BHRR’s Caramel!

One of our Haven Danes.

I opened the window to talk to Sean – and Mr. Caramel poked his head in to say hello!

This boy has come SO far since he arrived in rescue on December 20th, 2019.

Scared of literally everything, had stomach & skin issues and severe ear infections, and was good with female dogs yet only ok with male dogs smaller than him. With humans, he could be selective due to his fear yet warmed up given time.

Well……fast forward to today; his bff is Mr. Athos, another male Great Dane(one of our 3 Musketeers).

He loves The Beans – once he realised they would not eat him & he is fantastic with my two male Wolfies too.

He just needs time and patience, and understanding plus we do not baby him. We do not feed his anxieties & this boy is doing amazing!!!

We do not take a lot of pictures of him as the camera does terrify him, yet, I was able to snap this one fast after whipping out my phone when he poked his head through the window.

I love this boy. He is full of personality; we do not push him past his boundaries – we show him new plus exciting things, and he extends his boundaries when he is comfortable. His boundaries have gotten so much larger since his arrival.

I wish more people could see how wonderful he truly is….his owner discarded him like trash to a shelter.

Well, we adore him….he is safe & he lives a grand life with us.

BHRR’s Caramel!

AVAILABLE FOR ADOPTION!

Today, he had his annual at LAH.

He had a great drive in. With being so worried about so many things, to set him up for success, I did give him Trazodone last night and then again today. There truly is no need to watch an animal struggle and stress when we have the means to lessen their emotional load.

Sean came with me and we did an errand prior to arriving at LAH – Sean stayed in the car with him and the errand went much faster than expected, so we ended up almost 1 hour early for our apt.

So, we just relaxed in the vehicle and people came and went and animals came in and out and only twice did he become reactive.

Remember that a reactive dogs is not trying to give us a hard time. They are trying to tell that they are having a hard time. AND we should be listening and helping them.

I told him that he was ok and then passively ignored and he barked about 3-4 times and then quieted down. No lunging or growling. Once he quieted down, he was told that he was a good boy, I thanked him for being such a good boy and rewarded him with a Benny Bully treat.

This one car stopped and parked close beside us and that man was quite intimidating to him. Well, the man forgot something and after leaving his vehicle, got to the side walk, turned around and came back. Mr. Caramel just looked at him, ears focused and body a bit tense, yet, not a peep when he came back to his car and left again.

I was so proud of BHRR’s Caramel and told him how proud I was and he was given a teat. His tail wagged so much, he was so happy!

From then, he just laid down and we waited for our apt.

About 15 minutes prior to his apt., I went in, prepared his vaccines and got a muzzle – muzzles are not punishment. For dogs with impulse control issues and being worried about a lot of things; this can be a great safety and not just a training tool.

We have muzzled trained Mr. Caramel and he took the treats, put his face into the muzzle on his own volition and his wonderful Vet did the apt. in the parking lot. So much less stress and strain for BHRR’s Caramel.

He never once growled or panicked – did step away when it came to his ears being looked at yet, that is around his face and he settled down well. No issue with his eyes being looked at. His Vet let him check out the stethoscope and his heart and lungs were given a big thumbs up!

The Vet was able to do a very thorough exam – other than teeth(wearing a muzzle) – yet, we do check his teeth regularly at home and we did not have any concerns.

He was great with all of his vaccines – 4 pokes – and his body condition was perfect. We did not do a weight – that meant bringing him into the Clinic where there were animals leaving from their surgeries today and was quite the busy place.

While I would have loved to know what he weighed as he looks marvelous! – his comfort zone is the priority.

He just thinks that others are out to eat him and I did tell his Vet the story about BHRR’s Lilly and how she made it clear that they were going to be bff’s and they are! She did not give him a choice!

He has BHRR’s Fred, my two Wolfies, BHRR’s Lilly, BHRR’s Burst as his great friends and now has added the 3 Musketeers to his set up for success close friend circle. You can see that he and BHRR’s Dean are getting closer too…one day at a time.

He no longer runs away from the other dogs and does not bark at them the way he once did yet, he still remains quite suspicious of them despite the hard efforts of many of them to love him!

He is who he is and needs a understanding patient right matched personality fit home that will continue to help him be the best dog he can be. He has so much potential and from where he came from when he first arrived to how he is now; is light years!

We do not hide him from the world. We just keep his world as big as he can handle and that too is light years from where it once was. He goes to the drive through – loves plain timbits! and chicken McNuggets too, special rare treats! AND we make each trip an adventure of great experiences.

He will never be a dog park dog – we do not like dog parks to begin with. He will never be the dog that wants to be the center of attention or the life of the party yet, if you are just patient and calm and quiet and give him time; I can guarantee that you will have one of the most loyal, biggest personality clown filled amazing of dogs ever.

He wears his emotions on his sleeve and his heart is massive.

I love that he is so honest in his feelings and that he now trusts that I will not set him for failure.

If that right matched personality fit home never comes along; that is fine too…always is….he lives an awesome life with us.

He is my late night study buddy – yes, as some are now aware I have gone back to school for yet, another degree  – he is the last adorable canine mug I see at night when I close my eyes and one of the first faces I see when I wake up in the morning.

He greets each and every day with enthusiasm and a zest for life that is like that small child greeting the world with curiousity mixed with wariness that wars with excitement and caution!

Simply put, I adore him and he is a gorgeous diamond in the rough!

This is a picture of us on our drive in and he is wearing his brand new Wiggle Bumz collar compliments of his collar angel Tracey! What a gorgeous choice for him!

Will be posting in a separate post re: collars!

BHRR’s Caramel with my two Wolfies – Torin & Brogan!

Winter Wonderland Day here at BHRR. 25 cms expected before it is all said and done.

They are very intently looking towards the horse barn for whatever reason.

Mr. Caramel was to have his annual today yet, I postponed it yesterday due to this big storm system heading our way.

NOTICE:

BHRR does not adopt out during the XMAS season due to our position that it is not in the best interest of any new addition being added during such a busy, exciting and somewhat stressful time for many.

Quite a few other Rescues, Shelters, Pounds etc. have also begun to follow a similar protocol to what we have been doing for almost 25 years.

Our XMAS Shut down period for this year is from Friday December 18th, 2020 to Sunday January 3rd, 2021 inclusive.

Any applications received during this time will be processed/reviewed as of Monday January 4th, 2021!

As always during this time, BHRR is available 24/7 for requests for assistance of animals in need.

We shall also network accordingly for, as the local Great Dane/Giant Breed Rescue since 1996, the welfare of the animals are our top priority.

We do not wish to see any animal end up in a disreputable place of which sadly there are far too many out there.

Thank you for your continued understanding – The BHRR Team

My last post of my night!

Time for folks to think about what they plan on giving up for 14 days in our 9th Annual ‘Give it up 4 Autumn’ Fundraiser!

Starts Thursday November 5th and we already have 4 people signed up to date! Be creative! Some people have even done a swear jar in the past putting money each time they or someone in their office swears and then donating the monies raised at the end of the 14 days.

All money raised shall go towards helping BHRR’s Symba and BHRR’s Coupe!

More details in the poster and please do email contactbhrr@gmail.com if you would like to be part of our 9th annual event!

Here are the blog links to BHRR’s Symba:

AND for BHRR’s Coupe

For those who wish to consider making a financial donation to their worthy causes, you can do so via PayPal gwen@birchhaven.org or via email transfer to contactbhrr@gmail.com OR you can do so directly to Liston Animal Hospital 613-591-0966

We have many many many thousands of dollars to raise and we are now set back even further as sadly, BHRR’s Oslo has needed emergency care today…..

From our home to all of our friends, family & supporters, the best of good night wishes are being sent!

*NOTICE*:

BHRR shall be closed for the intake of adoption applications and shall not approve any adoptions from Tuesday October 27th to Monday November 2nd. We do not adopt out around the Halloween season and many other Rescues, shelters, pounds etc. have also begun to follow a similar protocol.

We do not believe it is in the best interest of the animals in our program, especially for dark coloured dogs.
During this time, BHRR is available 24/7, as always, for requests for assistance of animals in need.

NOTICE:

Unfortunately, we find ourselves having to address the below issues once again. Every few years it seems we must re-visit this despite being very clear on our website, Facebook and Petfinder as to how we operate.

This last 24 hours we have had not one yet, two extremely unpleasant moments.

Let us be extremely clear that if people continue to disrespect what is openly stated; we will involve legal and take the necessary action(s).

Our camera’s are running.

1) we are a foster based rescue that operates out of our home and our approved fosters. NOWHERE does it state that you can just drop by, visit or ‘get’ a dog because you want one.

It is NOT even ok to leave a voice message as a ‘courtesy heads up’ that you are on your way or will be on your way shortly to our PRIVATE property which is our home.

We would never do this to you; so do not expect it to be ok to do it to us. We get so little quality family time as it is and your blatant disregard for being mindful of our family time is not going to be tolerated.

We have a very thorough adoption process which is and has been posted over and over and over again in the last shy of 25 years.

All of the steps to be considered for a BHRR approved adoption is found on our websites and even in the application. We have done our job to have the information there. It is now up to you to read and follow the instructions.

We have posted many times over that only completed applications shall be considered/reviewed. We are NOT going to respond to ANY inquiries sent via email, text, voice message, Petfinder or Facebook. This is and has been posted many times over. So Stop. Spamming via email, text, phone, and/or Petfinder is not going to receive a response. They will be deleted and if you continue, marked as spam/junk/blocked.  It is equally NOT acceptable for you to come uninvited; to our home, private property with or without any completed application in hand.

As we also post, if a dog is listed on Petfinder, on our Website or on Facebook page as being ‘Available For Adoption’, YES, that dog is still available. We directly state that we work to keep everything up to date.

We have equally posted many times over that we are not going to make exceptions to our adoption contract, processes, policies and procedures.

2) the steps to surrender a dog is also openly stated on our website.

Do NOT leave a message and then only a couple of hours later show up at our home expecting us to drop everything and put your request above all of the other needy dogs that are equally ‘urgent’.

This is our home. This is private property.

AND do not say to one of us that you left many emails or voice messages re: said dog when we communicate closely with each other and know that this is a lie.

YOU are making our work more difficult that it ever should be and trust me, operating a highly r/q Rescue is damn hard.

BHRR is not about you; it is about the animals and please allow us to do our jobs; our non paying, 24/7, 365 days a year jobs.

We have been doing this since 1996; know what we are doing, are the experts in what we do from rescue to transport, to rehabilitation to adoption, from feeding to vetting, to training to behavioural modification and so much more.

If you want to adopt; please follow the process. If you have a dog in need; please follow the process.

BHRR UPDATE!

1) In having a discussion with several members of the BHRR BOD; we shall be open as of Septermber 1st – subject to change if need be – for the intake of completed applications ONLY to consider for approved adoptions.

BHRR ONLY places per right matched personality fits and has an extremely thorough adoption screening process.

2) Unfortunately, again….in 2020 we will not be doing a BHRR Calendar. The cost is too high for what comes out of our personal pockets when that is monies that are desperately needed to keep BHRR open.

3) ISO: Auction Items for our upcoming 9th Annual Dine with the BHRR Doggies Event. Human, dogs, cat, gift baskets, gift certificates etc. ALL are welcome!

We also need draw prizes!

Please do not post your kind offers here, please do email contactbhrr@gmail.com

4) It is that time again! Time to think about being a special Secret Santa to the BHRR doggies! 2020 marks our 18th year doing this!!

As of today, we still have 21 deserving BHRR doggies in need of a special SS to call their very own!

To learn more and to sign up, please do visit the link!

5) BHRR is in urgent need of the following items:
Garbage bags – all sizes
Laundry soap
Fabric Softner
Fabric Softner Sheets
Giants Sized Dog Toys
XL Costco Dog Beds
Blankets, Duvets, Towels
Paper Towels
Pinesol

6) Please do reach out if you or someone you know has a Great Dane/Giant Breed Dog in need. We are also a highly/strongly focused special needs rescue so take in other breeds as we can that are also: Deaf and/or Blind, Sick, Senior, Neuro, Injured, Pregnant, Palliative, Nursing, Other Medical, Orphaned & Behavioural

It hurts our hearts to see dogs being put to sleep when there is an organization – we have been around since 1996 – OR to see these dogs end up in disreputable places.

Please do email contactbhrr@gmail.com if you or someone that you know needs assistance.

As we continue to receive inquiries and/or applications re: adoptions, we are making yet another blog post – there is one also made on June 8th AND another one made on July 22nd – on all of our adoptable dogs’ blogs re: our current positioning. Our Facebook page and Petfinder also state our present closure for adoption applications.

**WITH COVID-19, WE ARE NOT ACCEPTING/CONSIDERING ANY NEW ADOPTION APPLICATIONS UNTIL AT LEAST SEPTEMBER.**
**DATE SUBJECT TO CHANGE & BE PUSHED FURTHER OUT ONCE AGAIN.**

Please note that we are NOT reviewing nor approving any new applications for approved adoptions until at least September.

We will re-evaluate this closer to that date as to if we need to extend that date.

We will not be accepting any applications or any non-refundable applications fees during this time.

This is for several reasons:

1) BHRR requires a Vet Reference and as someone who works in animal medicine, I know how absolutely insanely busy we are at this time with our staff/hours. We are NOT going to jam up the phone lines doing vet references when people are trying to get through to make urgent appointments, asking for refills of lifesaving meds, needing prescription food etc.

Additionally, the government has only recently announced that Vet Hospitals can now open up to do non-essential appointments and not only operate on an urgent basis. The backlog to the Vet Hospitals is incredible.

People answering the phones at Vet Hospitals need to be answering the phones for many other reasons. Not for Vet references.

We need to focus on patient care at the Hospital and we respect and understand that other Hospitals need to do the same. We are an essential service and need to be able to provide that service to the best of our abilities and checking Vet references does not fall under that criteria.

2) We cannot nor will we do home-visits. I put my life and my family’s life at risk every day that I go to work to take care of other people’s pets. Doing a home-visit is not responsible nor does it follow the policy set forth from the government that we need to be practising self-isolating to flatten the curve.

Doing a home-visit is not urgent during this COVID-19 pandemic.

At this time, I go to work, utilize the ever dwindling supply of PPE available, I go home, I buy groceries, get gas and that is it for my public appearances. I am thinking NOT only of my dogs, yet, my family and you…I am thinking of all of the other people out there….

3) It does greatly concern us with the number of inquiries coming our way over the past few months with the vast majority being for the wrong reason(s) from people now wanting to adopt.

On a ‘good’ day, we get almost 1,000 emails and about 50 phone calls.

These past several months; we are up to almost 2,000 emails and almost 125 phone calls a day.

People telling us that they now have time on their hands. If you did not have time before you stopped working; what makes you think that you will have time once you go back to work?

Additionally, even with people going on EI; the monies coming in are not the same as if you were working and if you feel that you are struggling to pay bills, buy groceries, how do you feel that you can take on the costs of having a Giant Breed dog?

The average cost – and I have been tracking this since 1996 – of owning a giant breed per year, PRIOR to emergencies is $2,400.

All of this to say; we will not be processing any applications until it is ideal plus safe to do so.

If you send us a completed application along with the non-refundable application fee, we will be responding that we are not accepting nor reviewing applications and when we do feel that it is safe to do so, we shall begin to slowly open up.

Our Petfinder and home websites as posted are kept up to date and all details re: said dogs are on their individual blogs. Once, we do open up again for new applications, we will remain ONLY responding to completed applications. You would be welcome to re-submit your application along with the non-refundable application fee at that time for members of the BHRR BOD to consider. We will NOT be holding on to your applications nor the non-refundable application fee from now to then.

**EXCEPTION: We shall no longer be covering the cost of any banking or PayPal fees should people send this non-refundable fee. In May/June, we were out of pocket almost $100 as people were not be mindful. This is much needed money being taken away from the animals as we are covering the fees out of our own pockets and that is money that we would have used for the BHRR animals.**

Asking us what the cost to adopt is or asking to meet a dog; is all information found on our websites. Each BHRR dog has an extremely thorough individual blog that dates back to when they first arrived into Rescue. Emailing or calling us asking for more details, what our adoption fees are, wanting to come and see the dogs are not going to be responded to any longer. We have posted many times over that we are not a pound, shelter or facility and no, you cannot just visit a dog or make an appointment to visit a dog. We are an all Volunteer organization that operates from our own home and that of our approved Foster homes.

AND yes, we are not other groups – we are NOT going to take chances that our dogs could be set up for failure – and as it is the prerogative of other groups to adopt out during this brutally difficult time, it remains our prerogative to not do so. Our adoption success rates are second to no other group out there – 100% for over 10 years of operating and now 98% as we go through year 24. We will not compromise on our policies, procedures and processes.

We are NOT desperate to adopt out our dogs. All dogs that are deemed adoptable shall ONLY be adopted to right matched personality fit homes that are approved via our thorough adoption screening process.

Thanks!

As we continue to receive inquiries and/or applications re: adoptions, we are making yet another blog post – there is one also made on June 8th – on all of our adoptable dogs’ blogs re: our current positioning. BHRR’s Caramel!
AVAILABLE FOR ADOPTION!

He says he is finally ready to make his own special announcement!

He will only be considered for a home that is extremely experienced in understanding dog body language.

We have worked extremely hard with BHRR’s Caramel so that he does not feel threatened by strange dogs or people.

He is so affectionate and loving plus very goofy yet, in the wrong hands, he would be ruined.

He has had a lot to learn in respect to manners with humans and also other dogs.

In not understanding body and other cues, he was constantly worried and would bark in an effort to communicate to others to please give him space and to not hurt him.

He has zero clue that he is a Great Dane. He thinks he is this small helpless creature and for the longest time thought everything was out to ‘get him.’

He communicates so well when he is not comfortable and shall need a home that will not:

*unconsciously or consciously set him up for failure by enabling his inappropriate display of behaviour re: anxiety or stress. He is learning that constant barking does not give him all the attention he wants. He has learned that a few barks, makes us listen to his cues and determine if there is something that we need to passively assure him and then passively ignore.

In the wrong hands, he would be a neurotic mess. He is calm and happy and comfortable in his own skin – can self soothe and comfort and amuse himself and has made some amazing doggie friends.

It has taken awhile for him to learn that said dogs were not out to ‘eat’ him or hurt him. His besties are my two Wolfies, BHRR’s Fred and yup, as you all know, BHRR’s Miss Lilly won him over…..like he ever had a chance?!

With BHRR’s Walter now bunking in with us, he is worried about him yet, quickly realising that BHRR’s Walter is not going to hurt or eat him either.

We do not allow him to to be an idiot with manners or barking and his personality is massive! JUST huge!!!

He is a Dane that is not for the faint of heart. When you have earned his trust, he will give you his own heart and loyalty for life.

We must ensure that whomever is approved to adopt this handsome fine young man, will continue to build upon the strong foundations we have built and help him reach his full potential.

New surroundings, new people and new dogs etc., can stress him out so baby steps with exposure, treats and make each and every experience the best ever!

If you are calm and quietly confident and have that required experience plus knowledge, he just blossoms and thrives.

He is active, loves car rides and not just walks yet, hiking. We have built up his muscle mass and toning and he is in excellent shape, healthy and so happy!

He is crate trained, housebroken and I have had no issues doing his nails or bathing, just a bit of a squirmy worm.

Sean and I have spent a lot of time conversing if we should place him up for adoption yet, if his right matched personality fit loving home never comes along, he will always have a cherished home here!

He needs the proper level of physical and/emotional stimulation and if you want a dog that is an earlier riser, he is one!

He still likes to bark when I get up, at feeding time and when I arrive home, yet, now only gives a few barks and then settles down really nicely. He is a vocal boy that expresses all that he feels in his excitement or worries.

He is also bilingual!

He is not a ‘starter Dane’ and as posted above, shall only go to an extremely dog experienced home. That comes from not having had only one dog prior to wishing to adopt him.

We will not adopt him out to a home with any children – young, small nor teenagers.

We would love to see him in a home that already has a dog of their own that will be a great compliment for him.

No cats or other small animals is our preference with how excitable and full of enthusiasm he can be.

We do not ever want his spirit to be broken….what we want is for him to flourish and continue to see how much this great big wonderful world can offer him in experiences and kindness!

BHRR’s Caramel – never shall you ever know hurting or man-handling days again…never!

You are loved, you are now understood, you are magnificent, so precious and we are privileged to have been asked to assist you!!!

AND oh yeah, Momma Gwennie is bursting with pride over you!

Please note that we are NOT reviewing nor approving any applications for approved adoptions until at least August.

Additionally, the government has announced that Veterinarians can ONLY operate on an urgent basis.

People answering the phones at Vet Hospitals need to be answering the phones for urgent reasons.

3) It does greatly concern us with the number of inquiries coming our way over the past couple of weeks.

On a ‘good’ day, I get almost 1,000 emails and about 50 phone calls.

These past four weeks; we are up to almost 2,000 emails and almost 125 phone calls a day.

Once, we do open up again for applications, we will remain ONLY responding to completed applications.

We are not a pound, shelter or facility. We are an all Volunteer organziation that operates from our own home and that of our approved Foster homes.

AND yes, we are not other groups and as it is their prerogative to adopt out during this extremely difficult time and it remains our perogative to not do so.

Thanks!

This handsome young man is excited…..BHRR’s Caramel!

Why is he excited?!

Well……………he is getting closer and closer to making his own special announcement!

He has learned SO much in re: to trust, helping hands, manners, obedience and learning to understand body language cues from both people and dogs.

VERY very very very proud of this boy and I love that he throws ALL of himself into everything he commits himself to doing…he is not a half measure kind of Dane!

THIS came on my radar last night!

Nicki is making handmade bracelets to benefit our Giant Breed Rescue & Rehabilitation Programs!

100% comes to BHRR and she is doing this indefinitely!

HOW creative, thoughtful and generous is this?!

I already bought mine!

Gemstone

“This bracelet is to support the Ottawa Birch Haven giant dog breed Rescue and Rehabilitation centre. (BHRR).

The unakite beads are a stone that is believed to help with feelings of abandonment and separation issues – very fitting as a representation for dogs that have lost their homes for various reasons. The cost of feeding, medicating, and housing giant breed dogs is much higher than rescues for smaller breeds so every little bit helps.

Paw print charm is made of brass”

He is so excited!

He has the cutest butt!

BHRR’s Caramel!

He wants me to let him out of the yard so he can ‘help’ Sean plow! He raced all the way downstairs to the side yard in his excitement!

He is coming out of his shell more and more and I am becoming more and more smitten with him daily!

He is such a good boy! Still vocal when he sees me for feeding time or first thing in the morning as he expresses his sheer happiness.

He is beyond handsome and per my previous post, Miss Lily is working her magic, one paw at at time on him! He just does not understand her, nor her enthusiasm and lack of personal space for he still is reactive – less and less – in his worry plus fear that he will get hurt. He thinks he is the size of a chipmunk.

All he requires is a confident settled approach and manner to being handled. He corrects wonderfully and you have to be slow and easy in taking his collar. He does not need to be roughly handled, no dog does and he is relaxing more and more as he realises I am not going to grab or haul him around and that I am setting clear open lines of communication as to what is expected of him, so he is not confused or worried or wonders what I want. He is thriving with the structure, obedience, patience and consistency…..

I am so proud of him and the trust he continues to build with me.

He is perfect with my two Wolfies and he and BHRR’s Mr. Fred have an understanding that neither will lose their dignity –  and will remain calm, give each other space and when it is sleep time, both will always on their own go into crates side by side. They seem to have a silent code agreed upon set of rules of engagement and are friends yet, do not seem to want anyone to know just how close they are becoming!

Fascinating…just fascinating to watch them! AND no, I am not projecting human emotions on to them that they are not capable of feeling. They have all of their own wide range of simple, yet, mostly complex set of emotions and feelings. One only has to observe to ‘get it’.

I am waiting patiently for the day to when they both will just let loose and run together side by side with wild carefree joy in our 3+ acres of fenced in yard. It is there…bubbling just under the surface!

This journey with him has been so awesome.

We are back at the Vets in another week or so to re-visit his ears and are still waiting for the cardiologist apt.

We will be working on switching him gradually over to a fish based only food too -his skin/ears medical issues are strongly suspected as being allergy based, food and seasonal. If anyone would be interested in providing funds to help us buy FROMM Salmon & Potato, donations can be sent via PayPal to gwen@birchhaven.org or via PayPal to contactbhrr@gmail.com Thank you in advance for your consideration!

At this time, we do not know if he will be placed up for adoption and as always, that is not what BHRR is about. We are about helping the next one in need of us and making sure they get everything they need.

He is living his best life every day and our promise is to keep having him live that quality filled life!

This handsome man is with me at work today!

BHRR’s Caramel.

His weight today was 113.96 pounds.

He is being such a good boy.

As several are aware that day he arrived, he was seen by one of our Vets and had a quick assessment. With how stressed he was, we did not weigh him, only gave him Rabies and the Vet had noted a heart murmur, which we agreed to assess again in a few weeks after he settled in. The Vet also had a brief look at his ears and it was also agreed to wait until his next visit to see how they were progressing as they were quite red and irritated.

Today, he saw another Vet and they concur that he has a heart murmur that while it is heard on both sides, it is stronger on the left.

We did swabs his ears as they remain swollen, red plus pain him and they both contained cocci and yeast. So, we put KT ear treatment in both ears.

We did bloodwork for his heartworm and tick borne disease testing and the results came back negative.

We did his lymes and lepto vaccines plus he had a booster of the DHPP.

The recommendation at this time is for him to be seen by a cardiologist and we will do a referral.

Behaviourally, he is still reactive to strange people and dogs and with people he is now barking in more of a friendly unsure way over a ‘please stay away as I am worried you may hurt me’ way.

Dogs can still terrify him too and he remains reactive yet, is beginning to be a bit more curious. He has been completely fine with both of my own male Irish Wolfhounds and is indifferent to BHRR’s Freddie. BHRR’s Miss Lily is a dog that he is still trying to figure out and he goes from being worried to curious and you can see that he is working on that courage!

He is very vocal when he first sees me or when it is feeding time and we are working on the passively ignoring so this display of inappropriate attention seeking behaviour dissipates.

He is so affectionate and playful and if you just give him some time to settle, he really is precious!

We can also tell that he has been used to ‘tossing his weight’ around to either get his way or to avoid having to do something and we continue to work on those manners!

Leash manners are coming slow and sure!!

I really am so smitten with him AND the really amazing thing he did today too was to give blood whereby the serum is going to be used to help another dog in another Rescue. WTG! rockstar!

If you did not know, Danes are universal blood donors and BHRR’s Caramel, you are a hero!!! Lifesaving!

We shall be back to see the Vet in 3 weeks and will discuss more re: possible allergy meds and I will be working on switching him over to a fish based only food – also being mindful of his GI issues – as we believe he has food allergies and quite possibly seasonal too. He is presently on a chicken, turkey and herring based food and we will start a slow gradual transition off of it.
