This is Miss Penelope at Eagleson Veterinary Clinic when she first arrived and was waiting to be seen.

She is quite lethargic and had stopped eating.

Dr. Ammar suspects that she has an uterine stump infection and is waiting for the biopsy results on her ovaries as there was a concern about them during her spay so they were sent off.

I was just emailing with the wonderful Dr. Libby & she said it could take up to 7 business days for those results.

Should she not improve over the next 24 hours, an abdominal u/s and x-rays shall be done.

Miss Penelope…..I will sell a kidney if I have to in order to make sure that you are taken care of!!!

She has been placed on strong antibiotics – Baytril and will remain on the Deramaxx. AND wearing a fashionable cone as her spay incision is now infected. It had opened up a bit during her transport and while on Monday it looked ok, as of today, it is no longer ok.

So many of us are worried about you Miss Penelope and you have a fan club that spans far and wide!

THANK you to everyone who has made incredibly generous and caring donations to her Vet Bills to date…..

Donations can continue to be sent direct to Eagleson Veterinary Clinic 613-383-8381

From our home to all of our friends, family and supporters, may we please ask that you think of dear sweet Miss Penelope and send her well wishes…….

Miss Penelope!

I received a message from her temp foster that she is bleeding plus has mucous coming from her vulva. She was spayed over a week ago.

She has also stopped eating.

Miss Penelope is heading to Eagleson Veterinary Clinic.

If anyone may consider helping her with her ever mounting Vet Bills, you can contact Eagleson Veterinary Clinic directly 613-383-8381

OR via PayPal to gwen@birchhaven.org

OR via email transfer to contactbhrr@gmail.com

We will post an update ASAP.

Please keep her in your thoughts…..

UPDATE: BHRR’s Oliver is now safely dropped off to his temp foster and a very brave boy he was!

He did not bother with their ducks, chickens or guinea pigs and was very respectful of their two chihuahua’s!

What a great boy he is!

AND I am off shortly to see if this may be a right matched foster for The Bakers Dozen of BHRR’s Oliver.

DNA proven IW/GD.

With him being fostered, I can then bring direct into my own home, the Deaf/Visually impaired GD Miss Lily. This will also be a great experience for him! He has come a long way with his play dates and he is ready for this.

AND gentle reminder, as of Thursday August 1st once Miss Lily arrives(Special Needs GD), our doors shall be closed indefinitely until we can achieve financial health again due to so many expenses, many of them unexpected with dogs we have been asked to assist…..

So, any consideration to our cause would be deeply appreciated so that we can continue to help dogs in need of our highly specialised programs…

As always donations for Vet care can be made direct to Eagleson Veterinary Clinic 613-383-8381

We will post an update ASAP re: BHRR’s Oliver!

Miss Penelope!

She weighed 45.3 kgs(99.66 pounds) at EVC – Eagleson Veterinary Clinic – tonight.

She is thin and lacks muscle mass/tone in her hind end, especially on the right side.

We continued her vetting protocol that we started in Ohio, prior to her arrival.

She had her ears cleaned, we are also running a wellness panel plus to further test her Positive Lymes result to determine her best course of treatment. Her poor body tells a terrible story of having had so many litters….yet, no more! You get to be the spoiled ‘baby’ now. Your puppymill days are done.

Once she puts on more muscle mass/tone and weight, we will re-visit her ‘off’ gait to see if it is just her, a result of how she was kept her whole life etc.

Her joint exam was a thumbs up as was her heart and lungs! Her teeth are worn yet her Vet did not feel she required a dental at this time. He felt they were worn from chewing on whatever she was kept in.

Miss Penelope had been shaved prior to us getting her which we can only presume was due to having horrible matts and her professional grooming session with us shall be on August 2nd with Melissa at Groomingdale’s.

We still await the results of the biopsies on her ovaries.

She is back in mid August for boosters and a re-visit on her body condition etc.

This girl is AMAZING! So sweet, loving and despite all she has gone through, seeks out affection from humans…was wonderful with every dog plus puppy she met at EVC too.

Miss Penelope is going to make a home a WOW addition when she is ready….

A small female Newf that is so gentle and melts your heart!! I deeply enjoyed meeting her…..

As always donations for her continued care can be made direct to Eagleson Veterinary Clinic 613-383-8381

Thank you again to Megan for being Miss Penelope’s awesome temp foster Mama!

From our home to all of our friends, family and supporters, warm good night wishes are being sent!

This is Miss Lily!
~15 month old Great Dane
*She is Deaf & Visually Impaired

Thank you from our hearts to Tanya of Poet’s Vision for putting the O. in touch with our highly focused special needs Great Dane Rescue.

As I state so often, good owners sometimes have to let go of their dogs and it is an extremely difficult time for them.

This home is not new to dogs and is not inexperienced yet, having a deaf/visually impaired Dane is new to them. They have worked hard to do right by her and they now want better for her.

BHRR is here to support and to assist where needed and please do join me in providing kindness to her O.

ETA to BHRR Thursday August 1st.

I also wish to thank Tasha for offering to temp foster BHRR’s Oliver so that I can bring this lovely gem direct into my own home!

After her arrival, per a previous post, our doors will be closed as we need to take care of our financial health. With the unexpected expense of BHRR’s Fletcher of not one yet two surgeries this week, our coffers are bare.

BHRR relies on the kindness and support of others via donations to keep BHRR operating to the high standard that we do and BHRR is mostly funded out of the personal pockets of Sean/myself.

We are tapped right taking care of BHRR’s Volt, BHRR’s Rion and now BHRR’s Fletcher plus BHRR’s Penelope, so once BHRR’s Lily arrives; we are sorry to say that we can not help any further dogs for X period of time.

For those that may consider our cause to support, donations can be made direct to Eagleson Veterinary Clinic 613-383-8381

OR via PayPal to gwen@birchhaven.org

OR via email transfer to contactbhrr@gmail.com

We never will compromise the high level of care each animal deserves and while we wish we could keep our doors open; we cannot without your help.

BHRR has been the local Great Dane/Giant Breed Rescue since 1996 and we thank you in advance for any consideration……

Megan has her!

She has now made the trip home with Megan Wright and Miss Penelope, the Newf is slowly settling in……

Tomorrow, we are off to Eagleson Veterinary Clinic to continue her vetting protocol and on August 2nd, she is going to have a professional groom with Melissa @ Groomingdale’s in Stittsville.

She has a long road ahead of her – needs strength/muscle mass/tone in her hind end too, yet we know that she will have the BHRR village surrounding her with so much healing and helping hands….

Your puppymill nightmare days are over and while we wish your first 5 years were not spent in such misery, your future shall be nothing but goodness and caring hearts…..

Miss Penelope began her journey to us yesterday and Megan is on her way shortly to meet up up with her transport.

Thank you Megan for being her temp foster and I look forward to meeting her myself tomorrow!

She is the Newf from the puppymill that was dumped and we found out is Lymes positive after starting her vetting protocol.

We are also awaiting the results of her biopsies on her ovaries as the Vet who spayed her was concerned.

Her poor uterus clearly showed how overbred she was….

We are at Eagleson Veterinary Clinic tomorrow night to continue with the Vetting we started prior to her arrival.

In being told that her spay incision seemed to have opened very slightly, we may have her in today instead….in having seen a pic last night, it looked ok – some swelling/bruising and I stated that if she needs to go to a Vet or emerge to take her for whatever she needs, she is getting!

I do not want her uncomfortable either.

Poor girl’s tail is apparently missing a lot of hair too and the skin scrapings we did were negative.

A great regime of excellent food, vet care and love should hopefully begin to resolve that…..

I have been told she is super sweet and wishing Megan and all of the transport angels a safe drive today!

Soon Miss Penelope…soon….we will have you here safely very soon…..

BHRR’s Fletcher it is official….you are either trying to kill yourself or me!

When I got home from work last night or rather the wee hours of this AM, as is my habit, I check in with the dogs and love on them while I eat a snack before going to bed.

From the time the rest of The Boerskins had settled the dogs in for the night and when I got home – not even 1.5 hours later, this was my scene when I went to the sunroom – the place Mr. Fletcher likes to sleep at night….

He has to wear a cone as his leg recovers and he was sitting there with no cone and a rubbed raw bleeding booboo on his head…..

Back to emergency we went……..

BHRR’s Fletcher, the already low money coffers have been dearly taxed and with your now two emergencies this week, the financial cupboards are completely empty….

We also have not one but two new dogs arriving this week with their own extensive Vet Bills – Miss Penelope the Newf & Miss Lily, the special needs Great Dane. We also had BHRR’s Miss Tilly’s own surgery this past week for her spay, which turned out to be an exploratory per our recent post.

The defiant look on his face says it all as to how he felt about his cone…rubbed several spots on his face raw – this one is the worse and he even poked a hole in his head. What on earth did you do?!!

AND to top it all off, chewed the newly installed wood on our window frame with sheer ‘tude.

BHRR’s Fletcher, you have got to be kidding me!!!! You are lucky you are so handsome!!!

Thank you again to the amazing soul who had donated $100 to his vet care when he was hurt on his play date earlier this week….

He will be moving under Eagleson’s Veterinary Care shortly and while the Emerge Hospital no longer take direct donations, Eagleson does. They can be reached at 613-383-8381.

Or, donations can also be made….if any one may consider his cause – we are just under bills of $1,500 this week alone for Mr. Fletcher, donations can be made via PayPal to gwen@birchhaven.org or via email transfer to contactbhrr@gmail.com

May Saturday become a much better day for him and me!

BHRR’s Miss Tilly – the Great Dane from the hoarding situation went in for her Spay yesterday.
~14 months old

The home must have obtained her from another as though myself, Sean and two Vets at two different Hospitals were not able to find a Spay scar – when we surgically went in, she had been spayed at some point. Hoarders generally do not alter their pets – so, we are thinking that before this home got her, she had been spayed at a super young age. Just a supposition….

Once she recovers, we will do her professional photo shoot and then she will have her own special announcement to make!

We have done all of her proactive and preventative vetting since her arrival in May. Her Spay plus microchip were the last things left to do.

This girl is a WOW dog! Just a treat and a total sweetheart! Fabu!!

A great starter Dane for a home wanting a Dane yet, has never had one before too!

We know already when it is time to take applications for her, that we shall also consider homes with children as young as 8.

She weighed almost 103 pounds so has put on some great muscle mass and tone! Almost 11 pounds. She is an amazing personality plus temperament in a smaller framed Dane body. Lovely conformation.

From our home to all of our friends, family & supporters, warmest good night wishes are being sent!

BHRR’s Miss Penelope!
*She now has a name!*

This is the ~5 year old Newf that was used for breeding her whole life – dumped and we also were told that she is now one of 12 dumped from the same Breeder over the past 6 months. One of those dogs tested heartworm positive.

While her transport was being organised – thanks Lucy and to all of the transport angels! – we had her vetted and the poor girls uterus showed just how overbred she was when she was spayed.

We were asked if we wanted to have her ovaries sent for biopsy as the Vet was concerned and we absolutely said yes. We await those results.

She tested negative for heartworm yet positive for Lymes.

We had a Fecal done and also microchipped her. She was placed on flea/tick/heartworm meds.

We began her de-worming plus vaccine protocol.

She weighed 95 pounds, so a small female. I do not know if she is thin at this time.

We did a skin scraping to rule out mange and it was negative.

Her teeth are quite worn down and as we just had her spayed – big surgery for her – we will review when she is healthier if she will require a dental too.

She will arrive on Sunday night – thank you to Megan for stepping up to be her temp foster!

On Monday July 29th, we will have her seen by one of our Vets here to continue her vetting.

We have had $100 donated to her care to date and thank you again from my heart for your generous support!

She has a long road to go and has so much to learn regarding kind loving helping hands and not neglectful hands.

There is a big beautiful world out there that she shall be slowly introduced to.

We are told that she is super sweet and though she had one grooming session this week, we have booked one on August 2nd with Melissa at Pet Valu Groomingdale’s. We want to make sure that her coat is brought to health and shine.

If anyone may consider her cause to support, donations can be made via PayPal to gwen@birchhaven.org

OR via email transfer to contactbhrr@gmail.com

From our home to all of our friends, family and supporters, warm good night wishes are being sent!

**GRAPHIC PHOTO’S**

BHRR’s Fletcher is determined to give me more grey/white hairs or a heart attack…..

After successfully recovering from being caught in a poachers snare back in February while on a play date and de-gloving a good part of his leg and foot – took 5 surgeries….this is what he did on his play date just now!

About one hour ago, I got a panicked call from the home saying that he was doing his usual with their dogs; running/playing through the bushes and trees and when he came back for his ‘check in’ treat; this was his foot….

We are back into Emerge and at least one more surgery plus lots of antibiotics/pain meds for him.

Dear sweet boy, you are so determined to be your own $10,000 dog in Vet Bills…..

Please keep him in your thoughts and if anyone may consider helping us with his Vet bills, donations can be made via:

PayPal to gwen@birchhaven.org

OR via email transfer to contactbhrr@gmail.com

This is not how I wanted his or my night to go…….

~5 year old female Black Newf
We are calling her BHRR’s Penelope!

She is one of 12 Newf’s over the past 6 months that have been dumped by the same Breeder in a pound, one of them also tested heartworm positive.

Transport is currently being worked on for next weekend and thank you to Megan for stepping up to be her temp foster.

We will be beginning her vetting prior to transport – has some skin issues we are also looking into – and the rest of her Vetting once she arrives (first Vet visit is booked for July 29th) and we scheduled a pampered spa session with Melissa at Groomingdale’s PV Stittsville for August 2nd.

Cannot imagine her coat after ~5 years of improper care.

Thank you from our hearts to Lucy for asking us to assist, working so hard on her/others transport and for Jane/Tamee of Just Paws Rescue for also helping to get her to us safely!

BHRR’s Volt is AVAILABLE FOR ADOPTION again.

We were not able to successfully close off on the references for the current application.

BHRR’s Volt is once again Available for a PENDING Foster To ADOPT Home. SAID approved home MUST be within 2 hours of our location.

Unfortunately, we were not able to successfully close off on this application submitted for her.

We remain patient as does she!

She is a WOW puppy and the future is truly her oyster!

Once she has a heat per her specialist Dr. Philibert, he can better assess her vulva conformity issues and see how much, if any of a ‘nip and tuck’ she may need along with addressing her tooth – at least one that they see right now.

As it is a broken lower incisor, he and her two regular Vets have not been concerned in waiting to address it until it is time to spay her.

So, we remain hunkered down for that right matched forever loving temp foster to adopt home to find her!

This picture is of her and one of my own fav humans at our recent June BHRR “EXPERIENCE” Mini Open House.

Another piece of my heart died tonight…..

BHRR’s Salem.

From once terrified, confused, suffering and alone in a high kill pound to a bit shy to start yet, extremely loyal to a fault and deeply loving.

You are the dog that would have laid her life down for those that you trusted and adored.

There were no half measures with you. You were all in or out. One always knew where they stood with you. Such an honest dog. .

You also recognized insincerity in people in an instant. You easily knew who was a good person and who was not. Your stunning wise eyes did not just see into people’s souls, they read them.

Your heart, your beauty, your intelligence and BHRR events shall never be the same again knowing that you will not be there plunking yourself down in the ‘prime’ real estate parts – front door and cash – to get the maximum number of belly rubs possible!

AND those high-fives! World champion high fiver! You expressed so much emotion in your high-fives.

You have been taken from us way too soon….7 years young is not near enough time to have made enough memories and for you to have had enough experiences of loving kind caring hands….not hurtful, abusive cruel ones.

As with all of our doggies lost to us; there are no words that will ever truly do you justice BHRR’s Salem.

You will be dearly missed and at least when it was your time to cross over you were held in my dear embrace, stroking your fur gently and telling you what a beautiful special girl you are. How cherished and sorry that I was that you would not have another sunrise or sunset……

Though, this was my first time back at KAH since I left on June 1st after 15+ years; I could not imagine not having had the people that have been there for you since Day 1 – me too! – by your side.

Thank you to my KAH heart family members of Dr. Adams and Chelsea who not only warmly welcomed me yet comforted me with words and yup, two hugs – right into my Gwennie bubble…..

RIP glorious lady Salem…..and as with all of our beloved animals, I will meet you in my dreams until we shall meet in person once more…..

Miss Volt is moving under a PENDING Foster to Adopt!

We shall update as we can!

So this just happened! Always wanted to say that!

BHRR’s Daffodil is ADOPTED!

This sweet precious amazing out of this world fantastic Dane has waited patiently for so long – as have we! – for that right matched forever loving home to find her.

I have stated this before….it only takes one application, that right matched forever loving one to make a successful adoption occur and dear sweet beautiful lady, yours finally arrived.

In all of the time all of us have waited, not ONE application ever came in for you….not one.

As with BHRR’s Holden with each event at BHRR watching people step around and even over him – which to me was positively rude – I kept saying, that those people were not meant for him and that when that time was right, the one meant for him would ‘see’ him for who he is and adore him for being who he is….BHRR’s Holden, your own happily ever finally happened years ago and today, it was BHRR’s Daffodils turn.

For those that saw these two at our recent BHRR ‘EXPERIENCE’ Mini Open House, words like ‘magical’ and ‘special’ were heard….

Well, then the application came in and from there the adoption process was gone through and tonight, with Megan assisting – who is also the lovely soul who helped name BHRR’s Daffodil  – a wonderful home-visit was had….

Congrats to this home and the stunning Miss Daffodil has two ‘big’ siblings too!

We also want to welcome this home to our BHRR family!

For as I often say, we did not lose Miss Daffodil, we gained another fabu Approved Volunteer!

I am now making the drive home and as tired as I am, my heart is so happy!

Congratulations!!
