BHRR's Canvas – ? – December 22nd, 2014
**Victim to Bloat and Tort**
Our 7th precious dog since we opened our doors in 1996.   Each one has been like a devastating train wreck. Crushing to our hearts and, to all those that love these amazing dogs as much as we do.
Typing this post, makes my stomach just roll with nausea.
He was perfectly fine and, in fact, we have a great testimonial from BHRR BOD M. Leung from our annual "CHAIN OF SUCCESS' potluck that was hosted on December 20th, at our home about how awesome he was doing.
I went to bed around 3:30 AM on the morning of the 22nd after tucking everyone in and, saying my routine 'love you and have a good sleepie' to all the dogs.
Sean was up around 5 AM and, he ran to get me to say there was an emergency.
Just as with my beloved RIP Maggi,(who bloated/torted herself on July 17th, 2009), there was nothing 'wrong' with how BHRR's Canvas was laying……yet, he never layed on his side like that(Same with Maggi)……I knew something was wrong.
I knew he had bloated – I go back to my article I wrote about "KNOW YOUR DOG" –
http://www.birchhaven.org/an-invisible-page/bloat
Sadly, he torted so severely and, he passed in my arms before 8:30 AM as we worked to save him at the Hospital….
I told him how much I loved him, what a brave boy he was and, that it was ok to let go if he had to….I told him that he was such a good boy and, thanked him so much for being such a gift in my life and, that of all that met and adored him like us.
He went from being such a terrified(who could ever forget the video's of him cowering in terror under a table at the shelter) and, being so emaciated. He put on over 50 pounds in his successful rehab at BHRR.
The hole he has left is like a bomb went off…shattered our hearts and soul are….
I miss his windmill tail wags of such vigorous happiness….
I miss those special sounds of his when he 'told me off' that it was time to begin the day and, partake in all of the adventures and fun for that day!
I almost do not want to fix the front of my brand new stove now as, it was he and BHRR's Bishop that smashed the front of it horsing around as, I told them to 'take it outside' and, they gave each other one last body bump as they ran in happiness outside….
The memories are many of this miraculous dog…..yet, that the opportunities for more memories have been stolen from him, rips me up….each and every bloat, we have caught in time….it tears me to shreds that, despite that, we have lost 7 now to this terrible condition….
He was the fastest tort I have ever witnessed.
RIP my Canvy Wanvy…..
I will visit you in my dreams with all the others that have blessed me over the many years….
I am so sorry that I could not save you in the end….

We will be out to visit around 11 AM on Saturday ourselves to get some photos' and, I am hoping to bring BHRR's Ichabod Crane, BHRR's Zayna and BHRR's Salem for their very first XMAS photo's!
I heard a rumor that BHRR's Mav 'could' also put in a celebrity appearance!

FINAL (Medium)

Remember this once terrified – head down, tail tucked, terrified(remember the video's of him cowering under a desk while at the shelter?! ) emaciated Great Dane that only weighed barely 96 pounds?!!!
LOOK at him now!!! No longer emaciated! Head up, relaxed, curious and, he does the best windmill of tail wags!
**He needs a quiet home, and, one that shall continue to keep building upon the strong foundation laid at BHRR.
This was taken at KAH on Friday June 27th, 2014!
STILL AVAILABLE FOR ADOPTION!

BHRR's Canvas now weighs 55.1 KGs! 🙂 He did so well at the Vet. He was very brave and proud of him!!!! Below are some photo's of him! Heart and lungs are great and, the Vet LOVED how far he has come in rehab, both emotionally and physically. We work to keep making him the best dog he can be.

He received so many compliments on his glossy coat, tons of muscle mass and, how handsome he is. 🙂 He was not comfortable enough to take any treats from folks, yet, he was no longer that catatonic dog that first arrived to BHRR.

I ended up not bringing him to the hv as, I needed to see how BHRR's Groves did on his own as he, would be the only dog in the home. BHRR's Canvas got to hang out at KAH while we were off doing the home-visit.

BHRR's Canvas – June 27th, 2014

CanvasJune272014 photo 4

BHRR's Canvas has his annual scheduled for later today and, I cannot wait to find out what his current weight is, how he does back at the Vet Hospital and, he shall be heading with me to help with a hv later on also.

I am also working on lining up a possible temp foster – extended play date for up to 2 weeks – for him. 🙂 This will be so GOOD for him. 🙂

We remain patient that the right matched calm and quiet home shall find him. He is an absolute riot and goofball to all he knows and loves and, that windmill tail of his is awesome!!! 🙂 He will never be a dog meant to be thrown into the wilds of a busy social life, either in or out of a home. Yet, I also do not want to see all the hard work done at BHRR thrown out by someone wanting to adopt him and, then keeping him 'hidden' from the world. NO glass bubbles! 😉

Happy balance is needed.

I am WAY overdue on photo's for BHRR's Canvas. Here are two taken today! We continue to be patient for that right matched forever loving home to find him. AND, if any of our approved BHRR Homes would like a playdate/playvisit with him, PLEASE EMAIL

BHRR’s Canvas has a very very very exciting announcement to make! HE DID IT! HE DID IT! HE DID IT!

It has been a very long and so rewarding journey of rehabilitation for this incredible boy! YET, he did it! The patience, time, consistency, routine, heart, love, obedience and experience, education plus knowledge of dog behaviour/training has PAID off! HE is finally ready to say ‘I AM AVAILABLE FOR ADOPTION!‘ 🙂 In fact, he is woofing it loudly! 🙂 No dog at BHRR is going to be placed up for adoption before they are ready. It is not about bringing them in and pumping them up and ‘hoping’ that an adoption works out….

It is about doing it the right way each and every time and, for those that truly are there for BHRR, they ‘get this’, they ‘support’ this and, they think this is the BEST way that a r/q Rescue should be operating. 🙂

While I was out of the country, we had 11 folks come in and out(up to 3/4 each stayed day here) and, he did AWESOME! This was his final test! 🙂 🙂 He will never be that ‘fluttering social’ butterfly yet, he is social and, affectionate and, if you give him time, a ‘village idiot’ and a ‘class clown’ and, he will warm up and if you, just be patient, avoid the eye contact, you will get a new best friend. His windmill wags of happiness were noted by many while I was away and, YAY! 🙂 To those that did not pressure or push him, they were deeply rewarded into a world of such a magnificent creature.

This was the Dane seen in the videos’ at the shelter, cowering under a desk…he came to BHRR and from that very first night, I got major tail windmill wags and, he went from hiding out in the 3+ acres of fenced in yard when people came over, to being in the house and, around yet, not too close, to coming up and bumping people with his nose, to quietly standing by their side and, then now, asking for love over the time he has been here! YES! YES!

BHRR’s Canvas, YOU are why we are here! YOU are why we are needed and YOU are why, I do what I do and continue to do it! 🙂

Here is a Video from March 12th taken by the ever lovely BHRR Approved Adopter and BHRR Volunteer, Bre! 🙂 She wuved him and her him!

VIDEO – MARCH 12th, 2014 – CANVAS

I would love to see him in a home with at least one other like minded dog(male or female, does not matter) that shall continue to shape and carry him on the strong foundation built at BHRR. We would like to see a home within 2 hours of our location as, I want to do a transitional adoption – a few visits with me, a few visits without me, an overnight and, either a weekend overnighter and, then a drop-off and stay….for those homes that we have done this to in the past with, they will support and stand up and affirm why this is so integral to a chain of success ending for the home and the BHRR canine.

AND, as always, we are not in a rush. The right matched home with either find him or, he is already living a great life with so many human and, canine and also horse, 3 demanding gpiggers and one snake friend(s)! 😉

He can go to a home that works full time or part-time, at the house, or out YET, he must go to a home that understands not to put him in a glass bubble, feel sorry or pity for him and set him up for SA behavours. He is crate trained and, that is his safe spot.

SO, we do not necessarily want a Dane experienced home BUT, we are looking for an experienced dog home that shall continue to make him the best dog he can be. He has become very social with his circle of success friends and, we want to see that expand….and grow.

I am not sure how he is with cats. As with anything, integration would be key. He is wonderful with the gpiggers and snakes and all dogs of all sizes that he has met to date.

GENTLE REMINDER & UPDATEThis event will NOW also be used to also help BHRR’s Porridge – Rushed into KAH March 19th for when I returned from being out of the country, he was not well. He had dropped 3 KGs(6.6 pounds) – he is down to 74 KGs, had a nasal discharge, flared nostrils, no temp yet, belly breathing and could not breathe with his mouth closed, had not drank anything in over 24 hours, minimal eating, lethargic, swollen lymph nodes and, could not rest on his side(his fav resting spot).

PORRIDGE VET RESULTS TO DATE: Full exam done, lungs sounded ok, did a full blood work up including a heart blood test(awaiting results, we could not use Dormitor(if he did have a heart condition, this would be not in his best interest) to sedate for x-rays and the Torb barely took his anxiety edge off(we were not able to do his nails as he needs the Dorm also to sedate him) and, we could only get the right lat for x-rays yet, the heart on that side look almost completely normal. There was no noticeable bulge or significant enlargement yet, we had to take four shots to get his full chest and lungs just of the one side and the left side could not be completed at this time. We took biopsies of his lymph nodes, heart rate was elevated. The staff there noted how poor his energy level was from his norm ‘must maim with my happy tail and enthusiasm hyper harle happy boy ‘tude’ and while, he did eat some wet canned food, he had a hard time trying to eat anything dry and could only take one dry piece of T/D that was offered to him. The Vet has prescribed Doxy for him 4 tabs BID of the 100 mg IN case it may be infection related yet, he would not be presented ‘classically’ if that were the case. Yet, we are being proactive from all angles.

He went down hill so fast while I was away and, I thank all for monitoring him and I have trusted and do trust that those that were here, did keep his best interest at heart and, did not see fit to bring him in. I was completely ok for hi to go in for peace of mind and, I had been told that he was eating and drinking well and energy level was ok, no nasal discharge and lungs were clear(one person here is a nurse). In discussing him in more depth tonight with some of the wonderful souls that were here, it was noted that a weight loss had been seen, that drinking levels had gone down and energy level had changed. He was apparently fine and completely normal up to late last week and, I arrived home on Tuesday early afternoon. Whatever he has, it is aggressive….. 🙁

AND, in the 24+ hours that I have been home, his condition from there worsened further and, I jumped in bringing him in ASAP. Even called KAH to change his appointment to an earlier time slot.

Possible diagnosis at this time range from early heart to early lymphoma to early nasal tumor. Good case scenario, an infection of some sort.

AND, here is the PV Stittsville, Nail Trim Event Poster! $15 for grinds/$10 for Trims on Saturday March 22nd from 10 am – 5 pm, and, all money shall benefit BHRR’s Coach, our ‘heart’ boy!

Purse Puppy Coach shall be coming with me after my work shift on March 22nd,  – around 2:30 PM to visit and thank all those that will be there AND, he will be doing ‘KUDDLES 4 KASH’ to also help raise some money for his bills. AND, for those that have had the pleasure of hugging this boy, he is DELIGHTFUL! I may also bring BHRR’s Angel Noelle or perhaps BHRR’s Torque! 🙂

On Tuesday March 4th, BHRR’s Purse Puppy’s Coach weight was 14.9 KGs(37.78 pounds)! Since his arrival into Rescue, he has put on 34.28 pounds! 🙂 In just 14 weeks! 🙂

I have a huge blog post to make from this Vet visit and then coming back the next day for emergency x-rays and an ECG (the results were suppose to be back within 24 hours….) and, from there, the next steps for him. I have the report from the one Vet to post and, I have passed along all information and details to PVAR who have the other two puppies and who adopted the mom. At the minimum, it is believed that he has a congenital condition. 🙁 AND, the chances that HE is the only one in that large litter to have this condition is slim to none.

As I am heading offline for the next week+, blog updates will be to a minimum to none – SORRY! 🙁 I am going out of the country and later this year, also plan on going back out of the country as I have been invited to Costa Rica and Nicarauga to assist/train/mentor in a spay/neuter clinic and, to work with the strays etc. over there.  So, I will post as I can and, thanks to all that follow the blogs!!! 🙂

Now, we just have to have those right matched forever loving homes find all of these great BHRR doggies that are AVAILABLE FOR ADOPTION! 🙂

BHRR’s Angel Noelle’s ‘BREAKING BILLS BAKE’ Online Auction Fundraiser
*Items do not need to be baked until the Online Auction is over. 🙂
ONLINE AUCTION: STARTS January 18th, 2014(7 AM EST) & ENDS January 23rd, 2014(9 PM EST) – We have 32 items to date!

Thank you to EACH person who has stepped up to help us with sharing this request for donations for this fundraiser, offering to make an item, sending those very precious notes of support and kindness AND, in believing in this very special ‘angel’! As always, thank you! Thank you! THANK YOU! What a brutal start to 2014, we have had at BHRR. 🙁 With being in a food crisis, BHRR’s Angel Noelle’s amputation and, BHRR’s Blooms’ gas bloat. 🙁

All monies raised in this Online Auction shall go towards paying for BHRR’s Angel Noelle’s Bills.

This sweet Rottiex puppy used to live in a crackhouse. She lived a life of constant abuse and, at 12 weeks of age, she was abused, picked up and thrown. Her leg/elbow was broken and left untreated for another 12 weeks. She received no medical treatment during this time as my leg worked to try and heal on its own. I was terrifed and in extreme pain.

On Christmas Eve, an ‘angel’ contacted Gwen and, asked if Birch Haven Rescue & Rehabiltition(BHRR) could assist. BHRR immediately stepped up and another ‘angel’ came to her rescue and took her from this very bad place as ‘because I whimpered in pain’, the Owners wanted me gone ASAP and would have killed me if I had stayed with them.

On Monday January 13th, 2014, her leg was amputated and her bills will be close to $5,000 once all of her rehab is finished. She still has to have post-off follow-ups/exams, vaccines, physiotherapy etc.

Here is a copy of a post that I made on our Birch Haven Facebook Page. For those that are inquiring as to ‘where’ the page went.

As we have many followers that are not on facebook, this is a post that can be ignored. 🙂 For those that do follow us on facebook and, missed this post, here is a copy….

This is the final post as part of the ‘end of year statement’ for the BHRR BOD….that absolute privilege has fallen upon my typing fingers…

So much to say, a Gwennie Novel that would be a Gwennie chapter to truly capture it all!!

It has been an incredible year for BHRR, 13 WOW adoptions, so many faces put to names of lovely folks near and far, friendships plus relationships that have strengthened further and increased those links on that BHRR CHAIN OF SUCCESS, new kind and beautiful faces that have chosen our cause to support and believe in, the miracles of so many that were considered by several to be ‘lost causes’, r/q rescues working side by side making an much bigger positive difference to animals out there in need, the laughs, the smiles, the fun(Yes, r/q rescue can be fun!), the public education and community education events, play dates and play visits, the fundraisers(the crossposting!) the walks/hikes, the animals plus people that have touched us to the core and made our hearts just burst in warmth and happiness, the donations of lifesaving food and, other material items, the financial hand to help pay for much needed bills and more dog food, the driving and the more driving and the more driving, and yes, the hugs!
We thank each you that has been there and we look forward to what we hope promises to be an even better year for all ahead. We are NOTHING without you…..AND, to my BHRR BOD, thank you!

It has been such a hard year in others ways, and we take those important life lessons learned and will work that much more diligently in making better decisions/choices in 2014 and onward….we are focused in letting go of the things that we cannot change and that are unhealthy in the name of r/q rescuing.
We endeavour to practise what we preach, research, stay updated and keep walking the talk!
We have cried and still do cry over those that shall no longer be with us – human and animal and, candles are lit in the most honourable plus respectful silence of those that we can no longer physically touch and talk to and embrace……We miss you and, we are better in the having been touched by you…..

We thank all those that have assisted us in not changing BHRR yet, in continuing to help make it a better version of itself! I stand up and applaud each of you and then, I kneel down in the most humblest of thanks in turn, for I appreciate each and every gesture from a dollar to an encouraging word to helping to do nails or helping me to keep making dogs more well balanced and set-up for success! You may not think you have done much, yet, you have…especially on those dark trench days….

2014 MARKS year #18 for our small r/q Rescue and, that moves me into an announcement that I have been slowly sharing with people over the past few months….

The BHRR BOD has been discussing this for close to a 1 year now….

As of 11:59 PM on Wednesday January 1st, 2014; we shall be unpublishing our page….and, deactivating the BHRR BOD account.

This was not an easy step to take by any means for we understand how key networking and social media is….this page has brought us soooooooooooo much goodness and kindness and, we go into this knowing that we shall find ourselves most likely struggling even more financially and with food needs than we ever have had to date…..13 dogs were adopted in 2013, 17 in 2012 and this page is to be credited with these success stories…..

We are a small group and like many groups, we are Volunteers and lead busy lives outside of r/q rescue and, in frequent discussions with members of the BHRR BOD, the bandwidth is just not there right now for me to keep up the pace of this page plus what so many have originally been attracted plus loved about BHRR, the detailed blogs…that is very much a ‘signature’ BHRR arena and, it has had to take a backseat more often than I would have liked in 2013.

2014, is also year of much excitement(and some stress!) in my own professional and personal life – I will be defending in 2014 in re: to my PhD that I have worked pt on for too many years now…, I am furthering my training to do more work internationally with strays, street dogs and spay/neuter clinics and teaching and being mentored….I have been invited to Costa Rica and Nicaragua and, I will also begin to shadow at other Hospitals to increase my own skill set and education with qualifications plus experience. AND, I also look forward to my time at the ES when I can get there. As a result, I shall also be deleting/deactivating my personal account. Barry, Catalina and Mary will remain our eyes and ears out there in fb land.

My priority has always been to the animals under our authority and being hands on and keeping our success rates unparalled out there….that, shall not change.

It is my sincerest of wishes that by this time next year, we can publish this page again….it has become such a staple to my day and, I look forward to coming back to post of daily tips and questions and quotes and all things BHRR plus beyond to help other groups also network their own events/animals and throw our support into their corner!

I have sincerely enjoyed sharing the ups and the downs as part of our commitment to full disclosure and that, we are only perfect in our imperfections as humans….

So, it is will deepest regret that this shall be my last post on this page for some time……..

The BHRR BOD is still trying to figure out how best put forth our requests for assistance and right now, we shall go back to using the website for postings…so, please do visit uswww.birchhaven.org for YOU are the real hearts and souls of BHRR, along with the animals…..

May love, happiness and health find their way and stay with you and yours in 2014….that is my wish for you!

Raising my glass to all of you in a toast of my heart to you!

FROM myself, words truly do fail me with how beautiful these cards are plus the stamps AND Anna’s heart…..Thank you! THANK YOU!

From Anna G-h:

“We are delighted to announce that we have note-cards and matching stamps (domestic permanent) available with all funds donated to Birch Haven to assist in vetting and food costs. Each are 4 for $5. Please let me(Anna) know if you would like to order any. We can mail free of charge once we have received payment for your order. These are blank inside so are perfect for many occasions.”

NOTICE:

BHRR does not adopt out during the XMAS season due to our position that it is not in the best interest of any new addition being added during such a busy, exciting and somewhat stressful time for many.

Quite a few other Rescues, Shelters, Pounds etc. have also begun to follow a similar protocol to what we have been doing for so many years.

Our XMAS Shutdown period for this year is from Saturday December 14th, 2013 to Tuesday January 7th 2013 inclusive.

During this time, BHRR is available 24/7 as always for requests for assistance of animals in need.

Thank you for your continued understanding – The BHRR Team

Our 6th ANNUAL 'JUST IN TIME FOR XMAS' Online Auction HAS started! 🙂 We NOW have 87 items posted – LINK BELOW – and more to come daily! This is not a facebook auction. As we have supporters not on fb, we use a wp plug-in app on our home website.

YOU have to go visit daily to see just what is there! 🙂 THANKS to all that have donated so kindly, generously and the animals thank you too! 🙂

The BHRR Auction began at 7:00 AM EST on Saturday November 23rd, 2013.

The BHRR Auction will end at 9:00 PM EST on Thursday December 5th, 2013

http://www.birchhaven.org/fundraising-2008/online-auction-2012

From Friday October 18th to Sunday November 3rd, 2013 inclusive, BHRR will not be open for adoptions or the intake of adoption applications.

We do not adopt out around the Halloween season and many others Rescues, shelters, pounds etc. have also begun to follow a similar protocol.

We do not believe it is in the best interest of the animals in our program, especially for dark coloured dogs.

During this time, BHRR is available 24/7 as always for requests for assistance of animals in need.

A short time ago, I received an email from the most talented and I want to say also, very beautiful and special Liz Bradley of The Ottawa Dog Blog.

http://ottawadogblog.ca/2013/08/we-won-the-top-most-influential-dog-blog-online/

As many are aware, there was a voting contest recently for the Most Influential Dog Blog online and the competition was quite tough AND, thanks to such an incredible surrounding community The Ottawa Dog Blog WON! By taking 60% of the votes!

HUGE Congratulations Liz & Jane!!! Extremely well deserved! Your blog is quite important and valued deeply by so many and you make a BIG difference daily with all your efforts! I have loved watching your amazing 'baby' grow plus develop!

AND, what so humbly surprised me(AND, made me grab yet, another tissue…this time with a welling up of good tears!), was that Liz/Jane was awarded a lifesaving generous gift of $500 donation to the charity of her choice AND they chose BHRR!! As they have posted about, there are SO many great r/q Rescues deserving and in need and, I am touched, humbled and feel privileged to have our small rescue chosen to be the recipient of such an incredible gesture……Just honoured! Immensely!

There really needs to be more words to express THANK YOU! I am MORE thank thankful! I am genuinely appreciative plus grateful and filled with intense gratitude…….

THE BELOW IS FROM LIZ/JANE:

"It was a difficult decision as to the charity who we would pick to receive the donation as all of the Ottawa charities work so hard.

We decided on Birch Haven Rescue and Rehabilitation to receive the $500 donation! BHRR is an amazing rescue who is in need of money to feed the large and giant breeds they rescue – this money will go a long way towards food and vet bills for them!

Thank you again to all who voted. I am so very proud to live in this great city surrounded by fellow dog lovers.

With love and belly rubs,
Liz (and Jane)"

**Could I please ask our fans/supporters/family/friends to take a moment and go over and CONGRATULATE Liz/Jane immensely and tell them HOW uber awesome they are with what they do daily!!!**

AND, here is what I wrote on their lovely Blog post!

HUGE Congratulations Liz & Jane!!! Extremely well deserved! Your blog is quite important and valued deeply by so many and you make a BIG difference daily with all your efforts! I have loved watching your amazing ‘baby’ grow plus develop!

As Liz/Jane have posted, there are SO many great r/q Rescues deserving and in need and, I am touched, humbled and feel immensely privileged to have had our small rescue of Birch Haven Rescue & Rehabilitation Services chosen to be the recipient of such an incredible gesture……Just honoured! Immensely!

I also wish to publicly thank Camp Cookstown from my heart, for having such a great contest, for helping to get the word out regarding so many fantastic online blogs and for supporting the work done in animal rescue with this very generous and lifesaving gift of $500.

There really needs to be more words to express THANK YOU! I am MORE thank thankful! I am genuinely appreciative plus humbled and filled with intense gratitude…….

BHRR's Canvas' reality slide

October 2012 – 96 pounds
April 2013 – 40+ pounds GAINED!

*THUMBS up my goofball!

We continue to work on his emotional rehab. This was the GD that was cowering under a desk at the shelter. A very broken GD.
This is the boy that I am now seeking 'dates' with for me to take him on. He is not scared of all those that he loves and trusts. We are continuing to teach and show him that strangers will not hurt him, that hands can be helping and loving…not hurtful and cruel.

ISO: dates with men & women! As always, not for me…. 🙂

This is for BHRR's Canvas. He is now ready for those next out of BHRR steps. He has put on 40+ pounds in rehab here and he is finally now ready to move to his next behavoural and emotional rehab journey. 🙂

As a few are aware, he is an absolute goofy spazz around those he now trusts and loves and his tail is a nonstop helicopter spin in his happiness of wagging it nonstop!!

I have been working slowly with him with car rides and visiting quiet places and now, I am seeking dates as part of our BHRR visitation rehab programs.

I am looking at setting up mutually convenient time/date at approved people's homes for me to take him and sit and chat and keep him moving forward to the land of living outside of BHRR. This boy had a real abusive past and it has been baby baby baby steps.

If anyone is open and interested in becoming part of his circle of set-up for success, please EMAIL

Thanks!!

UPDATE:
We now have three approved Volunteer homes signed up! Would like one or two more! 🙂

The Gift Certificates are good for up to one year from purchase!

DEADLINE is February 8th, 2013 to get in your orders so that they can be received by Valentine's Day! 🙂

UPDATE: BHRR's Canvas has put on another 11.66 pounds!! Good for you sweetie!! He now weighs 114.40 pounds(52 KGS).

He still has a ways to go and also emotionally for while he was better at KAH today, he still was quite nervous.

At home, he is a complete wing nut with a tail that wags vigourously with his tail in a helicopter motion! He travelled in the car like a pro and his leash manners continue to just improve and they were impeccable today! 🙂 He was so quiet and well behaved at KAH. Very proud of this young man…very!

Thanks to 'you know who you are' for taking the time to give him some treats after his show of bravery for his HWT. 🙂 That he began to take liver treats from you after I gave him a few was huge for his emotional boosting courage!!

Baby steps and we are moving forward!! Proud of you BHRR's Canvas!!

Two photos of him below are from our traditional Christmas Eve Photo Shoot. 🙂 He was really scared of the Santa Hat, so we put it behind Sean and eventually, he let it lay near him. As long as no one was wearing it, he was ok.

UPDATE Sunday December 16th, 2012:

UPDATE ON VOTING CONTEST:

As many are aware from the public blanket statement posts I was making, as soon as I understood what was able to really occur with the voting in the food contest, I contacted MDB. This was not resulting in a fair contest to all r/q Rescues involved.

We have been in conversation for the last few days re: this contest and per the positioning of BHRR, we will only wish to operate with continued integrity plus honesty and no food is worth any compromising of that.

Either we all are able to vote once a day, only ever once, or multiple times daily. What was happening was not equal or fair to all involved. BHRR and it was so important that MDB be made aware of what was happening.

I am aware that they did a reset a couple of days ago to try and have people being able to only vote once every 24 hours and some could and others still could not vote again.

We have continued to support MDB in any successful resolution they felt was necessary and per their public post today, they have decided to do a reset from scratch – starting over.

I thank EACH of our supporters and believers that have campaigned so hard to assist the animals of BHRR and in sharing! 🙂 No words can tell you how much this has meant to BHRR for we do go through 120 POUNDS of dog food PER DAY.

AND good luck to all participating for round two!

BHRR's 5th ANNUAL "JUST IN TIME FOR XMAS" Online Auction is ON NOW UNTIL Thursday December 6th @ 9:00 PM EST!

We currently have 122 very exciting items up for grabs! MORE being added throughout the last day of this auction! 🙂

All monies raised shall go to the care of animals in need of BHRR and also assist the two new Saint Bernards headed our way!

BHRR does not adopt out during the XMAS season due to our position that it is not in the best interest of a new addition being added during such a busy, exciting and somewhat stressful time for many. Our XMAS Shutdown period for this year is from Saturday December 15th, 2012 to Monday January 7th, 2013 inclusive.

I read the report from Dr. Crews when I was at work last night.

Puzzling to all around.

The one thing I noted was that she had a question re: ear cleaning and if any had been done even up to 20 minutes prior to this episode and unfortunately, the information that BHRR'S Canvas had been sleeping prior to this incident was not communicated. He woke up in this manner.

She did not see anything obvious yet, even with sedation, it appears that it was hard to completely capture everything(he is a BIG doggie!) yet, Dr. Crews did not feel lesions, vestibular disease or Wobblers was a likely culprit. On the other hand, nothing could be definititely ruled out. Could be early signs of anything AKA X, yet what is X is what all of us would like to know….so, no diagnosis for BHRR's Canvas can be made right now.

So, we remain monitoring, he is on his ear meds and antibiotics and is happy and playing and doing all things normal. AND in fact, he is beginning to slide out of that honeymoon period and Gwennie's BOOT CAMP! Gwennie's BOOT CAMP remains in full swing! 😉

There is no recommendation being made to run out to do a myleogram etc. at this time.

BHRR's Canvas was dropped off by Sean at the Vets for 7:30 AM on Thursday November 8th, 2012 for the x-rays under sedation plus bw.

Everything crossed for him.

I still am so thankful I took those videos….that really helped the Vets to understand what he was like……and even though, those videos were not half as bad as he was right after he woke up, it gives a good idea of what he was acting like.

I had my eye on him for most of the night and he was perfectly normal and the same this this AM.

With this 'episode', at this time, we think it best that dear BHRR's Canvas stay home on Saturday with the rest of the Boers for quiet and calmness and we will announce the other BHRR doggie to attend the Pet Valu event on 457 Hazeldean Road shortly.

HUGE thanks for all the encouraging plus supportive words for him AND us to date!

For those asking what he needs or what they can do for him, at this time, we have everything all covered. BUT THANKS! The biggest thing are Vet bills yet, that is the same all over for any r/q Rescue and we thank all of you for really rooting for him again! 🙂

UPDATE: November 8th, 2012:

X-rays have not shown any noticeable lesions or tumours etc. that may have indicated why this happened to him. They are being sent off to Dr. Crews for review.

His bw was overall unremarkable. Some inflammation values that could be explained by him having been vaccinated recently prior to come to BHRR and not much else.

The Vet's recommendation is to see what Dr. Crews has to say yet, not just rush out to a neurologist etc. at this time.

BHRR's Canvas is acting completely normal! Yet, we still opted to not bring him out to the BHRR community education plus public awareness event that we attended on November 10th at Pet Valu(457 Hazeldean Road).

Kanata Animal Hospital (613) 836-2848 and they will take Visa, M/C and AMEX over the phone under the account of 'Birch Haven Rescue' for 'Canvas'. They will take Debit or Cash in person at 440 Hazeldean Road in Kanata, Ontario

UPDATE: Wednesday November 7th, 2012 @ 5:30 PM:

UPDATE: he was seen by two talented trusted Vets and was almost back to normal when Sean arrived and is now completely normal.

They do not know what it is for sure and I sent onwards the above video to them to see.

They said not a stroke, not vestibular disease, not a seizure, not an allergic reaction and they feel that it could to be some form of an inner ear imbalance. That is where their feelings are at this time. As to why, they do not know and cannot say. He is 100% normal now.

He has no ear infections presenting and could possibly have one slight rupture yet hard to tell. His pupils are normal.

Weight gain is almost 10 pounds since he arrived to BHRR!

They are going to treat with Surolan and Cephalexin and we will monitor for any further episodes.

Sean is on his way home with him now and I asked him to profusely thank all for their assistance and getting us in so fast and being so awesome!!

They were so thorough and compassionate and helpful. AND also honest about their findings.

I shall be watching him like a hawk and heading back in like a flash of there is another episode.

So…..good news and unknown news on this dear boy….

Thank you ALL for every word and thought and caring gesture made.

I am not one to panic, especially in my Career Paths, yet, I was stressed……

UPDATE: Wednesday November 7th, 2012 @ 8:05 PM:

UPDATE: The one Vet has reviewed my video.

Recommending to have x-rays under sedation.

Will be booking that.

He appeared to have some wobbly bobbly when he first arrived to BHRR yet, that had been put down to lack of muscle, weak and being so neglected and starved…..

Now, they are wondering if someone else was/is going on.

UPDATE: Wednesday November 7th, 2012 @ 10:45 PM:

UPDATE: had a most wonderful half an hour conversation with one of his vets and BHRR's Canvas is now booked for x-rays and bw tomorrow.

Thank goodness I got those videos and while it does not capture how bad it was at one point, it demonstrated a lot. AND thank goodness I document all findings from the day they arrive to BHRR for we are seeing some signs of a couple of possibilities that on their own were passed off as other things when examined.

Keep those prayers and blessings flowing!

I LOVE where I work and I love the Vets I work with!!

UPDATE: Thursday November 8th, 2012 @ 9:34 AM:

We are looking at more than one thing. The one Vet confirmed he had a slightly ruptured right eardrum and that has been there long before he came to BHRR.

That does not explains everything, especially with the video and all the documentation I have on him from Day 1 that was once explained by exams as being due to weakness, starvation, neglect, lacking muscles etc. is now being looked at in a different light based upon what happened today.

After Sean updated me, I knew I had to talk to the Vets myself and forwarded on the one video and then had a long chat. A great conversation.

So, he is on his meds for his eardrum and antibiotics – and there is no sign of any ear infection – no redness, scratching, shaking of the head yet he was put on them due to this finding of that slight rupture they believe he has.

I want to be proactive and do bw and the Vet was in total agreement with that and the x-rays under sedation to start.

I love how they work with people and the animals and are not afraid to resource pool and investigate and even say 'we do not know' yet we are going to work to figure things out. :)

They are stumped yet; are working hard to help him!

UPDATE: Sean says that by the time he reached the Hospital with BHRR's Canvas, he was walking even better than when Sean first arrived home which is a heck of a lot better than when BHRR's Canvas first woke up. He was stumbling and could barely stand let alone walk.

His weight was a wobbling 102.74 pounds. Hard to get an accurate weight on him with his balance. AT least it is going up!

Will update more as I can…………………

BHRR's Canvas needs your prayers. He was perfectly fine this AM and playing and normal and he took his usual mid-morning nap by my side as I have been working on my laptop in bed and just now he went to get up and it is like he has had something akin to a stroke.

Of balance, confused, stumbling. His pupils are normal right now and though, his eyes are worried, there is nothing 'off'.

He was right by me the whole time and I would have noticed a seizure. There was no sounds, nothing. No signs of distress, discomfort, cries nothing.

Sean is rushing him to KAH. Please keep him in your thoughts. 🙁

Not sure if it is a stroke or sudden onset vesibular disease – BUT he is really young! or what this is.

HIs head wants to bog/tilt to the right ore than normal.

He also is understanding what I am saying to him.

He still wags his tail at me.

In preparation in having to do some emergency fundraising for BHRR's Autumn's ever growing mounting bills that shall include having several surgeries, we are going to be offering up  a small  BHRR's Autumn's EMERGENCY Online Auction

Auction details and how to bid can be found HERE – ITEMS can be added at any time – so, please check back!

Starts 6:00 AM EST on Monday October 29th, 2012
Ends 10:00 PM EST on Monday November 5th, 2012

NOTE: BHRR's Autumn's EMERGENCY ONLINE AUCTION does not replace our 5th ANNUAL 'JUST IN TIME FOR XMAS' ONLINE Auction to commence on Saturday November 24th, 2012!

From Friday October 19th to Sunday November 4th inclusive, BHRR will not be open for adoptions or the intake of adoption applications.

Here is one VIDEO taken on Friday October 19th, at night – dark and poor lighting with the angle. BUT you can see that BHRR's Canvas after only being at BHRR for just a few hours has his tail up and wagging! AND a cameo appearance is being made by BHRR's Jetta & BHRR's Blossom.

I took a great long video yesterday and ugh! I accidentally deleted it! 🙁 The weather looks good for tomorrow and so, I shall try again!

Below are some photos of BHRR's Canvas taken yesterda, October 22nd, 2012. It really is hard to truly capture how bad his body condition is(the same goes for BHRR's Autumn).

AND he looks better than he did on Friday.

I am having a hard time also capturing BHRR's Autumn, who also came in last week, emaciated/neglected and full of infection and growths etc. frown

It is important for people to understand that this type of abuse is out there, even closer than they may realise/think and we must work together to effect positive change for those that cannot speak and defend themselves.

This is why BHRR is here, to help special needs dogs like them. AND we cannot do it without the support of our believers and I reach out in THANKS again to each of you! smile

BHRR's Canvas – October 22nd, 2012

It is sad to see any dog in this type of emotional and physical state and though, not the most urgent of situations we have ever seen at BHRR, he is a dog that has been truly broken down….the poor sweet boy. frown frown Very tragic…..

He is about 35+ pounds underweight(he is only 96.92 pounds), has diarrhea, is not yet housebroken and is already integrated with all the dogs but four! 🙂 Even BHRR's Dozer! WTG! BHRR's Dozer! 🙂

He has tons of potential, a really lovely boy and I have all the time in the world for him to have the patience, consistency and structure he needs to flourish and I look forward in posting updates and photos and videos of his rehab. process! I cannot thank those involved enough…..AGAIN for entrusting another to our care/hearts!

Despite how starved he has been, he took the chicken I gave him on the way home very gently and was a wonderful, if slightly quiet co-pilot!

Sean feels strongly about naming him and he has wanted to call him BHRR's Canvas for several reasons and he really is a beautiful canvass that just needs the right 'light' and 'touches' to be a masterpiece to home and community! smile

I am trying to find some cube large tube body pillows to line the sides of the colossal crate as his body is so emaciated. – I have two already:

one is 47" long, 10" height and 12" wide

one is 55" long, 12" height and 14" wide

As of Saturday October 20th, I have set-up a file set-up for him at Kanata Animal Hospital for those that may wish to contribute to his Vet Care:

BHRR's Canvas with Rescue Angel – Vivian! – Friday October 19th, 2012 @ KAH

He is NOW on his way! He is safely with Fiona's mummy and LOOK at that collar she got from Crazy Beautiful! STUNNING on him! THANK YOU!

UPDATE Below From Fiona's Mummy – Just before Noon October 19th:

"He is very scared of people. Head lowered as he looks up you. So skittish he has to be double leashed.

Very big (long and tall). Painfully skinny. I gasped when I first saw him. He slept to our first stop. I look back to check on him. All I see are ribs and a spine.

I had not had breakfast so I stopped at a pit stop in Hudson. I got an bacon and egg English muffin at Eggcellent. I got him one. We are now best friends! I almost got a kiss. Now he is up and is looking out the front and is smelling my hair. He is relaxing. He is afraid but is looking for someone to cling to.

He's gorgeous, or as Fiona would goygeous! Real stunner. He is sweet. He is insecure.

As soon as I start the car, he will fall asleep again.

I told him about Birch Haven. He doesn't believe me…"

We stepped up to commit to him as we had a GD under a possible pending adoption and BHRR's Cobalt is NOW ADOPTED and shall be heading to his forever loving home on Sunday October 21st, 2012. This has given us the spot to assist another in need.

Sean came up with the name 'Canvas' and it really does suit him. He is a beautiful 'canvas' that with the right 'touches' and 'light', he is going to be a stunning masterpiece asset to home and community.

We mobilized fast and he arrived to BHRR today. 🙂 THANKS to Fiona's mummy for the assistance with his transport to get him closer to me today! 🙂

On Monday October 15th, we were contacted to assist an approximate 12 -15 month old Mantle male Great Dane. This is what I was sent:

"This is the saddest dog I have seen in a long time. FREAKED OUT. I will send videos-they will make you cry.  Male, weighs about 125 pounds-vets couldn't examine/vaccinate-too stressed."

Also, story is the owner had the dog for 1 year.  Lived with another dog and a cat.  Never been with kids.  Owner is feeding Purina and cannot afford the dog and that is why the dog is being surredered.  He is also crate trained, loves to sleep on the couch.  Owner did say dog is timid but not aggressive.  X tested the dog and infact there is no aggression but more of a fright/flight."

He was neutered by the shelter on Tuesday and given his Vaccines. He shall require a booster. He was also microchipped.

Two photos below are from when he was at the Shelter.
