deserving as all the dogs in need in the world and I am hoping to be able to put down a $500 deposit by Thursday at 8:00 am for this surgery to excise the two masses….

AND for anyone who can spare a kind thought or two her way, do know that she needs those as much as she needs monies for her growing bills and surgery too!! I promise to read all well wishes to her!!

Thank you from my soul and beyond for any possible consideration to her care……even a $1 donation is super!! 🙂
