BHRR Animals Available For Adoption

This is a blog post, updated regularly as to who is available for adoption and the ‘quick’ status of others not yet available for adoption.
NOTE: This blog post is on each of the dogs’ individual pages.
All of our available dogs can also be found on our PetFinder website.
*To read a dog’s blog, scroll to the very bottom of that dog’s individual page and read upwards, skipping over any posts such as fundraiser posts. They will answer most of your questions re: age, history etc.*

**NOTE: As of December 1st, 2016; BHRR shall no longer be responding to any inquires to adopt. We are following the lead of other r/q organizations and ONLY completed adoption applications submitted to the BHRR BOD shall be considered/responded to.**

BHRR is a federally registered NP organization and requires an application/contract to be filled out, personal references including a vet reference if applicable and a home visit to be done before being approved to adopt.

We also require that at the time of meeting any BHRR animal (after completing the application process up to that point) that the whole family + any other currently owned animals are present for the mandatory home-visit.

BHRR only places per best/right matched personality fit.

We also require that within four months of having adopted your new addition that at least one full round/session of group classes of obedience (they can range from 6-18 weeks) must be started and upon completion; proof (registration + completion) must be submitted to BHRR’s attention at BHRR and with having your signature on the adoption application/contract; you will be in a legal breach of your contract should this not be done. The animal involved will have to be returned promptly & safely to BHRR at your own expense.

Mr. Albar(one of our Beans) says he has been enjoying the snow after the big storm yesterday/overnight! All of that rain and wet, heavy snow has made for some big mud puddles!

Miss Chrissy is snoozing in our small cubby on one of our fireplaces. We are doing renovations, and had been storing some of the old pieces of tile in the cubby, and she also thought this was a good place to be! All tile pieces have now been removed, so no injuries are possible.

This handsome Bean has been a bit sad since his littermate & one of his bff’s was adopted recently – Miss Bev, so I took Mr. Albar on a special date today. 

We picked out a new toy, went through Tim’s for a plain Timbit, and had a lovely drive with the sunroof open and a/c blowing! Then topped off our fun date with a visit to friends for a love fest on him!

I wish to thank Elaine again for joining me on such short notice to do this home visit for a possible approved adoption of either Mr. Albar or Miss Bev.
 
Either pup would have been a right-matched personality fit – that is not all that common to have two so closely matched, yet when the application came in, these two were the ones I felt could be the best possible fits.
 
The home felt a deeper connection to Miss Bev.
 
It was hard to watch Mr. Albar as for all that know him, he loves women, yet adores men – Richard can well attest to that! – and he was so smitten with the man. Elaine & I both had our hearts wrench a bit at watching that knowing that he was not their chosen one.
 
Both pups travelled great in the car, first looking around, then snoozing snuggled up with each other, and the giant stuffies that folks know that I have for the dogs.
 
As I got closer to the home, Mr. Albar began to do a bit of drooling. He settled back down yet as I was literally parking, he puked on poor Miss Bev’s tail, and my back seat, and one of my large stuffies. Thank goodness for bags, Lysol wipes, and napkins in my car. Always travel prepared! 
 
Both were wonderful guests – they showed how smart they are with how well they are housebroken, they were well mannered, and Miss Bev showed how much fun carpeted stairs were! Mr. Albar picked up on that pretty quickly.
 
As I explained to this home, I put my heart and soul into each of our dogs; we go up and beyond on everything from vetting to food, to training to love plus spoiling to pictures, blog updates, etc., and that r/q rescue is not done by one person alone. THIS litter was surrounded by a village, a small yet mighty powerful one and the final cost of successfully rehabilitating them is over $30,000, and counting for their top-notch care continues. 
 
We work so hard to ensure that our dogs become assets to the home plus community. This litter was exposed to SO much as their individual blogs have been well documented as proof.
 
Elaine said to me this must be so hard to let them go, and it is! Miss Charm crippled me, and I only had her for mere hours before she passed away in my arms. Miss Ayla had me welling up, too when she was adopted. YET, I said so many times today, as I have so many times in the past, that I am so freakin’ proud of this litter and that if I have done my job right, now it is time to pass the torch and have their right matched personality fit adoptive homes do right by our dogs. We will always be here as a 24/7 resource, our contract states that our dogs must come back to us if for any reason the home cannot keep them any longer or care for them properly.
 
This is once again, not a goodbye, this is just a turning of a beautiful page in Miss Bev’s journey of life, and looking forward to the next pages plus chapters of the WOW adventures in her future!
As for Mr. Albar, the great experiences that you had today, just builds upon your already solid well, written resumé, and your own right-matched personality fit home is out there….the same goes for Miss Nola plus Miss Maybelle Cutie. My cherished Beans!
 
We are not in a rush, we are patient, and boy, do they ever live a grand life right now….as the weather warms back up, we are spending more and more time back outside – though in the winter, we also spent vast amounts of time outside too, planning for play dates, visits, and adventures!
 
AND a special treat was running into Margaret on my way out to do this home visit today, as she was dropping off some donations in our shed!
 
Our attention now turns to reviewing the applications that have been submitted for Miss Asante, and as always, we will only approve a right-matched personality fit home. We are patient and we keep our mandates of putting the dogs first as our priority – we know she is popular like so many other BHRR dogs and will update as we can.

NOTICE:
 
BHRR does not adopt out during the XMAS season due to our position that it is not in the best interest of any new addition being added during such a busy, exciting, and somewhat stressful time for many.
 
Quite a few other Rescues, Shelters, Pounds, etc., have also begun to follow a similar protocol to what we have been doing for over 26 years.
 
Our XMAS Shut down period for this year is from Monday, December 19th, 2022, to Tuesday, January 3rd, 2023, inclusive.
 
Any applications received during this time will be processed/reviewed as of Wednesday, January 4th, 2023!
 
During this time, BHRR is always available 24/7 for requests for assistance of animals in need, and we shall then network accordingly as the local Great Dane/Giant Breed Rescue since 1996, the welfare of the animals is our top priority. We do not wish to see any animal end up in a disreputable place, of which, sadly, there are far too many out there.

This could well be their last night that all five shall be together for tomorrow, I am doing a home visit for a possible approved adoption of either Miss Maybelle or Miss Ayla.
 
It is going to be an emotional night for me! I freely admit it! I have held these wee beans and fought hard for their survival since they were placed into my hands at barely a week of age.
 
I adore my Beans! 
 
We are also now reviewing another application for one of The Beans. They are looking at one of the black girls too.
 
Poor Mr. Albar and Miss Bev….they remain overlooked.
 
They were at the Vet on Friday, November 11th, for their final boosters. BHRR takes care of everything for our dogs – all rounds of boosters, de-worming, flea/tick/hw meds, pre-op bloodwork, microchipping, spays/neuters, AND it was many many many thousands of dollars to get them healthy from the aspiration pneumonia that they came to us with, saving Mr. Albar’s leg, treating the severe punctures on Miss Ayla, etc. Miss Nola still has her HM 1-2. Could resolve or may stay the same for life etc.
 
Their adoption fees are a mere pittance compared to the almost $27,000 it took to get them healthy.
 
I remain so proud of them!!!

Playdate time today! What a stunning day! 23 degrees!

They love the chairs! Any elevation change they are so excited to explore.
 
Three months old now!

The Beans had their next weigh-ins and were altered today.
 
I also microchipped them and tidied up their nails.
 
I did not get out of surgery until after 3:30 pm. 
 
What a way to end my last surgery tech shift at LAH!
 
From Friday to today, their weights have gone up more than I would have thought!

I barely had time to have a pee break and take a few sips of water. 
 
Now, I am home, and the pups are tucked in, and I am going to forage for some dinner!
 

Their vet bills today were a smidge under $3,000 as I brought my own microchips, saving over $500, and tax plus, I have pain meds at home, saving another several hundred dollars.

The Beans had their re-weighs today and their next DAPP boosters – they also received their first Lepto & Lyme vaccines – plus picked up their next flea/tick & hw meds.
 
Their weights range from 9.7 (Miss Bev) up to 11.3 kgs(Miss Nola & Miss Maybelle Cutie). Mr. Albar was 10.9 kgs. Two of the girls were 11.3 kgs & the other was 11.2 kgs.
 
Thanks to Amanda and Jen for their assistance ‘lugging’ the beans, as the parking lot was insanely busy!
 
We had Miss Nola’s heart checked again, and she still has her Grade 1-2 HM, which is not uncommon and often can be completely harmless, and they often can outgrow them. We shall continue to monitor. Miss Nola and her Bean siblings got the big thumbs up at their Vet visit!
 
The unfortunate part is that three of the beans vomited twice post vaccines, and four were very subdued. This is most likely from the Lepto booster in a combination with the excitement of the day.
 
All temps were high normal, and they are being closely monitored in case they may need some dex or Benadryl.
 
All are resting quietly – getting some sun rays…..
 
On a side note, I was deeply overjoyed to see my Miss Bevie!  I have dearly missed her, and she was so happy to see me too!

We are also open to approved Volunteers to foster them until they are adopted by a right-matched personality fit home.

*Adoptions will not be finalized until after their spays/neuter
*This is in addition to our mandatory obedience clause
*They can go to homes with responsible children as young as 10+
*No more than two children in a home
*They can go to homes with cats
*We prefer homes with at least one right-matched personality-fit dog, not a deal breaker for that right home that has a great social network set up for The Bean!
*Homes must be within 2 hours of our location & be willing to take them to their October 15th booster apt. & their alter apt at the end of October – booked at Liston Animal Hospital
*Foster-to-adopt homes must then be prepared to commit to their final puppy boosters around November 15th (post-adoption), including rabies, dhpp, Lyme plus lepto
**The above clauses will be in the foster-to-adopt contracts in addition to all other requirements found in our standard adoption application contract**

They are ready to be fostered by an approved Volunteer AND they are ready to be fostered to adopt to homes seeking to adopt. The adoption application contract must be completed.

The Beans had their next play date today – thanks again to Katherine, Richard & Carol. 
 
I cannot believe we were there for over 3.5 hours!! I kept saying I did not want to overstay our welcome.
 
They had another amazing experience!
 
I was watching Miss Bev closely as she was trembling at the Vet yesterday when someone was holding her – she was only a bit worried during her vaccine, ok for nails, etc., yet trembled later when a staff member was holding her – yet, she was her normal, size everything up first before plunging right in to explore and snuggled and cuddled and was her loving self today! So, not sure why that was the case at one point yesterday yet, we are making sure all pups get safely exposed to many sights, sounds, and smells in trusted hands.
 
They turn eight weeks old tomorrow and have their professional photo shoot on the 22nd – weather permitting – to make special announcements!
 
I will be looking closely at the weather for other play visit opportunities for them too!
 

The Beans Update!
 
This is Miss Maybelle Cutie – 6 weeks of age!

All of The Beans were at LAH today for their first vaccines – WOW! They will be eight weeks old on Saturday!
 
They have their paparazzi shoot on the 22nd and will be making some special announcements after that!
 
They also have another play date scheduled for tomorrow!
 
Thank you, Cassy, for loving on them today as they were brought in, and out by myself and some of my fantastic work colleagues! They got to hang out in the sun – they will soon be able to get out of the xpen! – have a snack, water, play, and pounce all over Cassy! 
 
Miss Nola – has a Grade 1/2 HM – it could be harmless, she could outgrow it, and we will monitor closely. Her hind end is strong now! YAY!
 
All puppies were re-weighed, thoroughly checked over, had their nails done, loved on, smooched, and they have their next de-worming plus will be old enough to begin flea/tick/hw meds. We will do that tomorrow. Having had their first vaccines today, they had a busy enough day.

I have not seen my five wee beans since August 18th. I still wake up every 1.5-2 hours thinking I need to get them fed.
 
Thank you to their fabulous temp foster for staying in close touch and working with me to keep them moving forward. 
 
We are now working on mixing formula into their canned food and introduced formula-softened kibble yesterday. They are not yet ready to drink formula from a bowl or a low-level Tupperware container. They are a young, just shy of 4.5 weeks old.
 
They will continue to have three meals a day of the formula / canned puppy food (1 can each feeding), and have two small meals (1 cup each feeding to start) of the formula-softened kibble. They are still on the nursing bowl for several meals a day. This adds up to a lot of feedings!
 
Tasha keeps the two smallest ones separate for feeding to ensure they get their share.
 
We do still need the following items for the wee beans:
 
1) Puppy toys – for large breed puppies. *Anything smaller will be choking hazards.
2) Esbilac powdered – 28 ounce or 5 Lb
3) PVD Essential Care canned puppy food – I have bought 8 cases yet we need more!
4) PVD large breed puppy kibble – I have bought two of the 14 kgs bags & we will need much more!

This was their first foray into PVD Essential care canned food on August 11th.

I started off with a 1/4 of a can – bite-sized on my fingers and then moved them onto a Tupperware lid.

By Sunday, they were eating one can per extra feeding for a total of 3 extra feedings in addition to their six formula feedings.

They are too young to have formula mixed in, yet they will get there!! 

My amazing five wee beans…oh how I love you….so much….

The orphaned litter are now three weeks old. They are hearing more, seeing more, and starting to do tail wags, small growls, and barks. A couple are even beginning to attempt to play. Their deciduous (baby) teeth are now coming in too.
 
AND as we have been getting questions re: them, I will answer some.
 
Their nails are long, yes, and should not be trimmed until at least six weeks of age, as they use them to latch onto surfaces to crawl, wobble, plus bobble. As their strength increases, they will become less dependent on their nails to move around.

Yesterday – August 11th, I brought all of the beans to the Vet – my work – so that two of them could be seen.
 
As soon as I walked into the door – I had so many loving hands to hold and snuggle the beans! I work with some incredible folks! Thank you! I wanted to get a picture of my amazing teammates holding the babies, yet there just was not enough time – Thank you Mickayla Petersen & Loralei Valade, Dave, Jenn, Trish & Dr. Liston!
 
 
1) Miss Fighter Bean(Miss Nola) – did an exam on her spine/hind end plus did an x-ray – not the best picture as I quickly took two pics on my phone from the screen.
 
Her spine, knees, toes, and legs have nerves, and she is responsive.
 
The x-ray, as predicted, is a lot of cartilage. Yet, nothing was obviously broken.
 
Soooooooooo, we are continuing to do exercises at home, massages, and getting her to use her hind end to crawl over a folded tea towel to get to me for feeding/cuddles and to the pee pads – which does not seem like much, yet it is a lot for a 20-day old puppy.
 
I am going to keep working on building up her strength – newborn puppy obstacle style!
 
We will continue to monitor her closely as she develops. She receives all of the best in nutrition, care, and vetting, and she is a fighter!
 
For her liquid green diarrhea – they were all dewormed on the 4th, forti flora is being added to all of the puppy’s diets. I will make a separate post about our foray into PVD Essential Care canned puppy food land!
 
They are too young for Metronidazole as it will work on harming the good gut bacteria and not just the bad gut bacteria.
 
I am still trying to get a fecal sample brought in so I can send it to the lab and also do an in-house fecal smear float.
 
They are to be de-wormed again on August 18th.
 
2) Miss Chill Calm Bean – She was once the biggest in the litter, and initially, I did not have a concern with others catching up and even passing her in size.
 
Yet, in continuing to monitor them closely, I noted that she was beginning to lag further and further behind, not drinking as much, finding it harder to suckle, wanting to eat, and tiring out faster, yet, every time I listened to her lungs, she sounded clear.
 
 
Then yesterday early AM, I finally heard it….that sound…that raspy, slightly crackling sound, and saw the belly breathing. She was not winning the battle against aspiration pneumonia. She was slowly losing it.
 
So, she was also seen yesterday, and another ten days of Clavamox have been dispensed for her.
 
She is responding well.

All puppies will begin Forti Flora shortly, and as soon as I can get a sample in – will do a fecal float, fecal testing, plus fecal smear.
 
They ADORE this elephant stuffie. Out of the three stuffies I have, this is their ‘surrogate’ Mama.
 
From our home to all of our friends, family, plus supporters, the best in good night wishes are being sent. I know I am excited about the prospect of maybe, possibly, getting more than 2.5-3 hours of sleep tonight!
Many have thought that this Elephant stuffie was giant or jumbo. It is not! It is a medium size stuffie that the beans get ‘lost’ in.

The last two days are a bit of a blur – I have worked almost 25 hours, and now that I am back home, have time to snag a bite to eat and get set up for the midnight feed.

This is Mr. Warrior Bean. He is the only male out of the six puppies(5 survived).
 
He was the third sickest, and he and Miss Fighter Bean are giving it their all! AS am I!
 
He is a quiet, sweet soul at this time. He is not 100% so, his real personality is not yet completely shining through. He gets frustrated easily as it is hard for him to breathe when attempting to feed as he is still fighting the big battle with aspiration pneumonia.
 
He wants badly to eat, which is an excellent sign, and many opportunities are given for him to latch on. When he can latch, he has an excellent feed. He also has the ‘manly’ burp! 
 
He is also one of the two puppies with punctures. He had a deep terrible, now granulating one on his back leg. We will be monitoring for any long-term effects.
 
He may be wee, yet, his inner strength is immense.

AND ignore the PJs! It is what it is! That I get to shower daily and have a pee is enormous. A hot meal is rare, yet I would gladly forego many a meal, sleep, or getting dressed in ‘real’ clothes if it means that these five beans go on to have great well, deserving futures!

This picture fills my heart with so many thanks, for if you count, all five remaining wee beans are still alive.
 
Today, we had a spa day, and in this pic, they are relaxing post-wash & having gentle puppy massages. They had a lot of caked-on ‘stinky’ from when we picked them up, so it will take a few washes to get it all off.
 
We have also discovered Miss Fighter Bean has issues with her hips and/or back legs. As the beans begin to wobble and bobble more, this has been noticed. We will investigate this further.
 
Is this injury based? Is it nutrition based? A combination? As soon as we got them, we immediately began top-notch care including vetting and feeding, and we know something is not right with her. 
 
I am soon getting ready to do their midnight feed!

Their eyes plus ears began to open yesterday, and though the two weakest ones are not as open as the others, they are there! 
 
AND I still have five pups….the wee boy and one wee girl are fighting hard, and I am fighting hard with them….24/7 care.

They are really good babies, and the healthier they become, the more their individual personalities shine through…..

My heart is so full and bursting with incredible love.
 
I am doing everything I can to get them strong plus healthy and then letting them go….I am committed to them and promised all of them that I will do right by them.
 
I have spent over $1,000 in the past 24 hours on their well-being, and they are worth every dime plus more….

It has been a whirlwind here….
 
I am deeply sorry for the lack of updates today. I was up almost 26 hours straight working on saving these puppies. Sadly, we did lose the pink collar girl at 8:49 am today. I am calling her Miss Charm Bean.
 
Her prognosis was so poor. The emerge vet supported trying. She received sub Q fluids, and all pups are now on Clavamox for aspiration issues.
 
This wee bean received so much love from Cassy & then myself.
 
I snuggled her close, told her how much she was loved that I was very sorry that we could not save her – wish we got her sooner – and told her it was ok to go to sleep and see her mama….
 
It hurts my heart that my horrible cross to bear is seeing these precious creatures die; we tried so hard. Backyard breeders just move on….while our hearts bleed.
 
Too young….
 
We had been told they were a week old, yet they will be 12 days old tonight. Born July 23rd.
 
So much to update on, yet feeding – which they had no suckle reflex, has been a real challenge and as of 10:30 am I finally got them to nurse off a nursing bowl. We have had several good feeds since then. My day has been a total blur.
 
There is a girl as small as Miss Pretty Pink that is struggling, plus the one boy too. We were told last night by the person that had them that there were at least two ‘almost dead’.
 
The litter was 5 girls and 1 boy.
 
Thank you again to Katherine for the donations of pee pads plus formula, and thank you to Cassy for picking up formula plus bottle kits and pee pads. Thank you and to John for picking up the de-wormer plus Penaten – the pups were so hungry before we got them that they were sucking on each other – stomach, vulva & the boy’s penis. The two biggest girls, .56 kg & .64 kg vulva’s are the worse.
 
Two puppies have granulating punctures. That had to be so painful.
 
They were never brought to the vet, and we are now de-worming them. The diarrhea alone has been dehydrating them.
 
I want to thank Kingston Emerge – Dr. Singh for seeing the babies and being so wonderful.
 
Also, instead of paying almost $600 for the exams, he charged for just one puppy exam, and the total bill was just under $450.
 
They were amazing, kind, caring, and lovely…. 
 
Thank you to Mickayla for seeing my email to Dr. Liston re: needing strongid – the emerge hospital did not have any – and filling it so fast.
 
I am exhausted….I am sad….I feel so fortunate to be surrounded by such a strong BHRR network that rallied fast to ensure we had what we immediately needed for these babies. THANK you puppy angels!
 
Per a previous post, we reached out to a couple of groups to see if they could help with this litter. The sick ones will stay with me, and the healthy ones – three right now will go to another group shortly.
 
A lot can change on a dime….so please keep them in your thoughts.
 
We will post our additional puppy needs ASAP.
 
It is time to feed again, do another load of puppy laundry, and maybe I can snag a bit to eat.

 

We have finally had a reply(we have been trying to get a response as to when we can pick up the puppies), and it appears that two puppies are now ‘almost dead.’ They will head right to emerge once we get them  – in Kingston – the whole litter will be checked out.

Dad is believed to be 50% Lab, 25% shep, 25% rottie. We really have no idea. We will see as they age if there is any better indication of Dad. Mom is a purebred unregistered lab. So pups are predominantly lab 75%, 12.5% shep, 12.5% rottie. Apparently, she has had several litters from this sire. The farmer never had her spayed.
 
We are waiting to hear from the person who has them.

***URGENT***
 
We have been contacted regarding 6 Labx that are now 7 days old.
 
Their mom, Labrador Retriever was found deceased three days ago under a tractor with the puppies still nursing. 
 
The Mama belonged to a neighbour of the person who reached out to us.
 
Another individual has them now, has to head out of province, and is finding this overwhelming. We well appreciate and understand the amount of work that goes in hand raising puppies.
 
The person who has them is planning on having them euthanised – one also is apparently not thriving as well as the others – by the weekend should a spot(s) not be found.
