Lynn, Markham, ON

Hello,

I first want to say that what you are doing is just the most wonderful thing for all these dogs.

You are a truly amazing woman with the biggest heart.

I have been following your website for a few years after my Dane of 11 years passed.

He too was a rescue at 9 months and although I have had many dogs since a child  he was my true soul mate.

So I live precariously through your website and enjoy reading your success stories and my heart breaks when I read of the ones that don’t make it.

When I read about Blossom I decided that was it…….I had to donate.

I hope one day to get a another Dane and will reach out to you when the time is right. I still miss my Fred every day.

Words cannot express how much I am in awe of all the good work you do.

You are a Mother Teresa to these dogs and as she once said : “Spread love everywhere you go. Let no one ever come to you without leaving happier.”

This you truly do for all the dogs that come to BHRR.

Sincerely,

On September 20th, 2012:

BHRR's Concert is having a great day….me, not so much after her antics!! LOL I left for not even ten minutes to put Kinsley on the bus to come home to find her not all cozied up on the double bed snoozing in the rec room where I left her not ten minutes but outside in the fenced in yard digging a hole that would make any construction company darn proud!

One could lay a foundation to a small ho

me with what she so happily was doing!! So, the wee minx decided to come upstairs, open the front door and have some fun!

Now, she is standing beside me, tailing wagging, face coated in dirt and seeking her breakfast. Evidence is all over her face and all my good doggies are inside with looks of 'it was not me!!'

Me? I get to spend the next couple of hours filling in her trench! I know I said she was to have all of these great adventures yet…..well…. :)-

Love ya BHRR's Concert! No doubt that tumour or not, she is still going strong!

On Monday September 24th, 2012, BHRR's Concert had the following announcement to make!

BHRR's Concert would like to make another very special announcement. Today, is DAY 30 of her LIFE!!!

She is not only surviving; but thriving really well. The Cancer is beginning to slow her down a bit more this week over the past yet; she is eating and drinking and pouncing and trotting and yes, still very happily out there trying to dig more foundations for small houses and even some palaces!! 😀

I know that her time remains very limited and just yesterday, she and I crossed over the 4,000 km mark in our travels of her having all her dreams of LIFE fulfilled in adventures and caring warmth from ALL of you!!

We take it one day at a time now and I do not plan for more than 'tomorrow' and live each day as the best I can give her!!!

You are sheer awesomeness BHRR's Concert!! A true gift.

HERE is the album on FB that I have been creating for BHRR's Concert and her incredible life of adventures and dreams fulfilled!

With how much I have on my plate these days, it is going to be very hard for me to post a blog here and posts/updates there, so I shall keep the link to her photo album current on her blog for people to virtually be a part of her living LIFE to the fullest!

This is BHRR's Concert's 8th journal entry of her my wish for her 'warmth and love from caring people', a celebration of the life that she is going to be living for as long as we can give it to her in quality!

B&F Kanata invited BHRR to a community education & public awareness event at their locale on Saturday September 15th, 2012. She woke up that AM ready to go and I was armed with all her goodes.

With the cost of her Tramadol and Deramaxx, her Vet bills keep increasing BUT the way that I look at it, I AM so happy that she is here and can do that! 🙂 THANK you everyone again from my heart for ALL that you are doing to assist me in giving her the best LIFE possible! I remain so touched by the support for her. She is just a treasure!

BHRR's Concert getting some loving warmth & what a great BHRR amabassdor plus GD Breed ambassador too! – September 15th

She tired more readily than she had in the past, yet; after quick rests was up and ready to go again and could not get enough of outside! SHE LOVES the sunshine!

BHRR's Blossom – 13 days post-arrival to BHRR

September 20th, 2012

**I wanted to get a new weight on her on Monday BUT with some other dogs of my own becoming critical, I needed to tend to them with many Vet visits including in the ICU for one of them at Alta Vista.

I cannot wait to get that new weight though as she is looking mangificent compared to when she first arrived.

**You can see her poor frost-bit ears in the photo I posted below. 🙁

I just know there is an imp in there somewhere waiting to come out! 😉

I get more and more glimpses. 🙂

As of two nights ago(September 18th, 2012), she is no longer in a crate either. Proving 100% trustworthy……She is very sweet!

She reminds me of BHRR's Adele, BHRR's Peanut & BHRR's Gretta for while I prepare the food, she likes to eat out of the food bins….just some appetizer eating before the main meal! 🙂

Her body posture is much more relaxed and tail out and nice easy stride. 🙂 & Comparison shot taken on September 11th, 2012

She is getting there……slow and sure…..her personality is also getting there, no longer so terrified.

She has been making excellent progress.

I started off feeding 8 small meals a day and we are now at 6 small meals a day. AND no matter how starved/neglected she was when she was first rescued, she has been so gentle in taking treats and food. Just amazingly so.

BHRR's Blossom – 13 days post-arrival to BHRR

September 20th, 2012

**BHRR's Dozer & BHRR's Blossom – he really has taken a shine to her….he has tucked her right under his shoulder/paw and he has been so good for her!

I had scheduled BHRR's Sugar and BHRR's Spice's Vet appointment for boosters, microchipping, bw for spaying etc. for October 3rd at 6:50 PM yet, with all that BHRR's Spice is going on and that she shall have to be on antibiotics for at least 7 days, I am going to hold off on her boosters and just bring in BHRR's Sugar and have the BHRR's Spice use this time as a recheck. Maybe, she shall be well enough, maybe not.

I have scheduled both of their spays for October 18th, 2012 at this time.

Sooooooooooooo, this is a bit of a surprising post to be making. Sigh…………

When I was at work on Monday September 24th, Sean gave me a call and said, I think BHRR's Cosette is in heat!!!! I was like, that is not right, remember she had the ultrasound and a scar was found and her vulva and teats were immature and….he said, well, the girls are VERY interested in her.

Experience has shown that when the girls at BHRR are interested in another girl, that it is often likely they shall be going into heat very soon. This was the case with BHRR's Journey for example and I then scheduled her spay about two weeks earlier than originally planned for I did not want her going into heat and we just got her before she went 'full bloom'.

I said let me talk to her Vet, the one that did the u/s plus the other staff members present that day who witnessed/were privy to the u/s and I even have photos!!!

Now, I am aware that the u/s may not be conslusive yet, she does have a scar and I am thinking, this shall be a first and we JUST put her up for adoption. Sigh……..

Well, sure enough, Tuesday hits and she is in full blown heat…So, we pegged her at 18 m, no more than 24 m of age…..she has to have been closer to 15 m when she arrived to BHRR to have been so immature looking.

So, we have to pull her from being available for adoption at this time for we do not place dogs that are spayed or neutered into adoptive homes.

SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO, Sir Maestro has been with my handler for the last month, so that is not a worry and Mr. Big Blue Bronson(who is clueless about girls as is) is being shipped out to a relatives place FOR we do not have babies at BHRR, we do not set dog up for failure for something like that being possible and so, both of my show dogs are off zee premises!

So, we have to wait 21-28 days for her heat to be over – around October 15th to the 22nd AND then wait another 8 weeks before we can spay her. She can have a 'spay date' with BHRR's Velvet, who is at BHRR having been pulled from the shelter after her hold period was up and during her time at the shelter had gone into heat

NOW, the one thing the Vet did say is that she could be having a UTI instead and we shall rule that out for sure. BUT, we for sure had ruled out via u/s and that scar found a spay…so, the Vet wonders what the scar line could have been for, as DO I! AND does the rest of the staff at KAH.

I would have been NONE to thrilled to have adopted her out(NEITHER would have her home) and she had gone into heat then). 🙁 We would have paid for the spay of course *if* that had happened and all of us are shocked for we did all the right steps to ensure that she was spayed……UGH! This is a first and thank goodness she was still with us at BHRR!

NOT YET AVAILABLE FOR ADOPTION AT THIS TIME!!!

BHRR's Scarlett is healing well from his complicated spay and I have scheduled her booster visit and we shall micrcochip her at the same time on October 2nd, 2012 for 5:10 PM.

Another two weeks after that and she should be ready to be placed up for adoption!

Really awesome dog, very much has a mind of her own this one! LOL Very affectionate too!

BHRR's Emmett(everything crossed!) shall be ready to receive his Booster and Rabies and I have scheduled his Vaccine appointment on October 1st, 2012 and his neuter on October 15th, 2012.

He has been a VERY costly boy for him and also for thos he has infected since his arrival to BHRR and lucky he is soooooooooooo freakin' cute!

Sooooooooooooo, it only took 34 hours before BHRR's Spice needed a Vet visit(sigh…poor wee thing)….

Went to bed last night/this AM – 12:30 AM(yes, early!) after making sure two of my own two babies were all set on their IV fluids/meds and all was quiet and settled in the house.

Wake up at 4:45 AM and go to let BHRR's Spice & BHRR's Sugar out and BHRR's Spice's eyes were like she had developed bilateral cherry eye overnight….

So, off to the Vet we went suspected possible allergic reaction, maybe cherry eyes and bw done, full exam, fecal, nail trim, NSAID injection of Metacam and NSAIDs to go home, lots of loving and BHRR's Spice has inflammation – possible spider or bug bite – cause really unknown as to this inflammation. Bloodwork does indicate anemia(not surprising) and possible parasites(she is being dewormed as of Sunday night) and a sightly elevated WBC.

It is very painful for her mouth to be opened, she cannot take treats or drink well, no swollen lymph glands, low grade fever, lethargic(AND that is not her!) and just feeling overall uncomfortable and all ickiness. 🙁

Her weight was a painfully thin 14.6 KGs(32.12 pounds) and she should be at least another 15 pounds at her current size. AND the Vet concurs, that she has to be around 6 months of age, not 5 with those adult teethies in there. AND they also felt that she looked more like a flat coated retriever yet with newfie ears! AND 100% cuteness overload! :)-

So, BHRR's Spice really could benefit from some 'SPICE SAVING' Angels and for anyone considering to donate to her mounting bills as we try to figure all of this out for her:

UPDATE: September 25th, 2012 @ 6 PM:

On my way back in with BHRR's Spice. She is not better. She is worse. 🙁

Per the two Vets that saw her tonight at KAH, so, could be early sign of puppy strangles – which is NOT contagious and can be treated with steroids(no lesions though and not a classic presentation) as well as having early signs of bilateral cherry eye. Her third eyelids looks so uncomfortable for her, her eyes are puffy(they were swollen almost shut at one point), her lymph nodes are only marginally swollen and this time upon mouth examination, she did not find it painful.

Vets are puzzled and are doing all they can.

On antibiotics – Clavamox 250 mg BID, eye ointment, will subq her tonight(500 ml) and re-evaluate tomorrow unless condition worsens further.

She has no interest in food or water.

Temp is still high normal(39.4), gets her next Metacam tomorrow and she cannot have steroids due to having been given a Metacam injection this AM at that Vet visit.

Thank you KAH for being there again!!

Please keep BHRR's Spice in your thoughts…..

UPDATE: Monday September 24th, 2012:

BHRR's Spice thinks stairs are optional, why use them when she has super powers in her mind and can fly! (roll eyes)….THANK goodness they are just the few steps going to and out of the house…

AND, oh, small holes, no matter how small is where noses, necks and half our bodies should belong in….

In less than 12 hours, I have greyed up significantly…and there shall be NO collars around her neck(I like to use them for training and unless someone is watching her nonstop)….they make great 'hanging' and 'choking' devices as she likes to rub herself on things like the fireplace tools and then gets caught…

I am glad I am touching up my grey/white hairs on Friday…I am going to need them!

I think Kinsley had some kind of ESP moment BEFORE I even picked them up! :)- HOLY! Are these names bang on!

Breakfast on the patio on Monday & BHRR's Sugar

Having their first exploration adventure at BHRR & BHRR's Spice – Monday

They both had a TON of burrs in their fur. Both are a body score of about 3/4 out of 10.

They both began their deworming protocol on Sunday and both were put on Revolution.

My one observation about BHRR's Spice:

In less than 12 hours of having her, she has tried to 'hurt, kill or maim' herself three times! She is not a for the faint of heart person AT ALL!

UPDATE SUNDAY September 23rd, AM:

the pick up of the two Newf pups has been rescheduled to tonight and shall post photos for name suggestions as I shall then also know their sex.

Hope everyone is enjoying their weekend!

UPDATE SUNDAY September 23rd, EVENING:

I have the two babies! I was given two females. They are Newf/Bernerx and while there were some more giant looking; I asked and took the two most in need.

Therefore, two 'wee' females are with myself and Mason. We have a bonded pair, similar to BHRR's Rose & BHRR's Petal.

We are told they are around five months, yet; their teeth are indicating somewhat older – 6 months or so. 🙂

They shall need names and my daughter suggests 'Sugar & Spice' and ideas from all the wonderful name gurus on the board would be awesome!

They are black with white and are SUPER SUPER tiny!

Welcome to BHRR little lovelies!!!

UPDATE: September 9th, 2012 – BHRR's Riley(AVAILABLE FOR ADOPTION!) & BHRR's Concert:

Today was suppose to be cottage day at a friends place yet; with the hail and severe thunderstorms last night; all the progress we made back to happy and comfortable(from last Tuesday rain and icky weather) including as posted recently – zooming!! – went downhill.

AND despite the sunshine that dawned bright and cherry today; BHRR's Concert was just not up to headed out. So, she rested, soaked up all the BHRR love and as the day passed her spirits picked up and she was then up to visiting with Holly & Bruce tonight.

She had a nice visit; loved going up with great enthusiasm ( much to my own dismay) their stairs both inside and outside!! 🙂 So, she zipped up them and went down them and zipped up and went down.

She quickly found a very BIG (figuratively and literally) male admirer at their home, to the point that I sincerely thought he would pout for days when she did not exactly feel the same about his charm and flirtaticious nature!! LOL BHRR's Riley(AVAILABLE for adoption btw!) LOVED her, no…..actually he ADORED her!

Shared her bed, brought her toys, nudged and kissed her, play bowed, danced and pranced around her and in the end, he realised that it was love not returned and settled for laying on her bed with her! LOL Where she went, he wanted to go!! LOL

Thank you Holly and Bruce for the few hours, lovely conversation, caring hands and soothing aura of your home – amidst the clown BHRR's Riley!

He was even so kind as to bring me my shoes!!

We had a a pit stop at a Wendy's for BHRR's Concert to have some chicken and then made the 40 minute remainder drive home!

BHRR's Concert's foot September 9th, 2012 & BHRR's Riley(AVAILABLE FOR ADOPTION) with BHRR's Concert on September 9th, 2012

BHRR's Velvet is now at BHRR!

What a DREAM dog! Already I can tell that she is something uber special!

We found out last week that she was not able to be spayed at the shelter as she was coming into heat, so we have to wait 8 weeks(56 days) after her heat is over(another 14-21 days) before we can spay her. So, she shall be with us for a wee bit!

We then learned last night that she had also begun to have KC at the shelter, so she is on Doxycycline for that.

BHRR's Gretta is NOW AVAILABLE FOR ADOPTION!

*she is the last of the 12 that BHRR brought in from the PAWS R US seizure to be placed up for adoption and SHE did it! SO proud of her and her progress!

She was the one that was most fearful and turned inward and catatonic. She would take to bullying and manipulating her sister, BHRR's Peanut to try and control her world and take care of herself and her sister. 🙁

She has taken a long time to learn about toys and yummy treats and bones BUT she 'gets it now'!

She is the one that I was most worried may not make it to the point of being able to be placed up for adoption yet, in the last month to 6 weeks, we have made leaps and bounds and strides and jumping up and down moments! She is the one that I was most worried would be a fear biter as she was so tense and stressed and BHRR's Gretta was the one that took the longest to get to eat and put the weight on and keep it on.

She was so stressed and even today, the overhead fans can spook her and doorways yet; nothing like it was and more like how it is for BHRR's Peanut and BHRR's Freedom etc. now.

I figured out the trick to getting these FREEDOM Danes to eat and patience, patience and more patience and time and time and more time and consistency and routine and just understanding this pedigree line of Great Danes. She is 15 years of taking in Danes from the same pedigree line.

Like her mother, BHRR's Adele and sister BHRR's Peanut, she needs to see windows and will still try to climb over doors(those that do not have the windows in) to get to see windows. Not long after these FREEDOM DANES arrived, Sean & I had to take out the window to the door to our sunroom as these Danes would stand on their hind end and dig their front feet into the window edge and stare to the outside and then fall asleep standing up. Would break your heart…..In fact, I have a photo in BHRR's Adele's blog that shows her standing up in that exact spot and position.

She like her sister BHRR's Peanut knows how to open the paddle door handles and love to let themselve in and out and in and out! LOL

So, if we close that door, she will climb over it in her almost panic to be able to have access to the front door. The whole house of ours is made out of windows and these Freedom Danes need to know they have options and a way out. They are products of their past for sure. 🙁

She is more quiet about asking for affection and will stand quietly by your side or come over very quietly. She is getting better and better about being more overt and the BHRR's Journey HEART biscuits really won her over! 🙂

She will need a quiet home, one that is patient, kind, understanding and full of structure and routine. She has had full run of our house for many many many months and has never destroyed a thing. She does like to eat in a crate and lay in there for quiet den time yet; as long as she is fed in a quiet area, she should be just fine.

She likes to lay on Bleach's dog couch at night to sleep and her closest friend is BHRR's Cosette since her sister was adopted recently. While I know that she misses her, she has not stopped eating, has not been depressed and this is a great sign for from the moment they first arrived to BHRR, I let these three Danes(mom and siblings) be together and yet, trained them as individuals, together and in small and large groups. While they remained quite close, each one has developed and grown as indivduals and developed their own social network and connections plus relationships with other dogs.

She does not need to be adopted to a home that already has a dog yet, if that home had a like minded personality fit for her, that would be lovely. She is not a wallflower in many ways and all of these FREEDOM dogs are survivors and have to have backbone to have survived. Even if those backbones had been fractured and broken in many places.

She can go to a home that works ft, pt, is semi-retired, retired, works from home etc. as she is completely housebroken and trustworthy and that versatile.

She is getting better and better in cars and visiting places and the patience of that right matched forever loving home is going to pay off HUGE!

She makes me feel really tender towards her……what she shows on the outside is becoming more and more of a reflection of the really amazing beautiful creature that has been hiding inside and she has been masking it with other behavours.

She takes treats very gently from my hand and there is no resourcing issues at all.

She is fully integrated with all the dogs here and has been almost from the very beginning.

She, like any neglected/abused animal if cornered and pushed beyond her comfort zone will crumble. Bowls still make her nervous yet, not as bad as before.

Strangers still worry her some but better and better if people are just patient and kind and acknowledge and then passively ignore.

She is a real star that has really begun to shine with the bright lights that have been kept so tightly hidden from the world as she tried to protect herself…..

It is now time for her to spread her wings further and carry on all of the foundation work laid so strongly at BHRR for her in her right matched forever loving home!

BHRR's Gretta

BHRR's Lizzy fecal came back negative! 🙂

BHRR's Cosette is NOW AVAILABLE FOR ADOPTION! 🙂

She is doing FABU!!! 🙂

As long as someone is a positive calm and quietly confident leader, her manners are impeccable and she is not a turkey! 😉 She just needs a leader that is not going to allow another dog – male to hump her – or try to dominate over her for she is not comfortable with that type of behavour. I do not blame her!

She is going to do great in a home with at least one other like minded personality fit dog and she is also great with kids! 🙂 I have no worries at all with her with dogs of any sizes and is a big puppy at heart herself! 🙂

She can go to a home that works pt, ft, semi-retired, retired, works from home etc. She is fully trustworthy in the house and has not been crated in some time. 🙂 I still put her in a crate from time to time so that she is still comfortable and often she can be found sleeping in a crate with the door open for quiet time. 🙂

She is soooooooooooooooooo affectionate! 🙂

What a beauty, both inside and out! 🙂

She is still putting on a few pounds yet, not worried that this is something to hold her back from being placed up for adoption at this time. She is a pampered pooch and LOVES her comforts of lots of dog beds and dog blankets.

Below is a photo taken from August 4th at Pet Valu in Kemptville when we were there for a community education and public awareness event! She is playing with my baby IW Bunker!

BHRR's Velvet – Black(ANOTHER soon to be BBBBB) Great Dane

We shall get a better gauge after she arrives!

Her Story:

"A stray. Her time was up in another pound, so the this SPCA took in all their dogs to evaluate and rehome.
She is a big girl. Good body weight that being 125 lbs. She has an even temperment, nice disposition. No resource guarding nor food aggression at all. She passed evaluation with flying colors. Also tested with a boxer and a small dog. She was fine with all, no problems whatsoever."

UPDATE #1 September 12th, 2012:

PLEASE send good thoughts to Shai/Magnolia! She is the Senior special needs Great Pyrenees that ARC was sending our way as a Hurricane Issac doggie that was left behind on last weekends transport due to vehicle trouble.

She has then been re-scheduled to arrive to BHRR this weekend – tentatively Sunday.

Karla has called plus emailed me to say the lump under her left shoulder has grown aggressively and is double, if not tripled in size since last Sunday. 🙁

Photos of her are under the 'BHRR Hopefuls' Album

Scotlund is bringing her to the Vet and we shall update as we can….

Please send her all your best vibes!

UPDATE #2 September 12th, 2012:

Very sadly, the news for Shai/Magnolia is not great.

Per Karla of ARC, she is headed into for emergency surgery tomorrow as the Vets suspect mammary cancer. She also has an enlarged heart and advanced heartworm.

While I wish she was at BHRR to love on and care for, she could not be in better hands with Animal Rescue Corps.

Please keep her, Karla & Scotlund in your hearts and blessings…..

ADDITIONAL INFO:

Additional info. per Scotlund – ear mites, HD and severe hearing loss yet; is as sweet as can be and is under the care of an excellent team of Vets.

AND I continue to say that this special needs senior Pyr is also under the excellent hands of ARC!!

I may never get to actually meet her; yet; she touched my heart from the moment I knew about a Pyr in need.

Hugs to all!

UPDATE: September 13th, 2012:

UPDATE on my sweet special needs girl as of 5:30 PM on Thursday September 13th from Karla of ARC:

"Magnolia has made it of surgery!

Cancer was the first concern. The tumor was nasty, big and attached to her muscle. They had to remove the whole muscle and the surgery site was so wide she has to heal with an open wound. She will be on pain management and antibiotics for awhile They founds tons of ovarian cysts when they spayed her. They said she's had cancer for awhile but they feel stress accelerated it's spread/growth. They removed all the cancer they saw. The tumor on her foot was removed as well.

Her lungs and heart did well during surgery so she IS a candidate for heart worm treatment once she heals from surgery.

She also has arthritis and hip dysplasia but this will be third in line to be addressed.

She can't be transport yet and she has two appointments next week.

Monday is check up and then she'll have x-rays later in the week.

She is welcome here as long as her recovery takes!"

When Karla first contacted me to say that the lump was getting larger, I was asked what I wanted to do – did I want her transported earlier than this weekend, have her vetted or wait until Sunday.

I said I want what is in her best interest and said please do bring her to the Vet and Karla & Scotlund have been extremely proactive with her vet care with an amazing team of Vets AND THANK you Karla & Scotlund for continuing to take such excellent care of her!!! 🙂

UPDATE: September 18th, 2012:

UPDATE: From Karla today:

"I briefly talked to Scotlund today and he told me her checkup yesterday went well! She is continuing to recover. I don't think he's thought about when she might be well enough to transport yet but I imagine we'll have a better idea by the end of the week!"

BHRR’s Lizzy was at work with me on Monday and I got a weight and examined her, microchipped her, am running a fecal, did a Booster shot, took blood for her pre-surgical and did nails.

She already had her rabies does at the HS prior to her coming to BHRR.

She is too young to do a HWT.

Her weight was a slightly thin 34.5 kgs(75.9 pounds).

She arrived to BHRR on Saturday and has settled in very well. Her BFF is BHRR’s Scarlett!

She reminds me a lot of BHRR’s Holden in look ( not colour!) and stature. She is a stunning dog!!

She has proven to be housebroken for the most part and we have discovered that she likes to rip up blankets…so, nothing unsupervised.

She is being crate trained and having no issues other than that first moment of ‘the stand-off’. Gwennie’s doggie boot camp says we are going to be crate trained and one yummy treat later, in we were and now she races to her crate for feeding and sleep time.

She was a wee bit wary and skittish at first meeting some folks at work yet, warmed up well and her fur is soooooo soft!

The run at the back of the Hospital made her nervous and she would do some soft crying here and there yet; settled down quicker and quicker, the more we were there and saw that I would take her out and be coming back.

Her lungs and heart and everything checked out great and she is scheduled for her spay for September 28th. I want some time for her to get some weight on and to work more on her comfort level.

She is quite the ‘Pyr’! LOL If she did not want to go one way, she would lay down and get that look! LOL It was funny watching people try to bribe and coax her. For me, it was ‘we are doing this and here we go’ and off we would go!

Many, including a wonderful BHRR Volunteer that stopped by commented on how fast she has bonded to me and that really means a lot. Wherever I went, she watched me and wanted to go.

This is an excellent sign. 🙂

By this time in October, she should be ready to be placed up for adoption and is going to make a home an FABU addition!!

I have had no resourcing or other types of issues with her and she remains on the Gwennie boot camp program where the dogs all share water, communal toys and dog beds.

She is learning that her kibble is a high value item and I do not expect her to share that or any high value treat etc.

She is trust and respecting and that works both ways.

I would never set her up for failure and no future adoptive home will either……

Loving having her here! She is low maintenance, playful yet also very mindful of her manners and already sits and gives you a paw.

Her leash manners on the other hand need some work!! Already much better yet; still lots of progress to be made!

BHRR’s Jersey had her Vet appointment on Friday September 14.

She weighed a still thin 41.9 KGs(92.18 pounds) yet; this is dramatically up from when she first arrived.

I still would like to see another 15 on her at this time.

Around 110 pounds and she should look very lovely!

While she still has dander and old skin flaking away; her coat is becoming that glossy shiny stunning black!

She was sooooooooo social with everyone!! I was deeply thrilled! This is the GD that was crawling on her belly when she arrived to BHRR!

Her stubby tail wagged and she was a real trooper for her exam and vaccines plus hwt. We even managed to tackle those terribly overgrown nails of hers.

Her hwt came back negative on Monday yet; the fecal sample came back on Monday ( AND thank you dear BHRR’s Emmett!!) for Girarrdia. 🙁

So, despite proactively and preventatively de-worming all; she still became infected.

So, on to more Panacur she is and also added has been metronidazole.

I was very proud of her!! All the one-on-one work and patience and time and understanding and consistency including structure has paid off HUGE!

I wanted to bring her to the B&F community education and public awareness event on Saturday, depending on how well she did at the Vet visit with her worries plus stress and she passed with aces!

The reason why I did not bring her is due to her having some diarehea and feeling a bit tired from her vaccines and after all the excitement of that vet visit – we also hung around for about another 1.5 hours afterwards having a wonderful visit – and so, left her at home on the Saturday.

This girls was really broken in many ways and she is going to make it!!

She is going to be great in a home alone or with another dog that is a right matched personality fit; a quiet home yet; one that will keep her social development going strong.

She is fully housebroken and her new forever loving home when she is ready; can be one that works part-time, full-time, semi-retired, retired etc. all works!! She is quite versatile that way.

She has become quite affectionate and is an independent dog too as you can tell she has spent a lot of time by herself. 🙁 BUT, she is getting better and better about asking for love!

She is that mature girl. Not a jumping, barking, destructive puppy yet; can be playful too! 🙂

Her docked tail can sure wag and many find it cute. I find it sad that it was docked…..

We did a skin scraping on one spot that still had not had the hair grown back and no mites were found. She is also on revolution which would be the one treatment for démodéctic mites.

As several are aware, I was soooooo worried about this girl and one approved Volunter told me recently, that I would ‘reach’ BHRR’s Jersey and bring her back and honestly, I was not as sure. She really was ‘broken’. She was not withdrawn, not catatonic, not turned inward or shutdown; she was broken…. 🙁

BUT; she has found her way and those broken pieces are coming together and healing.

Love you BHRR’s Jersey!! You are a really nice and strong girl and sweet!! I am just starting to ‘see’ you and it is an absolute pleasure to meet you!!

Ever since I heard some news yesterday that did not sit well with myself nor several approved BHRR Volunteers who also were privy to this news; I have been thinking on making the proper blog post. AND, this one is a tough one for I want it as objective as possible and my personal feelings for BHRR’s Rain and also for justice and the truth run strong.

Yesterday, it was brought to my attention that the reason why the temp foster did not work out was due to BHRR’s Rain’s aggression.

I debated back and forth as to post or not on her blog and I decided to make a post as I believe in full disclosure – talk about all the good, the bad and any ugly of any dog under our authority and to hear something false being told as to why this temp foster failed; was quite unsettling.

I have to admit I was not thrilled and neither have been BHRR Board members. Three accounts of what did happen that day are well documented after an investigation was opened up by myself to demonstrate proper due diligence.

Furthermore, I contacted her Vet, reported the bite and a note was placed in her file by the Vet for legalities( no one directly involved wanted to investigate and felt this not necessary of any action). I respectfully disagreed.

This dog was set-up for failure and as it was not her fault, no one involved at the scene that day wanted to report the bite. I do believe in that full disclosure and as per her one blog, I even discussed that bite and circumstances.

For all those who have met and know BHRR’s Rain; I would love to have your testaments to post…. 😉

I know the Volunteers who heard this news yesterday were equally unimpressed. Some of their language was much more direct than mine when expressing their views on this falseness.

BHRR’s Rain; we know the truth as does the one that has made this false statement at least to one person(as it was passed to us today) abut this set-up for failure last November.

Additionally, I have kept all emails and voice conversations recorded and we are prepared to be as honest as always about the truth and reporting said truth to all the follow and believe in BHRR. 🙂

For because of what transpired last November, we cannot adopt out this amazing dog and while we did not put her to sleep as she was clearly not at fault; and she lives a great life with us( have to post her Vet video etc.); she can never have a forever loving family to call her own by being adopted.

BHRR’s Rain does not have one aggressive bone in her body. She lives in absolute harmony in our home and has lived with many dogs in her time at BHRR and shall experience many more in her lifetime and loves people, horses and even gpiggers!

She has been to events like TTP in 2011,walks/hikes, playdates, day trips, goes to work with me and visits friends and family and so much more. She loves on all that come to our BHRR ‘EXPERIENCE’ mini open houses and is a huge fav of many that visit/socialise in our home!!

FREEDOM DANES BHRR's Peanut and BHRR's Cobalt made the long drive on the 13th with me and a BHRR Volunteer to do the hv for a possible adoption.

BOTH did just fantastic in the car as always and BHRR's Cobalt had no space worries at all! Sometimes he can still get a wee bit cranky in the car if there are other dogs to jostle with or in doorways BUT very rarely these days!

BHRR's Cobalt walked into their backyard and home like a rockstar and every home visit and trip I do, this dog just gets better and better and better. HIS obedience is just amazing now! He will even give you a paw so endearingly to entice you to allow him to have more treats! LOL

Either dog would have been a good fit; yet; BHRR's Peanut was the better fit as their first preference was a female, a small GD(BHRR's Cobalt is close to 115 pounds now) and they have a lot of experience working with a dog that needs lots of patience, kindness and slow movements to carry forward on the strong foundation they have achieved to date at BHRR.

BHRR's Cobalt was such a goofy boy in their house, extremely social and neither dog could have cared less for the cat that was there! No issues AT ALL!

So, once again BHRR's Cobalt proves that he is fabu with cats and BHRR's Peanut just did me so proud herself!!! 🙂 She even went up and down their one flight of stairs as she trusted me. She had some troubles with their doorways and that is very commond with these FREEDOM DOGS. While we were talking she preferred laying under their table touching my feet and was calm and quiet and though there was a bit of pacing and panting in the beginning, that subsided and she relaxed as much as she could under all the new surroundings. With the detailed blogs, information package on her sent and the conversations we have had today, they should have optimum success with her.

Leaving her was hard…..yet, this is what I do day in and day out.

GOING to miss you my sweet girl!

AND BHRR's Cobalt your right matched forever loving home is out there! 🙂 I KNOW it is! 🙂

FREEDOM DANE BHRR's Peanut adopted Thursday September 13th!

BHRR's Blossom has told me that it shall be a FANTASTIC day!

At 8 AM she actually play-bowed as I was filling up the water AND for the first time EVER, she followed me outside(no leash!) and peed!

THUMBS UP! WTG! BHRR's Blossom! 🙂

OK! I just have to post this! VIDEO TIME!

BHRR's Blossom is having a HUGE breakthrough day!

On a side note: she is hanging around 31" at the whithers and her weight as of last Friday was just under 69 pounds. Poor thing! 🙁

Something just 'clicked' and relaxed in her very late last night and into the wee hours of the AM with me and she is now my 'wee shadow' and I am in WUV! 🙂 I mean, what isn't there to love with her????

As I have told many, she will be fine…..in time….and I have all the time in the world for her…..

I truly live a very blessed life!

Since BHRR's Blossom's arrival on September 7th, 2012; we have learned that she is not housebroken. She will get there! 🙂

She is one terrifed wee girl and since her arrival; unless we clip on a leash and walk her out of the house, she will not go. She will hide in her crate.

On the 11th, I made a breakthrough. Her crate is right by my computer. I have continued to offer her treats which despite her state of emaciation, she takes very gently from my fingers. VERY gentle.

On the 11th, I started with her crate door door closed, fed her BHRR's Journey's HEART biscuits(WHICH she loves and I have ordered more from Anna for her!) and worked my way further back until she was back toes in the crate and front end out and she was still taking the treats.

Most noises and sounds will starte her back into her crate yet with each passing day, she has become more brave and as of the 10th, she has come out of her crate wanting to enter the main area and so, on the evening of the 11th, I let her do her thing and she went right in and drank from the communal dog bowl.

She is now wonderfully integrated with most of the dogs and as long as no one comes up really fast from behind, she is content to not rush to me(OMG! My heart melts that she is beginning to trust me) or run to her crate that I leave the door open. As soon as she is brave again, she comes out.

I tried to take a video of what she did last night that just was a heartstopping awwwwwwwwwwwwww moment. She began to wag her tail – half mast when I use her name and she actually came to me! OMG! She came to me on her own accord for some love. I have to be very careful how I raise my hand and only touch her on the side off her neck and work my way up to her top of her head. The sides when you touch her are very skin and bones and she almost flinches, so I stick to her the sides of her face and top of her head and gently stroke her ears. WHAT a angry thing to know that someone kept her outside and her tips/edges of her gorgeous ears are frost bitten away. 🙁

At one point she just sighed and leaned her head into my side…..awwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww, ok, I am now gone hook, line and sinker! 😀 GLADLY!

She would leave me and come back to me at her will and OMG! HUGE HUGE HUGE! It has taken FOUR days to reach this point. Four days of patience, calmness, consistenty, routine and structure and no pressure!

I have taken some pictures from the 11th and you will see how her tail is tucked right up underneather her. These were taken on my brick deck and outside just makes her so afraid and that is putting it lightly. She is very worried about being left out there. What I have begun to do is feed her some of her meals outside on the brick and that is what she was doing and I was able to snap a few photos as cameras also terrify her.

She has had no issues with resourcing -shares the communal water bowl and is no wallflower for she was right in there with the mindset that ladies are first! 🙂 As I keep saying over and over again, these dogs that go through such hell are SURVIVORS and to be a survivor they have backbone, inner strength and the will to want to live.

People ask me do I think she will 'make it' and unless something terrible happens – bloat/tort etc., I see no reason why she will not 100% rehabbed over the next few months AND she is going to need months. Yet, when that time comes she will be ready to be placed up for adoption and that lucky home is going to get a fantastic dog. SHE is such a fascinating and beautiful creature. I think there is an imp in there somewhere and I aim to find out! 🙂

Right now, she is a far cry from that future and I am taking it one day at a time with her and taking those steps one day at a time.

I will not push her yet; I am not going to let her withdrawal into herself and I am going to give her opportunities and experiences of kindness and love.

She really needs some extra TLC if anyone may consider helping us to help her. BHRR has taken in some very critical cases of late and this is why we are here. Yet, like any r/q Rescue in the doing so, our finances are really tapped.

We are also entering our first food crisis of 2012 and only have about one week of food left. 🙁 We need your help to keep doing what we do……….

BHRR's Blossom – September 11th, 2012

On Wednesday September 5th, 2012; we received the following:

"I received this today from X and we discussed this case.  She is a stray and nobody reclaimed.  She is approximately 2 years of age, and weighs 57 lbs!!!  At this moment she has a grade 5 heart murmur but the vets feel that with more weight on her this may change and therefore needs to be rechecked.

She is in pitiful state.  At the moment she is very afraid of everyone and her surroundings. People can handle her, she shows no teeth nor growl nor aggression but she tries to hide into the wall, avoiding all contact.  She is being fed small amounts of food which she is devouring.  At this time, there is no evaluation to be done regarding food aggression.  Infact, she is in no state to be evaluated for much except for human aggression which she does not have.

Gwen – I know your hands are full with Concert, but I had to ask if you would consider this girl.  She needs help and also socialization or simply to feel secure with people.  It is very difficult to put a label on her at this time due to her condition.

Due to her extreme skeleton like physique, she will not be sterlized at this time.  I believe she had basic vaccinations but I will double check to make sure.

Please let me know if you can help this girl."

Without hesitation, we committed and transport was arranged to bring her on Friday September 7th, 2012 direct form the Shelter to Kanata Animal Hospital where I was working that day. I scheduled an appointment for 4:10 PM. THANK you Joy, Debbie & Karen for everything!!

Thank you Karen for the dog bed that she calls her own and has shared so generously with JS as he fought his own battle to stay alive this past weekend.

Small UPDATE September 7th after her Vet Appointment:

I am home now from work at the Hospital and from getting three dogs vetted today also.

She weighed 68.86 pounds, is between 10-11 months of age, her ear edges have been eaten away by frostbite, no HM heard( we will re-visit as she rehabs), lungs good, very petite GD, body score 2(like BHRR's Journey, BHRR's Atlas, BHRR's Veteran etc. when they first arrived to BHRR), victims of severe neglect.

She shall be fed 7-8 small meals a day, dewormed amongst other proactive, preventative care.

She is resting well and time to go snuggle dogs and feed myself!!

Cannot thank all those involved enough for getting her to me!! What a network of the best!!

For anyone wishing to donate to her Vet bills that we know shall be extensive, she already has a file set up at Kanata Animal Hospital under 'BLOSSOM' under the Birch Haven Rescue account:

BHRR's Blossom – September 2012

BHRR's Scarlett went in for her complicated spay on Monday September 10th, 2012.

Her weight was 38 KGS(83.6 pounds). After her complicated spay, she weighed 33.5 KGs(73.7 pounds). She had not been gaining weight even though she was pregnant and in fact was losing weight as she battling infection plus parasites at the same time. She had weighed just over 40 KGs on September 4th, 2012. She was one really thin girl to begin with and she was giving up all that she had to take care of those unborn babies.

Her uterus weighed 4.5 kgs(9.9 pounds). 🙁 She was between 43-45 days of pregnancy when spayed on Monday and at this time, doing the math 😉 BHRR had her for 16 days at the time of this spay.

Per Dr. Liston, she was very pregnant and she had at least 12 puppies in there….a lot…her uterus was one very huge and long sausage shape according to LAH.

Trying to birth these puppies would have most likely have killed her and possibly all or many of them.

Her sutures will come out with 12-14 days and I have her on Rimadyl and Deramaxx for pain management.

Despite feeling so icky, her tail still wagged when she saw me and thank you Margaret for picking her up after her spay to bring her back to me at KAH. THANK YOU!

This dog is sweetness. Low maintenance, no trouble at all and just soooooooooooooo sweet! The way that she looks up at you is humbling and while I still feel very sick to my stomach for what had to be for her, it was what had to happen.

Once she is healthy with a lot more weight, we shall vaccinate with her boosters and microchip her. In two weeks, I shall deworm her again.

THANK you Dr. Liston and LAH for taking such great care of my 'little Momma'!

On August 30th, I received the following request for assistance:

"My name is Caroline X, I work for the X Humane Society, on Aug 16 a 9mth old, female, St.Bernard x Great Pyrenees came into our care.  She is a very sweet girl, a favorite amongst the staff, unfortunately during our assessment she showed signs of resource guarding, she was fine with food and toy.  We do not have the facility or staff to help work with her through this.  She is a great, young dog but unfortunately we cannot adopt her here.  I have until Sept 13 to find her a rescue."

In asking for more information, I was told that her assessment was great up until the point when the evaluation just ended and they went to try and take the current rawhide away from her. She did not growl or try to bite, yet; the staff was not comfortable with how she 'looked'.

I said that BHRR would be happy to commit and yet, we would not have a spot until the week of September 15th and this HS was very happy to hold on to her until then. Once she arrives, she shall have plenty of structure and consistency under Gwennie's Doggie Boot camp! 😉

She is unspayed and about 80 pounds of weight at that time.

Below are a couple of photos of this stunning beauty!

She is scheduled to arrive on Saturday September 15th, 2012

NOT YET AVAILABLE FOR ADOPTION!

This is BHRR's Concert's fifth journal entry of her my wish for her 'warmth and love from caring people', a celebration of the life that she is going to be living for as long as we can give it to her in quality!

UPDATE September 4th, 2012:

BHRR's Concert had a lovely start to her day and ate well for me, was happy and loved her tug rope and was really perky; yet; as the weather became more poor; so did her demeanor. 🙁 She basically then ate virtually nothing nor wanted to drink for me until it was bedtime and then only with much coaxing did she eat her meds with a homemade cinnamon bun – THANKS to Sean.

She is now not eating the fish and is on to chicken and whatever she wants, she shall have!

We upped her pain meds today as this damp and rainy weather did not suit her very well and she seemed a bit unsure of her footing outside on the wet grass and sand……

She was suppose to have a quiet park date tomorrow in Manotick with Andrea yet; we shall see how her morning goes.

The weather looks good yet; this afternoon as the weather really went downhill, so did she…….

So, if need be, we shall just have more quiet time at BHRR with her two and four legged family and her next outing of LIFE/LOVE is scheduled for this Sunday up at a friends cottage.

I am truly amazed by how poorly she did once the weather turned. 🙁 She was so sad and could not settle to get quite comfortable.

She is now happily snoring with Sean after her cinnamon bun though! THUMBS up! 🙂

UPDATE: September 5th, 2012:

She ate well for me this AM, yet; no water and we shall see how she feels with all this glorious sunshine coming out!

I have cancelled her quiet park date and she is going to hang with me and the four legged crew at BHRR all day…

What a treat for me!! 🙂

The homevisit for BHRR's Peanut's possible adoption has been scheduled for Thursday September 13th. What better day that my 16th wedding anniversary! LOL

I asked what second choice of canine would they like to see me bring and they chose BHRR's Cobalt. Their third choice would be BHRR's Jetta.

I shall update as I can.

So, my Mr. Emmett continues to want to keep his medical bills rolling! LOL

His fecal came back with Giarrdia today….

So, we carry onward with the Metronidazole and Panacur…..

I will not vaccinate him until he is all clear medically and then neuter him.

SOOOOOOOOOOOOOO, for all those waiting to have playdates, daytrips etc. with him, you are going to have to continue to wait!!! cheeky

She is a Hurricane Isaac dog that was scheduled to be transported last weekend to BHRR yet due to a vehicle problem she had to be left behind BUT she was in the best hands possible!

When we committed to assisting her, we knew nothing other than that she was a female Great Pyr.

WE now know the following and I cannot wait to have her at BHRR for she is one special needs sweetie!

"She is probably around 8 years old. She has a tumor under her left armpit that is of concern and another mass on the top of her back left foot. She is about 20 pounds underweight. Her hips are giving her a swaggering walk. She might be a hot mess but she is the sweetest, gentlest girl and doesn't appear to be in any pain at all – though she may just be a trooper."

We have also been told that she is about 70 pounds and is about 20 pounds underweight. POOR thing! 🙁

ETA is now the weekend of September 15th and thank you to ARC and to Loyal Rescue Brenda for everything to make this happen!

THANK you ARC for what you do daily! I remain so humbled to have BHRR be one of your Rescue Partners!

BHRR's Shai ended up not making it to BHRR on Sunday September 9th, 2012.

On the Saturday, I received an email that there was vehicle trouble and while there was another vehicle able to assist, if they left her behind, the could fit the other 14 dogs travelling to Rescues onboard. If they took her, more dogs would have been left due to the space that she takes up being a Giant.

So, bummer! 🙁 🙁

I have been reassured that she is going to either ARC(Animal Rescue Corps) President's Scotlund's home or to ARC's Team Member Karla n Washington, D.C.. In fact, I was told that they love her so much that they want to change her name to 'Magnolia' and that I may not see her end up in our Rescue at all! LOL 😀

So, the plan is for her to arrive possibly the weekend of September 15th, 2012.

THANK you to all involved for taking such great care of all these dogs and for what you do daily!!! 🙂

BHRR's Emmett was scheduled to have his boosters on Friday September 7th and then be neutered next week BUT, the diarrhea that he has had off and on has not dissipated despite being de-wormed proatively and preventatively upon arrival to BHRR.

So, he came into work with me on Friday – I had three dogs vetted that day plus worked 10 hours just at the Hospital NOT to mention BHRR matters to tend to and I think I was rubber in the brain by the time I got home!

I know per the specialist that he could go from straining to poop to diarrhea due to his past prolapsed rectum and wanted this re-visited. Yet, his wee rump looks good! No temperature either.

So, we have postponed the vaccines and neuter which in turn, postpones when he can be placed up for adoption as we do not adopt out dogs not utd on vaccines NOR unaltered.

I also had the Vet re-listen to his heart and it is FABU! 🙂

In doing a fecal smear, he has the lovely bacterial infection of Campylobacter. Now, all dogs have Campylobacter yet, his is not normal levels. So, he is on metronidazole for the next 14 days.

I shall reschedule his boosters plus neuter once he is at the end of his course of treatment. AND when he is under, I shall remove the two deciduous teethies that he still has(he could still lose them as he is not even 6 months as of yet!).

BHRR is facing HUGE vet bills right now. With BHRR's Emmett, BHRR's Jersey, BHRR's Concert, BHRR's Hailey, BHRR"s Scarlett, BHRR's Blossom and all the annuals due for the FREEDOM DANES and we also have three new additions coming in within the week; if anyone would please consider donating to the BHRR Vet bills to help us; we would be so so so so very appreciative and filled with the absolute bestest of gratitude.

BHRR's Ani is ADOPTED!

On Friday September 7th, 2012; BHRR's Ani was scheduled to go to her temp foster family that night.

That same morning, I received an email from a previous approved BHRR approved adoptive home and they wanted to be seriously considered to adopt BHRR's Ani.

I put a 'hold' on BHRR's Ani to be temp fostered, advised the temp foster home of the situation and explained that we did not want to see a 'quick' bounce from us to them to an adoptive home. That would not be in her interest. I advised that I would keep them updated.

The previous approved adoptive home had their application submitted ASAP(did not take a non-refundable application fee as almost all the background was the same – only change was that one of our dogs was not in their home!) and we were able to schedule the home visit on Saturday September 8th, 2012

They were looking for a shorter GD due to their house and also to compliment the other GD they had adopted from us, yet; I wanted to bring two Great Danes that could be a lovely fit and so also brought BHRR's Jetta.

Just as when I did the home visit back in June for them with BHRR's Cobalt and BHRR's Shiva; either dog could have been a good fit. Their hearts were set on BHRR's Ani and they are aware of the work needed as effective human leaders to have absolute success in their home now that they have two dogs. YAY! 🙂

Below is a photo of the happy family! The home that adopted BHRR's Ani had also adopted BHRR's Shiva back on June 21st, 2012. I knew that they were thinking about a second dog at some point, not necessarily another Great Dane and imagine my absolute thrilling surprise to have received their email!

I updated the home that was going to temp foster her and offered up BHRR's Jetta who they had also really liked at their own hv or another possible great matched fit; yet; there is no rush for our dogs to go to temp foster homes at this time.

BHRR's Jetta – YOUR right home is out there! 🙂

BHRR's Petal is NOW AVAILABLE FOR ADOPTION!!!

While she came into BHRR with BHRR's Rose, we are not necessarily seeking a home to adopt them both. While it would be lovely and touching, we understand that it is hard for homes to adopt one dog, let alone two at a time AND we also support that this is not in the best interest of most homes and most dogs.

AND I honestly do not think being adopted together is in their overall best interest. Would not decine that right matched home yet; not necessary for both to go together at this time.

So, both have been trained plus rehabbed and worked with as a pair, in groups and as individuals for BHRR's Rose was standing up for and believing she had to take care of BHRR's Petal and they had to learn that they are the dogs and we are the leaders and we shall take care of them….WHICH was hard for them as no one had done so for them in the past….BHRR's Rose and BHRR's Petal are still very bonded yet; BHRR's Petal does not rely on BHRR's Rose to tell her if it is ok to do things or even to ask for permission or always allow BHRR's Rose to tell her what to do. Over time, both have really relaxed and began to be dogs….

They have both really bloomed and grown and their personalities have really begun to shine!

They both like to jump on me still and both are soooooooooooooo bonded to me and it is humbling to see how they look at me and trust me….

BHRR's Petal still has one eye that tends to run a bit off and on and the Vets have said that at this time, she is fine. I clean it when needed and she is sooooo good.,

They both ROCK on their recall! ON a dime!

Outside of BHRR is still a wee worrisome for them in the car and with leashes/collars BUT we are getting there. It scrares them to leave home yet; the more we go out and come back, the better they have become. They are actually beginning to enjoy the vehicles!

Both love running in the grass and playing chase with each other and talk about snugglers!!!!

BHRR's Petal still likes to sleep in a crate at night, door open and likes to eat in a crate. Like BHRR's Rose, she is not a great eater and the putting back on of the weight that was lost(after being putting on much needed weight after her coming to BHRR) from her spay has been a very long slow road. I like to see more weight on both of them….

BHRR's Petal will take treats from my hand, those BHRR's Journey Heart Biscuits are a HUGE hit!

As BHRR's Petal has developed into her own invidual dog, she has quite the happy go lucky spirit! BHRR's Rose is a wee bit more serious yet still a wee imp herself!

She can be adopted to a home that works ft, pt, from home, semi-retired, retired – any of those for she is a very versatile dog!

A quiet home without young children. You can tell kids did some bad things to these girls. They are still worried around my own two kids and their hearts and touches are full of love are winning them over.

Apparently, there were cats seized from where they were rescued from and they are both good with cats.

She needs a patience, loving, giving home. One that is not going to enable behavours that I have worked so hard to rehab. She is not to be coddled or hid away from the world that I have worked so hard to teach her can be loving and kind and special. She has been exposed to so many wonders – grass for one!!! OMG! They love the long grass! It is like watching my own kids when they were discovering all the fun that long grass can be – it tickles, you can hide and pounce on each other, you can play chase and hide and seek and roll in it and lay there looking up at the clouds AND even just have a snooze….so many delightful things!! My heart just catches watching their discoveries of all the joy to be had in truly living!!!

She shall only go to that right matched forever loving home and one that will not force her or bully her into things.

She is to be exposed to boundaries and opportunities and encouraged.

The journey these two lovelies have taken me on…..nothing short of breathtaking!

BHRR's Petal – August 2012

BHRR's Freedom is NOW AVAILABLE FOR ADOPTION!!!

Here are two videos of BHRR's Freedom from back in April of his first out of BHRR social experience. He did great! Thanks to the amazing home that allowd us over! He did fabu with their kids(3 very young ones and their two Great Danes).

VIDEO #1

VIDEO #2

As with BHRR's Peanut, he shall require a home that is going to be patient, kind, understanding and lovingly consistent to help him continue along her amazing foundation path developed at BHRR.

He prefers to sleep in a crate still – we leave the door open AND he loves receiving BHRR's Journey Heart Biscuits as his treatie when he goes in. He likes to eat in his crate and still will go to the back when you lay the bowl down. Slow and easy is the way to go, so as to not terrify him.

Fast and flighty movements, especially from strangers still make him worried and nervous and he still has moments of 'hitting the ground' if someone goes at him straight on or has a raised voice or is carrying a bowl. These are going to be his 'lifetime labour of love' items that in the right home, he shall continue to just get better and better.

He is very bonded to me and MAN! Does he love his butt scratches! 🙂 He will ask me for love and affection and my heart melts every time.

He would do best in a quiet home, no kids, no cats.

BHRR's Freedom says that he is still shy/worried in new and strange surroundings yet in that right forever matched home, he just knows that se shall continue to become more comfortable and brave…..

He is like the cowardly lion on the Wizard of Oz that needs 'courage'……

He shall require a very patient, quiet, understanding and lovingly consistent home that will not rush him and will continue to build upon all the strong foundation he has had built up at BHRR; yet; he is ready to take the next step with others.

He is shy and yet; when you earn his trust and respect; he is so loving and affectionate and he is always watching me….just watching and I see the love in his eyes and the desire to want to give all of himself and he has come so far in his relaxing and the acceptance in him is incredible. This boy went through absolute hell and I shall never see him put in a home that will raise anything other than a finger in love and kindness to him.

Taking his collar still makes him slink down and you stay calm and passively ignore with a calming word.

He has a mischievous side FOR when I want him to come in from the yard and he is not yet ready, he likes to dance and prance around me! LOVE IT! 🙂

AND if he wants to come in and the door has a dog laying on the steps, he will make this soft whine as he is not brave enough to go over them and is no bulldozer that will go through them like some…uhmmmm…right BHRR's Bloom and BHRR's Dana? LOL

He is playful, loves rope toys and he will thrive in that right matched forever loving home. One that is not going to push him, yet; expose him slowly to continued wonderful things that life can give him.

He is only going to get better and better here at BHRR and we will work with the home that proves to be the right one for him for continued success!

Car rides are still a bit rough for him yet, better and better and the more he goes in and comes home, the better it gets. He tends to lay there but is relaxing more and more.

I am sure going to miss this boy. I had a HUGE connection to him from the first moment I laid eyes upon him at the Emergency Shelter. AND from all that people have told me, he looks up when he hears and smells me when I went to their area and when I left, I know I had to always give him a personal good-bye and he would then lay down. I remember one day having to leave him as two others were more urgent to take that day and I promised him that I would be taking him next and very soon……

I can still well up over how tragic all of these FREEDOM dogs were but my welling up is now full of smiles!!! 🙂

He has had some really good social outings with myself.

He cannot be rushed yet; the world shall be laid at your feet for that right matched forever loving home that is prepared to give him all that he needs and is more than deserving and worthy of!

Cameras very much make him scared YET; he allowed me to take the below two gems last night! 🙂

BHRR's Freedom – September 6th, 2012

Unfortunately, the hearts and home of BHRR took another huge loss recently. 🙁

We have been trying to figure out for 11 straight long and worrisome days what has been going on with BHRR's Rambo and to help him.

His hotspots returned, his energy level went right down, he began to eat poorly and his coat was become less glossy and smooth. His eyes would not focus right all the time and his pupils were become quite dilated and uneven. His behavour was also becoming more cranky and you could tell he just did not feel well. He would whimper and whine off an on.

Sadly, all our testing and efforts could not save him. 🙁

He began to become very unpredictable with his behavour towards humans and other dogs and was sliding downhill fast. He was just not well.

A necropsy has revealed a brain tumour. 🙁

BHRR has had many successes this year and they make our hearts feel so warm and wonderful yet; it is those that we are unable to save that haunts me nightly. This is the really tough part of rescue. 🙁

I really really really really enjoyed this boy! He was an obedience superstar and was just glowing plus shining under all the structure and consistency of routine and loving guidance.

His personality was larger than life and he was soooooooooooooo good and smart and stunning!!!

My heart is ripped…..just ripped.

Thank you LAH for all that you did for him and us………….

RIP dear sweet BHRR's Rambo.

BHRR's Rambo – August 2012

HERE is the album on FB that I have been creating for BHRR's Concert and her incredible life of adventures and dreams fulfilled!

With how much I have on my plate these days, it is going to be very hard for me to post a blog here and posts/updates there, so I shall keep the link to her photo album current on her blog for people to virtually be a part of her living LIFE to the fullest!

This is BHRR's Concert's fourth journal entry of her my wish for her 'warmth and love from caring people', a celebration of the life that she is going to be living for as long as we can give it to her in quality!

BHRR's Sunday September 2nd, was full of relaxation, laying upon her back, four feet in the air chomping on one of her most fav things ever! A bone given to her by Maggie Bird and Derek Bird! She had lots of love, snuggles and cuddles with the BHRR family and really enjoyed resting on her bed on the lawn watching the young 'uns playing! She then had a lovely night chomping on her bone, four feet in the air while Sean tried to sleep…god, I love that man!!! What he does to support what I work so hard to do for the BHRR animals is nothing short of outstanding! 🙂

On Monday September 3rd, BHRR's Concert had a great restful AM and by the time I was getting ready to go, she was at that gate letting me know that SHE was coming…did not matter where, she was coming! 🙂 She was so happy and raring to go!

I posted 15 photos of her day in her BHRR FB Album. 🙂

FIRST STOP:

The Ottawa United Rescue Potluck! We stayed for just over 1.5 hours and she could have well stayed longer yet; we had another charming engagement to attend and as it as, ended up being about 15 minutes late(SORRY again Brenda!). Kim Dick did a fantastic job pulling this event together and BHRR's Concert and I had a blast! AN absolute blast! It is a good thing that in the past week, Maggie & I worked on that camera avoidance for she had PUP-ARAZZI all over her! 😉 She was given personal items of enjoyment and pleasure(fish, treats, collar x 2 and a leash etc.) and THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU! To all that donated to her body comforts and delights!

She was hugged and loved and there was no worry when I stepped away to get a plate of food for my daughter, that she was going to be missing a thing! She wanted to come with me, many commented again on how bonded she was YET, she was content to stay with others as long as I was in her sight and this was a HUGE HUGE HUGE step! Even up to days ago, she would pull people to get close to me….so, she is relaxing even more, enjoying life and people even more and trusting more and feeling so much more comfortable! EXACTLY what I want for her! She is just loving LIFE! Having fun, making many friends, having adventures and stealing her share of hearts in the process! 😉 AND as long as I am around, I do not have to be right there…..this was so beautiful to witness…like a flower blossoming under all this amazing positive karma! 🙂

I am still being sent photos of her with many people that took a few minutes out of their day to visit with her! THANK YOU to all sending me these photos as Maggie is helping me work on a very special project…..

I LOVED that other than a few 'had to happen' welling up of tears here and there, we were all just soaking up the gift of BHRR's Concert and just loving that she was having a blast!

Thank you to ALL that helped me get her and her stuff to and from the vehicle! I am so grateful to Maggie, Derek, Gloria, Suzanne, Kinsley, Anna and Laurie for those extra hands!

One of her gifts was my melting point…a collar/leash donated by Tracy & Jenn that people could write best wishes, notes, blessings and supportive words of encouragement to BHRR's Concert on……

SECOND Stop:

We had to leave and it was so hard to leave…I was still visiting dear friends and meeting new ones…as was BHRR's Concert…yet; off we went to our second locale….

This was a gift given to us by a lovely woman, Krysta to capture BHRR's Concert's life to the fullest and that she shall live forever through this gift…she arranged and paid for a photo session with a dear woman named Brenda and we are going to be the recipients of 2 x 5×7 photos! We also have the option to purchase more at a discount.

We were there for about 1.5 hours and BHRR's Concert just SHINED! She was feeling good and happy and living in the moment! She let us know when she was done and just turned her back! LOL As I keep saying, she is one of those dogs that for being so quiet, she sure talks LOUD when she has something to say! 😉

Cannot wait to view the photos! I had invited dear Gloria to attend with us, yet, I understand why not and I hope that she can come view the slideshow when it is ready. I also hope that Gloria will come on a picnic with BHRR's Concert and I for to see these two gems together is very heart touching.

THIRD Stop:

As BHRR's Concert was going strong and you could tell that she was not ready to call it quits, she was peppy and happy and trotting…..we went for a just over hour visit with her Auntie Caren! Caren lives near a lovely quiet park and we put her doggie bed down and plunked our butts on the ground for a good time! 🙂

Auntie Caren gave her a very yummy treat that she just gobbled up and also some BHRR's Journey Heart Biscuits and a stuffie…OMG! She just loved her goodies of pleasure and Caren has an aura of calmness and shining warm that just makes everyone around her just relax and soak it all up. I found myself just taking some deep breaths and letting go……I KNEW that BHRR's Concert would love Caren and she did!

At just past the hour and fifteen minute mark, BHRR's Concert stood up and faced the car and was ready to go home!

So, that is what we did and she ate a lovely supper, took her pain meds and is now snoring(shhhhh! Do not tell her that she snores) with Sean(he already knows he snores!) with Sean all snuggled up on the double bed in the rec room…..

What a SUPER day again for her…AND me!

Have I told each of you today, JUST how much I appreciate you and what you are doing for her????

Tomorrow is rest day…..and Wednesday is a quiet visit in a park in Manotick with Andrea. 🙂

Then she is resting to Sunday…..As her time is going to be drawing closer, I want her resting and relaxing as much as she needs. She may not feel she needs it as much as I do….but, she has friends and loved ones at home that also want and need time with her……BHRR's Maggie May and Guinness and Bunker Dude really love her……

AND that is her latest update! 🙂

BHRR's Concert – enjoying a very special gift basket and cuddling with Sean

So, I know some have been waiting to read BHRR's Scarlett's update……

I took her to see Dr. Liston at Liston Animal Hospital today and her weight was just over 40 Kgs(88 pounds).

Dr. Liston(the same Vet that saw BHRR's Concert and does the cruciate and amputation surgeries on the BHRR dogs such as BHRR's Jaxson, BHRR's Potter, BHRR's Ava Marie, BHRR's Apollo etc.) did a full exam on her:

She was given ointment for her eyes – one eye had a slight green discharge as of today and Dr. Liston said her eye does not look red yet; put her on some ointment. She is also on antibiotics for the next 14 days. 375 mg of Novo Clav SID.

He checked her lungs and heart and mouth and in examining her tail, discovered why it is so stumpy. If you part the hair, you can see a scar and no hair – her tail had been docked at some point. That explains that!

We did bloodwork for HWT, full CBC and a presurgical bloodscreen.

He examined her abdomen plus teats and agreed with me that she is very much pregnant. While not lactating as of yet; she is pregnant. Dr. Liston explained that in early pregnancy, one can feel each puppy as a hard golf like lump. Then, he said there is a stage that everything feels like a long sausage and you cannot feel any individual puppies. Then, in the later stages, an experienced Vet can feel puppies again. Dr Liston says that she is in the middle 'sausage' feel stage.

Dr. Liston pegged her at around 7 weeks(42 days). Gestation can be anywhere from 57-63 days. She is just entering the time where all those bodily changes just begin to really manifest themselves, so, he said it made sense that since Saturday, Sean & I would note many bodily changes with her belly and nipples.

SO, let's do the math….BHRR brought her into our program on August 26th, 2012 and we are now September 4th, 2012. We have had her for 9 DAYS now.

I had thought around 30 days(yet, I am no expert!) and we had the very serious discussion surrounding can we safely spay her. I asked if we could do x-rays to see if there are any skeletal systems and was aware that if we were too early, we would not see anything. I asked Dr. Liston at what stage of gestation can we begin to see and Dr. Liston says that skeletal systems can be seen usually beginning around day 43 of gestation. LEARNING a lot with my visit with Dr. Liston…more than I ever wanted to know…. 🙁

Yet, he said let's do the x-rays and go from there as to whether we are in a safe stage to spay or not for her.

The first one of x-rays did not develop right – she was not quite right on the table(they do not have digital x-rays) and so, all sat on edge as another round of x-rays were done.

When Dr. Liston discussed them with me(he also showed me what he was looking for); I could see what he was referring too. He pointed out that BHRR's Scarlett is just beginning to demonstrate skeletal system development and so, based upon that finding; he said she was more like 35+ days. So, she is in-between what I originally thought and Dr. Liston felt upon just doing an examination. Dr. Liston was very impressive with how thorough he was plus patient, answering my million 'why' and 'when' questions etc.

NONE of which made me very happy for her. 🙁 Poor baby…she is a mere puppy herself.

This was a dog that was suppose to have been spayed by the Shelter; yet in their urgency to save her from being pts sent her on a transport that then turned into the shelter not having all the paperwork completed(she was one of four dogs that had to stay back due to this paperwork incompletion) and we had to pay for boarding for a week in Ohio and get her on a transport a week later. If she had been spayed at the shelter OR if she had arrived to BHRR when originally planned; we would not be looking at 35+ days of a pregnant dog. 🙁

Getting back to Dr. Liston's appointment with her though….so, in reviewing the x-rays(if it was digital, would post it here as all know how I post so much in a Gwennie novel!), you could see about 4 very very very small white lines beginning and there is most likely quite a few more in there that are not yet quite showing up. Very very very small white lines – to me almost like just a long dot and when Dr. Liston had me step back and review the x-ray from further away; you could see the 'shape' and the 'white dotline'.

So, Dr. Liston and the whole staff is very much aware of my position on spaying and neutering and he said that yes, she was still early enough to spay and we have scheduled her spay for Monday. He and his techs are supportive of why she should not be having puppies – she is a baby herself – even less than 11 months possibly and this is the best thing for her and I know that this decision is not going to sit well on several and that is unfortunate.

She should not be having babies and breeding should be left up to the experts and it is not just the cost and time involved; there are all these dogs/puppies already born that are hurting for homes and most of them shall end up being pts as there are not enough homes for them.

BHRR believes in full disclosure. Always has and always will and it could have been so easy just to say; she is being spayed and no background given re: her possibly being pregnant and having it confirmed etc. YET, we believe in educating and informing and PLEASE people; spay and neuter your pets….babies should not be having babies and dogs should not be bred without serious health testing and left up to the r/q show breeders who are out there not only preserving the breeds that we love yet; constantly improving upon their own lines. Breeders who bred very rarely, have contracts, screen homes AND are there to take their dogs back should the purchasers homes not work out…..NOT left to r/q Rescues to clean up and pick up the pieces and do right by these dogs.

Breeding is not about throwing two dogs together, it is not about having your children experience the miracle of birth, it is not about you just wanting to have a piece of your current dog and is is not about making money, exploiting dogs and making them have lives of misery for the benefit of bybers and puppymillers.

BECAUSE people did not do right by BHRR's Scarlett(she could even have been made pregnant by her brother that was adopted the day before the first attempt at transporting), BHRR shall have to 'clean' up. AND you know what, it sucks….it really does. Now, even in the spaying, there is always a risk to her…there is a risk even if we did not spay to her own life.

I value life….I cherish life….and do not think that I do not feel ill to my stomach for the lives that shall be aborted….35+ days or not and at the time of spay, she shall be 41+ days.

This was one of the worst blogs I have ever had to write.

SHAME on those that breed irresponsibliy and without thought and care…….SHAME!

AND one more time…..

SO, let's do the math….BHRR brought her into our program on August 26th, 2012 and we are now September 4th, 2012. We have had her for 9 DAYS now.

September, 2012 – This is BHRR's Concert's third journal entry of her my wish for her 'warmth and love from caring people', a celebration of the life that she is going to be living for as long as we can give it to her in quality!

UPDATE: BHRR's Concert had a simply heavenly day on Saturday September 1st –

*She started off her day with visits at KAH from Krysta and her dear hubby (I microchipped a couple of their dogs today and for the kindness they have showed to BHRR, I donated several microchips to their Rescue). They donated some really yummy fish for BHRR's Concert! Thanks for the visit, as short as it was AND I cannot wait to unveil the very special memorable gift you have bestowed upon BHRR's Concert! 😉 THANK YOU! THANK YOU!

*BHRR's Concert then had a very sweet lovely surprise visit from BHRR Volunteers Lesley and Martin at KAH and they made BHRR's Concert feel very relaxed and safe. She had a lovely wee visit with them and THANK you for the time you gave to her today and for the yummy treatie for her!

*BHRR's Concert then had visits from Lynn & Al, Maggie Bird & Derek Bird and was once again surrounded by positive energy and wonderful karma and THANK you to each home for all the personal items of comfort and joy for her to relish and savour! The chicken was a HUGE hit!

*BHRR's Concert then went over to have a visit with Auntie Sarah and her sweet crew of Ali, DD, Paris and Abby. Auntie Sarah gave her some very special homecooked salmon and even handfed it to her! 🙂

**Thank you to Maggie and Derek Bird in hanging out with us again today and for the photos and assistance to help me capture BHRR's Concert 'LIVING LIFE**

BHRR's Concert came home so relaxed and happy and content. I know that her dreams tonight shall be filled with the best ones EVER! Deeply, from my heart; I truly reach out with my heart to thank everyone for helping me fulfill this wish of mine for her! The sad news is that the Cancer has begun to diminish her lung capacity and our time is ever precious with her…..AND that tumour is now bigger…..BUT her tail was all wags and she pranced and danced and explored and did some trotting to show everyone that she is thriving and not ready yet to leave us……

Sunday, she rested and hung out with her friends at BHRR…….it is very important for me to make sure that she rests and eats and drinks and does not overdue things…..AND she is showing me that she is having so much quality of life!!! LOVE HER! LOVE LOVE LOVE this dog! A dream/gift to those that touch her and those that she shall touch.

September 1st, 2012 – growing. 🙁

I cannot change her past(as much I would like to) nor what shall happen all too soon in her future BUT I can sure give her; with the amazing folks that are helping me; the best life can offer as her present!

AND I honestly would like to believe that many out there would do the same for their dying loved ones. AND with the way that the community has stepped up to assist in helping me have her live the life she is living right now; I really believe that…..so much good out there….there really is. The community is making dreams come true for her! She has learned about soft dog beds and that touches do not mean pain and having to flinch away and that at night, I will go outside with her if that is what it takes for her to pee and not feel like she is abandoned. That she can trust and relax(AND she is so much more relaxed now than she was) and people are surrounding her to take care of her and see that she is not doing without and has every possible comfort. I am deeply humbled and touched and in awe of the sheer warmth of everyone out there!!! 🙂

Lynn & Al – September 1st, 2012

I am calling first thing tomorrow re: BHRR's Scarlett.

From all body signs given, IF she is pregnant, she is about 30 days. BHRR has ONLY had her for 8 days and oh my WHAT changes Sean & I have seen in these past few days.

So, let's all do the math….. 😉

In talking to one person today, they postulated if she is just coming out of a heat….If that was the case, the shelter would have noticed…..or those that transported her that one day to the boarding facility as the paperwork was not in order from the shelter and she and several other dogs were not able to cross the border at that time.

So, tonight as BHRR's Scarlett(who arrived 6 days ago) went outside; I looked at her closely and then looked at Sean and then at her and then at Sean…..

Just as I was about to ask – 'does she look like she is gaining weight as if she is pregnant?'; Sean says 'does her nipples look very swollen and mature to you?'

We look at each other and then I have my hands all over BHRR's Scarlett and then I look at Sean and said, it is one of four things:

1) false pregnancy
2) possible heading into heat
3) weight gain for she was a bit ribby arriving last Sunday
4) pregnancy

Then, I sit and watch her real close. I am not liking the way that belly is looking….

So, her original appointment at the Vets was suppose to be last Monday yet; I was at emerge and it had been rescheduled to the 14th of September with her spay to follow shortly afterwards; BUT; I am calling first thing on Tuesday and am heading in ASAP!

With this past week with BHRR's Concert's immediate needs; I have perhaps missed a possible earlier sign of a possible pregnancy. I freely admit to not being an expert as I have never bred a litter yet; there are signs I am a bit; ok; well lot worried about.

AND if she had arrived to BHRR when she was originally suppose to; her appointment at the Vet's would have been even a week earlier than what was scheduled this past Monday.

AND as most who follow the BHRR blogs should know; with the most recent 'possible' of BHRR's Emma(which turned out not to be a pregnancy); we shall abort if this is the early stages.

Once again; I understand how this is a controversial subject to some yet; I stand by all the same reasons I stated with BHRR's Emma that include that having her whelp a litter is adding yet more animals in a system where so many already do not have homes. I stand firmly that only certain dogs should be bred, that breeding should not be taken lightly and that breeding should be done by highly r/q show breeders.

So, while there will be a few(again) who think it cruel to abort an early pregnancy ( would not ever jeopardise BHRR's Scarlett's health if it is too late in stage); should it be shown that she is pregnant – I invite you to come to my home and help ensure that she receives all the special prenatal care she deserves, be there around the clock for whelping time; prepare a whelping box, prepare for the very real possible of having to rush to emerge for a c-section(in the wee hours of the AM quite possible); prepare to have some survive and others not; prepare for possible tube feeding every two hours should mom not be able to feed or reject them or dies; prepare for vet visits for exams and boosters and altering and assist me with microchipping and the feeding of mush to kibble and what if any are special needs pups and begin to housetrain after weeks of cleaning up after them and the sleepless nights and the cost of it all…..thousands and thousands and thousands of $.

My commitment to BHRR's Scarlett is just that my commitment and dedication to her welding and *if* she is pregnant and if, it is too late to spay; you bet I shall be first in line to make sure all the above and then some is done and done to the best of the best of how it should be.

First step, see if she is pregnant first though… 😉

Relaxin testing, x-rays and u/s coming up!

She is integrated with all here and doing very well. Likes to hump our Kingston and try to push our Cherokee around and is very Pyr in many ways!!

The stumpy tail is black lab though!! While her brother looked Pyr/Newf; she is small and compact like a lab with a Pyr face and 'tude while at the same time is sooooooo affectionate!
