HERE is a wonderful blog post sent my way from the home that had a wonderful play visit with her on December 31st. THANK you to this lovely home for offering to do this!! 🙂

BHRR’s Reese’s First Visit

We were very happy (and a little nervous) for BHRR’s Reese first visit to our house.  First a little background- our house is a bungalow with the living room separate from the kitchen with multiple doors unlike Birch Haven that is more of an open concept layout.

BHRR’s Reese came in the door with Gwen and Kinsley into our porch which made her a little nervous.  It is very small so not many steps to be taken before you find a wall.

Once inside, BHRR’s Reese very quickly got busy making her map.  For the first visit, we limited the space to the living area, kitchen and a small part of the hallway.  She very quickly decided that she liked the kitchen best which, of course, had to be the one with the most obstacles.  It did not take her very long to maneuver her way around and figure out where everything was because, for BHRR’s Reese, there are no obstacles!!

Onto the living room which I had reorganized to create open floor space.  Not as many things to count around so she very quickly got that figured out except for one thing- my daughter had been seated on the floor in the middle of the room and then decided it might be better to be against the wall and moved.  BHRR’s Reese already had her located in her original spot and returned quite a few times wondering where that “thing” had gone.

BHRR’s Reese found a rope toy in the living room all on her own and got busy playing with it.  She also was comfortable enough to be relaxed with one of my children for a nice belly rub.

Oh, one thing that I forgot to mention- this was all done with various members of my canine crew present.  First, one at a time for the initial introduction and then with all three and BHRR’s Reese together.

All I can say is that it was absolutely amazing to watch.  Were there a few bumps along the way?- of course but most of the time BHRR’s Reese found things in front of her with her feet first.  This is one wonderful dog and it is very hard to believe in watching here that she cannot see.

We are just leaving from a very wonderful and special playdate visit with Dobie Doll aka BHRR’s Bambi Doll Reese!

Whether there is or is not an approved adoption in early 2014 is not what I take home with me today….that is secondary.

I take home an incredibly special puppy to many of us that has proven yet, again how ‘normal ‘ she really is!! What a great additional experience she had to help make her that much more of a well rounded and balanced sweetheart!

While our day at BHRR started off in one direction, we go home and heading into the New Year in the best direction possible – with amazing good and kind dogs, friends, family, supporters and believers our sides…..

Thank you to this home for opening up their doors to is this afternoon!! Thank you for so much in giving Dobie Doll an extremely great time! Us, humans too….

Happy New Year with such warm wishes from the BHRR and Boers Clan!!

May 2014 find all filled with warmth, happiness and a healthy home and heart with those they care about and vice versa!

AND do not drink and drive!!!

Here are the x-rays of BHRR’s Noelle – they are taken with Autumn’s phone as they are ‘developed’ x-rays, not digital…and, the words written by the one ortho specialist who saw her. Two Vets now concur that this leg should be amputated ASAP. However, he does not believe it should go immediately due to her managing as well as she is at this time on it. In the near future yes, yet, not ‘yesterday’. However, only one part of the picture was seen as we learned that only one view of her leg was taken with the x-rays.

For some reason, only x-rays of one view was done and we need to see straight on and inside and so, she is scheduled to go back for X-rays, this time at KAH on Friday January 3rd, 2013. This also explained why she did not require sedation as to do the other two views is very difficult without sedation – no matter how great the dog – and with her minimal flexion and chronic pain, would be impossible.

We are going to get the additional x-rays, Dr. Philibert will then review himself along with the first specialist and advise. There was discussion on a possible ‘fusion’ surgery yet, there is no elbow(what is on the other side view?) and, what is there is small and malformed. With all the x-rays, there will be a much clearer plus better picture formed and when this leg should be removed…two Vets believe right now and two more Vets, one being a specialist shall also becoming involved in her case, so that the best decision can be made for her….. 🙂 I am thinking sooner rather than later myself.

We also did a microchip, bw, de-worming has begun plus she is on revolution. She was fully examined by two different Vets – heart, lungs are all yay! 🙂 She weighed 16.5 KGs(36.3 pounds) and needs to lose a few pounds for her age/size at this time. I suspect possibly a beagle influence in there somewhere.

“Part of her elbow is gone, elbow does not fully flex, and there is crepitus in it. Can walk on it, but limps and when rests, shifts weight on it.
There is no detectable anconeal process, and, the lateral portion of the distal humerus is malformed and small.”

ON our way to KAH today. 🙂
By the time I went to bed last night(OK! This AM – after 3 AM), she was asking to sit on my lap and, if I was not sitting on my computer chair, she wanted to be laying on it. 🙂
She had a quiet night….ate a bit, drank a bit…..and was wagging her tail at me by the time I went to sleep.
She traveled well into KAH AND, here is a small video of her…
SHE wants to THANK all of her ANGELS for thinking of her, the consideration to her bills and, falling in love with her! 🙂
She is off to LAH for 2 PM, thanks to Autumn’s assistance and, an update shall be posted after her exam and x-rays. I will also be microchipping her today.
AND, not sure if it was Fil or Karen yet, thank YOU for that gorgeous purple collar for her! 🙂

I still find it so hard to wrap my head around that she was beaten and picked up and thrown…. 🙁 🙁

BHRR’s Angel Noelle – December 28th in emerge temp foster home & on transport December 29th, 2013
*Rottiex(I suspect Beagle in there, yet could be wrong!)

I am going to focus on some ‘good’ news…….I will post more on BHRR’s Angel Noelle a bit later….wish, life was easier than it can be…. Yet, we shall prevail and do right by her!!!

Tomorrow, I am taking a very special wee Dobie doll to do a hv for a possible future adoption…..just a playdate…and, play visit to see how things go….

This home has followed her literally from Day 1 and, is no stranger to Dobermans, or special needs dogs and, her IS does not phase them…..she may have more, she may never have another….her last one was December 20th…

So, think positive and good vibe feelings for BHRR’s Reese and the home! This is another approved home that has adopted from us in the past and, is dear to us….

If if does not work out, that is ok….it was then not meant to be…not pressure on dog or home.

BHRR’s Reese – December 24th, 2013, BHRR Traditional Christmas Eve Photo’s – the bag is from her amazing SS Group!

AND, what night would be complete WITHOUT a HQD story with a new addition here….
You know you have been just waiting for another one of her! 😉
Well, when I arrived home with BHRR’s Angel Noelle, I placed her carefully into a large crate…and, went to grab a bit of water to also place in her crate.
As I was walking back to her crate, I saw HQD sitting in front of the crate and, well….you know by now, giving me ‘that look’…you know the kind…head tilted slightly to the side, and imagine if she could fold her front legs like arms, and, tapping a foot most impatiently at me….
AND, here goes my mind…’oh lord…what now….think, Gwennie..THINK…’ ‘What does Salma want?’!
AND, Sean is smiling for he is just happy NOT to be the object of her displeasure or disapproval…
AND, here I am all alone in the ‘stink eye’ of the storm of HQD…
As I get closer to the crate, very cautiously of course… ….I see that HQD has one of her blankets with her….
AND, lightbulb!! Well, I think I have the light bulb moment…
I say ‘oh, how sweet, YOU want me to give her one of your special blankets to use!’ ‘what a good girl’
AND, you know this is coming……the sigh..that big body sigh that ONLY HQD can do…”WRONG Gwennie..AGAIN” is what that sigh means….along with ‘HOW can this person be so dumb?”! :p
I then get it right…I realise that it is NOT me that she wants to put the blanket in the crate, it is HQD herself! WHY have I not yet realised that I am second rate to the best doctor, nurse, therapist EVER in HQD?!!!
I open the door and bow to the royalty of HQD and say ‘after you…’
With nary a glance my way, she strides right by me and walks into the crate, with blanket in tow and begins to tuck in BHRR’s Angel Noelle with it….yup, HQD to the rescue…again!
THEN, as I wait patiently for the blanket has to be JUST right around ‘her patient’, and, then to come back out…HQD then nestles her own body around BHRR’s Angel Noelle after she is all covered in to her satisfaction and gives me one last look of ‘contempt’ and closes her eyes….
I walked away and grabbed a tissue….LOVE BHRR’s Salma…gawd, HOW I love her…no matter how much of a boot camp she keeps me in…this dog is something magical…..very special and so many of us know it…
BHRR’s Angel Noelle, you could not have a BETTER beautiful canine angel in your corner…..
IF HQD says it is ‘so’, then it it is happening….
WELCOME TO BHRR little one…

AND…..we have a date!! BHRR’s Prince Eggo Belfast is leaving is to go to his new forever loving adoptive home on January 5th, 2014!!

Yay! He will be our first official adoption of 2014!!

BHRR’s Belfast, I shall miss you tons!!!

2013 saw 13 amazing BHRR doggies adopted.

BHRR's Groves went on a short play date visit for a few days with approved BHRR's Volunteers! Our visitation program is a HUGE hit at BHRR and I stand by how important it is to our BHRR "CHAIN OF SUCCESS' for every dog to keep them being the best dogs they can be. To contribute to them being more well balanced and balanced also.

This is from his play date home when I touched base on the 29th to see how things were going:

"It's going we'll!  He's a real cutie!  🙂 We see now about the resourcing….but I think we've worked it out.  😉 "

Below are two photo's from a community education and public awareness event that we attended at PV Stittsville 'THANKS FOR GIVING'
He was so popular!

Here are BHRR's Kaden's XMAS Eve Photo's as part of our tradition at BHRR! Sean did not think I could get BHRR's Kaden comfortable enough, and, I said 'Kaden can do this'….and, he did! Lots of cheese curds helped make him comfortable yet, I would never force him to do something, he did not want to do.

Kaden is nervous around camera's. REALLY nervous yet, he trusted and, relaxed in time and, by the end of the photo session, he did not want to leave and, let me get photo's of the next dog! LOL

BHRR's Kaden December 24th, 2013! ISN'T he SO handsome! 🙂 Look at his shiny glossy coat! 🙂

All of us at BHRR wish ALL of our friends, family plus extended family AND to all the r/q rescue folks we know out there, the very best this Holiday Season.

We hope that everyone as always, is surrounded by health, happiness and the warmth of loved ones this holiday season…..

For us, we find this a time of much reflection, and, giving plus sharing to/with others………

On Christmas Eve, BHRR was contacted re: a very urgent terrified puppy in imminent danger – at 12 weeks of age, she was beaten and her elbow/leg was broken by her O. For the next 12 weeks, she remained untreated for this terrible injury and though, her broken leg tried to heal on it’s own, it is infected and she is in incredible pain.

Amputation has been advised per one Vet recommendation at this time….the O. wanted her gone ASAP and, in mere hours of notification and some angels behind the scenes helping at a moment’s notice, this puppy is now safe.

Though, like most r/q groups out there, we are full and Vet/Food Bills continue to mount, it was clear that we were contacted for a reason and, we stepped up as it is Christmas and she, is now safe and we shall work on transport over the next few days to get her to BHRR.

As promised in a thread recently re: names, this girl shall be named ‘Angel’ – BHRR’s Angel Noelle in fact shall be her full name…..

Thank you to the special rescue angel that contacted me and thank you to the rescue angel that got her out on Christmas Eve so fast and, we shall post as we work further in getting her to BHRR. AND, thank you to the special rescue angel that stepped up to emergency temp foster one of our adoptables so, we had a spot here….to think, that all of this happened within a couple of short hours….that, is amazing!!! THANK YOU! THANK YOU!

This wee one is going to need a strong village/community by her side and, I remain hopeful that people will shower her with all the love and care that she was denied up to this point….

I shall rest more easily knowing that at least one more dog is now safe………

Merry Christmas to ALL!!!

Photo sent my way of one of her angels….

BHRR’s Bishop and Mr. Mexico AKA BHRR’s Cancun had their annuals today!

Sir Bishop weighed a lovely almost 127 pounds!
Mr. Mexico weighed just under 135 pounds….looking good, yet, with the cooler weather, he is more active and has lost about 5-7, so, we had been upping his food doling and doing well!
Both received THUMBS up at their Vet exams AND, both are still patiently waiting for their right matched forever loving homes to find them!
BHRR’s Bishop even had a mani/pedi from the lovelies at KAH today.
They hope that Santa will be good to them for being so awesome today at KAH and from what I have seen….their SS’s have spoiled them like the amazing dogs they are!!!
My Christmas wish for them is that Santa may help their forever loving homes find their way these two really incredible dogs!!!
Until then, they live like kings with us……….
AND Mr. Mexico was quite the ham with his vet today…from releasing his anal glands to rolling over and getting tons of belly rubs! His Vet marveled at how soft and great his coat looked – even minus some of his back and tail feathers from an encounter with a burr bush recently………

The BHRR Purse Puppies were seen by the Vet today.
BHRR’s Chanel(Coco) now weighs 5.2 kgs(11.44 pounds)
BHRR’s Coach now weighs 6.3 kgs(13.86 pounds)
She is still a wee bit on the thin side yet, doing well. She has confirmed bilateral immature cataracts, poor vision bilaterally.
He is on the ideal to just broaching…porkchop status. He has immature congenital cataracts bilaterally, vision poor in L eye
I felt comfortable giving him his DAPP yet, I am going to hold off on her for a wee bit longer.
HUGE HUGE HUGE hits with all the staff and, we will monitor their eyes as they mature/develop. If we need to do any eye removal or eyes removed, we shall…whatever they need. Somehow, the BHRR community and village comes together to assist those in desperate need….will keep the updates coming!

BHRR’s Groovy Grove’s is NOW AVAILABLE FOR ADOPTION! 🙂

Ideally, we would love to see him in a home with at least one other like minded best matched personality fit dog. He can go to a home that works ft, pt, from home, semi-retired etc. ANOTHER wonderful versatile BHRR doggie!

He is great with all people and when it comes to all dogs, if you are calm and confident, so, is he. We do not know what his ‘X’ breed is….we, are looking at doing a DNA test to rule out PB, to make sure that he would be placed responsibly if so – out of the province of Ontario.

He will resource and, has come a long way with ‘sharing’ water and toys. High value items, such as smoked knuckle bones are not given to him around other dogs. He had some fear when he first arrived and when he first arrived, in unfamiliar stressful settings would do a fear growl ONLY at some other dogs(never humans) yet, as mentioned above, if you are calm and confident, so, is he and he has not had any of that behavour in many many many weeks.

He is eager to please, very obedient and has come to several of our BHRR Community Awareness and Public Education Events – PV Stittsville for the ‘THANKS FOR GIVING’ event in October and on November 30th at PV Hazeldean AND just this past weekend, he was back at PV Stittsville for photo’s with Santa!

He will go to an experienced dog home. Not necessarily, an experienced Neo, or Boxer or whatever his breed combination are type of home. Some even say Neo/GDx.

He is 100% housebroken. He was about 12 weeks around October 1st, 2013. He is just over 5 months now. He is neutered(The shelter did a pediatric neuter prior to him coming to BHRR), utd on vaccines, microchipped, de-wormed, on revolution and has had obedience work plus has been fully assessed/evaluated.

He is a wonderful boy! In the right hands, he shall continue on that route. He is SO happy…that butt wags ALL the time! 🙂 He is a HUGE fav at BHRR and has fans all across the globe! 🙂 This boy is very special to several of us for it is very strongly believed that he was saved in by an incredibly beautiful rescue angel who had crossed over recently. If it were not for ‘her’ and, that many people believed they saw ‘her’ on the ramp ‘looking for a specific on this earth rescue angel'(they worked very closely together) that led down to where the dogs are kept prior to being gassed, this boy would not be here today. Believe in these words or not, for me, to know that it was not one or two or three that saw this RIP person on this ramp of the shelter that she worked at for 26 years, looking and asking people that had not yet known that she crossed over for this other person, is up to you. 😉 🙂

All, I know is that I had to name this boy after this wonderful soul. The last dog that BHRR brought in that she saved in life was BHRR’s Flint and, we have the first dog that she saved in death, and, he is her namesake….read this blog and call all of us crazy, yet, I will not question the fates that brought everything into alignment and that this puppy is now saved.

Below are two photo’s of him from November 18th, 2013. There are some holes in his blog history posts to date(ie how he came to be at BHRR etc.) and I, shall add through time ASAP and one has to go right to the bottom of the page and read in chronological order to read all of his blogs. I do not wish to hold him up from being placed up for adoption any longer as I work to get the blogs updated. He battled Giarrdia and is now ‘clear’ and, can go up for adoption! 🙂

BHRR’s HQD HERSELF! BHRR’s Salma! – Over 9.5 years YOUNG!
December 14th, 2013 @ PV Stittsville!
She ‘owned’ this store that day….just happy and exploring, taking notes of who was ‘naughty’ and who was ‘nice’ and LOOK at her body condition!!! Look at that muscle tone/mass!
This was the dog that could not walk back in February 2013!
This was the puppy breeding machine, kept in deplorable conditions, had a penetration injury that had been left untreated and had a MCT that required emergency surgery. Sadly, the Cancer was already in her lymph nodes, so a BHRR Haven Doggie she became and she has blown all expectations by so many that she is not only still here with us yet, look at her!!! DOESN”T she look just stunning!
Now, that she is on treatment for her UTI, she is happier and healthier and NO way is she going to leave us anytime soon! NOT if I have anything to say about it!
She is not going to let CANCER steal her away from us, anytime soon, like her Vets/Specialists prepared us for a few weeks ago, saying that it was progressing quickly now. AND, her Vet Team says that they continue to love being proven wrong!
Cannot wait to see her ‘official’ Santa PAWS Photo’s! 🙂

Thank you from my soul and beyond for any possible consideration to her care……even a $1 donation is super!! :)

BHRR’s Aslan UPDATE & Short Video Below:
He got to hang out at KAH today. He had a lovely, if short visit with Auntie Margaret, and weighted 37.1 KGS(81.66 pounds). I would like to see about another ten on him, not too much more than that….
He is either a small male Leonberger or a mix and for that right matched forever loving home, it shall not matter.
He had a heart worm test, presurgical bw, was microchipped, had a manicure/pedicure, full exam(aced!), obtained his next tube or revolution and had his vaccines.
He began his de-worming protocol when he first arrived to BHRR and a fecal shall also be performed.
I asked some of lovelies that I work with to give him treats and that was huge for him! His lean manners are really good, he knows some of his basic commands now and, he will be scheduled for his neuter in about two-three weeks time.
So many compliments on what a nice man he is and, how great his coat looks!
He was still worried about any men he saw yet, much better and his reaction is always avoidance. He will overcome that in time.
A good day! 🙂

Your site is wonderful. I just wanted to tell you too, I admire all of the work (work is probably an understatement) you do saving animals.

BHRR’s Torque with his wonderful surprise SS pressies – THANKS Auntie Rachel! – December 14th, 2013

We committed to this puppy(not convinced it is a BMx at all)…GD possibly, a GDx possibly for sure.

The puppy, that we named BHRR’s Torque(THANKS to all for the fabu name suggestions) arrived to BHRR December 14th, 2013. THANKS Rachel for helping to get him to us as we were at PV Stittsville taking some photo’s, from when he arrived to CJ!

Below is a photo of him taken at PV Stittsville(he had to meet Santa!) the day he arrived and, when we got him to BHRR with his surprise SS given to him by Rachel!

What a cutie! 🙂

BHRR - 10-4 (Medium)
Photo from AMB Photography – Great Santa played by Martin. 🙂

I am a bit crushed to write this post….I live with a seizure dog – my PPSS has had idiopathic seizures for over 5 years now, and have owned and been loved by other seizure dogs in my life and we have rescued many over the past, almost 18 years……

I had suspected for awhile that our Dobie Doll was having small seizures and so, delayed putting her up for adoption, talked to her Vets, began to journal….and, then, I thought this last week, that maybe ‘I’ was wrong (she has OCD etc.) and, then two nights ago, BHRR’s Reese had an episode that very much confirmed my worries and I talked to her Vet Team again….bw is normal….and, then just a short time ago, as I was finally getting to bed after another 22 hour day, she had her worse one so far….

Seizure dogs can and do live wonderful lives…and, she can too. I am not worried that any right matched forever loving home could not meet her needs…..she has come so far with communication and social skills and being a dog, that, this is a set back as she withdraws back into herself and is hard to reach… I do not want her to go back to those early days and weeks… She is so confused and scared that she is shutting me out and I cannot ‘reach’ her….

So, at this time, she shall remain in rehab at BHRR and we may have to consider more testing to see of there is a tumour(none was discovered when she first arrived and the specialists were looking into why she was blind and had hearing(that is believed to be from a deep inner ear infection), issues and neuro concerns……is something now showing up?? That they could not find then??

So, my rest which was going to be a most pleasant short one is now filled with questions and worries and concerns…..

For all that have met this absolutely inspirational Bambi Baby, you will agree with me that she is exceptional…..she is miraculous and, more than ever, she needs all of us to continue being there for her and rooting for her…..

As I know more, I shall update…..

I could just cry…..

Deep breath, one step at a time and one test at a time and one decision at a time for her….

May she be ready at another time to be placed up for adoption and that right matched forever loving home finding her and understanding this is another very special thing about BHRR’s Reese and love her…..

This is Julia and BHRR’s Nessie – December 4th, 2013

@ Alcatel-Lucent. Julia raised $627 for BHRR in just two lunch hours!
Here is her website: www.Juliashelpinghand.ca
This is the very amazing young lady(10) that raised over $2,200 for LAWS in 2013 and has chosen our small r/q group to support in 2014 with the selling of her absolutely stunning and creative necklaces and zipper pulls plus key chains.
I had the absolute pleasure of spending the lunch hour with her and her mom, aunt, BHRR’s Nessie and Sean…..
She has plans to do a colouring contest – using our beloved RIP BHRR’s Freddy’s photo, is already scheduled to come be at our 7th ANNUAL KAH/BHRR Microchip/Nail Trim & BBQ Event AND, has asked us to go to her school to do public awareness plus community education!
THANK you Julia! Thank you!

BHRR’s Prince Eggo Belfast has moved to an ADOPTED STATUS!

YAY! YAY! YAY! He will be staying with us through the holidays, and, his SS will be headed with him to his new forever loving home in 2014 as the busy Holiday season is fast approaching and, at their own request.

The approved home had met him several times and even, had a weekend play date with him and it was just meant to be. This amazing home, is dear to us already for a number of reasons and just tickled, beaming and so happy! Their news to share though as to the big reveal…..

As the official adoption will not take place to 2014 and, we are fast coming up to our annual shut down period – this weekend for we do not believe in adopting over the holiday season – he will be our first adoption of 2014!!!

BHRR’s Prince Eggo Belfast October and at Pet Expo – November 10th, 2013

Inspirational moment for this week and, actually month if not more!!

My last PRU FREEDOM Dane remains so patiently waiting for that right matched forever loving home meant for her…..while BHRR’s Gretta waits and all of us that love her too…..she just keeps getting better and better. Many can attest to the incredible journey this beautiful Dane has gone on….

From being carried and standing up to sleep to blossoming to the point of her and her sister, BHRR’s Peanut(wonderfully adopted), taking the ‘newbs’ under their wings and, teaching them in turn what chasing and tag and running in play plus happiness meant.

They will never be ‘norm’ in the way that many would consider normal for a dog; yet, for them, they and all the BHRR FREEDOM dogs, my Sir-Bounce-A-Lots included they are becoming the best dogs they can be under he right supportive guidance and love networks…..

I digress…..

A couple of nights ago, BHRR’s Gretta did a ‘first’ for me…..she actually took wet canned food off a spoon to eat. To many, this may seem like a small thing, to a dog like her that had been so abused and neglected, and, socially plus emotionally stunted….it was huge….and, to me huge….objects that she was nervous off and thought could ‘hurt’ her, are now given her examples of delights and hidden pleasures.

For those that ‘get’ puppymill dogs…..they will ‘get’ what I am mean with how absolutely spectacular of a moment this was for me. AND, you better believe that I was screaming and jumping inside my heart and soul of ‘YES’ and, on the outside, passively ignoring as if this happens every day….

So proud of you BHRR’s Gretta and that right matched home out there for you shall find you and they will ‘get’ how special you are!! Right from you nose to toes to tail!!

Beaming over here for she is consistently doing this for me daily now!!

The Leonberger Standard per the Dog Breed Info Center for those that wish to learn even more! 🙂

Description
This is a very large, muscular working dog. The head is rectangular shaped and deeper than it is broad. Males’ heads are generally larger than females’ heads. The skull is somewhat domed. It has a black mask and a rather long muzzle. The black mask should not extend above the eyebrows; the mask can be up to the eyes or above the eyes, but never over the entire head. The large nose is always black with clearly outlined nostrils. The lips should be black, and are usually tight and dry. In males with a very majestic head, slightly loose flews and sometimes slightly open hooks of eyes are often found. Loose flews collect saliva, so some males might drool slightly. The teeth should meet in a scissors or level bite. The medium-sized ears are triangular in shape, fleshy, hanging flat and close to the head. The tips of the ears are level with corners of the mouth. The neck is muscular and strong with no dewlap. The medium to long, water-resistant, double coat comes in lion-yellow, golden to red, red-brown, sand, cream, pale yellow and any combination of those colors, always with a black mask. All colors may have shorter, medium or long black tips on the outer coat. There may be a small stripe or white patch on the chest and some white hairs on the toes. There is always discussion about the amount of white allowed. FCI standard states “like the palm of a hand,” but it all depends on whose hand you are referring to. The Leonberger’s thick mane creates a lion-like look. The mane in males can take up to 4 years to develop; the mane in a female is less obvious than in a male. Rear dewclaws are sometimes removed. The front and rear legs are feathered. The bushy tail hangs straight down. The pads of the feet are black. They often have webbed feet.

Temperament

The Leonberger has a lively nature. It is brave, intelligent, steady and affectionate. It has a sweet expression. Loving and steadfast, stable and calm, the Leonberger just loves everyone. Its intelligence is extraordinary; its loyalty and love for its family is unparalleled. He has a friendly personality. A well-balanced Leonberger will be highly trustworthy and have incredible patience, even with the most obnoxious children. With most of these dogs, if the situation becomes too intense, instead of showing any aggression, the Leonberger simply walks away. Most of these dogs can take bad behavior in their stride. The Leonberger does not respond very well to harsh training methods; training requires patience. Owners need to be firm, but calm, confident and consistent. Proper human to canine communication is essential. To be an excellent watchdog requires some special training. Often called a gentle giant, the Leonberger is serious, eager and willing to please, responding well to training. The Leonberger can get along with other dogs.  Socialize and train early, as this puppy will become a very large adult. Teach your dog to respect humans by training it not to jump, to heel on the lead and to enter and exit all door and gateways after the humans. The Leonberger is more active and coordinated than many other giant breeds.

Height, Weight

Height: Males 28 – 31 inches (71 – 80 cm) Females 27 – 30 inches (61 – 75 cm)
Weight: Males 118 – 170 pounds (54 – 77 kg) Females 100 – 134 pounds (45 – 61 kg)

Health Problems

As with all giant breeds, they are prone to hip dysplasia and other skeletal diseases/disorders. Also eyelid defects and bone disease. Possible behavioral problems.

Living Conditions

The Leonberger is not recommended for apartment life. It is relatively inactive indoors and will do best with at least a large yard. They prefer cool climates and can live inside or outside, but mostly prefer to be wherever you are.

Exercise

This breed does not need a lot of exercise, however, it does need to be taken on a daily walk. While out on the walk the dog must be made to heel beside or behind the person holding the lead, as in a dog’s mind the leader leads the way, and that leader needs to be the human. They love to be included in all family outings and are very adaptable to most any environment. They LOVE to swim, hike and be trained to pull carts and sleds. If you plan to have your Leo pull carts or hike, one has to wait until the dog is grown. It is not recommended before the dog is about 18 months old.

Life Expectancy

About 8-9 years.

Grooming

Weekly brushing is needed. The ears must be kept clean and the teeth cleaned when needed. Bathe only when necessary. Some de-matting is required to avoid hotspots. Wetness and damp/wet weather conditions are responsible for the hot spots. Check behind ears, feathering on legs and tail for mats. The Leonberger is a seasonally heavy shedder; during this time the dog should be brushed and combed daily.
Origin
This breed was established in 1846 in Leonberg, Germany, in the region of Wurttemberg by the German breeder Heinrich Essing from a crossing of the Newfoundland, St. Bernard, and the Great Pyrenees. Heinrich Essing’s goal was to create a breed that would closely resemble the look of a lion. Leonbergers have been owned by many royal families including Napoleon II of France, Empress Elizabeth of Austria, the Prince of Wales, Emperor Napoleon II, Bismarck and Italian King Umberto. In the nineteenth century many Leonbergers were imported to Russia. Like many breeds, the world wars almost brought it to extinction. By the end of World War II, only a few dogs remained. In 1945, several Germans gathered some of the few remaining Leonbergers and re-established the breed. Today the Leonberger has regained his popularity in Europe. The official standard was set in 1949. The first Leonberger was imported to the United States in 1971. This versatile breed has been successful for guarding livestock, search and rescue, obedience, water rescue, tracking and as a family companion.

For those who would like to learn a bit more about the Leonberger Breed. 🙂

History
The background of the Leonberger is a very clouded one, full of mysteries and turbulent tales. Many things have been written, sometimes accounts contradicted others, and little proof has been given for many of the stories. It was not until the early part of the 20th century that litters were registered and records were kept. The breed was officialy recognized by FCI in 1955.

To start at the beginning, we go back to the early years of the 19th century. In Leonberg, a small rural town 20 km northwest of Stuttgart in Wurttemberg (Germany) Heinrich Essig was born in 1809. He turned out to be a very ambitious man, and he became a very prominent citizen, elected to the town council and possessing a strong talent for marketing and trading.
His greatest passion was for all kinds of animals and his house (Schweizerhaus) was more like a private little zoo, with all kinds of dogs, foxes, turkeys, peacocks and so on.

This account was written of Essig’s creation of the Leonberger : “Amongst his dogs there was a black and white Newfoundland female (Landseer type). He crossed her with a longhaired Barry-dog (St. Bernard) he owned also. He crossed them for 4 generations, out crossed again with a Pyrenean Wolfhound (Pyrenean Mountain Dog) crossed again with a St. Bernard”. There is, however, no proof that this is in fact what was done and that there were no other dogs involved.
Essig started breeding in 1846, which is the date we now attribute to be the birth of the Leonberger.

In an article in the “Illustrierte Zeitung”, dated November 1865, there is mention that Essig had 17 years of breeding experience. In another paper (Illustrierte Handwerkers Zeitung Nummer 10 Jahrgang 1870) Th. Hering writes a story of a dog breeder in Leonberg (Essig) where Essig claimed that he had been breeding dogs for about 20-24 years. In the same article, the dogs mentioned are Leonberger or Gotthard dog and a picture was published to show to readers what they looked like.
Large impressive dogs were very much in demand and there were years that Essig exported more than 300 dogs. The St. Bernard was very much in favor, but had become very rare. In fact, after a catastrophe in 1855, there was only one couple left at the St. Bernard pass. These dogs were crossed with Newfoundland females from Stuttgart, other local dogs, and English breeders crossed them with Mastiffs to obtain a more powerful head.

So, it is quite logic that sometimes Leonbergers were announced as a new breed with the old St. Bernard blood. We see pictures of what appear to be Leonbergers under the names Berghund, Alpine Mastiff, St. Bernard, Leonhardiner and so on. However, to add more confusion, sometimes St. Bernards were presented with these same names. By the way, according to records by the Monastery at the St.Bernard pass it seems that the name St. Bernard was used for the first time at the Show in Birmingham in 1862. As member of the town-council Essig was not only able to promote the town of Leonberg but could also do a lot of marketing for his dogs. By donating Leonbergers to royalty and other celebrities like Garibaldi, the Prince of Wales, King Umberto of Italy, The Czar of Russia, and Empress Elisabeth of Austria, he became very well known and he could easily sell more of his dogs. At one time, Empress Elisabeth possessed 7 Leonbergers.

It was quite normal that a successful businessman was imitated. Since a written standard did not exist, and therefore one could call every dog a Leonberger, many more breeders or dog merchants went into business. A wellknown trader in Leonberg was Mr. Burger;  Mr. Bergmann from Waldheim, promoted his Caesar in papers and magazines, and Mr. Otto Friedrich, from Zahna, publicized his Berghund Moulon.
As sales of Leonbergers flourished, the official cynologists tried to ban these breeders from shows because they believed it was unethical to produce dogs only for the money.

Today we know that there must be more dogs involved than the ones with which Essig claims he started the breed. Modern genetics tells us that is impossible to create the Leonberger from the 3 breeds as described. In old photos we see black and white dogs, black dogs, red or yellow colored dogs–all said to be Leonbergers.

Later a relative,  the nephew Christian Essig, took over the kennel.
Essig died in 1887.
It was in the early 1880’s that some breeding rules were written by Kull (a painter from Stuttgart) and a Mr. Boppel from Cannstatt. He was a judge and also a breeder of St. Bernard.
It was after Essig and Burger in Leonberg died that the first Leonberger Clubs were founded.
The Leonberger Klub Berlin began in 1891 and Klub fur Leonberger, Heilbronn in1895. These two clubs probably did not exist for very long, because in 1895 the “Internationaler Klub fur Leonberger Hunde Stuttgart” was founded

On December 11th,  2013, I received the following email on an 11.4 KGs puppy thought to be a BM/GDx:(Photo will not upload)

“Hi Gwen,

Hope all is well.

I have 2 of these little pups.  I have offered one to X (still waiting to hear back) as I know everywhere is full or stopping intake.  Also I do know that you are pretty much full…but thought I would ask if one would interest you.

The pup will be vaccinated only.  Also will come in on transport Friday during the day.

No issue puppy.

The shelter does not feel that they have the right clientele for these babies.  Attracting the wrong people.

Anyways, let me know if you are interested…

Thanks again,”

WE HOPE TO SEE YOU THERE!

This is not a community education or public awareness event YET, I plan on showing up with some of the BHRR doggies to hang and visit AND thank ALL that show up!

NOTE: THERE shall also be $10 NAIL Trims with all proceeds coming to BHRR!

My last post for tonight(my night!) is to be very leery of mats in crates that can have threads pull….
BHRR’s Cancun AKA Mr. Mexico had a lovely cushy mat in his crate and has never chewed or destroyed anything and last night, somehow a thread pulled and wrap itself around one of his toes.
He likes to lay in his crate, especially when the BHRR Purse Puppies are out and I noticed him laying in a position not normal for him – a bit awkward ….I took his collar, encouraged him to come out and he had threads wrapped around one of his toes and his foot was swollen. The rest of his mat was not out of place other than some thread pieces that I noted.
Between Sean & I, we got everything off and nothing is broken and per the Vet, we are in a wait and see pattern to know if he may lose that toe or more. He is on Deramaxx right now and not weight bearing on that back foot.
He had the circulation cut off for a period of time – was not long – yet, long enough to cause a problem.
AND, we have used cushy mats like this in crates for years yet, no longer…….
Please keep him in your thoughts…. 🙁

“As proud owners of rescue dogs ourselves, we organized a fund raiser that would help support a great organizations as yours that works so hard at helping such deserving animals.”

Introducing: The BHRR Purse Puppies!  They arrived finally to BHRR on Monday December 2nd, 2013. They are very tiny, quite stunted. They are four out of a litter of 12 that were not receiving the proper nutrition and care. When I got them both of these puppies were around 5 pounds and that was at 7 weeks of age.

PuppiesDece62013VIDEO

They are two of four very special needs Lab Ret(Mom) x GS(Dad) that were able to be saved so beautifully by PVAR! They originally went out to assess what they thought was one blind pup and it turned out to be four – they were about 4 weeks of age then.
BHRR was then contacted right after the visit, to see if we could possibly step up to assist two of these amazing puppies and all of us hoped and dreamed and was sooooooooo over the moon when Mom was surrendered too!

We have been graced with a wee girl & a wee boy! 🙂
The wee girl – is blind – the worst of the four puppies
The wee boy – is quite visually impaired and has bowed legs

PVAR has the other two babies – two wee girls’ in their excellent care plus the mom!
R/Q groups working together to help effect a more positive difference to animals in need!
This is why I continue to do what I do, almost 26 years later. 🙂 It is about the animals and the people behind helping those animals in these r/q groups that make it so rewarding! 🙂
Thank you Poet’s Vision Aussie Rescue for entrusting them to us! Privileged as always, we are at BHRR!

UPDATE: He is settling in well yet, is extremely fearful of Sean and Mason. 🙁
We will resolve that through time. He will learn that they are big spoiling teddy bears.

UPDATE: BHRR’s Aslan is safe at BHRR and BHRR is now officially closed for intake until further notice. Thank you to all involved helping to get him to BHRR! Jenn thank you for the Xmas tug toys for the doggies and the collar for him!

Our foster homes are full, we are full and even though we have two dogs under a pending adoption at this time and, one more dog to possibly go under a pending adoption plus the very sad loss of HQD in the not too distance future; we will remain closed for intake.

We will advise when we are taking in new additions!

So many in need yet, we need to remain committed in quality and standard of care to all that we currently have under our authority. We continue to network and save and transport animals for other r/q groups. The latest being a wonderful Dogo(actually a Boxerx that we saved and then transported to a rescue with room last night).

Thanks – VIDEO below……..

BHRR’s Nessie has moved to our BHRR Haven Program for the time being.

She has some intermittent swelling happening on and off on one of her back legs and what originally thought was to be an infection to be resolved with antibiotics does not seem to be the case.

More testing and exams will be done.

She is one of 18 Irish Wolfhounds that BHRR has assisted over the last year, 17 were purebreds and 1 mix, BHRR’s Goliath.

BHRR has been rescuing, training and owning Irish Wolfhounds for almost 26 years now. We are the oldest established r/q group out there in our area that has been doing so. Sadly, this is a breed that we are starting to see some serious exploitation with, so please do EMAIL us, if you know of a Wolfie in need. Like all breeds, they are not meant for just anyone.

We are waiting for a re-exam with Dr. Philibert. He has a fractured right hip, two blown cruciates, bilateral Hip Dysplasia and bilateral elbow Dysplasia. He does not qualify to be able to do hydrotherapy and so, we have been doing acupuncture and canine massage. We are scheduling some cold laser treatments too.

We took 18 x-rays on October 16th, 2013 of hips, elbows, spine, knees etc. Below are two of his x-rays.

He is such a lovely boy. Playful, affectionate and now that he is on the Tramadol and Gabapentin(400 mg TID), he is even more happy and and playful.

Quality of life for him. He runs and zips as can be seen in the Winter Wonderland Video posted and as he does not qualify as a surgical candidate for those hips(DP thought he may be able to improve the quality of his life by fixing the right cruciate yet, will re-evaluate that in another appointment).

Kanata Animal Hospital (613) 836-2848 and they will take Visa, M/C and AMEX over the phone under the account of ‘Birch Haven Rescue’ for ‘Breen’. They will take Debit or Cash in person at 440 Hazeldean Road in Kanata, Ontario

BHRR’s Prince Eggo Belfast is now under a PENDING ADOPTION!

We will update his blog as we can!

Here is his REALITY Slide.

He is the 18th, Irish Wolfhound that BHRR has assisted over the last year, 17 were purebreds and 1 mix, BHRR’s Goliath.

Belfastreality

BHRR's Prince Eggo Belfast is NOW AVAILABLE FOR ADOPTION!

WTG! He is a 5 year old IW(5 in August).

He is a bomb proof boy…he rocked the Pet Expo in November, the 10th and, not a dog, person that he did not get along with! He even loved the pot belly pig(gosh! Her name eludes me) and, loved plodding behind her! 🙂 He is a bomb proof boy.

He is housebroken, he is 100% trustworthy in the home, great in the car and has a LONG way with those seasonal allergies and food allergies.

He is down to 50 mgs of Pred EOD(Every other day) and is eating FROMM Salmon. He will eat the Whitefish yet, can be more picky. He has some wet mixed in of appropriate wet.

For a dog that had been fed human garbage, it was a bit of a struggle to get him to finally eat yet, we are there!

He can go to a home that works ft, pt, semi-retired, retired, works from home etc.

He can be the only dog in the home or with another like-minded dog. He should not be in a home with younger dogs – he is playful in his own way yet, is past all the puppy antics. I would love to see him in a home whereby there is another dog that shall continue to teach him to be a 'dog' and emerge more and more into the great dog he really is inside and coming out bit by bit!

He has great leash manners and you just have to ensure that 'he knows that you know that he knows he has manners' 😉

He knows sit and down and give a paw and give the other paw and turn around and stay and so much more! 🙂 Just a gem!|

BHRR's Belfast – November 10th, 2013

BHRR’s Treasure is NOW AVAILABLE FOR ADOPTION!

He came to the PV Stittsville ‘THANKS FOR GIVING’ Event on October 12th and what a hoot! LOL Not a person or dog or creature he did not love on!

His nickname is not ‘trouble’ for nothing! 😉 He had no issues with the cats there yet, THAT is no guarantee that he is or is not going to be good with them moving forward. Integration is very important.

He will go to an experienced dog home only. He is good to go to a home that works ft, pt, from home and any home that adopts him must understand the important of positive reinforcement and patience, consistency.

He is a love bug yet, lots of energy and personality and style! There is not one mean bone in this dog’s body. He is the life of any party when he wants to be and a real house gem when needed….for the most part. He has come so far and just is going to make that right matched family, the best of additions. Older children – no less than 10 will be considered, should a home have kids.

Great in the car, crate trained, house broken and eyes that just are gorgeous!

He would do best in a home with another like minded dog.

AND, all that are considering this boy NEED to be aware that he has bad hips…..if he lays down on any smooth hardwood or slippery floors, he has a hard time getting his feet under him. He can almost ‘pull’ himself to a rug or more rough surface to be able to stand without slipping. We believe in full disclosure at BHRR.

The cold weather is going to be harder on him and, as he ages. He is on Glucosomine plus Chondroitin, and raw/eggs shells.

Yet, he runs and plays and roughhouses and, we believe in quality of life. I also give him some Deramaxx as needed. 100 mg’s SID

BHRR’s Treasue – November 2013

Justin Hirsch

Hi Gwen,

I recently sent you a PayPal donation of $100.00 towards the virtual fostering of an animal for six months.

This donation is on behalf of Kayla DeSousa, a former colleague of yours a Kanata Animal Hospital.

The work you do and support you provide to the community are amazing. Special people like you are who make this place so nice to live. Your passion and commitment to bettering the animal community impacts so many lives and is really an inspiration.

Thank you so much, Gwen. I hope this donation can help you change even more lives.

NOTICE:

BHRR does not adopt out during the XMAS season due to our position that it is not in the best interest of any new addition being added during such a busy, exciting and somewhat stressful time for many.

Quite a few other Rescues, Shelters, Pounds etc. have also begun to follow a similar protocol to what we have been doing for so many years.

Our XMAS Shutdown period for this year is from Saturday December 14th, 2013 to Tuesday January 7th 2013 inclusive.

During this time, BHRR is available 24/7 as always for requests for assistance of animals in need.

Thank you for your continued understanding – The BHRR Team

Our 6th ANNUAL 'JUST IN TIME FOR XMAS' Online Auction HAS started! 🙂 We NOW have 87 items posted – LINK BELOW – and more to come daily! This is not a facebook auction. As we have supporters not on fb, we use a wp plug-in app on our home website.

YOU have to go visit daily to see just what is there! 🙂 THANKS to all that have donated so kindly, generously and the animals thank you too! 🙂

The BHRR Auction began at 7:00 AM EST on Saturday November 23rd, 2013.

The BHRR Auction will end at 9:00 PM EST on Thursday December 5th, 2013

http://www.birchhaven.org/fundraising-2008/online-auction-2012

This is an extremely special quilt approximately 4 x 3 made by a very talented and giving plus generous woman – Debi Crozier.
HERE is the story…..
It was made by Debi for what she called a ‘most deserving doggie’ @ Birch Haven Rescue and Rehabilitation Services(BHRR) or to do with whatever was felt to be best, and we discussed whether to place it up for auction in our last planned Fundraiser of 2013, our 6th ANNUAL ‘JUST IN TIME FOR XMAS’ Online Auction. She never made mention of a name of a specific BHRR doggie to give this beautiful item too, yet, great minds ended up thinking alike!
When it was learned that HQD’s Cancer was progressing quickly now, I asked if Debi may be ok that we did end up keeping it to give to HQD, Debi told me that was what she was hoping we would do yet, did not say a thing.
Debi, THANK you! HQD thanks you too! It is stunning and your support of HQD and of BHRR is as special as you!!!
HQD is all snuggled up and comfy cozy in front of one of the fireplaces….. 🙂
