The Home-visit for BHRR's Cancun's possible adoption is on Friday November 7th. We will continue to post updates on his blog as we can. 🙂

BHRR's Cancun has an exciting announcement! He is NOT only wishing everyone a safe and happy Halloween BUT, he is moving under a PENDING ADOPTION!
Please think of him and, I want to thank Ottawa Dog Rescue for the referral to BHRR for this possible saint adoption.
We will update his blog as we can with the status of his application!

Please consider going to the Helping Ottawa Fur Kids Facebook Page and, 'liking' our photo and, then putting in the comment section 'this amazing rescue gets my vote!' Contest ENDS Wednesday October 22nd at NOON and, each of the 6 rescues participating will receive a monetary donation, based upon where they rank upon the close of the contest. THANKS in advance for your consideration!

NOTE:

From Monday October 20th to Monday November 3rd, 2014 inclusive, BHRR will not be open for adoptions or the intake of adoption applications.

We do not adopt out around the Halloween season and many others Rescues, shelters, pounds etc. have also begun to follow a similar protocol.

We do not believe it is in the best interest of the animals in our program, especially for dark coloured dogs.

During this time, BHRR is available 24/7 as always for requests for assistance of animals in need.

BHRR shall be attending our THIRD of ONLY four community education & public awareness events for this year, on October 4th & October 5th! The last community education/public awareness event that we attended was in May!

FINAL (Medium)

Two BHRR Saints – Does anyone know WHO they are?!
BHRR's Cancun(Left) & BHRR's Lily Belle(right)
One(on the right) was adopted in December of 2011 AND the other(on the left) is currently at BHRR waiting for that right matched home to find them.
They are both a wee bit wet in this photo as BHRR's Cancun had his special picnic date today and, the home took them to Britannia to swim!
BHRR's Cancun had a GREAT time! The home commented on how impeccable his leash manners were, how great he traveled in a car, how obedient, social(gosh, he loves people!) and, mindful of his manners and just so affectionate he was! The home said how much more they fell in love with him and, he is such a love! He is STILL AVAILABLE FOR ADOPTION and, his home ran into a few folks, that were asking about him and, they are going to take him for some more play dates as they are one of our approved adoptive/volunteer homes.
This was the first time I had seen BHRR`s Lily Belle(the home has not managed to get to one of our GD & GIANT AT HEART Walks/hikes as of yet) and, she was sooooooooooo excited to see me! I was a bit excited to see her also. 😉

GENTLE REMINDER & UPDATEThis event will NOW also be used to also help BHRR’s Porridge – Rushed into KAH March 19th for when I returned from being out of the country, he was not well. He had dropped 3 KGs(6.6 pounds) – he is down to 74 KGs, had a nasal discharge, flared nostrils, no temp yet, belly breathing and could not breathe with his mouth closed, had not drank anything in over 24 hours, minimal eating, lethargic, swollen lymph nodes and, could not rest on his side(his fav resting spot).

PORRIDGE VET RESULTS TO DATE: Full exam done, lungs sounded ok, did a full blood work up including a heart blood test(awaiting results, we could not use Dormitor(if he did have a heart condition, this would be not in his best interest) to sedate for x-rays and the Torb barely took his anxiety edge off(we were not able to do his nails as he needs the Dorm also to sedate him) and, we could only get the right lat for x-rays yet, the heart on that side look almost completely normal. There was no noticeable bulge or significant enlargement yet, we had to take four shots to get his full chest and lungs just of the one side and the left side could not be completed at this time. We took biopsies of his lymph nodes, heart rate was elevated. The staff there noted how poor his energy level was from his norm ‘must maim with my happy tail and enthusiasm hyper harle happy boy ‘tude’ and while, he did eat some wet canned food, he had a hard time trying to eat anything dry and could only take one dry piece of T/D that was offered to him. The Vet has prescribed Doxy for him 4 tabs BID of the 100 mg IN case it may be infection related yet, he would not be presented ‘classically’ if that were the case. Yet, we are being proactive from all angles.

He went down hill so fast while I was away and, I thank all for monitoring him and I have trusted and do trust that those that were here, did keep his best interest at heart and, did not see fit to bring him in. I was completely ok for hi to go in for peace of mind and, I had been told that he was eating and drinking well and energy level was ok, no nasal discharge and lungs were clear(one person here is a nurse). In discussing him in more depth tonight with some of the wonderful souls that were here, it was noted that a weight loss had been seen, that drinking levels had gone down and energy level had changed. He was apparently fine and completely normal up to late last week and, I arrived home on Tuesday early afternoon. Whatever he has, it is aggressive….. 🙁

AND, in the 24+ hours that I have been home, his condition from there worsened further and, I jumped in bringing him in ASAP. Even called KAH to change his appointment to an earlier time slot.

Possible diagnosis at this time range from early heart to early lymphoma to early nasal tumor. Good case scenario, an infection of some sort.

AND, here is the PV Stittsville, Nail Trim Event Poster! $15 for grinds/$10 for Trims on Saturday March 22nd from 10 am – 5 pm, and, all money shall benefit BHRR’s Coach, our ‘heart’ boy!

Purse Puppy Coach shall be coming with me after my work shift on March 22nd,  – around 2:30 PM to visit and thank all those that will be there AND, he will be doing ‘KUDDLES 4 KASH’ to also help raise some money for his bills. AND, for those that have had the pleasure of hugging this boy, he is DELIGHTFUL! I may also bring BHRR’s Angel Noelle or perhaps BHRR’s Torque! 🙂

On Tuesday March 4th, BHRR’s Purse Puppy’s Coach weight was 14.9 KGs(37.78 pounds)! Since his arrival into Rescue, he has put on 34.28 pounds! 🙂 In just 14 weeks! 🙂

I have a huge blog post to make from this Vet visit and then coming back the next day for emergency x-rays and an ECG (the results were suppose to be back within 24 hours….) and, from there, the next steps for him. I have the report from the one Vet to post and, I have passed along all information and details to PVAR who have the other two puppies and who adopted the mom. At the minimum, it is believed that he has a congenital condition. 🙁 AND, the chances that HE is the only one in that large litter to have this condition is slim to none.

As I am heading offline for the next week+, blog updates will be to a minimum to none – SORRY! 🙁 I am going out of the country and later this year, also plan on going back out of the country as I have been invited to Costa Rica and Nicarauga to assist/train/mentor in a spay/neuter clinic and, to work with the strays etc. over there.  So, I will post as I can and, thanks to all that follow the blogs!!! 🙂

Now, we just have to have those right matched forever loving homes find all of these great BHRR doggies that are AVAILABLE FOR ADOPTION! 🙂

We are hoping that this Fundraiser shall be successful! We are so happy to be showing our own hearts in turn to the store that is making this all possible and to buy all the food we can with the monies that come in. THANK YOU to the village that is surrounding BHRR and, PV Stittsville!!

Since December 22nd, 2013, Sean & I have been working to renovate our Sunroom. It was time. Though, we have re-painted it twice since we moved in, the tiles that we put in back in 2000 were worn and the room needed a  ‘face lift’ in many ways.

Yet, it is very difficult doing renovations with animals and kids, especially when we installed radiant floor heating and we put it on and, the dogs took over in this cold! LOL

Below is a photo of them enjoying the new tile we laid(porcelain) with the radiant floor heating on. It has been so cold, that, even the Wolfies and Saints and Newfs are loving the floor! Makes it a bit hard to work around them to prime and paint and tile and, install a new door and a new fan and…and…and! I will be glad when it is is all done. IT has been a process. 😀

Those long legs on the right side are BHRR’s Maverick’s! He is back on January 31st for his latest x-rays to be sent off to Dr. Philibert to review.

BHRR’s Angel Noelle’s ‘BREAKING BILLS BAKE’ Online Auction Fundraiser
*Items do not need to be baked until the Online Auction is over. 🙂
ONLINE AUCTION: STARTS January 18th, 2014(7 AM EST) & ENDS January 23rd, 2014(9 PM EST) – We have 32 items to date!

Thank you to EACH person who has stepped up to help us with sharing this request for donations for this fundraiser, offering to make an item, sending those very precious notes of support and kindness AND, in believing in this very special ‘angel’! As always, thank you! Thank you! THANK YOU! What a brutal start to 2014, we have had at BHRR. 🙁 With being in a food crisis, BHRR’s Angel Noelle’s amputation and, BHRR’s Blooms’ gas bloat. 🙁

All monies raised in this Online Auction shall go towards paying for BHRR’s Angel Noelle’s Bills.

This sweet Rottiex puppy used to live in a crackhouse. She lived a life of constant abuse and, at 12 weeks of age, she was abused, picked up and thrown. Her leg/elbow was broken and left untreated for another 12 weeks. She received no medical treatment during this time as my leg worked to try and heal on its own. I was terrifed and in extreme pain.

On Christmas Eve, an ‘angel’ contacted Gwen and, asked if Birch Haven Rescue & Rehabiltition(BHRR) could assist. BHRR immediately stepped up and another ‘angel’ came to her rescue and took her from this very bad place as ‘because I whimpered in pain’, the Owners wanted me gone ASAP and would have killed me if I had stayed with them.

On Monday January 13th, 2014, her leg was amputated and her bills will be close to $5,000 once all of her rehab is finished. She still has to have post-off follow-ups/exams, vaccines, physiotherapy etc.

Here is a copy of a post that I made on our Birch Haven Facebook Page. For those that are inquiring as to ‘where’ the page went.

As we have many followers that are not on facebook, this is a post that can be ignored. 🙂 For those that do follow us on facebook and, missed this post, here is a copy….

This is the final post as part of the ‘end of year statement’ for the BHRR BOD….that absolute privilege has fallen upon my typing fingers…

So much to say, a Gwennie Novel that would be a Gwennie chapter to truly capture it all!!

It has been an incredible year for BHRR, 13 WOW adoptions, so many faces put to names of lovely folks near and far, friendships plus relationships that have strengthened further and increased those links on that BHRR CHAIN OF SUCCESS, new kind and beautiful faces that have chosen our cause to support and believe in, the miracles of so many that were considered by several to be ‘lost causes’, r/q rescues working side by side making an much bigger positive difference to animals out there in need, the laughs, the smiles, the fun(Yes, r/q rescue can be fun!), the public education and community education events, play dates and play visits, the fundraisers(the crossposting!) the walks/hikes, the animals plus people that have touched us to the core and made our hearts just burst in warmth and happiness, the donations of lifesaving food and, other material items, the financial hand to help pay for much needed bills and more dog food, the driving and the more driving and the more driving, and yes, the hugs!
We thank each you that has been there and we look forward to what we hope promises to be an even better year for all ahead. We are NOTHING without you…..AND, to my BHRR BOD, thank you!

It has been such a hard year in others ways, and we take those important life lessons learned and will work that much more diligently in making better decisions/choices in 2014 and onward….we are focused in letting go of the things that we cannot change and that are unhealthy in the name of r/q rescuing.
We endeavour to practise what we preach, research, stay updated and keep walking the talk!
We have cried and still do cry over those that shall no longer be with us – human and animal and, candles are lit in the most honourable plus respectful silence of those that we can no longer physically touch and talk to and embrace……We miss you and, we are better in the having been touched by you…..

We thank all those that have assisted us in not changing BHRR yet, in continuing to help make it a better version of itself! I stand up and applaud each of you and then, I kneel down in the most humblest of thanks in turn, for I appreciate each and every gesture from a dollar to an encouraging word to helping to do nails or helping me to keep making dogs more well balanced and set-up for success! You may not think you have done much, yet, you have…especially on those dark trench days….

2014 MARKS year #18 for our small r/q Rescue and, that moves me into an announcement that I have been slowly sharing with people over the past few months….

The BHRR BOD has been discussing this for close to a 1 year now….

As of 11:59 PM on Wednesday January 1st, 2014; we shall be unpublishing our page….and, deactivating the BHRR BOD account.

This was not an easy step to take by any means for we understand how key networking and social media is….this page has brought us soooooooooooo much goodness and kindness and, we go into this knowing that we shall find ourselves most likely struggling even more financially and with food needs than we ever have had to date…..13 dogs were adopted in 2013, 17 in 2012 and this page is to be credited with these success stories…..

We are a small group and like many groups, we are Volunteers and lead busy lives outside of r/q rescue and, in frequent discussions with members of the BHRR BOD, the bandwidth is just not there right now for me to keep up the pace of this page plus what so many have originally been attracted plus loved about BHRR, the detailed blogs…that is very much a ‘signature’ BHRR arena and, it has had to take a backseat more often than I would have liked in 2013.

2014, is also year of much excitement(and some stress!) in my own professional and personal life – I will be defending in 2014 in re: to my PhD that I have worked pt on for too many years now…, I am furthering my training to do more work internationally with strays, street dogs and spay/neuter clinics and teaching and being mentored….I have been invited to Costa Rica and Nicaragua and, I will also begin to shadow at other Hospitals to increase my own skill set and education with qualifications plus experience. AND, I also look forward to my time at the ES when I can get there. As a result, I shall also be deleting/deactivating my personal account. Barry, Catalina and Mary will remain our eyes and ears out there in fb land.

My priority has always been to the animals under our authority and being hands on and keeping our success rates unparalled out there….that, shall not change.

It is my sincerest of wishes that by this time next year, we can publish this page again….it has become such a staple to my day and, I look forward to coming back to post of daily tips and questions and quotes and all things BHRR plus beyond to help other groups also network their own events/animals and throw our support into their corner!

I have sincerely enjoyed sharing the ups and the downs as part of our commitment to full disclosure and that, we are only perfect in our imperfections as humans….

So, it is will deepest regret that this shall be my last post on this page for some time……..

The BHRR BOD is still trying to figure out how best put forth our requests for assistance and right now, we shall go back to using the website for postings…so, please do visit uswww.birchhaven.org for YOU are the real hearts and souls of BHRR, along with the animals…..

May love, happiness and health find their way and stay with you and yours in 2014….that is my wish for you!

Raising my glass to all of you in a toast of my heart to you!

BHRR’s Bishop and Mr. Mexico AKA BHRR’s Cancun had their annuals today!

Sir Bishop weighed a lovely almost 127 pounds!
Mr. Mexico weighed just under 135 pounds….looking good, yet, with the cooler weather, he is more active and has lost about 5-7, so, we had been upping his food doling and doing well!
Both received THUMBS up at their Vet exams AND, both are still patiently waiting for their right matched forever loving homes to find them!
BHRR’s Bishop even had a mani/pedi from the lovelies at KAH today.
They hope that Santa will be good to them for being so awesome today at KAH and from what I have seen….their SS’s have spoiled them like the amazing dogs they are!!!
My Christmas wish for them is that Santa may help their forever loving homes find their way these two really incredible dogs!!!
Until then, they live like kings with us……….
AND Mr. Mexico was quite the ham with his vet today…from releasing his anal glands to rolling over and getting tons of belly rubs! His Vet marveled at how soft and great his coat looked – even minus some of his back and tail feathers from an encounter with a burr bush recently………

UPDATE: Foot is still swollen and though, Mr. Mexico was not interested in breakfast or any food throughout the day, he ate some supper, is taking his meds and his is not as quiet….
Keep those blessings coming….the first 24, 48 and 72 hours will be the most telling per his Vet.

FROM myself, words truly do fail me with how beautiful these cards are plus the stamps AND Anna’s heart…..Thank you! THANK YOU!

From Anna G-h:

“We are delighted to announce that we have note-cards and matching stamps (domestic permanent) available with all funds donated to Birch Haven to assist in vetting and food costs. Each are 4 for $5. WE HOPE TO SEE YOU THERE!

NOTE: THERE shall also be $10 NAIL Trims with all proceeds coming to BHRR!

santa paws (Medium)

My last post for tonight(my night!) is to be very leery of mats in crates that can have threads pull….
BHRR’s Cancun AKA Mr. Mexico had a lovely cushy mat in his crate and has never chewed or destroyed anything and last night, somehow a thread pulled and wrap itself around one of his toes.
He likes to lay in his crate, especially when the BHRR Purse Puppies are out and I noticed him laying in a position not normal for him – a bit awkward ….I took his collar, encouraged him to come out and he had threads wrapped around one of his toes and his foot was swollen. The rest of his mat was not out of place other than some thread pieces that I noted.
Between Sean & I, we got everything off and nothing is broken and per the Vet, we are in a wait and see pattern to know if he may lose that toe or more. He is on Deramaxx right now and not weight bearing on that back foot.
He had the circulation cut off for a period of time – was not long – yet, long enough to cause a problem.
AND, we have used cushy mats like this in crates for years yet, no longer…….
Please keep him in your thoughts…. 🙁

NOTICE:

BHRR does not adopt out during the XMAS season due to our position that it is not in the best interest of any new addition being added during such a busy, exciting and somewhat stressful time for many.

Quite a few other Rescues, Shelters, Pounds etc. have also begun to follow a similar protocol to what we have been doing for so many years.

Our XMAS Shutdown period for this year is from Saturday December 14th, 2013 to Tuesday January 7th 2013 inclusive.

During this time, BHRR is available 24/7 as always for requests for assistance of animals in need.

Thank you for your continued understanding – The BHRR Team

Our 6th ANNUAL 'JUST IN TIME FOR XMAS' Online Auction HAS started! 🙂 We NOW have 87 items posted – LINK BELOW – and more to come daily! This is not a facebook auction. As we have supporters not on fb, we use a wp plug-in app on our home website.

YOU have to go visit daily to see just what is there! 🙂 THANKS to all that have donated so kindly, generously and the animals thank you too! 🙂

The BHRR Auction began at 7:00 AM EST on Saturday November 23rd, 2013.

The BHRR Auction will end at 9:00 PM EST on Thursday December 5th, 2013

http://www.birchhaven.org/fundraising-2008/online-auction-2012

From Friday October 18th to Sunday November 3rd, 2013 inclusive, BHRR will not be open for adoptions or the intake of adoption applications.

A short time ago, I received an email from the most talented and I want to say also, very beautiful and special Liz Bradley of The Ottawa Dog Blog.

http://ottawadogblog.ca/2013/08/we-won-the-top-most-influential-dog-blog-online/

As many are aware, there was a voting contest recently for the Most Influential Dog Blog online and the competition was quite tough AND, thanks to such an incredible surrounding community The Ottawa Dog Blog WON! By taking 60% of the votes!

HUGE Congratulations Liz & Jane!!! Extremely well deserved! Your blog is quite important and valued deeply by so many and you make a BIG difference daily with all your efforts! I have loved watching your amazing 'baby' grow plus develop!

AND, what so humbly surprised me(AND, made me grab yet, another tissue…this time with a welling up of good tears!), was that Liz/Jane was awarded a lifesaving generous gift of $500 donation to the charity of her choice AND they chose BHRR!! As they have posted about, there are SO many great r/q Rescues deserving and in need and, I am touched, humbled and feel privileged to have our small rescue chosen to be the recipient of such an incredible gesture……Just honoured! Immensely!

There really needs to be more words to express THANK YOU! I am MORE thank thankful! I am genuinely appreciative plus grateful and filled with intense gratitude…….

THE BELOW IS FROM LIZ/JANE:

"It was a difficult decision as to the charity who we would pick to receive the donation as all of the Ottawa charities work so hard.

We decided on Birch Haven Rescue and Rehabilitation to receive the $500 donation! BHRR is an amazing rescue who is in need of money to feed the large and giant breeds they rescue – this money will go a long way towards food and vet bills for them!

Thank you again to all who voted. I am so very proud to live in this great city surrounded by fellow dog lovers.

With love and belly rubs,
Liz (and Jane)"

**Could I please ask our fans/supporters/family/friends to take a moment and go over and CONGRATULATE Liz/Jane immensely and tell them HOW uber awesome they are with what they do daily!!!**

AND, here is what I wrote on their lovely Blog post!

HUGE Congratulations Liz & Jane!!! Extremely well deserved! Your blog is quite important and valued deeply by so many and you make a BIG difference daily with all your efforts! I have loved watching your amazing ‘baby’ grow plus develop!

As Liz/Jane have posted, there are SO many great r/q Rescues deserving and in need and, I am touched, humbled and feel immensely privileged to have had our small rescue of Birch Haven Rescue & Rehabilitation Services chosen to be the recipient of such an incredible gesture……Just honoured! THIS is my latest NOT GOOD WITH CATS UPDATE post!

This lovely Canine has proven to be 'NOT good' with cats.

We cat test our dogs as we can. Sean is allergic to cats and most of our own dogs are scared of cats and yet, doing thorough evaluations plus assessments and getting to know the BHRR dogs thoroughly, my knowledge of them and experience with them and gut/instinct have gone a long way in helping to determine if we should even try a cat test.

BHRR's Cancun had a good sleep over play date experience from my understanding and thank you to the home for giving him this special time. As I keep saying experiences like this continue to make the BHRR dogs that much more well rounded plus balanced. As so many know, I keep working to make dogs assets to home and community and to be the best dogs they can be!

BHRR's Cancun and I did not get to go to our 3:30 PM special event yesterday yet, we are rescheduling and after I picked him up after my work shift; he and I stopped by one of our absolutely most fav places in the world! PV Stittsville…many others are finding this to be their fav place too based upon our own amazing experiences! LOVE it!

I was able to confirm WITHOUT a doubt that BHRR's Cancun should not go to a home with cats. I had strong suspicions and feelings regarding this as I have come to know him very well, and, the answer is no….he will not go to any home with cats.

Below is a photos that one of the lovelies at PV Stittsville took of him. LOVE it!

HE was very popular in our recent BHRR DATE ONLINE Auction and I look forward to making the winner bidders their personalized picnic! 🙂

BHRR's Cancun has his own very important announcement to make…

He says that while once he was barely 77 pounds and very sick…he is now 57.9 KGs aka 127.4 POUNDS as of today! 🙂 WAHOOO!

THAT means he has put on 50.4 pounds!!!!!!!!! WTG! Thumbs up! 🙂

AND, he has made me extremely proud of his trust in me and his rehab with respect to being scared of other dogs as NOW that is very much a thing of his past…….especially the wee doggies…they terrified him! 😉

He had a play date today for about 4.5 hours and he shall be having a sleepover playdate at this same home next Friday!

All of this dates only make our BHRR dogs that much more balanced and well rounded…I keep saying that! 🙂

I am sooooooooo proud of this boy! So very proud!!! 🙂

BHRR's Cancun is NOW AVAILABLE FOR ADOPTION! HE DID IT!! YAY!

While he would do great in a home without any other dogs, I would like for him to go to a home with at least one other right mtached personality fit dog. This boy came to us TERRIFIED of other dogs and the poof is in the photos and videos of him that he is NO longer that dog. It has been a long journey to get him to this point and we shall only see him continue to be set-up for success.

HERE IS a WINTER WONDERFUL BHRR VIDEO of him from February 27th, 2013

If he does not have regular exposure to a social stable network of dogs, I worry that he may resort back to the boy that would arch up like a cat and try to skuttle away from all dogs in nervousness and then if pushed, bark to try and tell any dogs to just please leave him alone. If a dog is going to get into his face, he is going to first try to walk away and then, he will give a bark if the dog persists as he just wishes to be left alone. AMAZING restraint and control he has.

The only time now that he makes a sound is if we have him in a crate to eat and he is done and wants out yesterday! LOL

He has proven 100% trustworthy in our home.

We do not know how he is with cats and very small dogs. He does not bother with our 9 pound Sir-Bounce-A-Lots yet, he is not really a dog….he is more like a black blur! 😉

He is completely housebroken and he is not a smooth Saint at all. As he has rehabbed at BHRR, his coat has been coming in beautifully!

He can go to a home that works full time, part time, semi-retired, retired, works from home etc. He is yet again, another very versatile dog! 🙂 AND we know that he is a great traveller! 😉

He is very very very affectionate and loving to humans. Not Saint like at all with strangers…very social and pet me now and please pet me some more! We do not wish to place him in a home that have children under the age of 8, should a home with children wish to appy to adopt him. He has been great with all that he has met, he lives with our two yet, we, want him to not have to have any extra worries about small children accidentally pulling his tail, ears or teasing him. It happens, even, in the best of intended homes and while dogs need to learn to act properly around kids, the same applies to children around dogs. BHRR's Cancun is a VERY patient dog and a very social boy! For all that he has gone through in his short life to date, we would like him to be a big focus in the home.

He gets along with all the dogs here yet, my two cropped Danes tend to still confuse him with those ears they have. He is still trying to figure the ears out…sniffling and snuffling them! LOL

Below is his REALITY SLIDE and I want to extend credit where it is due. Petopia Cancun deserves to be thanked for saving his life and being in the right spot at the right time as he was crossing the road that day. I want to thank Pamela for contacting BHRR and asking if we could possibly assist. I want to thank Nikki for escorting him to Canada. I want to thank Sonyia for road-tripping with me(and taking me on this magical hwy to get to the airport and back so wonderfully) and I want to thank everyone in-between that I may have missed and should not be in helping to come together to give him this opportunity at the best future possible! I want to thank the amazing folks I work with at KAH for all their help getting him to healthy status with me.

It takes a village people say to do things great and right and beyond and it is so true!

I am ONLY one piece in this whole miraculous, amazing journey this boy took! Yes, he lives with me….yet, SOOOOOOOOOOO many, including my family have been involved in helping BHRR's Cancun become this stupendous creature that was always there yet, just needed some love and TLC to shine once more!

His story is such a beautiful one…..I look forward to many more chapters in this boys' life!

UPDATE:

BHRR's Cancun's repeat HWT is still negative and the repeat Tick Borne Panel we did is also still negative plus his fecal is negative so, in a couple more weeks after putting on some more weight PLUS continuing to work further on his obedience (which he is an A+ pupil) and his dog-to-dog social network enlargement; he shall be ready to be placed up for Adoption.

Beginning of March may have good news for him!!

WTG!!

OMG! OMG! I just have to share!

BHRR's Cancun had his very first play moment with another dog! HE DID IT! HE DID IT!

BHRR's Cherry has been working hard to 'wear' him down and it was JS in the end that brought out the zoomies just now and WAHOO! They were off and chasing………for all of about 10 seconds BUT it was there! It happened! AND YAY! It is the beginning! YAY!

For those that many not know, BHRR's Cancun has most likely never seen a dog as big as himself prior to coming to BHRR and the dog testing that was able to be done when he was in Mexico had him tend to 'mirror' how the dog reacted to him and he was quite fearful of dogs! AND those dogs were a lot smaller.

He has relaxed so much since he has arrived with the dogs and no longer roaches up like a cat in worry.  AND well,  with the humans, he was always Mr. Mexico, Social Prince! 😀

YET, for those at our BHRR 'EXPERIENCE' Mini Open House can confirm, he was soooooooooooo comfortable here with the dogs, still integrating with a few AND yet, had not come to the point of being comfortable to play on his own or with another dog….

UNTIL tonight! YIPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPEEE! YOU GO BIG MAN! 🙂

Mr. Mexico AKA BHRR's Cancun is at work with me today AND:

Arrival into Rescue: 77 pounds
January 17th, 2013: 107 pounds
February 7th, 2013: 118.14 pounds

Still to gain: 20 pounds or so.

100% awesomeness and what a model patient!! Social and co-operative (well, ok…maybe not so much when Shannon and I were cleaning ears…he was a wiggly worm yet still a great boy!) yet, was fantastic for his bw for repeat hwt, tick borne panel and microchip. I also gave him his February Revolution.

He rocked his exam and even gave me a fecal sample to test!!

The Vet thoroughly checked out his hind end and they agree with me that he is very straight in the stifle and that means he is lacking rear angles and so walks very straight legged and a bit 'off' with a swinging leg motion, more on one side than the other. He had no cracking or creaking or any signs of discomfort when his hips were flexed plus rotated and his knees as well. He had great ROM plus felxion upon examination. Not noticeably bunny hopping was seen when I gaited him for the Vet to review. ANY future adoptive home must be aware that at some point, with this kind of genetics AND that he is a Giant Breed dog, that HD could be present. During his time at BHRR, should he ever begin to appear to exhibit HD, we will x-ray at that time. At this time, he had an A+ exam.

He does have a bit of tartar on his back teeth(one molar on each side) yet, now that he is being given proper things to chew, that shall assist and any future adoptive home should consider a dental cleaning if ever he is under for any other procedures needed. At this time, there is nothing pressing or urgent – ie not cracked or broken teeth, no gum disease or any such urgent medical need for us to put him under and that makes it an elective surgery. Yet, when he is older, he will benefit very much from a routine dental cleaning from his future adoptive home. We believe that all dogs at some point will benefit from a routine dental cleaning.

He is going to make one lucky home an incredible companion. Will update his blog with photos and video ASAP!!

He also rocked our recent BHRR 'EXPERIENCE' mini open house!! Many commented how he was so comfortable and Mr. Social!

On January 18th, 2013 at 1:19 AM, I sent the following to Pamela to update her. We had a beautiful long conversation for about an hour on my way home on my hands free and I truly cannot wait to got to Cancun to assist them.

What they do in Mexico is INCREDIBLE! We think we see terrible things in Canada yet, talk about being in the trenches of rescue hell. Two days before BHRR's Cancun arrived, a GD was picked up and brought to their latest campaign – they spayed and neutered voer 1,300 animals in just 6 days in their latest campaign – and she had a gunshot wound. A lovely female Harlequin GD. The hole was small yet the blood clots that were coming out of her were enormous and she was suffering with major internal organ damage.

They see machete wounds and dogs are dying of distemper and erlichia(transmitted by ticks) and hit by cars just laying broken on the side of the road, abused, neglected and so much worse, it would truly break your heart. They work hard at educating and promoting responsible dog ownership. One place that I was told about is trying to care for over 200 dogs!!!

For more information on how you can help please visit CANDi and islaanimals!

Back to what I sent to Pamela:

He is here and settling in beautifully!!

Ate the very small supper I offered for him, had another pee – that is four since we took him off the flight and is resting well!!

I will send photos and updates and they shall be on his blog that I shall create on our website and sending the very short videos I have now to you!!

Thank you! Thank you!

BHRR's Cancun – Two more photos of his time in Cancun, Mexico

HERE is BHRR's Cancun sat the airport ready for his flight to Canada on January 17th, 2013!

I was so excited and thrilled that he finally was coming! To work on assisting him from afar to now being able to assist and love on him in person…FINALLY!

I made the 12 hour roundtrip drive and thanks to my co-pilot from Brighton, ON who kept me company and also helped me navigate to the airport on the magic 407 highway off Brock in TO! 🙂

BHRR's Cancun – January 17th, 2013 AND with two of his angels from Petopia Cancun that saved him!

The first two attempts to get BHRR's Cancun to Canada failed due to various reasons – December 16th and January 5th.

So, I was most cautious when the new date was scheduled of January 17th, 2013 for him to arrive in TO.

Yet, the closer we got, the more excited we became that all the patience and work and time was going to finally bring him to Canada!

The flight details!

His arrival date is January 17th.  Her flight number is TS 747 on Air Transat
Departs cancun 12:30 CT Arrives Toronto  5:15pm EST.

Two more photos of him below. He would spend his days in this pool! HE was so hot!

December 2012 in 'his' pool!

On December 11th, 2012, I received the additional information on BHRR's Cancun and I also knew and was told that he would have been around very few if any Giants for they are not that common Mexico:

Oh yes, as for the Sanson and other dogs… they are not sure how he really is with other dogs because they were unable to socialize him because he was not vaccinated.  I believe he mirrors other dogs.  So if the dog is barking at him, he will bark back.  He spent about 6 months on the streets so they do get accustomed to having the street dog mentality.  BUT, there are many dogs that I have rescued from the streets here, who quickly learn they do not need to defend their territory or themselves.  Once they realize they are safe and the other dogs are not a threat and will not attack them, they really mellow right out and play like the pups they are.  If you need to, I can put you in contact with Andrea and she can explain more.

Have a great day and thank you again for helping us with Sanson.  We really cant wait to get the photos of him running through the snow!

On December 10th, 2012, I received the 'story' on him. He weighed 77 pounds upon being picked up, came to BHRR at 108 pounds and still has another 25-30 pounds to go.

Below are some photos of when he was picked up.

I am going to tell you the story of Sanson. We found him at the end of Punta Sam in Cancun on the 29th of September, I was on my car with my dogs and so this beautiful but amazingly skinny giant crossing the street, I got out of the car to call him and with no hesitation he ran to me and kissed my hands. Obviously I had no heart to leave him there so I opened the back of my van and he jumped in with his front legs but didn’t have enough energy to put up his back legs so I helped him up and he just fell asleep. I was on my way to a spaying and neutering campaign Petopia and Tierra de animales had organized so I took him with me with the hopes we could neuter him, once I got there we checked him and he was way too skinny to go through surgery so we fed him and gave him water. In the afternoon I got him back in my car and brought him to Petopia where we cut his hair and took of all the ticks, he was very infested but we were able to clear him after a few hours. His weight at the time was 35 kg (77 pounds) 55 pounds less than what a St. Bernard should weigh. We took him in and started getting him better, we had to measure his food since his stomach was so small we couldn’t just give him much food, so we fed him many times a day but small portions, we did exams to see how he was and obviously he was anemic and also had anaplasmosis and ehrlichiosis so we started treating him. We so a difference right away he is a great dog always thankful and playful with everyone and loves to be pet. We didn’t socialize him much since he had no shots and we had to wait for him to get better, now it seems he does ok with some and not so good with other, he doesn’t seem as an aggressive dog but maybe from the street he created a character to protect himself, if a dog barks at him he barks back, if a dog wags his tail he will wag his tail. Now Sanson has been neutered and has all his shots, and we couldn’t be happier that he is having a new start in Canada! Thank you so much to everyone who helped to make this possible! Now Sanson weighs 49 kg (108 pounds) and he is ready to be adopted and loved by a family, he is approximately 2 years old. He still has a way to go but he has passed the critical days he just needs to keep eating!

(For now he has finished his treatment for the ehrlichiosis and anaplasmosis but tests should be done in six months to make sure he is completely free and needs no more treatment.)

We actually found his first owners when we started posting him on facebook, they had given him in adoption to a woman who had a big garden but what they told us is that after a few weeks this woman called them to give him back and they had no room to take him back, they tried to contact her again after this and she never answered her phone again, she lived very far away from where I found him so the only theory even the family has is that she abandoned him there at least 6 months before I found him. He is a warrior!

BHRR's Cancun – I called him 'Cancun' as he is form Cancun, Mexico and in honour of Petopia CANCUN who saved him!

I sent back another response confirming that we shall assist and the following came my way:

Thank you so very much!  It will make a lot of people down here very happy to hear he is going to Canada!!  I cant wait to see the photos of him in the snow!  All our mexi rescues seem to just LOVE it!  He should love it even more since that is where he is meant to be.  As for the dogs on that page with petopia, most of those dogs are owned and are brought to the doggy daycare often for socializing, exercise and good ol love.  (the lucky ones!!!)

A lot of people are going to be so happy for him!!!

Thank you again!!

Pamela

On December 4th, 2012, I sent a response saying that BHRR would commit and asked some more questions and received the following in turn:

Hi Gwen,

Thank you so much for responding!

He is no more than 2 years of age, great with people and children.  He is ok with most other dogs, if he is introduced well but he will probably need some help with socializing.  They are unsure how he is with cats, as they are a doggy daycare.   He had ehrilichia, but was fully treated and is clear.  He is clear of heartworm, has been neutered and is fully vaccinated.  He has not biten anyone that we are aware of… and they say is just a charmer that loves the people.  He is a little under weight due to the ehrlichia, but will add on more pounds now that he is clear of that.  Anything else that you need to know, please ask and I will be sure to answer quickly!!!

Pamela

On Tuesday December 4th, 2012, I received the following about a Saint Bernard Male in Mexico, yes MEXICO!

My name is Pamela X and Im a Canadian living and working in Cancun Mexico.  I spend most of time here saving street dogs and work closely with islaanimals.org as well as CANDi (Cats and Dogs International), both organizations started by amazing Canadian women, doing much needed free spay and neuter campaigns for the street population as well as to pet owners who cannot afford it.

We currently have a pure bred Saint Bernard here who was rescued by Petopia Cancun.  He had ehrlichia, but was treated and is now clear.  He is currently getting neutered, dewormed, and all his vaccinations and should be able to travel as early as December 11th.  We are trying to locate a rescue in Canada that can help facilitate his adoption as he is not meant to be down here in the tropical climate.  They have had many people interested in him here, but they do not want to adopt him out here as pure breds are more exploited than anything else and as soon as they find out they are neutered, they turn them back out because they cannot make money breeding them.

I look forward to speaking with you.  Please feel free to call me, and if Im not home, just leave a message and Ill call you back a.s.a.p

Sincerely,
