On Thursday April 25th, after several attempts over the past while to try to meet BHRR's Riley's former temp foster home in person – their schedules and mine have just not aligned 🙁 – I sent them an email updating them on BHRR's Riley. I had wanted to visit with them and like to do all things so hard, in person rather than over email or phone.

BHRR's Riley has been back at BHRR since February and I had the very difficult task of crossing him over very recently due to health issues – Cancer.

I held him in my arms, sobbing and weeping……….I did not want to post anything publicly until I had a chance to talk to the home that had temp fostered him so very wonderfully for many months once he was ready to be placed up for adoption and I also connected with his other temp foster home(the amazing home that temp fostered him while I was away in March of 2012 for a week or so while I had to be away).

I also messaged the person who originally messaged me about assisting him back in November of 2011 to update them.

I wanted to touch base with all those that loved him the way my home does before updating his blog and sharing his immense loss publicly…..

I have loved this boy since I was first contacted to assist him. I am convinced he was related to BHRR's Mr. Parker Paws…just convinced. As were several others!

He went from emaciated and stressed to one HECK of a dog at BHRR! His personality was HUGE, MASSIVE, ENORMOUS! His coat became so glossy and shiny and healthy. He was such a GOOFBALL! My home is so empty…hollow even….the dogs quieter, a hole larger than the grand canyon is in our hearts and home over his loss. He learned so much with his obedience and manners and he had a style ALL 'RILEYS'…..

The using of our BHRR's FREEDOM DANE Adele as an obstacle course, the trying to leap through open windows in a single bound, the way he leaned into me with such 'whole body affection', how meeting BHRR's Cobalt each day was like meeing a whole NEW amazing friend over and over(like BHRR's Mr. Parker Paws and BHRR's Mazda), putting his feet on the counter in the kitchen to drink from the tap, how his butt would sit in a nanosecond when BHRR's Dana(GOD! My heart still bleeds over her loss) called 'ICE CUBE' time and I could go on and on and on with all my favourite memories, times and moments with this boy! 🙁

After being with me at BHRR for over 7 months, on June 4th, 2012 until February 12th, 2013, he was temp fostered and they adored him and vice versa. Then he was back with me as of February. So, between his temp foster home and my own, he has spent equal time and while he may have gone through his rehab and training and vetting at BHRR, he was adored NO less by his temp foster home. They are as upset and devastated as my own home is.

EVERY loss hurts….it does not get easier. 🙁

RIP dear BHRR's Riley and the date that I write this post is also the same day that I said good-bye to another beloved dog that I have held in my arms since they were mere weeks of age…… 🙁

A candle sent to me from BHRR's Riley's former temp foster home – Bruce/Holly
They said that he is now with BHRR's Concert and that made me just weep all over again….. 🙁
This is the same candle they said that they lit when our precious BHRR's Concert crossed over
HE so wuved her! He was the biggest flirt…..he always did love the ladies….

BHRR's Riley has settled back into BHRR life very well!

His bff's are BHRR's Gretta, BHRR's Spice and the new addition of BHRR's Salma…

AND he is so taken with our male EM Guinness…follows him everywhere! LOL I think he believes that Guinness is uber famous or something and is a huge fan of him! LOL

BHRR's Riley is BACK at BHRR.

THANK YOU again to his temp foster home for loving on him all these past months!

His weight was 53.30 KGs(117.26 pounds). Still putting on that weight and muscle YET LOOKING GOOD! 🙂

He has soooooooooooooo many new doggies to meet since he was last here in the summer of 2012!

One thing that has not changed is that he is still a bit particular about his male friends and still does not understand my Bleach and now my Drift(Both SN's GD's).

He is loving the girls! LOL He remains a gooberhead and we shall begin the slow integration with all the new young males here tomorrow.

He just does not understand that he is such a nut that when he plays rough, the males want to play rough back and then he gets worried and can take some offense and then the other males get confused and then all stand around confused and unsure with looks of 'what do we all do now!' LOL

GOOF!

WELCOME BACK TO BHRR my BBBBB! 🙂

GOSH! He is one stunning dog!!! JUST stunning! 🙂

BHRR's Riley is headed back to BHRR on February 12th, 2013.

The incredible folks at La Maison Du Chien have kindly offered to donate $1100 worth of pet food to a deserving area rescue!

BHRR is currently in FIRST place by ONLY ONE VOTE…….AND as always, we would share with any other r/q groups in need……ALWAYS! We believe in working together to help as many animals as possible!

We do not have a regular food sponsor for donations of food and the cost of food per month can be over $4,000.

Thank you in advance for any consideration………

UPDATE Wednesday December 12th, 2012:

BHRR has slipped to SECOND place and this contest end Sunday just before Midnight! Please vote and share! 🙂

UPDATE Sunday December 16th, 2012:

UPDATE ON VOTING CONTEST:

As many are aware from the public blanket statement posts I was making, as soon as I understood what was able to really occur with the voting in the food contest, I contacted MDB. This was not resulting in a fair contest to all r/q Rescues involved.

We have been in conversation for the last few days re: this contest and per the positioning of BHRR, we will only wish to operate with continued integrity plus honesty and no food is worth any compromising of that.

Either we all are able to vote once a day, only ever once, or multiple times daily. What was happening was not equal or fair to all involved. BHRR and it was so important that MDB be made aware of what was happening.

I am aware that they did a reset a couple of days ago to try and have people being able to only vote once every 24 hours and some could and others still could not vote again.

We have continued to support MDB in any successful resolution they felt was necessary and per their public post today, they have decided to do a reset from scratch – starting over.

I thank EACH of our supporters and believers that have campaigned so hard to assist the animals of BHRR and in sharing! 🙂 No words can tell you how much this has meant to BHRR for we do go through 120 POUNDS of dog food PER DAY.

AND good luck to all participating for round two!

BHRR's 5th ANNUAL "JUST IN TIME FOR XMAS" Online Auction is ON NOW UNTIL Thursday December 6th @ 9:00 PM EST!

We currently have 122 very exciting items up for grabs! MORE being added throughout the last day of this auction! 🙂

All monies raised shall go to the care of animals in need of BHRR and also assist the two new Saint Bernards headed our way!

BHRR does not adopt out during the XMAS season due to our position that it is not in the best interest of a new addition being added during such a busy, exciting and somewhat stressful time for many. Our XMAS Shutdown period for this year is from Saturday December 15th, 2012 to Monday January 7th, 2013 inclusive.

In preparation in having to do some emergency fundraising for BHRR's Autumn's ever growing mounting bills that shall include having several surgeries, we are going to be offering up  a small  BHRR's Autumn's EMERGENCY Online Auction

Auction details and how to bid can be found HERE – ITEMS can be added at any time – so, please check back!

Starts 6:00 AM EST on Monday October 29th, 2012
Ends 10:00 PM EST on Monday November 5th, 2012

NOTE: BHRR's Autumn's EMERGENCY ONLINE AUCTION does not replace our 5th ANNUAL 'JUST IN TIME FOR XMAS' ONLINE Auction to commence on Saturday November 24th, 2012!

From Friday October 19th to Sunday November 4th inclusive, BHRR will not be open for adoptions or the intake of adoption applications.

We do not adopt out around the Halloween season and many others Rescues, shelters, pounds etc. have also begun to follow a similar protocol.

We do not believe it is in the best interest of the animals in our program, especially for dark coloured dogs.

During this time, BHRR is available 24/7 as always for requests for assistance of animals in need.

UPDATE: From BHRR's Riley's AWESOMEFIED Temp FosterMom. I booked his annual for today:

"BHRR Riley's vet appointment went really well. Everyone commented on how great he looked. Dr.Zak was really impressed with how shinny his coat is and his body condition.

His new weight was 51.9kg(114.18 pounds) which surprisingly isn't much of a weight increase 🙁 He is looking so much better and even people on the walk we re commenting on how good he was looking. We will continue to work on it though, he is eating lots and regularly so the weight gain will come.

BHRR's Riley and I had a great day though. Started off with meeting Bruce and my mom for lunch at Extreme Pita, then off to KAH for his appointment. Then we made a detour on the way home to St. Albert's cheese factory. We enjoyed some ice cream and got some cheese curds for snack after dinner 🙂

Oh I also picked up Novembers Revolution."

***For any of our approved temp foster homes, BHRR covers all the bills, you just provide the loving home environment and so, if any of our approved Temp Foster Homes are in a position to temp foster, let us know! contactbhrr@gmail.com We are full right now and even with temp foster homes, we will not be taking in any new additions until we have more adoptions!***

BHRR's Riley is doing very well in his temp foster home!

I have a video that I took of him not that long ago plus an update to post from his temp foster home.

He ALSO rocked it at our latest GD & Honourary GD walk/hole last weekend!! AND I mean ROCKED it! We were almost 25 people and close to 20 dogs and he was fabu!!

His annual has been scheduled for October 19th and looking forward to his new weight!!

Thank you to his temp foster home for to giving him such a great experience and he lives with two other dogs, a cat plus a pot belly pig!

He continues to wait very patiently for his new forever loving home to find him!

BHRR's Riley – enjoying cottage life! – Summer 2012
*photos courtesy of Bruce & Holly

HERE is the album on FB that I have been creating for BHRR's Concert and her incredible life of adventures and dreams fulfilled!

With how much I have on my plate these days, it is going to be very hard for me to post a blog here and posts/updates there, so I shall keep the link to her photo album current on her blog for people to virtually be a part of her living LIFE to the fullest!

This is BHRR's Concert's 6th journal entry of her my wish for her 'warmth and love from caring people', a celebration of the life that she is going to be living for as long as we can give it to her in quality!

UPDATE: September 9th, 2012 – BHRR's Riley(AVAILABLE FOR ADOPTION!) & BHRR's Concert:

Today was suppose to be cottage day at a friends place yet; with the hail and severe thunderstorms last night; all the progress we made back to happy and comfortable(from last Tuesday rain and icky weather) including as posted recently – zooming!! – went downhill.

AND despite the sunshine that dawned bright and cherry today; BHRR's Concert was just not up to headed out. So, she rested, soaked up all the BHRR love and as the day passed her spirits picked up and she was then up to visiting with Holly & Bruce tonight.

She had a nice visit; loved going up with great enthusiasm ( much to my own dismay) their stairs both inside and outside!! 🙂 So, she zipped up them and went down them and zipped up and went down.

She quickly found a very BIG (figuratively and literally) male admirer at their home, to the point that I sincerely thought he would pout for days when she did not exactly feel the same about his charm and flirtaticious nature!! LOL BHRR's Riley(AVAILABLE for adoption btw!) LOVED her, no…..actually he ADORED her!

Shared her bed, brought her toys, nudged and kissed her, play bowed, danced and pranced around her and in the end, he realised that it was love not returned and settled for laying on her bed with her! LOL Where she went, he wanted to go!! LOL

Thank you Holly and Bruce for the few hours, lovely conversation, caring hands and soothing aura of your home – amidst the clown BHRR's Riley!

He was even so kind as to bring me my shoes!!

We had a a pit stop at a Wendy's for BHRR's Concert to have some chicken and then made the 40 minute remainder drive home!

Kanata Animal Hospital (613) 836-2848 and they will take Visa, M/C and AMEX over the phone under the account of 'Birch Haven Rescue' for 'Concert'. They will take Debit or Cash in person at 440 Hazeldean Road in Kanata, Ontario

UPDATE from BHRR's Riley's Temp Foster home sent today:

Riley has been eating great !  He is eating three times a day, he eats more in the evening feeding then the others but at least he always seems to be interested in the food.
On the nights he has been really active outside, he gobbles up his evening feeding and keeps licking the bowl like he can't get enough LOL

Oh I also must say that I am loving all the extra cuddles, he is quite the affectionate boy.  Everyone that meets him has commented on how gentle is his, not to mention handsome!

That is great!  The three meal time are working out well with him, I will add some more food his way 🙂

Him and Neffie have become quite the play buddies.  I got a huge laugh on Sunday as Riley managed to knock Neffie into the side of our mini pool (soft blow up one).  This ended up soaking Neffie from head to tail LOL  The look on her face was priceless.

I've also been trying to get a decent picture of him, but he is too quick most of the time.

Here are some updates from BHRR's Riley's temp foster home!

UPDATE: June 5th, 11:07 AM

Hi Gwen,

Here is a mini update on BHRR's Riley:
-he has settled in well, is getting along with the 2 dogs
– he has met the cat, after being reminded to be gentle they have come to an understanding that the cat is boss LOL
– he loves to fetch and play ball, well just run in general, he is a very energetic boy and it loving the open backyard.
– he ate some dinner 🙂 only about 4 or 5 mouthfuls but still something.
– slept great and settled well in his crate
– he ignored breakfast, so hopefully after work I can get him interested 🙂

Oh and I have put a towel under the water dish 🙂 he reminds me of Lily Belle with his drinking LOL

UPDATE: June 5th, 2012, 12:58 PM

Hi,

OMG he is hilarious to watch in the backyard, zip and zooming.  Him and Neffie have gotten into a few good runs, YAY tired puppies 🙂
He is very respectful of the cats space, he is so curious and just loves to watch her.

Now to work on the eating!!

UPDATE: June 5th, 2012, 4:28 PM

Omg he is eating, he almost finished six cups 🙂  Will give him more later since he didn't eat breakfast.

But wahoo!!

BHRR's Riley was dropped off to his temp foster home yesterday.

He is going to have two lovely other doggies to play with and we want him to keep EATING! EATING! AND EATING! 😀 His coat is so shiny and glossy; yet; as a growing boy; and one that came to BHRR very painfully thin and emaciated; he still needs to put on more weight.

I have finally find the combination in how to feed him, when to feed him and what to feed him that seems to be working since Easter.

He will ONLY eat the RC Giant Junior or RC Giant Puppy food. He will ONLY eat if you first place food in Drift's crate and also feed BHRR's JS first including BHRR's Shiva(they all eat near him) AND he will ONLY eat if you give him a partial bowl first and then as everyone else eats such as BHRR's Potter, BHRR's Hailey and BHRR's Maggie May; you can give him more.

He is eating fairly reliably about 8 cups a day. I want and need him to eat 12-15 cups right now. Better than he was; WAY better; yet; still a ways to go. I cannot believe some days that he has put on over 30 pounds for he still has another 20-25 pounds to go. He just keeps getting taller and finally growing into that beautiful noggin' of his! LOL

He will remain with his temp foster home until at least the June BHRR 'EXPERIENCE' Mini Open House and as we have three applications that we are currently reviewing for adoptions; he may come back to BHRR then or a bit later. With the intake of BHRR's Rose & BHRR's Petal plus what we are assisting BHRR's Hailey and BHRR's Emma through right now; this is the perfect thing for him to be doing. HE has way too much fun and there are way too many distractions and he is WAY not interested enough in eating. AND the amount that he plays and burns off is incredible. He is a high maintenance, energy, life loving, uber affectionate gooberhead boy! 🙂

I am going to miss him….I miss them all. 🙂

BHRR's Riley shall be returning to BHRR on Wednesday March 21st after having a great time at his temp foster home! His temp foster home has had a fabu time with him and completely agrees that this boy is not for the inexperienced! 😉 AND, after a bit of a bump in the begininng with him not wanting to eat at their home; he has picked up the eating and YAY! YAY! YAY! I cannot wait to get a new weight on him!!!

He has proven to be wonderful with all in his temp foster home; from the kids to the kittens/cats and has been such a great matched fit for their other GD! I have loved receiving the updates and just as with my home; he did decide a window jump and took out their screen.

This boy might want to try agility; yet; I would worry with his clumsiness that he might seriously hurt himself!!!

I have been sent photos of him helping their little girl dig in the sandbox, laying by her side as she swings on her swingset; bringing the members of the house his 'signature' big sticks and so much more! WHAT a hoot and a riot he continues to be!!! 😀

So, the big kid is still the big kid and he was very mindful of his manners when his temp foster home laid down the law. I can just imagine his facial expression with the 'it was worth a shot trying!' LOL

BHRR`s Riley went to his temp foster home last night and BHRR`s Cobalt shall head to his own temp foster home on Thursday AM. 🙂

I have heard that BHRR`s Riley is settling in well to his new temp foster home other than for the one thing I really want to see him do better; eating!!!!

UPDATE: $106.75 DONATED TO DATE

BHRR shall be expanding our adoption area as of April 1st, 2012. Our new adoption area shall include Halifax, N.S. plus the immediate surrounding area – within 2 hours of Halifax, N.S.

This is Phase 1 of our 5 year adoption expansion area plan.

In order for homes to be approved to adopt; all of our current thorough adoption criteria must be met.

BHRR's Riley shall be temp fostered from March 7th to March 21st inclusive.

I am hoping that during this time, he will EAT better! The distractions are just wicked for him here and just as with BHRR's DBB Mudslide and BHRR's Veteran, eating is not as big of a priority over playing and more playing and hanging out! 😉

I am going to miss him yet he shall be in excellent hands!

HERE is the CBC Ottawa Morning radio interview with Anna, myself & BHRR’s Journey that was live/aired on Monday February 13th, 2012! It was re-aired at 5:40 AM on Tuesday February 14th, 2012

The belief in Journey is so warming to feel plus see and once again from my own heart; THANK you to each and every one for helping her!!! I am and remain wonderfully overwhelmed and humbled deeply by such gifts of money and material goods given to her cause!

I have spent a good part of my AM answering emails, discussing what BHRR does, how BHRR does what we do, that we operate out of our home and those of our approved temp foster homes, why BHRR is so successful at what we do plus deeply thanking everyone for the continued support!

Education is so key and BHRR’s Journey continues to teach many about forgiveness, trust, giving, acceptance plus determination!

She is scheduled to head back to the Vet at KAH on Friday February 17th for a recheck on that tail, possible vaccines and another fecal! GO JOURNEY GO!

AND Anna, I am still in awe and inspired by your generous and giving soul!!!

I also finally was able to hear the interview myself! 😉

BHRR's Journey's article in The Ottawa Citizen.

A heartfelt touching warm story of a community being brought together by a GD who was in urgent need and how inspirational, beautiful their supportive efforts including those of Anna with her incredible WOW YUMMY Fundraising Biscuit idea to help save this special GD has been!

AND, Journey is bombing along in her rehabilitation and come April, she should be ready to be placed up for adoption!

SO many believed in you Journey and so many LOVE you!!! YOU are worthy, deserving and no less important than any other dog! 🙂

Some errors including that almost $3,000 in private donations have been sent not $1,000 to date; BHRR is not located in Oxford Mills; Journey is a 'she' not a he plus some of the timeline in the story is in error. BUT, a lovely article overall! 🙂

A COPY OF THIS ARTICLE IS BELOW:

OTTAWA — When she heard the story of Journey – the emaciated Great Dane found on Highway 401 just before Christmas, close to starvation and covered in bite wounds – Anna Gray-Henschel embarked on a journey of her own. She knew she had to do something to help, but she couldn't have imagined that, more than a month later, she would have baked 20,000 dog biscuits to raise money for his care.

As a dog lover, owner of two Great Danes and someone who recently decided to volunteer at rescue shelters, Gray-Henschel came up with the idea of baking some of her own dogs' favourite cheddar cheese and bacon biscuits and selling them to raise money. The idea had worked when her employer, the RCMP, held fundraising campaigns, so why not try to augment her personal donation toward the poor dog's care? Her goal was to bake 100 dozen and sell them for $3 a dozen. She would then donate all $300 of the proceeds to Birch Haven Rescue and Rehabilitation Services in Oxford Mills, where Journey was convalescing.

Several weeks later, that 100 dozen has become 1,667 dozen and she still has orders for 167 dozen more. By day, she's a director general in the RCMP's national security criminal investigations branch, and every evening she bakes for four hours. Weekends she puts in 12-hour days by the oven.

"My husband has been joking about our hydro bill," she said. "But he's not really complaining."

When she's not baking, she's delivering the biscuits. By the time she fills all her orders, she will have raised $5,600 toward the dog's extensive vet bills, which will likely top $8,000 and include at least one more surgery. If the orders keep coming, she'll keep baking, providing shipping (when necessary), delivery and the baking supplies at her own expense. She hopes to raise $6,000 by Valentine's Day.

"It's just one thing and it's not a big deal, but it shows you can have a huge impact if you do your little thing," she said. "It's such a small thing to do to help rehabilitate this beautiful dog. It's hard to believe someone would do this to her."

The response to Journey's story has been amazing, said Gwendilin Boers, an animal behaviour specialist (she's a PhD candidate in the subject) who runs the shelter and works part-time at the Kanata Animal Hospital.

"We were shocked by her condition," Boers said. "We see some terrible things in rescue, but she's one of the worse cases I have seen in my 16 years of running the rescue."

Journey weighed 74 pounds when a Great Dane at her age should weigh between 110 and 115 pounds. She had fleas, pieces of her ear tips missing, open bite wounds all over her body, a broken tail, frostbite, hypothermia, dehydration and round worms. Boers suspects she was abused. "She was in tragic shape, to say the least."

Boers said the community support had been all the more impressive coming, as it did, just after Christmas.

Journey was brought to the rescue one day after she was found by a Good Samaritan in the freezing rain on the highway near Brockville.

"I'm beyond touched," Boers said, adding that people such as Gray-Henschel had eased the worries about how they would be able to pay the extensive vet bills associated with Journey's recovery. In addition to those who have contributed to the biscuits campaign, private donations have totalled more than $1,000.

"Journey has been a Christmas miracle," Boers said. "She has met every obstacle she has had to overcome with grace and good temperament. She's a very loving dog who has brought so many people together in the spirit of giving. Anna's contribution is just wonderfully overwhelming."

Boers thought it would be June before Journey would be ready for adoption, but, given her progress so far – she now weighs close to 100 pounds – she estimates it will be mid-April.

Donations are being accepted through the Kanata Animal Hospital or by email transfer to gwen@birchhaven.org. Birch Haven Rescue and Rehabilitation is accepting donations through PayPal.

In honor of Gwennie, the Founder of BHRR,  all of us are wishing her a most wonderful and special of birthdays today – February 3rd!

As we have done for the last 2 years as a surprise for Gwennie; if you believe in BHRR; enjoy all the blog updates, pictures, open houses, GD hikes, Gwennie novel posts, her educational articles plus links; please make a donation in support of her rescue efforts.

This fundraiser shall run through until 11:59 PM today – Friday February 3rd, 2012

This blog post was made without Gwennie's awareness as we have managed to do in the past and we hope that once again, she shall be pleasantly surprised!

You can help ease her stress and worries somewhat today about always worrying about money for food to help those in need of the BHRR programs. You can help ease her stress and worries somewhat today about coming up with funds for food by either donating a bag of food or making a donation for food to be bought. You can help ease her stress and worries somewhat today about the mounting food bills for BHRR for beside Vet Bills, this is BHRR's biggest expense.

Together let's make that BHRR 'chain of success' for Gwennie even more strong today!

Email transfer to gwen@birchhaven.org or via PayPal (account gwen@birchhaven.org) OR even bring a bag of food or cash donation to the upcoming BHRR Open House to help BHRR out! As Gwennie states so often, there is no amount too small.

Several of us approached Gwennie again this year to ask what she wanted for her birthday and once again never did she mention anything for herself. Always her family, friends or the animals.

Please do help us make a birthday very special today for a very special lady who operates a very special Rescue by making a food donation to BHRR.

Total Raised to Date$905 + 6 bags of food

Today's FREEDOM Dane update comes from 'Freedom'. Sean and I have been seriously wondering if some of these dogs have a voice. We have yet to hear a peep from Gretta and Peanut and only recently have we heard a sound from Adele( that was when BHRR's Riley thought she would make a great 'jump' obstacle and had jumped over her once and was headed back to try it again and he tripped in typical Riley fashion and bumped the 'Queen'. She made her first ever grumpy sound).

Well today, I was doing a bit of training with Ms. Dynamite aka Bloom and I heard this sound from the kitchen. Never having heard that voice; I went to investigate and here was Freedom wagging his tail slightly( that is so exciting unto itself!!!) looking at the dishwasher and doing a playbow!!! A real playbow and he was barking! AND just what exactly was he barking at! His reflection in the dishwasher! He was really hoping that the handsome dude he saw was going to play with him!
Awwwwww….

When I came in, he looked over his shoulder and was happy! Like he found a new friend!
We will work on the barking….BUT he does have a voice and was comfortable enough to use it!!! AND some tail wags AND a playbow. Those are the important things!!!

Another good day at BHRR! 🙂

BHRR's Riley is having his one-on-one special date on Saturday! I will be out tomorrow for a wee bit doing picnic shopping! How exciting!

I hope to also obtain a new weight on him.

He continues to be a huge gooberhead in many ways, yet he is so treat and praise motivated that his butt can sit in a nanosecond in attention!

He also felt recently that he wanted to try and do another door jump and this time in the opposite direction and managed to clear all but one foot and down he went and then right back up he went and on his merry way he wanted to go. I had to stop him to go over him to make sure that he did not get any booboos.

He is still a huge ladies man and he loves BHRR's Dana and BHRR's Journey the most. BHRR's Dana has matured a lot since her arrival to us and just gives him the 'look' and then saunters away! HA!

BHRR's Journey can play in short bursts with BHRR's Riley and that thrills him to no end. BUT, it puts BHRR's Goliath into a pouting mood for he wants to be BHRR's Journey's 'main man'…..the soap opera!

He is so much FUN! AND is settling down really well and there are only rare moments of house rumbling between him and BHRR's Lincoln for I just tell them 'take it outside' and off they go! What a pair!

He is thriving under the calm effective leadership here and has so much potential!

I have added photos to his slideshow and am going to add three below. One of his 'true' ham personality and two of how 'serious' he can be for the right motiviation – TREATS AND PRAISE! He is very eager to please and as he better understands more and  more what is and is not appropriate, my goodness; he is such a fantabulous boy all around!!! I never wish to see him lose that ham side of him! It makes him so special. 🙂

The way he leans into me with such affection almost takes me off balance and you have to brace to be able to fully appreciate all the love he has to offer and not end up on your rump! 😀

BHRR's Riley – December 24th, 2011 – Our traditional Christmas Eve Photos! Isn't he bootiful! 🙂

BHRR's Riley is NOW AVAILABLE FOR ADOPTION!!!

More later today with a blog update and photos! 🙂

BHRR's Riley shall have his special 1-on-1 date on Saturday January 14th!!! SO excited for him!

I cannot wait to also get a new weight on this man. Come early January, he shall be placed up for adoption.

The most fascinating thing is that his BESTEST of best friends in the whole world is BHRR's Lincoln! WHO would have thunk it!!! They are so different in many ways; yet they are very attached to each other. You have goober head zippy clown man BHRR's Riley and then you have slow methodical calm and rational BHRR's Lincoln! Their play styles are sooooooo different but they make it work and they will spend hours upon hours together playing and snuggling.

Should one of them not be adopted early into the new year; we might have to seriously consider having them adopted as a pair for they are sooooooooooooooooooo bonded to each other already. We have very rarely done this in our almost 16 year history of operating; yet; I can see that this might be a possibility should neither one be adopted in early 2012.

BHRR's Riley also is such a 'ladies' man….just prancing(until he falls flat on his face as he trips on those big ol' clumper feet or long giraffe legs of his!) and proudly(if that is even possibly for goofman to act! AND wait until you see one of his 'takes' for our traditional XMAS photos! HA!) strutting himself around them! AND the girls are very emphatically not impressed! 😉

HE is such a HOOT! AND while very similiar to whom we have to believe is a close relative of his BHRR's Mr. Parker Paws; he is his own very distinct boy and has an 'edge' that BHRR's Mr. Parker Paws never had. This boy has a tough side to him, an edge/spine that his past/background has made him to be this way and it is sad. 🙁

If push comes to shove; he will stand his ground. AND while he may look silly and goofy doing it; we do not allow it to escalate. Any new home must understand that he cannot feel threatened by another dog for it can stress him; depending on the dog. So many people have met my Bleach and my TAIN and both make him a bit worried at times. AND for those that have met my two boyz; they are teddybear marshmallows yet they exude something that when the play gets escalated, that makes him a bit worried at times. AND BHRR's Cobalt and he are always trying to figure out who is going to be top dog of the day. BHRR's Riley keeps forgetting who is higher in the rank and poor BHRR's Cobalt is always having to remind him….that it is not BHRR's Riley and then BHRR's Riley is off running and playing and no worries.

How BHRR's Riley is with BHRR's Cobalt is similar in a way to how BHRR's Mr. Parker Paws was/is with BHRR's Mazda. EVERY day he saw her; it was like seeing a whole new dog and he was just so thrilled and excited to make her acquaintance. AND this is how BHRR's Riley is with BHRR's Cobalt; each and every day; it is like he sees BHRR's Cobalt for the very first time and they start from scratch. I think BHRR's Cobalt thinks BHRR's Riley might be missing a screw or two; in a loveable way of course! 😉

He is gently and firmly reassured and re-directed when he has moments of 'edginess' and he is then off doing the next crazy thing on his list…..well, I am not sure he even has a list as he lives so much in the moment and planning is not his strength. I am sure BHRR's Dana just rolls her eyes at him for she is very methodical, thorough and every antic is well thought out and planned! BHRR's Riley is more the 'on the spot' impulsive sort! HA!

He has been sooooooo much flippin' fun to have here! Never a dull moment and full of sweet affectionate loving personality that Sean says that sometimes he feels like he needs protective armor for it does not take much for BHRR's Riley to feel encouraged to play! AND that usually means some major GD leaning and body bumping and pushing and loving! 🙂

We already know that we would like to see BHRR's Riley in a home with at least one other right matched personality fit dog. Should the home not already have a dog; then we want to be assured that there is a strong enough network in place for BHRR's Riley to have lots of doggie friends via friends, family and neighbours to be social with.

He will do well in a home that are not couch potatoes themselves. A home that is active yet not overly so; for he likes his quiet in front of the fireplace and relaxing inside moments too.

A home that will be focused and committed to his continued obedience per our mandatory obedience clause.

His future forever loving home can be a pt, ft. flex hour, work from home, semi-retired or retired home. He is very versatile that way and as long as the home integrates well; he will not develop and SA behavours.

At this time, we would not recommend a home with cats or small dogs for he is all puppy love and still learning how to be gentle and not to splat others in his exuberance.

If the home has children, they really should be 8+.

We still crate him for his own safety and that of our home for he still has puppy antics. BUT I am proud of him in that he no longer counter surfs or garbage raids. He will occasionally still put his front feet on the kitchen sink so that he can drink from the tap and every once in a while would like to try and jump on the rare soul he wants to actually face kiss eye-to-eye with. BUT all minor offenses and continued correction is being done.

He is a bit of a kllutz, so; his new home will have to be mindful of BHRR's Riley complete disregard of his own safety as he crashes through bushes and trees; thinking they shall part for him…..uhmmm, no, it does not work that way bud! LOL

HE is such a ham!!!

BHRR does not adopt out during the XMAS season due to our position that it is not in the best interest of any new addition being added during such a busy, exciting and somewhat stressful time for many.  Quite a few other Rescues, Shelters, Pounds etc. have also begun to follow a similar protocol to what we have been doing.

Our XMAS Shutdown period for this year is from Saturday December 17th, 2011 to Tuesday January 3rd, 2012 inclusive.

During this time, BHRR is available 24/7 as always for requests for assistance of animals in need.

One of the items up for grabs in our 4th annual 'JUST IN TIME FOR XMAS' Online Auction was a:

1-on-1 Special Date with a BHRR Animal of Choice

The winner of this item has chosen BHRR's Riley to have a very special date with and the monies raised for this winning item $50 will go towards his own rehab bills.

He is looking better and better all the time and we have officially hit 'goob' hood and so we are keeping up with the Gwennie's Doggie Boot Camp and NILIF.

Inside the house, he is WAY too much for BHRR's Atlas yet outside, BHRR's Atlas takes him all in stride. AND for those that have been following BHR's Atlas's blog; you will note JUST what progress this has been for both of these dogs!

He likes to 'push' buttons the monkey man(he received a SS 'Monkey' Collar and it could not be more appropriate!) and even my sweet mild mannered Bleach who is ready to rumble at the drop of a pin; finds him at times 'over the top.' He is just craming life into everything he does and like all those other 'survivor's of such terrible things; he has character, personality and backbone. This boy also just OOOOOOOZES charm! I call him a 'flirt'.

I received a call a few weeks back from the person that had contacted us about him and all the coincidences that surrounded his rescue just as it did with BHRR's Parker Paws just makes one tingle. He had the same name as the daughter of who rescued him, he is from the same area that BHRR's Parker is from, he is SOOOOOOOOOO much like BHRR's Parker Paws it is most likely that they are related in some manner. Just how all the stars seemed to align that he ended up at the same place that BHRR's Mr. Parker Paws did, into the same hands that helped BHRR's Parker Paws, the name thing with them both and how much meaning they have to the Chelsea and the list goes on and on.

We are not sure if he shall be officially placed up for adoption by the time we hit our annual XMAS shutdown period. He has a lot more weight to come and we are now working even more on that obedience and 'head in the clouds' syndrome that he has developed! cheeky THIS is a lot of puppy and not a 'faint of heart' kinda dog for sure….at least not right now…. 😉

AND wow! As his coat comes back in with proper nutrition, shelter and exercise plus a healthy dose of love; it is so glossy, soft and shiny. Sean keeps saying just how super soft he is and I think that BHRR's Riley is at the point that he might want to roll his eyes for I think it actually might embarrass him(if I were to humanize him that is! ). 😀

BHRR's 4TH ANNUAL 'JUST IN TIME' FOR XMAS Online Auction shall begin Saturday November 19th @ 7 AM EST and shall run through until Thursday December 1st @ 9 PM EST.

BHRR's Riley was neutered today and weighed 109.12 pounds(49.6 KGs).

BHRR' Riley's Previous Records

Please find two new photos of him below.

I have a copy of his vaccination history and other medical history now(attached above) and written out below.

September 24th, 2011:

NORMAL
Sept 24/11-1st vaccines/deworming given…DAPP injectable, bordetella intranasal and strongid T

September 28th, 2011:

NORMAL
Sept 28/11 – PE – thin, rec feed BID, rec to rescue; vaccinate Rabies RH SQ EA
Rabvac 1, Serial# 1213194A, Rabies Tag# 11-158

October 4th, 2011:

NORMAL

His vaccines are good for one year and therefore are due September of 2011.

He has been dewormed again at BHRR plus has been given Revolution.

Since his arrival on November 2nd, 2011 to BHRR he has put on 14.12 pounds in just two weeks time. This is very much on track for what we would like to see a dog in his very painfully thin state to be putting on. He needs another 20-25 pounds at this time to go for as he is growing, he is needing to put on more weight to stay in line with what he should be weighing at his age/body structure.

This boy is not going to be a wee thing when he is done maturing.

We still believe he is between 12 months and no more than 15 months of age.

BHRR's Riley – November 2011

BHRR's Riley is scheduled to be neutered on Friday November 18th. IT is time!

AND the more time I spend with him, the more I think that he is a relation to BHRR's Mr. Parker Paws. The mannerisms the both of them share is so uncanny!

He seems to have a bit more brain power than BHRR's Mr. Parker Paws has but barely. 😉

Now, if the day ever comes that he demonstrates BHRR's Mr. Parker Paws famous or rather infamours 'paw' swinging' then I am going to know without a doubt that they are related somehow! LOL

He is such a goof! Better with the humping yet when he gets all excited with the playing(he has been integrated with most of the dogs here); he just starts feeling the 'urge' to love! 😉 PPSS and BHRR's Porridge are not very happy to be the recipients of that love and BHRR's Holden has made it VERY clear he is not going to be BHRR's Riley's 'special' friend! LOL

He is corrected each and every time, he acts like a gooberhead.

The most incredible thing that Sean saw him do; that I was not witness too is that he came running into the the sunroom from outside and actually did a flying leap through the other door spot where we used to have a window….HOLY! AND to ruin the whole spectacular event that it could have been with impressiveness; he caught his two back feet on the edge and well, that is a lot of dog to crash to the ground. AND the monkeyman got right up and wanted back out to do it all over again! OMG! Are you kidding me???? I cannot believe he made it through once, let alone trying to do it twice. The precision that took to do what he did….and obviously he was not too precise for he did not quite clear the edge with his back feet/toes.

My 8 year old daughter said she gave him a 9! HA! HA! My 11 year old said that he would give 10 for originality yet a fail for the execution part. OH my!

BHRR's Riley arrived to BHRR on November 2nd and we were told that he had been given his Rabies at the shelter. Unfortunately, his paperwork did not come with him and we did ask twice to have it faxed over. At this time, we are unaware of what else he received at the shelter yet we shall not be given him any more vaccines or altering him until he is at a much better weight.

He has been given sentinel and has begun a routine deworming protocol that all the dogs that come to BHRR go through with Safeguard or aka Panacur for many.

This boy is at least 25 pounds underweight and I estimate him to be about 15 months of age.

How to sum up his personality, well………..he is a lot like BHRR's Parker Paws and BHRR's Benjamin yet is is very much uniquely BHRR's Riley at the same time! He is a goofy, stick fetching/carrying, thrilled to be digging and humping all the dogs ball of hormones boy! cheekyThere is not one mean bone in this dog's body that I have discovered to date and he has learnt to like his crate. 😉 They all do!

NILIF and Gwennie's Doggie Boot Camp are in full swing! 😉

He is completely housebroken and does not mark in the house. He makes some low whining types of sounds as he is asked to go back into his own crate to learn to love his own company plus to know that his own company is 'ok' in that he does not have to rely on others to comfort and soothe or keep him company. He settles down really well in mere moments.

He is sleeping in a crate at night and we are feeding him up to 5 small meals a day due to his really poor body condition. He has collapsed pasterns and his coat was really dull and flaky upon arrival. Eggs with shells and  some plain white yogurt are serving him very well. He is also getting some wet canned food mixed into his kibble to keep him interested in eating.

He plays a bit rough and has very little manners yet that is because NO one ever spent the time to train him. He will get there.

So much more to update yet after a 15 hour work day, time to get a wee bit of shut eye myself. THANKS for everyone's patience as I recently went through surgery on November 4th and my recovery time over the next 6 weeks minimum shall be time to focus on updating blogs and adding photos. We are still looking into video capabilities to add videos of the dogs to not only our website yet our PetFinder website too. Stay tuned!

We are still plugging away on online adoption and volunteer form options as well plus the ability to view our adoptables on facebook and to download an application. 🙂

Below are two photos to demonstrate JUST how painfully thin this boy really is AND bear in mind that these photos were taken ONE week after his arrival to BHRR. He was much worse upon arrival to BHRR and with other things on our plate; we were unable to get the 'first' photos as we normally try to take of all new arrivals.

Additionally, taking photos of dogs that are dark often do not show up well. This boy is all ribs, hips and spine…. 🙁

Let's make a change with change!!

**Keep in mind that it costs the DMV money every time they process a credit card transaction, and many companies enforce a $5 minimum rule.***

Meet BHRR's Riley – about 18 months max., black with some white Great Dane, male and all goofy SWEETHEART!
In a shelter right now….
Below is what we have been told to date from the person – C. Gibson, animal control officer (same lovely person who asked us to assist BHRR's Mr. Parker Paws) AND apparently, they are similar in temperament SO that means BHRR's Riley is one AMAZING BOY in his own right! 😀

"He's great with other dogs on the leash, and through the kennel. He's just a big dorky puppy (with his testiculars) that wants to play!! He came in as an owner surrender. They bought him off Kijiji, and had him for a week before realizing they hadn't made the best choice in dog breeds. I guess they weren't ready for a big dane puppy. He's really sweet. Needs leash manners, obviously, but he is very workable. He loves Cuzs and Kongs and anything squeaky, and I can stick my whole hand in his mouth for the toy and he gives it up willingly. He reminds me so much of Parker…just a big dork that wants to love."

We have also been informed that he is at least 20+ pounds underweight. 🙁

I shall be making the drive to bring him to BHRR on October 29th.

NOT YET AVAILABLE FOR ADOPTION!

BHRR's Riley – October 2011

From Friday October 21st to Friday November 4th inclusive, BHRR will not be open for adoptions or the intake of adoption applications. We do not adopt out around the Halloween season and many others Rescues, shelters, pounds etc. have also begun to follow a similar protocol to what we have been doing.

We do not believe it is on the best interest of the animals in our program, especially for dark coloured dogs.

During this time, BHRR is available 24/7 as always for requests for assistance of animals in need.
