FREEDOM DANES BHRR's Peanut and BHRR's Cobalt made the long drive on the 13th with me and a BHRR Volunteer to do the hv for a possible adoption.

BOTH did just fantastic in the car as always and BHRR's Cobalt had no space worries at all! Sometimes he can still get a wee bit cranky in the car if there are other dogs to jostle with or in doorways BUT very rarely these days!

BHRR's Cobalt walked into their backyard and home like a rockstar and every home visit and trip I do, this dog just gets better and better and better. HIS obedience is just amazing now! He will even give you a paw so endearingly to entice you to allow him to have more treats! LOL

Either dog would have been a good fit; yet; BHRR's Peanut was the better fit as their first preference was a female, a small GD(BHRR's Cobalt is close to 115 pounds now) and they have a lot of experience working with a dog that needs lots of patience, kindness and slow movements to carry forward on the strong foundation they have achieved to date at BHRR.

BHRR's Cobalt was such a goofy boy in their house, extremely social and neither dog could have cared less for the cat that was there! No issues AT ALL!

So, once again BHRR's Cobalt proves that he is fabu with cats and BHRR's Peanut just did me so proud herself!!! 🙂 She even went up and down their one flight of stairs as she trusted me. She had some troubles with their doorways and that is very commond with these FREEDOM DOGS. While we were talking she preferred laying under their table touching my feet and was calm and quiet and though there was a bit of pacing and panting in the beginning, that subsided and she relaxed as much as she could under all the new surroundings. With the detailed blogs, information package on her sent and the conversations we have had today, they should have optimum success with her.

Leaving her was hard…..yet, this is what I do day in and day out.

GOING to miss you my sweet girl!

AND BHRR's Cobalt your right matched forever loving home is out there! 🙂 I KNOW it is! 🙂

FREEDOM DANE BHRR's Peanut adopted Thursday September 13th!
*What a great 16th anniversary pressie for Sean & I!*

The homevisit for BHRR's Peanut's possible adoption has been scheduled for Thursday September 13th. What better day that my 16th wedding anniversary! LOL

I asked what second choice of canine would they like to see me bring and they chose BHRR's Cobalt. Their third choice would be BHRR's Jetta.

I shall update as I can.

BHRR's Peanut has moved under a PENDING ADOPTION! We shall update her blog as we can. Thanks in advance for your patience.

FREEDOM DANE BHRR's Peanut told me today that she is ready for her new forever loving home. So, she is NOW AVAILABLE FOR ADOPTION!

One that is going to be patient, kind, understanding and lovingly consistent to help her continue along her amazing foundation path developed at BHRR.

She says that she is still shy in new and strange surroundings yet in that right forever matched home, she knows that she shall continue to become more comfortable and brave…..

She will need a very patient, quiet, understanding and lovingly consistent home that will not rush her and will continue to build upon all the storng foundation she has had built up at BHRR; yet; she is ready…

She is shy and yet; when you earn her trust and respect; she is so loving and affectionate and you just cannot walk a straight line as she is always there and she loves to knock you from behind the knees and make your legs give!

She is playful and she will thrive in that right matched forever loving home. One that is not going to push her, yet; expose her slowly to continued wonderful things that life can give her.

She is only going to get better and better here at BHRR and we will work with the home that proves to be the right one for her for continued success!

I am going to miss her though…..she is a real real real gem!

She has had some really good social outings with myself. The car still worries her some and she is quite quiet in new surroundings yet; we shall continue to bring her out and about and have others have playdates and day trips with her to keep her going forward.

She cannot be rushed yet; the world shall be laid at your feet for that right matched forever loving home that is prepared to give her the time she needs plus deserves.

Here is a VIDEO of her very first out of BHRR social date!  Thanks to D. Bird and M. Bird for having us over!!

BHRR's Peanut

COME ON OUT TO SEE US THIS SATURDAY AUGUST 11th @ the Critter Jungle in Ottawa, Ontario!

RAIN OR SHINE! We shall be there! So, bring your dirty dawg and we shall wash plus towel dry for you!

We shall also have some items for sale to help raise much needed funds for the animals in need of BHRR.

AND it looks like the rain is going to be there BUT so shall we! 🙂 We are all going to be wet anyway! 😉

Here is a video taken tonight of some of the BHRR gang and our own. I have spent my day immersed with the animals for maximum dog therapy to try and help soothe my heart and soul over our most recent and shocking sudden loss of BHRR's Hamilton The Newf. 🙁 We feel like we are in a walking nightmare and most of the day has been a blur yet; all of us here have been trying to stay super busy and keep our minds plus bodies occupied so as to not think………….all of us are still reeling in shock.

This video of how well BHRR's Dozer and so many others are doing including BHRR's Ani & BHRR's Cosette and BHRR's Jetta really help find purpose to why I get up in the morning and what I look forward to each day.

BHRR's Freedom & BHRR's Peanut are coming out with me on the 30th of June for another social play date.

Unfortunately, the second outing that I was hoping to have for BHRR's Freedom awhile ago; was cancelled due to the Volunteer having an injured animal at home.

Should this Visit go well, I shall be moving towards them having playdates, day trips etc. on their own for an hour or so with approved Volunteers. BOTH of them are coming along beautifully and I still have to update their blogs from their first social network dates.

We had our most recent BHRR 'EXPERIENCE' Mini Open House on Saturday April 21st.

When we hosted our first BHRR 'EXPERIENCE' Mini Open House after the FREEDOM DANES arrived – end of November; we let them stay in their crates as their 'safe' spot and they could come out(which none did) if they would like to. We asked all of our attendees to be understanding and not push them and get into their space.

When we hosted our second BHRR 'EXPERIENCE' Mini Open House after the FREEDOM DANES arrived – end of February; we let them once more do what they desired and they came in and out at will. BIG improvement! The girls wanted to spend most of the day outside in the sun yet came into the sunroom for bits of time and allowed some people to pet them. Once again, we asked all of our attendees to be understanding and not push them and get into their space.

When we hosted our third BHRR 'EXPERIENCE' Mini Open House at the FREEDOM DANES arrived – April 21st; we did not allow the Danes as part of our next stage of move forward social rehabiltiation; to go into crates. Both BHRR's Peanut and BHRR's Gretta did once and I removed them and shut the crate door. Someone had let BHRR's Riley out of his crate and had not closed it behind him. We asked our attendees, of which most were respectful; and we only had to say a few words to some; to be understanding and not push them and get into their space.

BHRR's Freedom ROCKED it! BHRR's Peanut did very well and BHRR's Gretta is still much further behind than all five of the FREEDOM DANES here.

They are each travelling their own journeys from hell in their own ways; yet; all are very slow with baby steps and we continue to work towards their social rehab success – AND to each of them, this could mean something different. These were Danes that were carried for the longest time. So many did not know them at the ES or when they first arrived to BHRR and they think that a quiet word and a treat(which they would not take from every stranger we observed) is going to make them 'all better'.

These are dogs that have major trust issues and lack social skills and communication and they are not 'won' over with words of praise.

They are 'won' over by time, patience, consistency, routine, structure, obedience and routine…..with positive reinforcement and all of this comes to mean stability in their worlds.

They are not to be pitied as so many were want to do at the Open House, they are not to be felt sorry for; FOR these dogs to have any chance at living any semblance of a normal life(and normal to them could well mean something differerent for each of them); they need to be given some 'tough' love here and there. Gently pushing the boundaries when they have demonstrated they are ready and two more of them are and this means going out into the big scary world now. If I felt sorry for them, I would keep them safely closeted at BHRR for their lives and carried them in and out all day long as needed. FOR to have felt sorry for them, would have meant that they never would have learnt to walk on their own, learnt to play, sleep without standing all the time, take a treat, not cower at the back of their crates when you went to feed them, never became housebroken etc.

BHRR's FREEDOM had his first social time outing with me on April 7th and I will update his blog and soon it is BHRR's Peanut's time.

A word to any home that adopts them for I remain very positive that they shall be placed up for adoption at some point; that is an X time determination though; those homes cannot set them up for failure which shall undo all the foundation laying and proper build-up of their characters plus personalities since the day they came into BHRR.

So, for the one that may think that the 'tough' love of not allowing them to hang out in crates when they had no need of those crates any longer; was not 'good; please understand the 'why' of this. So many of these FREEDOM dogs out there (627 total) have been adopted quickly and bounced back to whereever they were adopted from. They bounced back because they were NOT ready to be adopted and the homes were NOT really prepared/ready for all that these dogs still needed.

THIS is not the mandate for BHRR. Quick to adopt is not in our vocabulary yet; at the same time; we work towards a move forward rehabilitation approach designed specifcally for each dog under our care. These dogs will be placed up for adoption WHEN they are ready, not before and they TELL me when it is time for the next steps.

We want forever loving homes, not failures for home and our dogs.

Always forward…they are a product of their past, live in their present and we look towards their future.

Just some food for thought….. 😉

ISO: Two approved Volunteer homes to assist with FREEDOM DANES BHRR's Freedom & BHRR's Peanut's next stages of social rehabilitation.

BHRR's Freedom shall have another social date with myself this upcoming Saturday at a Volunteers' home(still need to post his video and photos from his April 7th outing) & BHRR's Peanut is now ready to begin her next small steps on her journey to be eventually be placed up for adoption!

I am seeking a Volunteer who may be willing to take BHRR's Freedom out for about one hour sans me on Saturday May 5th – time anywhere between 8 AM – 1 PM; even just for a small car ride & I am also seeking an approved Volunteer who may be willing to allow BHRR's Peanut and myself to visit for an hour or so after 3 PM on the 7th of May.

Please EMAIL if you are interested and available. These GD's came into BHRR quite catatonic and we need people to not crowd or push them…. THANKS!

HERE is the CBC Ottawa Morning radio interview with Anna, myself & BHRR’s Journey that was live/aired on Monday February 13th, 2012! It was re-aired at 5:40 AM on Tuesday February 14th, 2012

The belief in Journey is so warming to feel plus see and once again from my own heart; THANK you to each and every one for helping her!!! I am and remain wonderfully overwhelmed and humbled deeply by such gifts of money and material goods given to her cause!

I have spent a good part of my AM answering emails, discussing what BHRR does, how BHRR does what we do, that we operate out of our home and those of our approved temp foster homes, why BHRR is so successful at what we do plus deeply thanking everyone for the continued support!

Education is so key and BHRR’s Journey continues to teach many about forgiveness, trust, giving, acceptance plus determination!

She is scheduled to head back to the Vet at KAH on Friday February 17th for a recheck on that tail, possible vaccines and another fecal! GO JOURNEY GO!

AND Anna, I am still in awe and inspired by your generous and giving soul!!!

I also finally was able to hear the interview myself! 😉

BHRR's Journey's article in The Ottawa Citizen.

A heartfelt touching warm story of a community being brought together by a GD who was in urgent need and how inspirational, beautiful their supportive efforts including those of Anna with her incredible WOW YUMMY Fundraising Biscuit idea to help save this special GD has been!

AND, Journey is bombing along in her rehabilitation and come April, she should be ready to be placed up for adoption!

SO many believed in you Journey and so many LOVE you!!! YOU are worthy, deserving and no less important than any other dog! 🙂

Some errors including that almost $3,000 in private donations have been sent not $1,000 to date; BHRR is not located in Oxford Mills; Journey is a 'she' not a he plus some of the timeline in the story is in error. BUT, a lovely article overall! 🙂

A COPY OF THIS ARTICLE IS BELOW:

OTTAWA — When she heard the story of Journey – the emaciated Great Dane found on Highway 401 just before Christmas, close to starvation and covered in bite wounds – Anna Gray-Henschel embarked on a journey of her own. She knew she had to do something to help, but she couldn't have imagined that, more than a month later, she would have baked 20,000 dog biscuits to raise money for his care.

As a dog lover, owner of two Great Danes and someone who recently decided to volunteer at rescue shelters, Gray-Henschel came up with the idea of baking some of her own dogs' favourite cheddar cheese and bacon biscuits and selling them to raise money. The idea had worked when her employer, the RCMP, held fundraising campaigns, so why not try to augment her personal donation toward the poor dog's care? Her goal was to bake 100 dozen and sell them for $3 a dozen. She would then donate all $300 of the proceeds to Birch Haven Rescue and Rehabilitation Services in Oxford Mills, where Journey was convalescing.

Several weeks later, that 100 dozen has become 1,667 dozen and she still has orders for 167 dozen more. By day, she's a director general in the RCMP's national security criminal investigations branch, and every evening she bakes for four hours. Weekends she puts in 12-hour days by the oven.

"My husband has been joking about our hydro bill," she said. "But he's not really complaining."

When she's not baking, she's delivering the biscuits. By the time she fills all her orders, she will have raised $5,600 toward the dog's extensive vet bills, which will likely top $8,000 and include at least one more surgery. If the orders keep coming, she'll keep baking, providing shipping (when necessary), delivery and the baking supplies at her own expense. She hopes to raise $6,000 by Valentine's Day.

"It's just one thing and it's not a big deal, but it shows you can have a huge impact if you do your little thing," she said. "It's such a small thing to do to help rehabilitate this beautiful dog. It's hard to believe someone would do this to her."

The response to Journey's story has been amazing, said Gwendilin Boers, an animal behaviour specialist (she's a PhD candidate in the subject) who runs the shelter and works part-time at the Kanata Animal Hospital.

"We were shocked by her condition," Boers said. "We see some terrible things in rescue, but she's one of the worse cases I have seen in my 16 years of running the rescue."

Journey weighed 74 pounds when a Great Dane at her age should weigh between 110 and 115 pounds. She had fleas, pieces of her ear tips missing, open bite wounds all over her body, a broken tail, frostbite, hypothermia, dehydration and round worms. Boers suspects she was abused. "She was in tragic shape, to say the least."

Boers said the community support had been all the more impressive coming, as it did, just after Christmas.

Journey was brought to the rescue one day after she was found by a Good Samaritan in the freezing rain on the highway near Brockville.

"I'm beyond touched," Boers said, adding that people such as Gray-Henschel had eased the worries about how they would be able to pay the extensive vet bills associated with Journey's recovery. In addition to those who have contributed to the biscuits campaign, private donations have totalled more than $1,000.

"Journey has been a Christmas miracle," Boers said. "She has met every obstacle she has had to overcome with grace and good temperament. She's a very loving dog who has brought so many people together in the spirit of giving. Anna's contribution is just wonderfully overwhelming."

Boers thought it would be June before Journey would be ready for adoption, but, given her progress so far – she now weighs close to 100 pounds – she estimates it will be mid-April.

Donations are being accepted through the Kanata Animal Hospital or by email transfer to gwen@birchhaven.org. Birch Haven Rescue and Rehabilitation is accepting donations through PayPal.

In honor of Gwennie, the Founder of BHRR,  all of us are wishing her a most wonderful and special of birthdays today – February 3rd!

As we have done for the last 2 years as a surprise for Gwennie; if you believe in BHRR; enjoy all the blog updates, pictures, open houses, GD hikes, Gwennie novel posts, her educational articles plus links; please make a donation in support of her rescue efforts.

This fundraiser shall run through until 11:59 PM today – Friday February 3rd, 2012

This blog post was made without Gwennie's awareness as we have managed to do in the past and we hope that once again, she shall be pleasantly surprised!

You can help ease her stress and worries somewhat today about always worrying about money for food to help those in need of the BHRR programs. You can help ease her stress and worries somewhat today about coming up with funds for food by either donating a bag of food or making a donation for food to be bought. You can help ease her stress and worries somewhat today about the mounting food bills for BHRR for beside Vet Bills, this is BHRR's biggest expense.

Together let's make that BHRR 'chain of success' for Gwennie even more strong today!

Email transfer to gwen@birchhaven.org or via PayPal (account gwen@birchhaven.org) OR even bring a bag of food or cash donation to the upcoming BHRR Open House to help BHRR out! As Gwennie states so often, there is no amount too small.

Several of us approached Gwennie again this year to ask what she wanted for her birthday and once again never did she mention anything for herself. Always her family, friends or the animals.

Please do help us make a birthday very special today for a very special lady who operates a very special Rescue by making a food donation to BHRR.

Total Raised to Date$905 + 6 bags of food

Not even 10:00 AM and I know it is going to be a great day!

Major break through in the treat department with four of the FREEDOM Danes and also BHRR's Atlas!!!

Adele is now actually taking treats from my hand and eating them. With the amazing 'heart biscuits' that Anna made and were donated; Adele is understanding what treats are!!! This is huge!
Freedom is now eating the 'Journey Heart Biscuits' in his crate; he is not yet brave enough to take them from my hand but getting there!
Gretta is now also taking the 'Journey Heart Biscuits' from my hand
Atlas – who has learnt a bit about treats since his arrival but was rare for him to like any one kind; gets very excited over the 'Journey Heart Biscuits'

AND last but not least; Peanut will now follow me around looking for the 'Journey Heart Biscuits'.

For those who know these dogs; this is a huge breakthrough! Time, patience and the right treatie made with extra love; is rehabbing these dogs from their own lives of hell.
NONE of them knew what a kind touch or loving word or what treats and good food were BUT they are learning! The only experience they knew were that hands were for pain and hitting and smacking and rejection and cruelty. NOT any more!!! NEVER again my sweeties shall a hand be raised in anything but care and love.

'Tis a good day indeed! 🙂

From Anna – 1257 dozen 'BHRR Journey Heart Biscuits' now ordered. Most humble of thanks being sent to everyone plus Anna…Thank you!!

Her  e-mail or you can call her at 613 993 2738. Up to 1,002 dozen orders taken to date!!! Anna also has a Hypo recipe for those that have sensitive tummy doggies!

A post made by Anna Gray-Henschel on the BHRR FB Fan Page:

"To raise funds for BHRR's Journey, I am baking smokey bacon with cheddar heart shaped dog biscuits at $3/dz. Happy to deliver them in the Ottawa area or bring them to BHHR's open house for those attending. I will also ship them at no charge within Canada. Please let me know before the end of this month so that you'll have them in time for Valentine's Day. Made with love, bought with love and every penny sent to BHRR with love to Journey."

BHRR does not adopt out during the XMAS season due to our position that it is not in the best interest of any new addition being added during such a busy, exciting and somewhat stressful time for many.  Quite a few other Rescues, Shelters, Pounds etc. have also begun to follow a similar protocol to what we have been doing.

Our XMAS Shutdown period for this year is from Saturday December 17th, 2011 to Tuesday January 3rd, 2012 inclusive.

During this time, BHRR is available 24/7 as always for requests for assistance of animals in need.

For the many that are not familiar with these two GD's. When they were first seized, we had to carry them in and out of their runs at the ES(Emergency Shelter). They were that traumatized and terrorized and berefit of human contact, a loving touch and kind word. 🙁 They also then had to be treated for thrush, which delayed them getting to BHRR from when we were first asked to bring them in. AND they had their first heats not long after arrival to the ES. THIS seizure saved them, for; if they had not been rescued; they would have been bred and bred and bred like Adele and so many others. 🙁

Gretta, like Freedom is terrified of fans. AND both will drop to the ground and cower, if you carry anything that they could feel might hurt them. EVEN food or water bowls. 🙁

Gretta, like Freedom and Adele can often be found standing on her hind legs, over the one door and will stay that way; if you let her; until she reaches a point of exhaustion and then will rest or sleep in that position. This has been a common thing learnt amongst many of those with the PRU FREEDOM DOGS as they tried to keep themselves out of the filth that was their prison. 🙁

Here is a post that I made on November 27th, 2011 on our BHRR FB FAN PAGE re: this two littermates. We believe that they are the daughters of Adele; who is the daughter of RIP BHRR's Albert.

"They have a much longer journey to travel than Cobalt does with their rehab and neither are comfortable with lots of people around. They have their own mischievous side and like to 'tag' on Adele, the wee monkeys!
Peanut is the more outgoing one and Gretta relies heavily on her so they need their time together plus time apart and time with other already well adjusted canines. This has deeply aided their progress. They need to learn to be strong where they are weak and not depend on each other to make up for those 'weak' areas. BOTH are survivors of hell personified and each day is baby steps.
Both are at ideal weights now. Peanut is better eating her food when we are around; Gretta much prefers to eat when things are more quiet but tonight FOR first time, she ate all of her food with me sitting near her crate.
Gretta will take treats from my hand; Peanut prefers it to be placed in her crate.
Gretta is more nervous and things on top of her crate ie a blanket for more 'den' like feeling does not make her comfortable and fans terrify her.
Peanut will drink out of our communal water bowls in the house; Gretta still prefers her water in her crate.
Both will come out of their crates on their own now. They did not do that when they first arrived many weeks ago. You had to hook on the leash, be patient and calm yet quietly confident and reassuring.
BOTH love exploring the fenced in yard. Peanut will come back in on her own, the doorway terrifes Gretta.
Peanut has now started coming to me for touching and affection, submissive yet on her own accord and Gretta is more flighty still.
The TV makes both a bit worried.
Gretta understands what to do with a nice smoked Dino bone and will chew it comfortably in her crate, yet Peanut has no clue.
When they first arrived, both were in a HUGE collosal crate together and then I gradually moved them to they were in side by side crates and then from there across from each other and just this past week, Gretta's crate is still in the sunroom and Peanut's is in the main area.
I could go on and on….so much I have learnt about them and they have taught me and both of them when they are ready; and that is a long ways off yet; shall be true treasures to a homes that will understand 'them' and know that they are not the dogs that one just takes some obedience classes, give them some love, soft beds and they are 'poof' ….miraculous over hte night bomb proof dogs. These two have been terribly wronged and in having taken in Danes from this place in the past, their sire to boot; and they are as traumatized as he was. 🙁
"

Last night; Sean and Mason assisted me so that I could remove the sutures that Gretta had from her spay and then the staples(14) her littermate Peanut had. Both incisions look good; some minor irritation and just one area that we will continue to monitor as there is some mild reaction going on underneath.

BHRR's Gretta was so terrified and did urinate some plus released some of her anal glands. 🙁 BHRR's Peanut was more 'shutdown' and just layed there and for both, I felt so bad. I was a bit surprised that both did not receive dissolvable like Adele and the boys' yet each Vet has their preference and both girls had very gentle loving and reassurances done.

BHRR's Peanut and BHRR's Gretta are two of the 5 Great Danes that BHRR was asked to assist with at the ES after the seizure was done in September from PRU. They are two of 12 dogs / puppies that BHRR has now assisted and I have been a regular Volunteer at the ES since the very first week the seizure happened.  My Disaster Animal Response training has been of deep benefit since I was contacted to Volunteer and continue to Volunteer my time (1-3 times a week) at the ES.

Over 600+ dogs are now in need of forever loving homes and once the court ruling came down on Thursday November 24th, 2011; the move forward was given to allow all these sweet dogs to be altered and then placed up for adoption.

THANK you Red Rover, Anima Quebec, HSI Canda and MAPAQ plus all those that donated, contributed, supported plus Volunteered over these past months to make this happen for these incredible dogs!

FOR ALL THE BHRR's Alberts out there(he came to us at 8.5 years of age and passed away at 10); FREEDOM is now yours! I just wish he was still alive….. :(   This is why I have called them "FREEDOM DOGS" a name that has now gone viral!!!

BHRR's Gretta and BHRR's Peanut are fawn with merle Great Danes, around 11 months of age, female littermates. They were given their rabies on September 16th and we have given them some Revolution and they are being proactively dewormed again.

We believe that they are somehow related to BHRR's Albert.

I will post some photos of them soon, yet you can see photos of them on our BHRR' FB FAN Page. They are both smaller female GD's, well porpotioned and very very very terrifed. They shall not be placed up for adoption for some time.

NOT YET AVAILABLE FOR ADOPTION!

BHRR's Peanut had her mature spay, nails, microchipping, HWT and presurgical bw done today. He teeth were also checked. She weighed 37.2 KGS(81.84 pounds).

While she did not have to be carried by Sean to the car to go to KAH, she had to be carried into the Hospital. She and her sister, BHRR's Gretta were two Danes for the longest time at the ES that we had to carry in and out.

She has a long journey ahead of her for her rehab.
