My last post of my night!

Time for folks to think about what they plan on giving up for 14 days in our 9th Annual ‘Give it up 4 Autumn’ Fundraiser!

Starts Thursday November 5th and we already have 4 people signed up to date! Be creative! Some people have even done a swear jar in the past putting money each time they or someone in their office swears and then donating the monies raised at the end of the 14 days.

All money raised shall go towards helping BHRR’s Symba and BHRR’s Coupe!

More details in the poster and please do email contactbhrr@gmail.com if you would like to be part of our 9th annual event!

Here are the blog links to BHRR’s Symba:

AND for BHRR’s Coupe

For those who wish to consider making a financial donation to their worthy causes, you can do so via PayPal gwen@birchhaven.org or via email transfer to contactbhrr@gmail.com OR you can do so directly to Liston Animal Hospital 613-591-0966

We have many many many thousands of dollars to raise and we are now set back even further as sadly, BHRR’s Oslo has needed emergency care today…..

From our home to all of our friends, family & supporters, the best of good night wishes are being sent!

BHRR’s Symba!

Someone is not caring that it is Halloween and is not even fazed by all of the sounds from the Horror Movie playing!
AND yes, the Jumbo stuffie is still his fav thing ever!

AND, on his plus BHRR’s Coupe’s behalf, we want to thank ALL of their fans, supporters plus believers for the material and financial donations made to date as we prepare for their upcoming Ortho surgeries with Dr. Philibert.

We are still short $3,000 for BHRR’s Symba’s own surgery and as many have noted we are attempting to do some flash auctions.

AND we are STILL in need of the following – listed below – in preparation for their surgeries if anyone may consider their worthy causes to support.

BHRR’s Coupe(Newfx) is scheduled – FINALLY- thanks COVID-19! – for his bone debridement and bilateral elbow arthroscopic surgery December 1st. He is also the sweet boy that we shockingly discovered no less than 2 x 9 mm bullets in him – one being in his chest – when we did x-rays plus he had to have an emergency enterotomy surgery. In addition, we have been treating him for heartworm.

BHRR’s Symba(Bull Mastiff) – pictured here – is scheduled for his TPLO surgery on November 18th.

We urgently need the below items to assist with their post-op recoveries.

1) Pinesol or Lysol
2) XL Costco Dog Beds
3) Towels
4) Paper Towels – not the scratchy/rough brown kind
5) Sleeping bags/Comforters/Duvets
6. Fabric Softener
7) Dryer Sheets
8) Donations for ongoing flash online auctions to help raise the many thousands upon thousands needed for these surgeries.
9) We need to put down 50% upon surgery drop-off and any consideration for financial donations can be made direct to Liston Animal Hospital 613-596-0966 – they both have accounts there
OR
via PayPal to gwen@birchhaven.org
OR
via email transfer to contactbhrr@gmail.com
*we just need to know the password
10) Flannel Sheets – Double or Queen

Thanks as always from our hearts for any consideration to their very worthy causes – both dogs are magnificent!

As many know we have our monitored donation shed on our lane-way at the road by our mailbox and any kind items can be dropped off in it!

If you are not able to drop off at Oxford Station, please do email us to make alternative arrangements. contactbhrr@gmail.com

BHRR’s Devin, the Bouvier!

AVAILABLE FOR ADOPTION!

He is ready to make his own special announcement!

For anyone interested in BHRR’s Devin; please read his extremely thorough blog that documents his journey while in rescue plus the type of home that we are seeking to approve for him as his forever loving adoptive one.

All of our policies, processes and procedures including an application to be completed and filled out are also found on our home website.

BHRR shall consider adoption applications ONLY from our location up to and including the area’s of Barrie & Cambridge in Ontario and up to Gatineau in the province of Quebec.

Note: as is listed on our Petfinder and home website plus in the application contract; We will not be responding to email/phone inquiries. We will ONLY review completed applications that are submitted along with the non-refundable application fee. WHICH is no way guarantees that your home shall be approved to adopt.

BHRR will NOT make exceptions to our clearly posted criteria.

BHRR’s Devin can go to a home that works part-time, full-time, works from home, semi-retired or is retired. He is another amazing versatile BHRR dog!

Health Status: HEALTHY! Per his Vet team, he will require a dental cleaning in the future – nothing that was deemed emergent/urgent for us to take care of during his time at BHRR.

Children: No homes with children under the age of 12 will be considered. He sometimes can be a bit mouthy and get excitable.

Personality/Temperament: Loving, affectionate, sweet, social, playful, quietly active – gentle, calm. Excellent leash manners. Great companion!

Previous Dog Experience: Previous dog experience is ideal yet not required if that right matched home is set up for success.

Good with Dogs: Yes, and while we would like to see him in a home with at least one other right matched personality fit dog; it is not a deal breaker. Having a strong social doggie network is most important and required. He does not like when dogs rush up to his face – have to love all of those irresponsible owners and their flexi-leads. For the most part, he is indifferent to other dogs. He does have a bff that is 11 months of age and they can play rough together – when they first meet-up.

Good With Cats: He currently resides in a foster home with a cat; yet, we would prefer a home without any cats or dogs the size of cats.

Good with Pocket Pets: Unknown yet, would not recommend. He is very interested in chasing squirrels and can easily clear a 4-4.5 foot fence, so no homes with low fencing will be considered for him.

Grooming: He is a dream to wash, do nails, ears etc. and regular professional grooming is mandatory. Do not apply if you are not going to do this. We have worked to get him looking his best under the care of an incredible professional groomer.

Car: He is great in the car! Gets in readily and settles down beautifully!

Housebroken/Crate Trained: He is housebroken and crate trained.

Obedience: His manners are truly quite lovely.

Activities Suited For Him: He has the perfect temperament to do therapy work and his amazing self deserves to be shared with the world.

Loves & Bad Habits: He loves his humans and to be around them. He is not an in your face kind of dog. He is the perfect strolling and walking partner and then the at home movie, tv show companion. His foster mom says he has a shoe fetish!

He is a super low maintenance dog – other than his grooming needs!

He loves to NOT sleep on soft bedding!!! Not good for his elbows or joints being a larger breed dog.

He will play fetch!

Is he the perfect dog? No…no dog is yet he is as close to bomb proof as any dog can be. He is fantastic plus!

It is going to be important to ensure that he does not get fat. We have worked hard to get him to lose weight and to build up much needed muscle mass/toning.

Anxieties/Worries: He really does not have any.

Thank you immensely ONCE more to Rick Millette Millsphoto on Facebook; for the absolutely stunning pics!

Thank you’s also to Cassy/John for being his fabu temp foster home!

BHRR’s Walter

ADOPTED!

Mr. Walter, this was another bittersweet adoption for me.

My heart wanted to call you mine and never let you go!

Yet, I knew that when you were ready to be placed up for adoption, that you no longer needed me….you wanted me; yet, no longer needed me.

AND we must let go of the ones that no longer need us so, we can help another that does need us.

It has been an absolute honour helping you to become the best boy you are and your future is so bright.

Closing a chapter is tough, any great foster home can tell you how hard it is to let go, and you make the 422nd time I have done the best thing ever – the right thing too! – by letting one of my fosters – you go!

My heart and soul goes into each and every dog that is in need of our highly specialised programs and you and I will always be connected….we will always have that bond like no other yet; now it is time for you to begin a new exciting wonderful chapter and keep living your best life!

You are already missed yet, know that I am as much excited plus happy as I am through my sniffling tears for as it is said; parting is such sweet sorrow!

Congratulations to you Mr. Walter, such a handsome incredibly sweet blue Great Dane whose charm, kindness, gentleness plus big heart is beyond special! Your determination to live through arriving into rescue so beyond sick; is also a testament to your rock solid inner strength. You have such a goofy silly mischievous side and it is unbelievably endearing.

Thank you to his forever loving adoptive home for all of their patience as we went through our extremely thorough adoption screening process.

SO worth the drive!!

ND as of about 9:15 AM today, we have been on the road driving to do BHRR’s Walters home-visit for a possible approved adoption….

We shall update as we can!

This picture was taken the day I picked him up from his BHRR emerge temp foster home to then bunk down with The Boerskins.

Stay tuned….someone will be making his own special announcement shortly!

BHRR’s Devin, the Bouvier had his booster apt. yesterday!

He weighed 83.38 pounds. He has been on a weight loss, muscle mass/toning building program and he is getting to where we want him to be.

After his Vet appointment – he was loved by all! – he was then off for his professional photo session.

Thank you immensely to Rick Millette Millsphoto on Facebook; for the absolutely WOW pics!

Doesn’t he look positively stunning?! I could not be more happy with how great his professional groom session went with Melissa.

UPDATE: BHRR’s Oslo (7 month old Cane Corso)

In the space of 15 hours, he had 7 seizures.

He was sent home last night when the Hospital closed – with a catheter and Diazepam to administer via IV should he cluster seizure or have a prolonged seizure.

He was also increased on his Phenobarbital to 120 mg BID.

He then had a seizure at 9:27 pm, lasting about 40 seconds.

This morning he was back at the Hospital for another day of seizure watch.

The good news is that his blood work came back and is normal so his liver is tolerating the meds well!

We raised thanks to amazing rescue angels enough money to cover his Vet bills from yesterday and we now need to pay for today’s Bills which include more phenobarbital and diazepam sent home with his foster to give if needed.

Donations for anyone that may consider his so deserving cause to support; can be made via PayPal to gwen@birchhaven.org
OR via email transfer to contactbhrr@gmail.com

*we just need to know the password*

This is sweet Mr. Oslo last night sporting his yellow vet wrapped catheter!

Thank you again to his temp foster home for being so wonderful and for temp fostering.

UPDATE: He has had 6 seizures today to date.

Per his Vet, the seizures that he had in the Hospital lasted no more than 3 minutes.

She gave him one very light dose of valium and a light top up dose of phenobarbital with the first seizure, and one additional top up dose of phenobarbital with the second seizure.

We are awaiting the results of the bloodwork to see how his liver is handling the Phenobarbital.

THANK you to everyone that has been so unbelievably kind, caring and generous to send and post supportive words AND for the financial consideration to his Vet Bills.

We are forever indebted for your consideration!

UPDATE: Sadly, Mr. Oslo has had yet, another seizure event.

The good news is that he is presenting well between his seizures.

We are SOOOOOOOOO beyond grateful and appreciative and humbled by the words of support and the financial contributions to assist with his Vet Bills.

Donations can continue to be sent direct via PayPal to gwen@birchhaven.org

OR via email transfer to contactbhrr@gmail.com
*we just need to know the password.

We will update as we can…..

*URGENT* *DONATIONS NEEDED*

BHRR’s Oslo, the 7 month month old puppy has been rushed to the Vet Hospital by his great foster family.

He has now had four seizures since early this AM and has been admitted to the Hospital for care.

He has been in our rescue since October 11th with no seizure activity.

He has been taking his medications – was increased by his previous Vet prior based upon his blood results – prior to us taking him into rescue.

He was scheduled for his repeat blood work tomorrow AM to check his phenobarbital levels; yet, sadly; today; he has had seizure activity.

If anyone can spare, even $5 towards his emergency vet care – we will find out if people can donate direct to the Hospital they use in Amherstview – yet, donations would be so humbly and gratefully received by:

PayPal to gwen@birchhaven.org

OR via email transfer to contactbhrr@gmail.com
*we just need to know the password*

We will update as we can.

His foster mama has been a solid strong rock for Mr. Oslo as seizures can be very scary and stressful to the animal and to the humans.

Thank you in advance for your kind consideration to this sweet boy!

ISO: A Professional Photographer that may be willing to donate some of their time plus talent to take some photo’s of BHRR’s Devin, The Bouvier.

He has his booster apt. this Saturday and it shall not be too long after that that he will be ready to make his own special announcement!

This is a picture from his professional groom session with the fabu Melissa!

If a professional photographer may be open to donating some of their skills to assist us in capturing Mr. Devin in all of his handsomeness; please do email contactbhrr@gmail.com

BHRR’s Oslo, the Cane Corso puppy!

He has been settling in beautifully with his awesome temp foster home.

He has not had any seizures since his arrival and we have had him into the Vet to obtain some flea/tick/heartworm meds along with de-worming. We also picked up more Gabapentin for him.

He weighed 36 kgs(79.2 pounds).

Being so straight legged in the hind end; he lacks rear angulation and a quick neuro test; determined that he is weaker in the one back leg over the other.

He is getting plenty of appropriate level of exercise as we work to build up his muscle mass and tone to make him stronger.

As he adjusts to the higher dosing of the phenobarbital; he is also going through some understandable ataxia. In the next week; he will be back for a repeat blood test to check his levels to help determine if this adjusted dosing remains best for him.

As a growing puppy (7 months of age); he will need dosing adjustments.

We are also closely monitoring his eyes as they are sometimes red and a bit runny so when he goes in for his recheck blood test, we are going to have his eyes checked. His left eye does have more prominent haws. Yet, If he needs to go in earlier for them; we will make it happen!

He has been making safe bubble COVID-19 human plus doggie friends and he is in excellent hands with his foster family and we continue to ensure that he lacks for nothing.

Thank you to his wonderful foster family for everything!

**NOT AVAILABLE FOR ADOPTION**

As some are aware we have been working on assisting three Great Dane Puppies – we had an amazing suggestion to call them our Three Musketeers!

So, we have BHRR’s Porthos – white male Great Dane, Deaf/Visually Impaired.

BHRR’s Aramis – female white Great Dane, Deaf/Visually Impaired

BHRR’s Athos – male mantle Great Dane

ETA being worked on.

More details to come and all three have amazing special Secret Santa’s and they are NOT AVAILABLE FOR ADOPTION!

BHRR’s Symba!

My last post of my night is a special request on his behalf.

I know that we already made a post seeking urgent items in preparation for his and BHRR’s Coupe’s huge upcoming ortho surgeries; yet; there is one thing that is a specific request for this sweet boy.

As many know, I have posted several times re: his love and comfort of the jumbo stuffie here.

We are now in search of another jumbo stuffie – 4-5 feet in height for him to have post-op.

As we shall have to clean this one; rotating with a new one as needed during his recovery; will mean he would never be without. When we wash this one; his is like the toddler sitting outside the washer plus dryer; being a suck until he gets it back.

We have to restrict his mobility during his recovery and if anyone has a jumbo stuffie they no longer wish to keep; please consider one big Bull Mastiff baby to donate to?

Also here is our Amazon Wish List Link for other items needed:

On that note, from our home to all of our friends, family plus supporters; warmest of good night wishes are being sent!

AND yes, we are still working on renovations!

Having a nap in her forever loving adoptive home!

BHRR’s Devaney is ADOPTED!

Miss Devaney is our Deaf/Visually Impaired Lab puppy.

Immense thanks being sent out to this home for their patience as we went through our extremely thorough adoption process.

BHRR has second to no other group adoption success rates. We were 100% in over 10 years of operating and now are 98% as we get ready to enter year 25.

Thanks also sent being sent out to Miss Devaney’s temp foster home for doing all that they did for her!

This is our first adoption since COVID-19 hit and we closed down, therefore, it is truly wonderful to see one of our fantastic dogs end up in such a great home.

Getting pics was such a fun time!! The laughter being done by all!

Congratulations to this home and to Miss Devaney!

BHRR Walter’s home-visit for his own possible approved adoption is October 25th. We will update as we can.

My last post of my night!

This special cutie arrives tomorrow!

He is the 6.5 month old male Cane Corso that has Idiopathic Seizures.

Drive safe wishes to the amazing kind hearted Volunteers for helping to transport him AND thank you to Judy/Ron for stepping up to be his fabu temp foster parents!

From our home to all of our friends, family and supporters, the best of good night wishes are being sent!

AND we are soon on our way!!!

Tonight is Miss Devaney’s (Deaf & Visually Impaired Lab puppy) home-visit for a possible approved adoption.

We shall update as we can.

*NOTICE*:

BHRR shall be closed for the intake of adoption applications and shall not approve any adoptions from Tuesday October 27th to Monday November 2nd. We do not adopt out around the Halloween season and many other Rescues, shelters, pounds etc. have also begun to follow a similar protocol.

We do not believe it is in the best interest of the animals in our program, especially for dark coloured dogs.
During this time, BHRR is available 24/7, as always, for requests for assistance of animals in need.

NOTICE:

Unfortunately, we find ourselves having to address the below issues once again. Every few years it seems we must re-visit this despite being very clear on our website, Facebook and Petfinder as to how we operate.

This last 24 hours we have had not one yet, two extremely unpleasant moments.

Let us be extremely clear that if people continue to disrespect what is openly stated; we will involve legal and take the necessary action(s).

Our camera’s are running.

1) we are a foster based rescue that operates out of our home and our approved fosters. NOWHERE does it state that you can just drop by, visit or ‘get’ a dog because you want one.

It is NOT even ok to leave a voice message as a ‘courtesy heads up’ that you are on your way or will be on your way shortly to our PRIVATE property which is our home.

We would never do this to you; so do not expect it to be ok to do it to us. We get so little quality family time as it is and your blatant disregard for being mindful of our family time is not going to be tolerated.

We have a very thorough adoption process which is and has been posted over and over and over again in the last shy of 25 years.

All of the steps to be considered for a BHRR approved adoption is found on our websites and even in the application. We have done our job to have the information there. It is now up to you to read and follow the instructions.

We have posted many times over that only completed applications shall be considered/reviewed. We are NOT going to respond to ANY inquiries sent via email, text, voice message, Petfinder or Facebook. This is and has been posted many times over. So Stop. Spamming via email, text, phone, and/or Petfinder is not going to receive a response. They will be deleted and if you continue, marked as spam/junk/blocked.  It is equally NOT acceptable for you to come uninvited; to our home, private property with or without any completed application in hand.

As we also post, if a dog is listed on Petfinder, on our Website or on Facebook page as being ‘Available For Adoption’, YES, that dog is still available. We directly state that we work to keep everything up to date.

We have equally posted many times over that we are not going to make exceptions to our adoption contract, processes, policies and procedures.

2) the steps to surrender a dog is also openly stated on our website.

Do NOT leave a message and then only a couple of hours later show up at our home expecting us to drop everything and put your request above all of the other needy dogs that are equally ‘urgent’.

This is our home. This is private property.

AND do not say to one of us that you left many emails or voice messages re: said dog when we communicate closely with each other and know that this is a lie.

YOU are making our work more difficult that it ever should be and trust me, operating a highly r/q Rescue is damn hard.

BHRR is not about you; it is about the animals and please allow us to do our jobs; our non paying, 24/7, 365 days a year jobs.

We have been doing this since 1996; know what we are doing, are the experts in what we do from rescue to transport, to rehabilitation to adoption, from feeding to vetting, to training to behavioural modification and so much more.

If you want to adopt; please follow the process. If you have a dog in need; please follow the process.

PENDING ADOPTION!

Another, I ‘do not see a foster home allowing their foster on the couch’ photo!

She is in an amazing foster home and we cannot thank them enough for all that they have done and are doing for her!

Miss Devaney’s home-visit for a possible approved adoption is scheduled for Thursday October 8th.

On that wonderful note, from our home to all of our friends, family & supporters, the warmest of good night wishes are being sent!

The NEXT IN NEED:

This is a 6.5 month old male Cane Corso puppy that has idiopathic seizures.

I have spent the past few weeks talking/supporting this home via phone and email; hoping that his owners would become comfortable in working to manage the seizures.

If we can help keep dogs with their wonderful owners, that is what we would love to see.

However, they have reached a level of being overwhelmed with quite a few other factors coming into play so, they have made a really selfless choice wanting to surrender him to our highly focused and experienced special needs rescue.

Please join us in surrounding this home with kindness.

ETA October 10th

BHRR’s Miss Olive

Our 1.5 year old palliative Saint Bernard

She was in for a recheck for her eyes and for some other medical concerns on the 29th at EVC.

She will remain on eye meds, has been placed on antibiotics for a hot spot along with some cream for her private parts that has some urine scalding plus saliva stains.

AND thanks to a really generous loving angel BHRR’s Miss Olive’s Food/Vet bills have now been covered for the month of November!

We are currently spending almost $900 a month on her meds – Proin, Gabapentin, Deramaxx, Eye Lube plus fish based food. She also lovingly has a special Secret Santa to all her very own now.
We shall be seeking a December sponsor(s) for her if anyone may consider supporting her….

We will have her back for her next recheck in December plus she will be due for her next professional grooming then.

We continue to work hard to give her the best quality filled life possible.

She is always a big hit at EVC!
