BHRR’s Dean! We were at the Vet this afternoon for his boosters and a recheck on his tail.

He is no longer emaciated which is awesome! HIs Vet was extremely happy with his body condition. AS are we! Do not have a weight captured for today as there was an extremely reactive Rottie that arrived at the same time and it was best to just do what we really needed to do and leave.

He is being placed on another 3 weeks of antibiotics for his tail.

AND he will remain on Gabapentin plus Deramaxx too.

He is still anxious in the car, getting better and still reactive to cars passing by. I now have him reduced to Trazodone twice a day. He has made incredible progress and this a journey for him…..one step at a time. He was so undersocialised prior to his rescue so over-stimulation is a very real thing for him.

He really is a nice boy…with us he now wags his tail, he bounces in excitement and makes the best sounds when I come home from work. He has three BFF’s in doggie buds also – BHRR’s Fred and my two Wolfies – Torin plus Brogan.

He is scheduled for his neuter in March – earliest opening at the Vet – and as we need to work further on his comfort zone around strangers plus being handled and also healing his tail; this gives us a lot more time to get him ready.

From our home to all of our friends, families and supporters, the best of Happy New Year wishes are being sent! We sincerely hope that 2021 is a much better year for all of us……

UPDATE: He has remained seizure free since he was admitted. He was pulled off of the Diazepam infusion around 10 AM and has continued to be seizure free.

The Hospital called Gwen just past 7 AM and she recently talked to them again.

He is having his IV pulled and will be heading out shortly.

The Hospital has increased his Keppra from 750 mg to 1500 mg three times daily.

We will have our own Vet/Emergency Team review the records once they are sent over and re-visit with the neurologist here his case once more.

Puppies having seizures is most often a hereditary condition or trauma based. There has been zeo indication of any trauma and we know that his liver and kidney values are good and that these are not the cause or contributing factors. It is so rare for it to be a tumour and there has been no reason to believe that there has been a toxin exposure prior to him coming into rescue and none of his continuous testing has supported that being the case either.

What we can and are working hard to do is to manage the seizures and give him quality of life. This is also the case with his marked bilateral hip subluxation secondary to hip dysplasia. It is always going to be and has to be about quality of life, not quantity.

He has had a generous sponsor for January that will cover the cost of his bills and with the additional Keppra being added to his med regime; his monthly bills will now be closer to $600 and if anyone may consider being a sponsor for February for him, donations can be sent via PayPal to gwen@birchhaven.org or via email transfer to gwen@birchhaven.org

Thanks in advance for any consideration!

On December 9th, Mr. Oslo was in for his latest recheck. He weighed 40.40 Kgs(88.88 pounds).

We also re-tested his Pheno levels along with his Liver values and discussed when it would be safe/ideal to consider neutering him, if at all.

Per his Vet:
“Phenobarbital level for Oslo at 82 which is within therapeutic level.

No change needed as long as his seizures controlled. He has a very mild increase of phosphorus and creatine Kinase (likely from seizures activities).”

Today, December 30th, one month from when he had his last cluster seizures; @ around 9:30 AM, he had a seizure; then another one at 12:58 PM and then a third one just after that. He was given rectal Diazepam and then taken to the Emergency Hospital.

He was placed on a Diazepam IV infusion and will remain on it until AM.

This poor dog cannot catch a break.

Please keep him in your thoughts as well as his caring foster home for as much as I love him, the connection plus bonding that he and they have had together; is making this separation/situation even more difficult.

Another pic! Miss Sleet is so affectionate.

As we enter a very rainy XMAS Eve and are under a severe weather warning, The Boerskins wanted to send out a truly heartfelt THANK YOU to all of the special Secret Santa’s that stepped up to give the BHRR doggies a truly lovely XMAS! THANK YOU!

While we had two people that defaulted on their promise to help spoil the BHRR doggies, we had amazing Santa Elves that stepped up to assist The Boerskins in ensuring that each BHRR doggie would have a really wonderful Holiday!

It came down to the wire and I picked up the last three lovely SS’s today afer work and spent several hours getting the gorgeous SS pressie(s) to their respective foster homes in time for Christmas Eve!

While we will not be doing our usual traditional Christmas Eve Photo shoot, we did want to share a picture of the miraculous 3 Blind/Deaf Mice of BHRR’s Sleet with Mason taken just now.

She was the one that we thought we would lose first and she is still going strong and turned 2 in October.

As most are aware her brother BHRR’s Glacier was lost to us earlier this year due to IS complications and her equally beloved brother, our Summit, lost recently due to his heart.

DM Danes are not rare as so many backyard breeders plus puppymillers state and while they are incredibly special – not just due to their beautiful selves; they are riddled with so many health plus behavioural issues almost 100% of the time.

We are now responsible for the 3 Musketeers and who knows what the future may hold for at least two of them due to how DM they are. Yet, we not only understand the behavioural and/or medical conditions that they come with; we accept them and we adore them for who they are and we remain beyond humbled and blessed to have a village surround them with such kindness.

We will ensure that they live their best lives!

This is why BHRR has existed for just shy of 25 years and why we are needed……

From our home to all of our friends, families plus supporters, the merriest and safest, happiest, warmest and best of Christmas Eve wishes are being sent to all of you!

BHRR’s Maverick, the true Iron Man! – Almost 9 years young now. He is not happy that I put an xpen around my desk so I could get some XMAS wrapping done!

UPDATE on the 3 Musketeers!
*AND BHRR’s Dean & BHRR’s Rocket*

On December 8th, BHRR’s Porthos & BHRR’s Athos were in for their pre-op exams and bloodwork in preparation for being neutered – apt.’s scheduled for January 19th.
*We had already given them their all of their vaccines plus boosters, have them de-wormed monthly plus they are on monthly flea/tick/heartworm meds etc.*

BHRR’s Porthos weighed 44.90 Kgs(98.78 pounds)
BHRR’s Athos weighed 44.20 Kgs(97.24 pounds)

Unfortunately, the blood-work for BHRR’s Athos showed an extremely elevated WBC 27.12
*Reference Range Normal: 5.05 – 16.76 x10^9/L

He was placed on antibiotics for 10 days and two Vets said that normally values like this mean Cancer yet, one step at a time and to do the antibiotics first and repeat blood-work. He is just a puppy. Per his Vet, he clearly had been brewing an infection for a very long time, long before they arrived.

Advised to recheck just his CBC in 10 days time. He was back last night and I stayed in the parking lot waiting for his results and they are now: WBC 14.22
*Refence Range Norma: 5.05 – 16.76 x10^9/L

SO YAY! YES! SO HAPPY!

BHRR’s Aramis was in for their pre-op exam and blood-work on December 10th and she weighed 38 Kgs(83.6 pounds).

Her spay was scheduled for January 22nd yet, with the newest addition of BHRR’s Rocket – he really needs to be neutered – so, he is taking her spot. He is scheduled for his pre-op exam, bloodwork including heartworm/tick borne diseases and vaccines on January 2nd. With him being super skinny – emaciated, I am not keen on neutering him or vaccinating him any sooner than need be.

So, if he is not ready, we may move BHRR’s Aramis back to that spot – the Hospital is booking into March now and the Hospital that I am working at is booking into April – or we will move BHRR’s Dean into that spot. His neuter apt. along with boosters were rescheduled from yesterday – sent in Mason’s Tango instead for his own neuter – as he has a brutal happy tail right now. We asked his own wonderful foster to bring him in to the Vet and he is on antibiotics.

Dean will now be heading in shortly for his own recheck plus boosters. We already did his pre-op exam plus bloodwork (including pre-op and heartworm/tickborne diseases) plus initial vaccines and de-worming.

It is our hope that BHRR’s Athos, BHRR’s Dean and BHRR’s Rocket can all be successfully rehabilitated and placed up for adoption at some point.

Here are the 3 Musketeers(two are deaf/visually impaired and Mr. Athos has a slight visual impairment) enjoying the recently expanded side yard!

Today, we removed BHRR’s Coupe’s staples and he is doing wonderfully!

Come January, he will be coming up due for his annual and a recheck and from there, he will be ready to make his own special announcement!

It has been a long journey Mr. Coupe yet, you have been incredible and you are going to make a great home a great addition!

This is documentation of BHRR’s Olive’s weight from EVC since she arrived into rescue. She went from 62 KGs(136.4 pounds) to 78 KGs(171.6 pounds).  As of December 12th, she has come back to us from her perma-foster home and we are working closely with her Vet Teams to get her back on track with her weight/health.

The Vet that saw her December 7th, advised that should her weight not get back on track; after closely evaluating what/how much food/treats she was being given in addition to her moving regime of walks; we should then consider doing a T4 blood-test.

We will post an update in March – three months after her return and when she is coming up due for her next recheck. We like to do rechecks on our palliative dogs, minimally every 3 months to ensure that they are living their best quality filled lives.

BHRR’s Rocket. This is how skinny – emaciated – the poor boy is.

Has anxiety issues and boundary/respect issues with people and dogs.

Came from a substance abuser home. The man is going through a divorce and has room-mates, fed the dog ‘when he could’, when Cassy and I went to pick him upon Sunday December 13th; the dog had not been let outside in 26 hours.

Needs to seriously decompress.

Thank you again to Leanne and her daughter Cameron for stepping up to be his special Secret Santa and giving him a new name for a new beginning!

BHRR’s Miss Lilly(Deaf/Visually Impaired)
AVAILABLE FOR ADOPTION!

She says dragon stuffies make great pillows!

She also says ‘what couch rule!’ along with Matrix – you can see him!

I apologise for the lack of posts this week.

In being busy ensuring auction items were getting to the winners, preparing to start a new Career position, conversing with the BHRR BOD Team re: some matters and not 1, yet 2 HUGE dog situations along with 6 dogs having gone to the Vet this week; it has been SO busy.

I cannot believe that we are Saturday!

I hope to be able to post more tomorrow and as BHRR has always believed in sharing the good, the bad, the great and the ugly; we shall continue to do so.

BHRR’s Olso!
8 month old Cane Corso

December 2020

I JUST love this picture his wonderful perma-foster Mama sent our way!

BHRR’s Olso!

8 month old Cane Corso
(IS & marked bilateral hip subluxation secondary to hip dysplasia)

Yesterday, his wonderful perma-foster home met up with me so that I could hand over his special Secret Santa goodies!

Thank you to Karen once again for being his truly amazing special Secret Santa!

We still have 16 amazing Secret Santa’s outstanding and here is a list of the drop-off locations/times up to December 21st as I need time to get most of these WOW items to the dogs foster homes!

BHRR’s Oslo is back at the Vet tomorrow for his next recheck and to pick up more Keppra meds that had been added to his seizure med regime when he last cluster seized on November 30th.

We have covered his December bills – they are almost $600/month with the additional medications – from our recent online Auction.

We are seeking sponsorship for him for the month of January if anyone may consider his worthy cause to support!

On December 8th, we were tagged by another Rescue in re: to a special needs Great Dane needing urgent assistance.

~2 – we feel he is more like 15 months. This is a male, unaltered special needs Great Dane that the O. thinks they have had for about a year.

He is being re-homed due to a divorce. The information posted said he is about 120 pound. In the one pic posted he looks quite thin and I would say ~65-70 pounds.

He is also due for vaccines, Rabies – O. says December 25th, yet, there is no prior vaccine history records being handed over as the O. said that they do not have a Veterinarian.

Per the home, the dog has anxiety issues – barking, not like being left alone – along with lack of training and 2 times has made a mouth connection over food. Did not break skin.

Some additional comments by an assessment made by the group that went to see him and posted seeking assistance for him is below:

____________________________________________________

Our assessment: we believe there are limitations to sight and hearing but was able to have the dog respond to being called by name and hand signals with some patience. NO manners (barks for attention, jumps, nips (no mark or broken skin) when frustrated on leash/restrained. Moderate anxiety (was told he was previously crate trained but not for the last year with the current owner) dog is currently given free roam of the house and property (is allowed to jump through an open porch window to come and go as he pleases- we don’t believe he is walked on leash). We believe anxiety would resolve or greatly improve with proper boundaries/safe place and exercise. The home is not stable or safe (was informed room-mates have substance abuse issues and the environment of the home changes quickly) and he is deteriorating. He needs a very experienced handler who is comfortable providing the structure this boy never had. We don’t feel that he is aggressive just frustrated and pushy, very puppy like but in a Dane body. We were told he has lived with children and a small-med dog in the past, but we would not recommend placement with either, until a structured decompression period has passed and he can be properly assessed.

BHRR’s Volt!

ADOPTED!

So much I want and feel I need to say yet, I am just a wee bit choked up right now….

This was really one of the most loveliest and meant to be approved adoptions yet, it was also one that I did a truly rare well up while I was still at the home visit.

Kept my head down, hat pulled down low and whispered as I kissed Miss Volt good-bye that I loved her very much and that so many came together to see her successfully rehabilitated and that she is now where she is meant to be for her amazing future….

We took so much flack from a few that felt that this outstanding beautiful girl should have been put to sleep over us coming together to help her be the awesome dog she is today – happy and healthy – and now adopted!

This is what we do, why we are here – to help those dogs that others cannot or will not and our mandate has been to be strongly focused on the special needs since our inception in 1996.

BHRR’s Volt – there shall never be the right words that I could possibly type here to tell people who felt you were not deserving; that they could not have been more wrong.

We never gave up, you never gave up and your fans and not just your BHRR village yet, army never gave up! So many rallied around you and assisted us in paying your enormous bills and when you were ready, giving you play dates and play visits, demonstrating that the world has far more caring loving hands/arms over hurting ones.

You are the best ambassador to your breed and your forever loving adoptive home does plan to tap into your potential for therapy work and even agility!

Your new wonderful family is going to help you write your next fantastic chapters and novels and books and stories!

My heart is so light and heavy all at once and that tightness in my throat is only because I adore you and you have been part of my family for so long and shall always be forever more….yet, today, was the day that we all worked so hard for…..what we always wanted for you and yes, you lived a grand life with us. However, now, you will live that grand life with others that already have fallen in love with you!

Thank you again to this really lovely home in considering adoption and in going through our thorough adoption process.

This makes 5 BHRR approved adoptions since October 25th – and our re-opening due to COVID – and that makes 5 great dogs in 5 great adoptive homes for the holiday season!

AND so worth the long drive to see Miss Volt be adopted!

Miss Volt is traveling like a pro!

Relaxed and calm and now having a snooze!

Another photo!

BHRR’s Volt!

As I was loading up the car; she made it clear I was not leaving without her!

I left the door open so she could run around and zip while I packed the car; yet, nope….she just stayed in the car.

As many are aware, when she first arrived, she was so stressed over getting into the car plus car rides. I have spent significant time setting her up for success and now she loves it!

We are on our way!!! Today, is the long drive to do her home-visit for a possible approved adoption.

Should this be her right home; will have to make sure they continue to set her up for success as I do not want her associating the car with me ‘abandoning’ her.

On a side note, when I arrived home last night, I spent almost 5 hours working on the auction.

I now only have a small number of wonderful people left to collect payments and make arrangements for the items to be picked up either from me or from the generous donators.

I shall finish this up when I am back home tomorrow night.

Once again, thank you to everyone for their patience plus their understanding as I co-ordinate many fabu items!

Gentle Reminder: if you have not yet paid, per the auction rules, we request this to be done within 72 hours.

Re: Miss Volt, we will update as we can!

Happy Saturday!!!

His wonderful foster home went home with more rectal diazepam too.

He is back next week for his recheck and for his foster to pick up more Phenobarbital plus Gabapentin.

He remains on the Deramaxx.

We are still in need of $425 for his December sponsorship. We have had $75 so generously donated to date.

We are also short $700 for Miss Olive’s own December sponsorship. We had a caring soul cover her next fond of Proin medications! THANK YOU!

NOTICE:

BHRR does not adopt out during the XMAS season due to our position that it is not in the best interest of any new addition being added during such a busy, exciting and somewhat stressful time for many.

Quite a few other Rescues, Shelters, Pounds etc. have also begun to follow a similar protocol to what we have been doing for almost 25 years.

Our XMAS Shut down period for this year is from Friday December 18th, 2020 to Sunday January 3rd, 2021 inclusive.

Any applications received during this time will be processed/reviewed as of Monday January 4th, 2021!

As always during this time, BHRR is available 24/7 for requests for assistance of animals in need.

We shall also network accordingly for, as the local Great Dane/Giant Breed Rescue since 1996, the welfare of the animals are our top priority.

We do not wish to see any animal end up in a disreputable place of which sadly there are far too many out there.

Thank you for your continued understanding – The BHRR Team

BHRR’s Coupe!

Enjoying his own ‘feel good’ drugs!

He is doing very well post op from his diagnosis of bilateral elbow ununited anconeal process with secondary osteoarthritis and then Dr. Philibert did arthroscopy of both elbows and removal of the anconeus processes.

Those shaved legs on him make him look positively adorable!

BHRR’s Symba!

Today, we are off for his 2 week post-op TPLO surgery check up and to get his staples out!

This is his face in the car as we are waiting for our apt!

He is NOT happy to be taken away from the warmth of the fire places and especially his Jumbo Mr. Bear Stuffie!

In 6 weeks time, he will be back for his post-op x-rays and from there we shall know when we can do his right leg – per his ortho specialist Dr. Philibert, he actually has two blown cruciates, not one from what we were told he had prior to coming into rescue. Poor boy…

Yet, it is all about looking forward and taking it one step at a time! He will get everything he needs plus more with us.

He is such a delight and we remain eternally grateful to all that donated to his first TPLO surgery….

We are now working on saving up for his second surgery.

We are also taking it one day at a time fighting to keep our doors open….we have so many to thank that have been standing strong by our sides as we fight this good battle to do so.

BHRR’s Coupe’s Invoice

As we continue to believe in full accountability and transparency, here is Mr. Coupe’s invoice from his ortho surgeries today at Liston Animal Hospital.

Per Dr. Philibert, his ortho specialist:

“His diagnosis was bilateral elbow ununited anconeal process with secondary osteoarthritis. Dr. Philibert did arthroscopy of both elbows and removal of the anconeus processes.”

They removed golf ball size bone fragments and chips from both elbows. POOR dude.

He is going to feel so much better.

I am now hunkered down for overnight duty with my newest patient, Mr. Coupe and will post an update tomorrow…

He will be in for a recheck and staple removal in 2 weeks time and come January, he will have his annual and in 8 weeks time from today, if all goes well; he will have his own special announcement to make!

The rehabilitation journey has been long and he has needed two major surgeries since he arrived; treated for HW, has two bullets inside of him that the specialists say is best left alone AND through it all he has been the nicest, sweetest amazing boy!

We also did his nails and had his ears cleaned while he was in surgery.

Unfortunately, no surgical pictures this time around! Meant to ask!!!

UPDATE: he is now out of surgery…..they will call when he is waking up!

Thank you to the rescue angels that donated to his bills!

We are now ONLY $450 short!

BHRR’s Coupe(NewfX)
#GivingTuesday

****UPDATE: ONLY $450 MORE NOW NEEDED****

**As it was still dark when I left to drop him off, no photo from this AM taken. This is one from October.**

Today, he was dropped off to have his own long awaited – has been waiting since March – yet, COVID-19 had other plans…. – for his bilateral elbow arthroscopic ortho surgeries and possible bone debridement with Dr. Philibert.

I have also asked to have his nails and his ears cleaned while he is under anesthesia.

I know that we have been sounding like that horrible broken record on a loop yet, the animals continue to need their BHRR Village plus community.

As only a few know; I had to resign from my own Career position in October and this has also had a huge devastating impact upon our rescue efforts for BHRR has been mostly funded out of our own pockets.

We are still short about $750 for his bills.
