My last post of my night!

Even by putting across an xpen to keep them out of the kitchen for safety, trying to bake some famous homemade Boerskins cinnamon buns meets with a fan club!

Our three blind/deaf mice and you can see their Mama – BHRR’s Meadow in the background.

We want to send out our biggest and most heartfelt of thanks to everyone that stepped up to be special Secret Santa’s and to those that sent extra pessies to help make sure that no one was missed! YOU have given the BHRR dogs a really amazing XMAS! One that so many have never experienced in their lives of safety, health, happiness and love. THANK you!

I know people are waiting for our traditional Xmas Eve Photo shoot yet, in working XMAS Eve and throughout the Holidays, this photo shoot will have to be delayed for a few more days!

Thank you also from our hearts to each and every person that stepped up to assist us with the blind/deaf mice! They are now over 14 months of age and only BHRR’s Glacier is beginning to show some of the DM health signs of IS at this time……

I shall also be removing Summit’s remaining eye – he does not see from it – yet, our hope to allow him to keep it, has not panned out as we wished. He also is battling chronic eye infections and is in great discomfort these days. He will join his siblings who had double eye eneucleations earlier in 2019.

Without all of you, they would not have been able to have this opportunity of a great quality filled life and they live their best lives every day!

They romp and roam in our 3+ acres with all of the other dogs and we continue to not treat them as being different.

Their noses are finely honed in with the scent training I have done with them and their touch training continues to excel.

From our home to all of our friends, family and supporters, please know how much we appreciate you and do be safe out there over the next day or so….the weather and roads shall be brutal. Good night from us to all of you!

BHRR’s Percival VIDEO’S!

He is recovering wonderfully from his neuter and on January 3rd shall be in for his Lepto/Lymes Vaccines. From there, he will be scheduled for professional photo’s and his boosters.

After that, he shall be ready to make his special announcement!

BHRR’s Percival, as with all of our dogs, shall only be adopted to that right matched personality fit home meant for him! He will only go to a home that will ensure that he is not neglected ever again. A home that has the financial means to stay on top of his food and seasonal allergies.

He is now close to $3,000 for us to work on his successful rehabilitation. His skin and ear infections plus anal fistula’s have all be treated and he remains on his Apoquel plus his Doxycycline treatment having also been diagnosed as being Lymes Positive.

Thank you to all that have stood strong by us over the past shy of 24 years, enabling us to do right by each and every dog that has needed us and understanding that r/q Rescue is not ever about winning any popularity contests.

BHRR’s Percival, Merry Christmas to you and thank you to your temp foster Mama for taking such excellent care of you!

He now knows how to play with toys, is still nervous of stairs – will go down yet not up – yet one baby step at a time and the healthier he has become, the even more wonderful he has also become!

You are going to be a true treat to that right matched forever loving home when it is your time, Mr. P.!

Technically, it is not considered being on the couch – and therefore breaking the no couch rule – if ones front legs are still on the floor right?!

BHRR’s Granite, one of our BHRR Puppy Pile at Sunday’s 8th annual BHRR Thank You Potluck!

BHRR’s Rain says that she would like to shout out to all of the amazing folks that attended our 8th Annual Chain of Success Potluck, the biggest and most appreciative of THANKS!

We raised almost $140 for BHRR’s Caramel and will make another post re: him shortly plus we had 4 x 22 pound bags of his special food donated!

Thank you to Elaine for donating her portion – $50 – of the 50/50 back to help BHRR’s Caramel!

We had an incredible amount of delicious food brought to the potluck, awesome conversation with fantastic people! Though, we had a cancellation – we missed you! and a no show, we still had shy of 25 people make the drive out to hang with the big dawgs!

People that have become a huge part of our own hearts in so many ways….

We are beyond humbled and grateful to all that brought their Secret Santa’s plus Empties to support our 2nd Annual Holiday Season Drive – I shall post a pic!!

We are deeply touched by the Pinesol and the Paper Towels and the kindness shown to both the dogs and The Boerskins today!

Though, I shall not have a Holiday Season myself – working straight through until January 2nd, today more than filled my soul with so much Christmas spirit and joy!

BHRR’s Burst rocked her first big social event as did BHRR’s Mollie!

Sean & I just love this year end event….while it is a lot of prep….to be able to then relax and mingle with wonderful people and dogs is the best!

From our home to all of our friends, family & supporters, beautiful good night wishes are being sent!

My last post of my night!

Guess who is excited?!

Guess why?

Someone is being busted out tomorrow! BHRR’s Caramel!

After receiving such wonderful care for ~6 months at the shelter from being owner surrendered, he is heading to BHRR.

From our home to all of our friends, family and supporters, the warmest of good night wishes are being sent and a gentle reminder to please make sure that your pets are kept warm and safe on this bitterly cold night…..

NOTICE:

BHRR does not adopt out during the XMAS season due to our position that it is not in the best interest of any new addition being added during such a busy, exciting and somewhat stressful time for many.

Quite a few other Rescues, Shelters, Pounds etc. have also begun to follow a similar protocol to what we have been doing for almost 25 years.

Our XMAS Shut down period for this year is from Friday December 20th, 2019 to Friday January 3rd, 2020 inclusive.

Any applications received during this time will be processed/reviewed as of Saturday January 4th, 2020!

As always during this time, BHRR is available 24/7 for requests for assistance of animals in need. We shall also network accordingly for, as the local Great Dane/Giant Breed Rescue since 1996, the welfare of the animals are our top priority. We do not wish to see any animal end up in a disreputable place of which sadly there are far too many out there.

Thank you for your continued understanding – The BHRR Team

BHRR’s Percival (3 year old Fox Red Lab) had his de-twinkle apt. today!

Everything went great, he is such a good boy and now he is recovering by being safely tucked back in with his lovely foster Mama.

I also microchipped him today and in about two weeks time, he will have a recheck and some more vaccines(Lymes/Lepto). 3-4 weeks after that he will have his boosters.

He is doing fantastic on the fish based food and taking his remaining meds of the Doxy plus Apoquel like a champ! He is eating so well now. Runs over to his crate and sits so nicely.

After he obtains his boosters at the end of January, he should be ready to then make his special announcement!

BHRR’s Percival VIDEO – December 15th, 2019

Loving all of the toys in his Foster home!

He shall be scheduled to be neutered shortly and in the New Year be ready to make his special announcement!

His Vetting to date is over $2,500 with all that he has needed to get him healthy.

Doesn’t he look wonderful?!

We now have a pic!

Next in Need!

~3 year old fawn with some merle Male Great Dane named ‘Caramel’

Was an owner surrender to a shelter several months ago due to lack of time and the shelter has done an amazing job with manners, neutering him, is presently treating his bad ear infections etc.

Has had stomach issues and is on special food.

Has been good with female dogs, smaller than him male dogs – he is ~100 pounds and warms up to men quickly and woman not long afterwards.

ETA to BHRR week of December 16th & he does have a special Secret Santa!

For those that have not yet dropped off their own Secret Santa pressies – we still have 14 outstanding – please do make contact with us as we wish to make sure with your beautiful hearts that each BHRR doggie is spoiled this Holiday Season.

For many of these dogs, this shall be their first Holiday Season knowing love, warmth, a full belly, shelter and having safe harbour.

NOTE: per my post last night, I am now at the airport and heading out of the country.

As mentioned in my post last night, all auction winners have been confirmed in a post made on each auction item.

1) Please do check the items you bid on to see if you won!

2) For all of the lovely winners, please also note the pickup location(s) for your item(s) won and the date(s) if applicable for pickup. I am getting many emails – please take pity on me as all of this is posted in our rules and on each auction item! – asking where and when and people wanting all of their items picked up from one spot. Much time has been spent to make sure all the information needed was posted.

3) Please pay per the posted payment options made in the rules and on each item within the 72 hour time-frame. Once again, I am getting emails from people asking re: payment and do take mercy on me as I am one mere mortal person! Everything needed has been posted.

4) I worked long into the wee hours of the night working on the close of this auction, reaching out to all of the winners and collecting payments and putting winners in touch with the fabu donators etc. and as I am getting on one of two planes shortly – I hope! Delays due to weather, I will not be back online until late tonight to re-visit the auction and to keep working on it.

I do wish to shout out a huge heartfelt and sincere thanks to each and every rescue angel that donated to our auction. It may have been our smallest in 12 years of hosting this annual event, yet, it was filled with so much warmth and generosity thanks to each of you!!

Thank you also to every kind and caring person who shared our auction and/or bid and supported our continued efforts to keep BHRR going strong!

This is BHRR’s Percival who also wanted me to thank you on his and BHRR’s Kenai’s behalf for being there for them in their huge time of need!

May everyone have a safe and wonderful Friday!

My last post of my night!

Our 12th Annual “JUST IN TIME FOR XMAS’ Online Auction is now closed. I have contacted all winners – posted on the auction items, so please do check the item(s) that you bid on to confirm if you did win.

Payment is expected within 72 hours and the payment details have also been posted in the winning thread posts.

Final total shall be announced once all monies are collected yet, at this time looks like we are over $1,700 raised! WOW!

All money raised shall go towards helping BHRR’s Percival and this handsome young man, BHRR’s Kenai.

We know many have been wondering how things are going and we wish to thank all those that have remained patient, understanding that we are working hard 24/7 to ensure that the animals are done right by. Posting updates at the frequency that some may wish is not possible and while we are regretful that one or two find that upsetting, we cannot take time away from what the animals need, when they need us.

BHRR’s Kenai remains on Trazodone, Clomicalm and Gabapentin.

Gwennie Novel UPDATE:

1) He is not spinning as much – this tends to happen, along with the self-mutilating when he is overstimulated or anxious.

I have also noted when I am out preparing his food and I poke my head into the rec room quietly, that he will be laying down peacefully and as soon as he sees me, he will begin to spin, do that wonderful GS whine that us GS lovers know all too well and also grab at his tail, while all the time keeping his eyes on me. I passively ignore and he soon realises that ‘hey, this is not working and will stop and sulk and then wag his tail and sit calmly or walk around.’

2) He loves his crate – too much and working on him not wanting to spend so much time in there. The door remains open for him to go in and out at will and it is only closed for eating and bedtime.

Yes, it is his safe spot yet, we are very very very slowly introducing him to outside his now safe zone to small wondrous things the world has to offer.

He can go from zero to 100 very fast in the stimulation dept. and so very small on the scale, yet, as I have stated before, his inches are miles in the success dept.

3) We can now go for short walks and he is not constantly spinning, crying or trying to grab at his hind end or tail. He is chatty and talkative as we walk and I know his anxiety is a huge role in that and it is not all excitement about the walk. Inches….

4) He is loving the snow!

5) He sleeps wonderfully at night and I love how when I go to greet him at 5:00 AM, he is so happy to see me and gives me his happy GS whine. The more impatient ‘where is my breakfast Gwennie whine is not so loved by me!’

6) He can now focus and eat and drink from bowls all by himself. We had to hold the bowl for him to drink and handfeed him for awhile. He has been putting on much needed muscle mass, toning up and weight. He looks fabu!

7) He knows his name and knows to sit before eating and so, I KNOW he is in there somewhere…..deep inside that anxiety ridden traumatized mind and heart plus soul is that puppy I am working so hard to reach.

8) We now know that he suffers from IS. Epilepsy is so hard to diagnose in dogs and too many use that word when in fact it is Idiopathic seizures. We also know that with every seizure, it does affect the brain. We are equally working hard to control them. He has lesions in his brain that his neurologist believe are related to said seizures.

A lesion is an area of tissue that has been damaged through injury or disease. So a brain lesion is an area of injury or disease within the brain.

Yet, his Vet Team plus I and his neurologist also believe that stress is a big trigger for them too.

9) Those that know me, now that I rarely, say a dog is truly aggressive – in almost 30 years of doing this, yet, at this time this boy falls into that category.

For, as some may be aware, if a reactive dog crosses that threshold, they enter the aggression realm and this boy is there right now. This is caused by several factors – vulnerability, extreme fear, severe anxiety, lack of proper socialisation and training just to name a few.

He just sees ‘red’ when it comes to other dogs. He is beyond trying to communicate to humans as reactive dogs do that he is not trying to give us a hard time but in fact is having a hard time.

He is also resource guards at an intense level.

10) Leash manners are coming – he is in a martingale for safety and we have many wonderful moments of clarity in our short walks that he can focus, think and respond to what is being asked of him.

11) BHRR is the right organization for him, YET our home is not the right one for him as we are a multi dog home.

Therefore, over these past couple of weeks, thanks to an amazing approved experienced Volunteer of ours, we have been transitioning him from my home to theirs – inches….just inches. We work side by side with him to set him up for success.

They do not have other dogs in their home. It deeply assists him in so many ways…..BHRR’s Kenai bonded fierce and fast to me and we also need to make sure that his emotional needs and that building up of trust he has gifted me with is not broken….

Inches BHRR’s Kenai….it is all about inches that are miles for you.

We are not in a rush….one inch at a time!

12) He remains not housebroken and we continue to work with him on that. What used to be a 100% lack of housetraining is now about 75%…Those Inches!

This picture was taken today in our side yard as the light was fading fast…Sean is holding him as all he wanted to do is chase the softly falling snowflakes and Mason was trying to get a picture of his face for all of you to see!

This is who you are helping with your lifesaving donations….his bills are mounting fast – we are almost $4,000 between exams, diagnostics plus meds.

AND being only 6 months of age, he is worth every penny!

When he wags his tail and when he looks at me with total clarity, I see the dog he has the amazing potential to be…..

He will remain in our BHRR Haven Program for life and shall not be made available for adoption.

As I am heading out of the country tomorrow, follow-ups on auction items, collection of payments etc. will not be as quick as they were tonight!

From our home to all of our friends, family and supporters, warmest good night wishes are being sent!

BHRR’s Percival UPDATE!

The 3 year old fox red Labrador had his recheck tonight and it was a great one!

As I have said many times over reputable/quality rescue is not about winning any popularity contests and in bringing in this boy to our rescue, that has been proven twice over.

We will continue to do right by this boy who did not receive what he should have in his past and his bills are now just under $2,500 for when his bloodwork came back, he was positive for Lymes. This was something known per his previous Vet Records last spring yet, he was not treated.

For those that are not aware, Lyme disease can damage the heart, nervous system, and kidneys and it can kill.

So, he began an over $200 treatment of Doxycycline for the Lyme and in the spring he will require a bloodtest just like BHRR’s Mollie(Quant 6).

His weight tonight was 38.60 kgs(84.92 pounds) and with the implementation of a proper exercise and food regime, he has lost 2.8 kgs(6.16 pounds)! WTG! Team BHRR’s Percival! He is developing muscle mass plus tone and is looking so much better! He has the beginning of an actual waistline! WAHOO!

His ear infections are clearing up – only mildly red right now, his skin is greatly improving – he actually has toes now and not fat sausages! His feet, toes and pads are less irritated, less red and he is not as itchy. He is not shaking, crying, restless nor rubbing the way he once was.

The fistula’s on his butt are almost resolved too!

His coat is looking mighty fine and I am so proud of him and proud of his fosters!!!

His Vet was so impressed with the incredible improvement to his medical health.

He does not require any further antibiotics for his ears nor his skin at this time and he will continue on the Apoquel for his allergies and the Doxy for his Lyme disease and be bathed with his special shampoo once a month PLUS remain on his fish based food – which costs almost $300/month.

Now that his legs, feet and toes plus pads feel better, he is no longer doing that painful small limp that he once was doing.

His heart and lungs sound great also!

As we now have his medical conditions under control, he can be neutered in a few weeks time and we will be focusing more on his social anxiety – having not been properly stimulated with exercise – he is both excited and anxious about some public venues. So much stimulation and so, taking it as easy as things can be with the introduction of this big beautiful amazing world we live in. Being a lab, he takes most things in stride already and the rest will come as he continues to learn that he is ok, that he can stand on his four feet himself and be comfortable with his own company and in his own skin.

His foster mom said he was anxious in the car whining – he barely whined with myself, yet he did whine, something he did not do when I first picked him up. So, we will work on his comfort level of car rides being associated with a lot of really awesome things! I had no issues getting him in nor out of the car. He hopped right in. I also do not talk to him. I passively ignore.

He was anxious at the Vet tonight somewhat yet, that is understandable.

He loves meeting everyone and everything! Such a nice boy!

He is eating supper much better than his breakfast and he is on a strict regiment of not getting anything more than his kibble and some canned food to use as treats and for his meds.

He is terrified of stairs, so that is a work in progress and now that he is settling in, while his leash manners are ok with me, he was lugging his foster Mama all around.

He has figured out playing with toys and with other dogs and has been playing up a storm with his foster brothers!

He has been great with cats to date too.

For those asking, he is not available for adoption and he will not be until at least mid January. At that time, we will re-assess and any screening adoptive process will be extremely thorough via our BHRR procedures. He will only be placed in that right matched forever loving home meant for him.

Said right matched forever loving home will be required to stay on top of his food and seasonal allergies. This poor dog has suffered and greatly. How terrible it had to have been living in such pain and discomfort.

The better he has felt, the happier he has become and what a ham!

Gentle Reminder that our Annual ‘JUST IN TIME FOR XMAS’ Online Auction ends tomorrow night at 9 PM and all monies raised shall go towards BHRR’s Percival’s continued Vet Care.

Here is the link to view the 58 items currently up for grabs and I will be adding the last items, ~15 tonight.
