BHRR's Emma's prognosis is not good. 🙁

There is nothing more medically that can be done for her. 🙁

Just in the last two days; her bowels movements have had no control at all and she has had 7 accidents. She is also developing a resistance to the bladder medications and sometimes, I cannot express anything; even though; I know she should have to go. 🙁

We shall give her quality of life for as long as possible.

Keep her in your thoughts and prayers plus blessings. 🙁

Here are two photos that I took of BHRR's Petal today! SHE is beginning to really enjoy the camera! She will sit and just look right at it!!! OR maybe, it is me that she is looking at and wondering why I am behind this big lens! LOL That is more likely the real truth! 😉

She is a model for sure!

Doesn't she look so much more relaxed and less tense? AND she is so very nicely groomed now! THE hair that I took out of her! She is still very thin, yet; getting there.

After she and BHRR's Rose are spayed, on July 10th(want to give them more time for the weight to come on); then they shall begin to be separated from being in the same crate. They both need to become strong where they are weak and there relationship is not always the healthiest. BHRR's Rose is a dom girl – sweet yet dom and we need BHRR's Petal to become more and more of her own girl and BHRR's Rose to relax and not to feel like she has to step up and care for BHRR's Petal all the time.

Already they are on their own, spending some time away from each other when they do venture outside etc. AND that is very healthy!

BHRR's Petal – June 29th, 2012

BHRR's Rambo is now AVAILABLE FOR ADOPTION! 🙂 YAY! He has healed nicely from his hot spots and is doing great!!!! 🙂

He is no longer that emotionally and mentally very confused and messed up boy! He is a HAM! AND he has the photo to prove that he can be silly and full of fun and playful!

This Dobie would make an excellent obedidence partner! When he gets overly excited, I put him into a sit, get him to focus at looking at me; and he settles right down.

He is a high maintenance dog; one meant for an active(YET not too active home for that would just overload him) home; no young children(less than 11),  a home that is going to keep him mentally plus physically stimulated. He would be great in a home that works from home, works pt, or even full time. He is that versatile! 🙂

He will give you his heart in loyalty and commitment once you earn his trust. HE is not to be manhandled and we do not advocate anything other than positive reinforcement. This boy had no idea how to be a dog when he first arrived. He was just so messed up….. 🙁

He is calmer, more relaxed, less tense as he understands what is expected of him with clear and open positive communicative commands associated with his name.

He is so eager to please and wants to love…..

AND any home must understand that he still LOVES to talk with his empty food bowl! 😉

BHRR's Rambo – June 29th, 2012

It finally happened….and was the sweetest gift EVER! ARC Baby, Rose gave me her first kiss…..and in fact, it was MORE than one kiss! Sigh…….such a present to have bestowed upon myself!

Here is a VIDEO of my 'ARC Babies' – Rose & Petal! They were my co-pilots today on my way to work

BHRR's Rose was a very thin 18.1 KGs(39.82 pounds); was given a convenia injection for her UTI and we postponed her DAPP Booster until she is over the UTI. We microchipped her, did presurgical bw and also a HWT. She is scheduled to be spayed on July 10th.

BHRR's Petal was a very thin 16.9 KGs(37.18 pounds); had her eye looked over and it appears to be doing really well; had her DAPP Booster and we microchipped her, did presurgical bw and also a HWT. She is scheduled to be spayed on July 10th.

The Vet believes that BHRR's Rose is no more than 2. He believes that BHRR's Petal is around the same age.

Both did really well in the car. They were very quiet at the Hospital and sadly, BHRR's Rose did have a pee out of nervousness when she was being chipped. Both did really well with the Vet and BHRR's Rose even took treats from the Vet! Liver treats…have to remember that one….BHRR's Petal hid under the front desk at the Hospital until she felt comfortable and she poked her head out when she was ready and did fantastic after that.

Many commented on how bonded they both are to me and well, the feelings are very mutual! 😉

They are both quite nervous of Mason and Sean; yet; are more 'ok' with Kinsley and they just keep getting better and better…….very small baby steps with them….very small…….so much can startle and shake them up but they trust me more and more….

The amount of hair I have pulled out of both of them is CRAZY! They need regular grooming and are not hard to maintain and how tragic that their grooming needs were not maintained. 🙁

At our recent BHRR 'EXPERIENCE' Mini Open House; neither dog wanted to come out in the beginning. Then BHRR's Rose poked her head out a few times and then back into her crate and then she poked her head out again and eventually came all the way out plus even went outside for a pee. Towards, the end of the BHRR 'EXPERIENCE' Mini Open House; BHRR's Rose was walking much more comfortably around the place and we had 6 guests stay for dinner and she was even better by then. BHRR's Petal, much more shy and scared; actually; also came out towards the end of our event and by the time dinner rolled around with our 6 guests, she; was walking around a bit on her own, looking more relaxed and in her element.

Per the information package that we sent out before the event and as we kept telling several people at the event; please passively ignore them and do not force yourself on them. They need time and space and patience and understanding.

BHRR's Emma is scheduled for her recheck on Wednesday. I am terrified. 🙁 The medications are not working and I continue to express her up to 4 times a day and her urine still is infected smelling plus she is having accidents. 🙁

We are holding on to hope and trying to stay as positive as we can for her.

Those that attended our BHRR 'EXPERIENCE' Mini Open House this past weekend; LOVED her! She is a vocal GD when it comes to the sounds she makes to let others know that she is there to be paid attention too. LOL

She is not a wall flower and when she wants attention, she just goes for it! 🙂 So many remarked on how beautiful she is and her gorgeous eyes….sigh…those eyes! 😉

Many also remarked on her very weak hind end, 'odd' gait and several wanted to observe while I expressed her throughout the day. We received many compliments on our commitment to her; but; this is just want BHRR is here to do! AND a few who have met her in the past – shortly after her arrival to BHRR – commented on how much younger and less tense plus happy she was!!!! She even showed off a few times to do her 'trot'…….

AND quite a few made remarks on how much she is bonded to me and how she almost tries to spin in a circle when she sees me. My heart is taken….that is for sure!

Please everyone…..keep her in your thoughts…..please….all the positive energy and vibes you can send; would be so appreciated!

On February 17th, 2012; I posted something very similar on BHRR's Shiva's blog….I am now going to post the same on BHRR's Dana's. BHRR's Shiva was adopted on June 21st, BECAUSE BHRR did NOT give up on her and a home out there finally wanted her for HER and saw HER for who she really was! YAY!

May your right matched forever loving home find you and SEE you & not the 'black' dog; not the big dog, not the dog with the greying mask(masking gene), overlook your sense of mischief and humour and not ANY of the other idjit reasons people have to date passed you over and not applied to adopt you! WELL, we love you and we love your beautiful brown eyes and do not think you odd and 'creepy' having had a toe amputation, we love your gorgeous black fur, soft ears and we love how glossy and healthy your coat is and do not see anything 'common' about you! YOU are unique, special and we LOVE you!

BHRR's Dana; this STORY/VIDEO is also for you! Just as people did not give up on Rufo in this story (the dog nobody wanted – spent 6 years in a shelter with only 2 hours a day of outside time); we shall never turn our backs on you! 335 dogs have been adopted via BHRR and your turn shall come JUST as it has finally happened with BHRR's Shiva after 3.5 years.

In the meantime; you live the best life with us with us, people that adore you; kids and other dogs to romp with, 148 acres to enjoy 24/7, you are safe, not kennelled or caged, have play dates, treats and your training just keeps going to higher levels and we love you so much!

You see BHRR's Dana; people gave us so much 'abuse' over BHRR's Shiva and wanted her to be pts as she was not being adopted or felt that BHRR was and let me word this right 'nazi like' in our adoption processes and were turning perfectly 'good' homes down for her BUT what NONE of them have ever understood is that NO one wanted her for her and some people pitied or felt sorry for her(THOSE people never came to BHRR to see how she lives! 😉 ) and that is not the right reason to adopt and for others' we are not looking just for 'good' homes; we are looking for those right matched forever loving good homes and I can count on ONE hand over the years; the applications that came in for BHRR's Shiva. ONE hand.

Yet, it only takes one application, that right mached application to come in and BHRR's Dana; your forever loving home shall also come along…we have more than proven our commitment to our dogs; more than proven that we are patient and more than proven that we shall only take those right matched forever loving homes to continue that second to none adoption chain of success adoption numbers because we care about our animals and know them and know the homes that they should be going too.

Our priority shall always remain and be for the animals under our care and we shall gladly continue to take those few emails, calls, pm's a year of 'abuse' from those who do not understand, do not want to understand, do not care to understand and at the end of the day; it does not matter that they understand…for we just cannot educate everyone out there. My husband calls them 'armchair quarterbacks.' That is as great as term as any! 😉

You just keep on stealing those toilet paper rolls, the paper towel rolls, using the ice cube maker machine and keeping all on their toes here at BHRR; FOR you make me laugh daily AND you make me a better person, trainer, behavoural expert, owner and make me think and think and think more AND you so ROCK BHRR's Dana! 😀

BHRR's Rose & BHRR's Petal have been rescheduled to see the Vet on June 26th.

Cannot wait! Not even down the block and I had to pull over to make this post!! BHRR's Shiva has just been ADOPTED!! Omg!! It was all I could do to not bawl!!
When this home first contacted me, BHRR's Shiva was my top of three possible fits and the home would have done great with either Dane(they are just that fantastic); yet; they chose BHRR's Shiva too!!
Omg!!! I think I am going to cry….. :)-
The whispers in her ear of all that I hope and want for her would fill
up ten pages AND I just know they shall come true!!
Shiva The Diva; you are now home and my heart is bursting with sheer joy and while others gave up on you; BHRR and all your fans did not! This home loves your glossy shiny black coat and your 100% byber GD stature; was incredibly impressed by your manners(bilingual too!); and was completely taken in by your charm!! Yes!!! Yes!!

Below are some photos taken by her temp foster mom back in April and her 'new' family photo! 🙂

April 2012

April 2012 & NEW ADOPTIVE Home June 21st, 2012

AND this is the last email we have from her temp foster home before she came back to BHRR re: their latest adventures – April 2012! 😀

Hi Gwen,

This update on the lovely Shiva is waaaay overdue.

As usual, things are going great if not excellent.  Her return to our household (aka Shiva's Palace) has gone without issue.  She quickly fell into our daily routine. This visit is different compared to the others.  The season/weather is a big factor.  We are spending alot of time outdoors doing yardwork, going for walks and playing in the neighborhood park.  She loves being outdoors with us.  When doing yardwork in the front yard, she is attached to a 20ft lead (no fence) and just sits (or mostly lies) there on the front lawn taking it all in.

She is doing so much better when meeting strangers, in and outside our home. I've been observing her behavior (nervous around new people) and this is slowly changing in a very positive way.  I greet everyone with a cheerful calm voice while reassuring her.  I've found that if we let Shiva go to the person (to check them out) instead of the person going to her (I believe this overwhelms her and she will not accept this person as easily), she becomes putty in their hands in no time at all.  She is becoming much more trusting of strangers.  She has fallen in love with our cleaning lady, Mimi.  The funny part is that Mimi is under 5ft tall and weighs less than Shiva.  So when Shiva leans into Mimi (her way of letting you know that she wants some "butt rub lovin'"), she almost tips her over!!!

We have discovered a neighborhood park where she is able to go off leash and romp around with the other dogs.  She is becoming quite popular with the dogs and owners.  I've received many comments on how she is "mature" and well behaved. Her new best buddies are Nala, 7yrs old Dane and Harley, 8mth old Rottie mix.

Something new I've discovered about Shiva the Diva is that she is absolutely wonderful with small dogs.  We had a playdate at our home last weekend with a coworker Liz, her son Peter and their two dogs Peanut, 5 yr old Bichon and Mason, 9 mth old ShiPoo.  When they arrived for the visit, Shiva did the usual "loud announcement" that we had company.  As soon as I opened the door and she saw them, her demeanor did a complete 180 degrees.  She instantly stopped barking and became so calm, gentle and totally accepting of them all.  Keep in mind that the little four-legged squirts who weighed in at +/-10lbs combined wanted absolutely nothing to do with this GIGANTIC black diva, LOL.  Shiva respected this and provided space.  She did not push to be friends and let them come to her on their terms.  Her patience, gentleness, caring and understanding were so apparent.  It was absolutely amazing for me!!!! We spent a whole 2+ hours together and by the end of our visit, the wee little ones were walking around Shiva with no issues whatsoever!  All was good!  She makes me so proud this one!

The beautiful black beauty has, again, totally stolen our hearts.  She is such a great dog.  It is an absolute joy to have her with us, even if it's only for a few weeks.

Thanks Gwen and I'll be giving her an extra KISS and HUG from you all at BHRR!!!!

We are seeing some more slight improvement – especially behavourally – with BHRR's Hailey! I gave her her third Cartrophen injection and she is still toe touching yet; is more like herself.

GO BHRR's HAILEY GO!

Here is a VIDEO of BHRR's Veteran on his way with me to his hv for his possible GD adoption yesterday!

On that note, BHRR's Veteran has been adopted!

I think Atlas would be very happy for his buddy. Another emotional day. Sean said his good-byes this AM before I left and I found it equally hard to say mine.
This boy has put on close to 45 pounds of muscle mass and weight; learned to trust and be playful plus happy and healthy since he was first rescued by ARC and coming to BHRR for this rehab journey.
As he was giving me kisses; I told him how darn proud I was of him; that he has changed and bettered so many lives by all of us having met him and knew him; said he was a gift and one that is to be cherished and I thanked him for being just him; helping to heal Atlas; for taking the other ARC babies under his care; for being one of the best obedience pupils ever and yup….could feel a tear or two brewing….I found it hard to tell him all I felt plus thought yet; I knew he knows for I tell him these things every day!
He was a wee bit worried at the end when it was getting close for me to leave and as we do with all our adoptions, had the home distract him and slipped quietly away…..
I know we shall receive updates and in time; I am sure that his new home will reveal themselves.
ARC thank you again for entrusting such a treasure to BHRR!

BHRR's Goliath went to his new forever adoptive home on Friday June 15th, 2012! ADOPTED!!!

From a post I made on our BHRR FB Page:

AND he is off! Just dropped off BHRR's Goliath to his new forever loving adoptive home. Will post a photo later and a short video! Another very special dog that will be deeply missed.
Just before I left; I bent down; whispered how amazing he was; how deserving he was; how so many have been cheering or this very moment to happen or him; asked him to never change – to keep everyone around him entertained and on their toes while at the same time show the world how much he has learned in gentlemanly manners!! Just as I finished telling how much he is loved; I felt a tear well up and he turned his head and kissed it away…..
What an emotional week it has been….
Tomorrow, on to another possible GD adoption and next Thursday; another. How blessed are these sweet animals of BHRR!

BHRR's Freedom & BHRR's Peanut are coming out with me on the 30th of June for another social play date.

Unfortunately, the second outing that I was hoping to have for BHRR's Freedom awhile ago; was cancelled due to the Volunteer having an injured animal at home.

Should this Visit go well, I shall be moving towards them having playdates, day trips etc. on their own for an hour or so with approved Volunteers. BOTH of them are coming along beautifully and I still have to update their blogs from their first social network dates.

BHRR's Emma is allowing me to express her bladder with such calm and acceptance. I am so PROUD of her!

I was able to express it twice on Wednesday with results and three times on Thursday.

When she becomes uncomfortable, she wants to walk away and will make a small sound and I give her a wee break and try again as I want to ensure that she is as comfortable as possible.

Sean does not even have to hold her collar while I express it. She is such a nice girl. AND she so much happier now. She will even trot – a wobbly bobbly one but trot and looks so much younger than she did upon first arrival. Her coat is becoming so soft and healthy.

Her eyes look happier and more relaxed.

She does have some anxiety in the car and will whimper at times and with all these trips to and from the Vet Hospital, I do not blame her. Yet, she has had this anxiety since she first arrived. Was she dumped by someone in her past???? We do know that she was out there fending for herself for X knows how long. I am beginning to take her on short trips – kids on the bus, down the road etc., so that she goes out and comes back. She was offered a timbit at one Timmie's yet; she was not relaxed. We shall keep working on that when she goes out; she knows she is coming home and she will get better. Poor thing. 🙁

She is still have bowel movement accidents. We just clean it up and do not scold or reprimand. She is completely clueless that it is happening or has happened.

She is a stronger personality girl and has been jockeying for 'leader female' in my home and now that BHRR's Journey has been adopted(BHRR's Journey was beginning to move towards wanting to take over that role); she has targetted BHRR's Dana. AND BHRR's Dana just backs off…..very interesting. BHRR's Shiva and BHRR's Hailey; who were sharing the role with BHRR's Dana as the lead; have just accepted BHRR's Gemma as the new role leader. This is going to be very fascinating to see play out. We do not allow BHRR's Gemma to be a gooberhead though. This just feeds her ego and yes, she has a wee bit of a mischievous imp side coming out that seems to enjoy bending the dogs to her will.

YET, on the other hand, she is so patient and tolerant of Drift. She will let him crawl all over her and use his sharp baby teethies on her. She is a good dog and also continues to so everyone how fast and strong she is bonded to me. Therefore, I have Sean feeding her at least one of her meals and she is getting better with her slight nervousness of him.

When she was at KAH earlier this week, the Vet commented that she was great with everyone there, no nervousness this time around etc. Yet, when I arrived, you could see her beginning to try and resource over me and that was quickly shut down. YOU must share Gwennie! 😉

This is a girl that if you give an inch, she is going to take a mile and a half. No doubt. Firm, fair, loving and patient with lots of consisteny and obedience.

BHRR's Jetta went to the Vet on Wednesday June 13th and her new weight was 99.88 pounds(45.4 KGs). She has put on almost 15 pounds since her arrival. So, people can well imagine JUST how thin she was upon arrival. 🙁

The Vet LOVED how responsive she was to her obedience commands! BHRR's Jetta has learned sit, down, stay, gentle and so much more since her arrival. She is so attentive to people and if you have treats, even more so…. 😉 Her leash manners are coming along very well.

She is beginning to really blow off all that old brown and dull coat now that she is on great nutrition at BHRR. You can see just how shiny and healthy it is becoming. PUS soft! Her ears are heaven. 🙂 Still some dander coming off and I am still washing her here and there(not too much) with an oatmeal based shampoo.

She received her DAPP booster and Rabies plus we did a HWT.

The Vet says that all those wee bumpies on the top of her head is puppy acne. WHO knew!

We did do a skin scraping to be sure that she was not having any demodectic mange issues and no mites present that would indicate such.

Her hair is even beginning to grow back on her belly and her tail injury is also healing well.

Once she puts on another 15-20 pounds, she shall be ready for adoption.

She is a very nice dog! VERY nice! She is my new 'social spazz' just as BHRR's Journey became. The Vet loved that term! LOL

BHRR's Jetta's ANGELS:      $145 donated to date & Bills $600+

Here is a TRIBUTE that ARC put together for BHRR's Atlas & also some really touching words shared my way by wonderful ARC Angel Karla.

I also want to thank Canine Water Wellness for all the amazing hydrotherapy sessions! BHRR's Atlas safe word was 'trust' and he came to trust and really enjoy his sessions there! 🙂

Gwen,

I'm so sorry for your loss and the loss the whole world experienced at the death of the magnificent Atlas. Thank you for sending along all those pictures. You know I'm not exaggerating when I say he looks 10 years younger/better in these pictures than the pictures taken the day we rescued him. He only had about 6 months with you, but surely they were the best 6 months of his life. He knew love, he knew joy, he knew what it was like, finally, to just be able to be a dog. I take great comfort in knowing he left this world \not in pain, alone on the cold streets but in peace, surrounded by people who loved and respected him.

Thank you for everything of yourself and of Birch Haven's resources that you generously gave him. He couldn't have had a better time or more love and comfort than he had with you. ARC is forever grateful for everything you and Birch Haven do, but especially for stepping up for those most in need like our dear Atlas who we will remember forever.

Lots of love,

Karla

I am going to stay very cautiously optimistic and say that I do believe that we see a slight improvement for BHRR's Hailey! She is still toe touching; yet seems more relaxed, less tense, happier, more like her outgoing self and is eating a bit better.

Her third injection is this Friday and keeping everything crossed for her to have the best results possible for as long as possible; so that we do not have to amputate her leg anytime soon.

She shall have two more injections, one week apart; then we shall re-evaluate/re-examine her and if all is going well; move to one injection bi-weekly and re-assess again then.

KEEP her in your thoughts!

My sad and tragic news and it has taken me awhile to be able to write this due to how devastated our home has been is that Atlas was diagnosed with cancer – bladder and after a valiant 4 week battle with Cancer; he humanely was released and we let him cross over. My heart shall never be the same. I adored him…he was an amazing dog. He deserved so much. The tears I have cried, the anguish we have been in over his loss is just stomach clenching.

In posting this collage; I want to share WHO he really was and for all to remember him at his prime when he was rehabbed at BHRR; and not how he was last November when he was first rescued. For people to remember the soft, healthy and shiny coat when all his hair came back in, the lesions and physical plus emotional wounds healed; the playing he began to do with both humans and dogs; the head and tail up; becoming so wonderfully comfortable and confident with both human plus canine friends and so much more ncluding having put on well over 40 pounds of muscle mass and weight while at BHRR. The loving, affectionate and ever learning to trust people/dogs and explore the world sweet precious boy!

At his top weight; he was close to 135 pounds and in just one month of the Vets/BHRR trying to figure out what was medically wrong; he had dropped to just over 103, was lethargic, stopped showing interest in food; stopped wanting to play, urinated often, had blood in his urine and peed in small amounts and just wanted to sleep more and more through time and this was not the boy that had become so healthy and happy under our care. It took some time to finally diagnose him and he had been battling UTI’s since Mid-April and so the focus began to be centred on his bladder.

He was the best dog…..I wish that BHRR could have saved him from Cancer. 🙁 I have battled many feelings of frustration plus anger in addition to being so grief stricken on his behalf.

This boys heart and soul was so special, so very very very special.

He should have had years…..years…..

UPDATE from BHRR's Riley's Temp Foster home sent today:

Riley has been eating great !  He is eating three times a day, he eats more in the evening feeding then the others but at least he always seems to be interested in the food.
On the nights he has been really active outside, he gobbles up his evening feeding and keeps licking the bowl like he can't get enough LOL

Oh I also must say that I am loving all the extra cuddles, he is quite the affectionate boy.  Everyone that meets him has commented on how gentle is his, not to mention handsome!

That is great!  The three meal time are working out well with him, I will add some more food his way 🙂

Him and Neffie have become quite the play buddies.  I got a huge laugh on Sunday as Riley managed to knock Neffie into the side of our mini pool (soft blow up one).  This ended up soaking Neffie from head to tail LOL  The look on her face was priceless.

I've also been trying to get a decent picture of him, but he is too quick most of the time.

On Friday June 1st, BHRR's Emma was sedated to manually express her bladder and almost 7 quarts of urine was expressed. She still had not urinated since her spay and before her spay, her urination was small walking pees, when she did urinate – which was not often – never a complete void. 🙁 The colour and smell was a bit better from when this was done during her spay. When she was spayed, the IV fluids were used to flush out her bladder and it was expressed several times then until her urine ran clear.

The one Vet advised not to insert a catheter for her uretha was very irritated and also the constant copious amounts of urine that would continue to flow from leaving a catheter in. I was not bothered by the constant urine flow; yet; if her uretha was very irritated, I did not want there to be further cause of distress to her. The Vet said that they could feel constant very small contractions when manually expressing her.

She really needed the Tramadol that night.

She remained on the Zenequin and the course of Cephalexin was ending. The Zenequin was indicated to be able to cover all the eastie beasties she was found to have had via her c&s testing.

I went by the Pharmacy to pick up the Prazosin and was informed at that time that they only had 1 mg in stock and only had a very few(BHRR's Emma would need 15 of these tablets daily). The 5 mg was s/o and I was told that it would not be arrive until the Tuesday or Wednesday of the following week. I am not sure why this was not imparted my way when I first dropped off the prescription. So, now we were heading in to a weekend and she would not have the Duvoid/Bethanecol or the Prazosin.

Therefore, I scheduled her for another exam plus manual bladder expression for June 5th under sedation as she was still recovering from her spay. She was really needing that Tramadol in addition to the Deramaxx.

On Saturday June 2nd, she had her first very small pee – walking and then a small squat and I was hoping that we may be getting somewhere and hoped that Prazosin would arrive soon.

On Sunday June 3rd, she was a bit excited when she saw me and a sudden flow of not a subtantial amount of urine pooled. She was completely unaware of what had happened.

During this weekend; she had yet two more bowel movements in her crate; and the thought process continues to wonder; about her being completely unaware when she poops too. The poor girl. 🙁

On Tuesday June 5th, BHRR's Emma went in for another exam plus manual bladder expression under sedation and about 1 litre of very concentrated urine was released. Her Prazosin had not yet arrived.

On Friday June 8th, I contacted the Pharmacy as I had not yet heard word. BHRR's Emma began the Prazosin this day and we held off on the Duvoid/Bethanecol per the Vet still at this time.

On Tuesday June 12th, BHRR's Emma went in for another exam and bladder expression. This time they were not done under sedation and she had five expressions between 7:30 AM and 7:30 PM. The first three were very easily done – lots of urine, slight smell and colour concentrated. The fourth one resulted in no urine; yet; she was also not on the Prazosin TID that day and when I arrived to pick her up; I only managed to get a small amount expressed during the fifth attempt and the colour was better; yet; there was still a slight smell.

She went home with more Zenequin for with the urine staying in her bladder; it is a brewing pot for infection. She was given another 14 days worth.

When I am at KAH tonight; I shall pick up more of the Duvoid/Bethanecol for we are now going to give both to see if this will make a difference.

The fact that she has been on the Prazosin(almost $100/month in cost) since last Friday with little improvement is very worrisome. 🙁

My promise to BHRR's Emma is that we are going to give her all that we can in commitment and assistance and want at least one month of consistency for her in meds and manually expressing her bladder every 8 hours at home now for her; since she has healed from her spay; to see if we can get her bladder and bowels to work. As her condition is believed to be caused from trauma(history of abuse); I am deeply concerned for her quality of life. 🙁

If all of this works for BHRR's Emma; we shall keep her under our BHRR HAVEN program. If it does not work, her Vet team and myself will have to have a serious discussion regarding her quality of life.

Please keep everything crossed for BHRR's Emma.

On Thursday May 31st, I dailogued with three Vets at KAH regarding BHRR's Emma and my ever growing concern that something was just not right with her urination. It is also clear that yes, she has a weak hind end; yet her balance seems a bit wobbly plus as mentioned from from the beginning in her blogs; it is somewhat hard for her to raise her head completely upright.

So, more research, more discussions with other Vets ensued and BHRR's Emma was presribed Tramadol 15 x 100 mg to give in addition to the Dermaxx for any continued discomfort she was possibly experiencing with urination.

Additionally, discussion was had to give her Duvoid/Bethanecol 10 mg for the next few days – 1/2 tablet SID (a medication sent home for cats that have been unblocked) to see if that shall help her contract to allow her to urinate. Prazosin 5 mg TID was also researched to help the urehtal muscle relax. The advantage over using Prazosin over something like phenoxybenzamine was that the Prazosin seems to demonstrate a dose-by-dose effect(ie rather than having to wait several days or longer to reach a therapeutic level).

We also conversed about inserting a catheter as since her spay, she had not urinated at all. As she was also just spayed, manually expressing her bladder without sedation would be very painful for her.

So, I made an appointment to bring her in on June 1st, to manually express under sedation and to insert a catheter.

Later, on May 31st, a diagnosis was also made on her possible condition – 'REFLEX DYSSYNERGIA' – synonyms – Dyssynergia, Detrusor-urethal dyssynergia, Bladder dyssynergia, Detrussor-sphincter dyssynergia

Reflex dyssnergia is a syndrome(so there is an underlying cause for this condition) is a syndrome that describes asynchrony between active contraction of the detrusor muscle and incomplete/absent relaxation of the urethral sphincters. The affected pet has normal initiation of voiding and posturing but urination is interrupted by contraction of the external urethral sphincter resulting in a urine stream tha tmay stop or occur in spurts. The urine stream may be narrowed or the pet may dribble urine. In many cases, the patient will strain and tend to assume a posturing or squatting position with production to no urine ie. functional obstruction.

Pathophysioglogy

An underlying anatomic or neurologic lesion has never been described in dogs with this syndrome and spinal imaging studies have failed to identify a cause. Some cases have neurological examination changes but most do not. In some cases, onset of signs were associated with prior sexual excitement in intact male dogs. Since the onset is often sudden, trauma or a small vascular accident in the lower lumbar spinal cord have been suggested as possible etiologies.

Disease Description In This Species

In one study of 22 dogs, affected cases were middle-aged male dogs(mean age 4.9 years) of large and giant breeds. Nine dogs had had periodic clinical signs for longer than one year.

Breed Predilection

Large breed dogs

Sex Predilection

Male intact

Before I went home from work that day; one of her Vets advised to hold off on the Duvoid/Bethanecol 10 mg until the Prazosin was picked up and to give the Prazosin first and then the Bethanecol.

I took the script fo the Prazosin to the local pharmacy in Kemptville to be filled.

K. Rader, SWO, ON

Dear Gwen, Sean, Mason and Kinsley,

Not a day goes by that I do not open your website at work to catch up on all the lastest news. Today, just 45 minutes ago I was reading the blogs and discovered your heartbreaking news about Atlas. I can't even begin to tell you how sorry I am. I was finished work at 3:30 and cried all the way home. What you did for that dog was nothing short of amazing!! But like you I feel that he deserved so much better at the beginning of his life. No animal should have to live the way he did. Being so far away and only meeting him once you may think I am silly for feeling his loss this way, but by reading your blogs it almost feels like I know each of the dogs intimately. I can not even imagine the hole you must be feeling right now. Please know that you are all in my thoughts and prayers and I can hardly wait to see you next weekend and to be able to love on all the other dogs!!

Thinking of you,

This update is a long time coming. I thank everyone for their patience. I have been so focused on her care for the last two weeks; that updating her blog has not been able to be done. She has now been at the Vet Hospital four times in the last two weeks exactly.

On Tuesday May 29th, 2012; BHRR's Emma was spayed. She weighed 59.4 KGs(130.68 pounds). For all that may have been wondering, she was not pregnant. She had quite the layer of fat upon opening her up and unfortunately, she could not be spayed right then as her bladder was just huge and you could not reach her uterus. Her englarged bladder contnues to make her appear to be pregnant yet; every u/s, x-ray, exam plus relaxin testing has proven otherwise and in the then opening her up, no babies were found. We had to express her bladder and we expressed almost 14 quarts of bloody urine. I have continued to converse with the Vets since her arrival to BHRR re: her reluctance to pee and that when she does, it is a short walking pee and that she is almost not even aware that she has to urinate. I have expressed the concern that this is more than just a really bad UTI and also does not have any bearing on behavourally not desiring to pee due to discomfort.

I have also discussed my concerns regarding that the same thing seems to apply to her bowel movements. She does not squat to poop and does not seem to be aware when she is pooping.

I have taken photos of her spay and of the contents of her bladder and all are posted below and yes, the photos are graphic. Words can describe so much; yet; photos provide a great supporting documentation of what is happening. My photos have since been reviewed by no less than two other Vets and BHRR's Emma's Vet team, now includes four Vets trying to resolve her medical issues.

Her uterus once we we able to reach it; was very normal looking, stretched and full of a lining of fat; yet; very healthy. YAY! We also microchipped her.

She came home and was put on Deramaxx, continued her Cephalexin and her added antibiotic of Zeniquin.

I shall make a separate blog post re: her three repearted visits to the Vets and where everything stands at this time for BHRR's Emma. 🙁

I brought BHRR's Rambo to work with me on Monday June 11th instead of the Saturday. He was FABU supreme! NOT one peep as he hung out in the back and his new weight was 35.6 Kgs(77.88 pounds!). He was a wee bit off centre on the scale and I believe his weight is even closer to 80 pounds now. HE looks GREAT!

We had wanted to place him up for adoption once we obtained a new weight and if it was close to where I want to see him; yet; he is battling heat spots right now.

We did some skin scrapings and there were no mites present to indicate demodectic mange and we also discussed possible allergies. Yet, he seems to have developed some hot spots and wanted to lick at them and though, they had been healing – one on either side of his rump and one on his one inner thigh – the Vet believes he needed an extra boost to help him and so added some antibiotics – Cephalexin 500 mg – 1.5 tablets BID for 14 days.

Soooooooooooo, he shall not be placed up for adoption until he is at the end of his course of antibiotics AND if he has no other conditions that have develop that need treatment.

He also managed to crack two of his nails on his right front foot and the antibiotics will help with that too!

What a sweet young man! He was a bit worried with his exam; yet; I fed him treats; the Vet did their thing and I only had to restrain him for the skin scrapings and even then, he rested mostly on my knee and did not put up a fuss.

GOOD boy! 🙂

This is one great dog and he will just flouish in that right matched home meant JUST for him! 🙂 One that is not going to manhandle him; yet; treat him with respect and understanding patience in a firm, calm, guiding manner that will settle him and not create any anxiety or stress. He did not indicate one time that he may mouth and I am so PROUD of him! He wagged that wee stub of his tail NONSTOP today!

HE is soooooooooooo much more relaxed, less tense and just an affectionate boy! 🙂

BHRR's Rose & BHRR's Petal shall visit the Vet on June 20th, 2012.

BHRR's Jetta's Vet Appointment has been moved to June 13th, 2012.

Here is a VIDEO of BHRR's Rambo, BHRR's Rose, BHRR's Petal, BHRR's Gretta, BHRR's Jetta, BHRR's Goliath, BHRR's Freedom, JS, Drift, Guinnessand BHRR's Bloom from Sunday June 10th, 2012!

BHRR's Veteran is moving under a PENDING ADOPTED status! Will update his blog as we can.

BHRR's Rose & BHRR's Petal did not want to venture out at all today; so; this afternoon; with some encouragement from Sean and I; we managed to get BHRR's Rose out of the crate and BHRR's Petal was hot on her heels.

Took BHRR's Rose(carried her) outside and BHRR's Petal followed quickly and they hung around for some gentle reassurance, were shaking and then as Sean walked down the side of the house; they began to perk up, and literally then bounded and hopped their way through part of the fenced in yard! YAY!

I stayed with them and every few seconds, they would come 'check in' and I could give gentle touches to BHRR's Rose and then BHRR's Petal became curious and interested and she discovered that this gentle loving is not so bad! 🙂 I was able to take off with my hands what felt about 20 pounds of fur between the two of them and I shall continue to work on their coats as I can as I do not want to terrify them.

They would then romp a bit, come check in with me; explore a bit more; both had poops and a couple of pees and BHRR's Rose is definitely the more outgoing and dom one for she would pee over every spot that BHRR's Petal peed or pooped.

They run side by side in unison and had moments of happiness out there!

I was even able to give BHRR's Rose a very gentle soft kiss on her head! She is more independent, seeking some affection and then wanting to be more near and around me then touching me. BHRR's Petal, once she gets up the courage to come close to you; will 'seek' to have more; very shyly. Very small slow movements.

They are so skinny. 🙁 When I moved towards going deeper into the fenced in area; they were right there by my side or close on my heels. They are bonding fast and furious and for any adoptive homes that these two may go to; they will have to understand just how pack oriented and loyal these dogs are! It is humbling….just so humbling.

If I headed towards the house; they were quick to follow; no matter if they ventured a bit far away from me. They always kept their eyes on me and even now; as I am typing this; BHRR's Petal has those unbelievably stunning blue eyes watching me and BHRR's Rose has those incredibly gorgeous brown eyes looking at me.

They wanted to go back into their crate and we keep the door open; that was all cleaned up with fresh bedding, water and food; and both are now resting. They tend to eat when it is most quiet yet; do not appear to mind drinking when things are a bit busy here.

They have been integrated with most of the dogs here; yet; prefer to keep to themselves(Drift has other ideas! AS does Caffrey!) and stay quiet right now.

I have not heard a peep from them.

Am I falling in love? YUP! You betcha!

Tomorrow, promises to be another glorious day for them and I! 🙂

better be able to handle them and look at teeth and energy level etc.

Before I go to bed, I JUST have to post this exciting note about BHRR's Rose & BHRR's Petal!!!

While they would not take any treats from my hand, I put one "Journey Heart" biscuit in front of each of them and before I had even totally backed off; BHRR's Rose began to nibble hers and as I sat down on my computer chair again in the sunroom., BHRR's Petal began to nibble hers…………

That was a heart melting moment………..

These girls will be fine….in time….lots and lots of time and slow rehab and I am looking forward to every step of the way.

Baby steps…..and no scooping up and hugging and smothering them. They need normalcy and structure with routine, consistency plus rules that includes lots of love and patient kindness; yet; no feeling sorry for them, no trying to make up to them for their past; we want to get them to live in their present and look forward to their fantastic futures as I say. They would be ruined if we were to feel sorry and pity…I say that over and over again to those that want to somehow make it 'up to these dogs over their past'. As I say so often, they are a product of their past, live in their present and we look towards the future for them!

Very gentle touches are able to be given on the sides of their face and under their chins. No more than that at this time for they then shrink in fear and shyness. They need to be socialised and get used to people and touches and noises and outside and so much right now. Things many humans and dogs that have never gone through what they are going through; can take for granted.

I see their eyes, they want love, affection and to be accepted and I sooooooooooooo want to give them love and affection and I tell them all the time; that they are MORE than accepted.

I cannot wait for them to experience the almost 3 acre fenced in yard and the 148 acres of trails we have and just the sheer joy of what life can give them in pleasure and happiness. Toys, playing and so much joy to be had in their futures to experience!

Yet, first; baby steps…they need to feel like they can come out of the GIANT crate without fear and worry.

Drift just climbs on in there with them and snuggles….and at first, they just looked at him with confusion mixed with a little worry and now, they lay calmly with him. Their door remains open and they can come out when they want; yet; yesterday; they only wanted to come out twice. May, today; they want to come out more. Drift is really going to help them with confidence and deleloping self-assurance.

BHRR's Rose is eating more than BHRR's Petal. I have two bowls in there with them and will also take a closer look at their mouths and teeth when I can get in there plus when they are spayed.

I just do not want to be rushing them into being spayed etc. right now. They need more weight first and more time….just some time to settle in.

BUT, they ate a treatie each! YAY! YAY! YAY! 🙂

BHRR's Rose & BHRR's Petal are very slowly settling in.

At 2:02 yesterday AM, they ate a wee bit as I was working on the computer and later in the day; they both came out of the open GIANT crate they both have taken to laying in and had a wee bit of a walk about. Very shy, nervous and unsure. YET, very sweet dogs. They are also drinking some.

If BHRR's Petal could not find BHRR's Rose, she found me. They are just very scared and lots of slow movements, patience and no direct eye contact is being given. They are sooooooooo worried.

They are both quite thin, yet; BHRR's Petal is very painfully thin and I would give her a body score of perhaps 4 max. out of 10. Under all that hair and matts and tuffs of fur; she is all ribs and spine plus hips. BHRR's Rose is in better shape and a body condition of 5/10 was given to her by ARC before transport.

I want to shout out a HUGE thanks to Petalia Boutique & Marie-Sophie for the collars, leash and some food donations they plan on making for BHRR's Rose & BHRR's Petal! THANK YOU! THANK YOU! 🙂

Some have been asking what else they both need; and what we need are the following on their wishlist:

1) packing blankets – they are not housebroken as of yet

2) $$$ for their Vet Bills – the need HWT's, heartworm meds, de-worming medications, presurgical bw, to be spayed, microchipping, BHRR's Petal needs her nose and eye looked at plus her hair loss, both have now been given a dose of Revolution and are being de-wormed and major grooming is in the works for BHRR's Petal.

I think BHRR's Petal is more around 1.5 years max and BHRR's Rose around 2 years of age. As they settle in and de-stress, we shall better be able to handle them and look at teeth and energy level etc.

Here are some updates from BHRR's Riley's temp foster home!

UPDATE: June 5th, 11:07 AM

Hi Gwen,

Here is a mini update on BHRR's Riley:
-he has settled in well, is getting along with the 2 dogs
– he has met the cat, after being reminded to be gentle they have come to an understanding that the cat is boss LOL
– he loves to fetch and play ball, well just run in general, he is a very energetic boy and it loving the open backyard.
– he ate some dinner 🙂 only about 4 or 5 mouthfuls but still something.
– slept great and settled well in his crate
– he ignored breakfast, so hopefully after work I can get him interested 🙂

Oh and I have put a towel under the water dish 🙂 he reminds me of Lily Belle with his drinking LOL

UPDATE: June 5th, 2012, 12:58 PM

Hi,

OMG he is hilarious to watch in the backyard, zip and zooming.  Him and Neffie have gotten into a few good runs, YAY tired puppies 🙂
He is very respectful of the cats space, he is so curious and just loves to watch her.

Now to work on the eating!!

UPDATE: June 5th, 2012, 4:28 PM

Omg he is eating, he almost finished six cups 🙂  Will give him more later since he didn't eat breakfast.

But wahoo!!

BHRR's Rambo is headed to the Vet with me on Saturday for a new weight!

If that weight is anywhere near where I think it may be and where I want it to be; this boy shall be ready to be placed up for adoption!

HE has so thrived here at BHRR. He is no longer that super confused and emotionally messed up boy. He is a high energy, toy crazy, tug of rope, playful, affectionate and loving sweetie!

Do not get me wrong; he is a strong minded boy and any home of his is going to have to understand that if he is fearful; you have to take his collar in one way(gentle, passively reassuring) and if he is acting 'tudeman; take his collar in another way(positive, firm yet gentle and calmly confident). YOU have to know the difference with how he is communicating wit you! YOU cannot manhandle him and as we always say; BHRR does not support nor will have our dogs in homes that believe in any form of punitive or harshly corrective methods.

He walks nicely(still can pull and tug) on a flat buckle collar, is very responsive to commands, eager to please, very talkative(still loves to have conversations with his food bowl once it is empty), continues to share the water bowl very well, is fully integrated with all the dogs here; is not a dominant sort at all with the males here(once he learnt to be more like a dog; instead of trying to control all that was around him in the face of such instability in his past before coming to BHRR; he has settled right in). He is such a handsome smaller male and while he still plays quite rough; he has been learning self-control with the power of his play and mouth.

This boy in the right situation will be a fear biter out of sheer feelings of having to be defensive to try and protect himself. NO question. He is never to ever be set-up for failure that he would feel like he had to be that way. He has had so much stress in his short life; that it has taken much time to get him to destress, relax, enjoy life and not be so tense. He is a real class clown and character and one has to pay close attention to his nonverbal cues; to note when he may feel uncomfortable; which these days; is not with much and usually involves correcting him for counter surfing or garbage raiding or running off with the kids clothes or towels or yup; good ol' paper towel roles thanks to BHRR's Dana! SHE wuvs him! LOL You tell him in a clearly open communicative manner 'No Rambo' or 'No Garbage Rambo' etc. and if you have to go get him as he is a young dog, in training and growing/maturing and testing; then you take his collar positively, never threateningly and you do not drag or pull or force him. AND you have to be careful still about the eye contact during moments like this. YOU do not stare him down. That just intimidates him and worries him. You look 'at' him' and catch his eyes; yet you do not stare.

This boy is finally learning that we are the leaders, we are going to take care of him, we are going to protect him and his job is to be a happy, affectionate, playful, wanting to please(AND boy! DOES he ever want to please! An obedience dog he can be!) dog. Just that simple.

He has learnt that he shall be fed and on time and with enough food, that we are not going to allow him to push other dogs around(gooberhead when he first arrived!) and that we are also not going to allow other dogs to want to push him around…..right Brick? 😉

He has dominant tendencies and we have worked hard to ensure that his confidence is properly shaped and directed and is totally responding. I am so impressed with him!

He is a vocal one and one could mistakenly think he is being aggressive when he is just talking and expressing his feelings.

He will ONLY be adopted to a very experienced dog home; Doberman experience wonderful yet not necessary(his last home before coming to BHRR was suppose to be a Doberman experience home; yet; BHRR's Rambo was allowed to grab at his leash and collar when it was being put on and that was a set-up for failure – excitement issues).

He can go to a home with older children, cats are unknown, another right matched personality fit dog or dogs are great(he gets along with both males and females), a home that works full time or parttime or from home or semi retired or retires are all possible. A home that is active yet; not so packed full of activities that he becomes over stimulated and loses focus and the self-control slips.

He is so versatile in so many ways in respect to the type of home for him. On the other hand; only the right matched personality fit home shall do!

BHRR's Riley was dropped off to his temp foster home yesterday.

He is going to have two lovely other doggies to play with and we want him to keep EATING! EATING! AND EATING! 😀 His coat is so shiny and glossy; yet; as a growing boy; and one that came to BHRR very painfully thin and emaciated; he still needs to put on more weight.

I have finally find the combination in how to feed him, when to feed him and what to feed him that seems to be working since Easter.

He will ONLY eat the RC Giant Junior or RC Giant Puppy food. He will ONLY eat if you first place food in Drift's crate and also feed BHRR's JS first including BHRR's Shiva(they all eat near him) AND he will ONLY eat if you give him a partial bowl first and then as everyone else eats such as BHRR's Potter, BHRR's Hailey and BHRR's Maggie May; you can give him more.

He is eating fairly reliably about 8 cups a day. I want and need him to eat 12-15 cups right now. Better than he was; WAY better; yet; still a ways to go. I cannot believe some days that he has put on over 30 pounds for he still has another 20-25 pounds to go. He just keeps getting taller and finally growing into that beautiful noggin' of his! LOL

He will remain with his temp foster home until at least the June BHRR 'EXPERIENCE' Mini Open House and as we have three applications that we are currently reviewing for adoptions; he may come back to BHRR then or a bit later. With the intake of BHRR's Rose & BHRR's Petal plus what we are assisting BHRR's Hailey and BHRR's Emma through right now; this is the perfect thing for him to be doing. HE has way too much fun and there are way too many distractions and he is WAY not interested enough in eating. AND the amount that he plays and burns off is incredible. He is a high maintenance, energy, life loving, uber affectionate gooberhead boy! 🙂

I am going to miss him….I miss them all. 🙂

Since August 2011; ARC has been working on a hoarding situation in Montreal, Quebec. This all came together today; June 4th, 2012; when Animal Rescue Corps secured the surrender of 20 dogs being housed in a 1 bedroom apartment outside of Montreal, Quebec. The dogs are being transported to placement partners in the US and Canada where they will be placed in loving homes.

BHRR was contacted to assist early last week in preparation as a Rescue Partner of ARC and though, I was unable to be there hands on myself; THANK you Karen for being there as the approved BHRR representation to help bring these two girls safely back to BHRR!

We remain just honoured and privileged to have once more being asked to assist ARC(Animal Rescue Corps). For those that may not be aware; this is the amazing organization that did the historical precedent setting Operation Anishnabe Dogs: A Lasting Solution! event last November 2011; where BHRR's Atlas & BHRR's Veteran came to BHRR per their request. 275 dogs were assisted with their incredible efforts!

Please do consider supporting their life saving/changing missions of compassion!

All dogs are good with other dogs and children. All of the dogs seizured are between the ages of 3-5, both genders, none altered but shots are UTD. Some have minor medical issues (ear problems, needs dental) but nothing major. One or two are very shy, some are bonded pairs.

As a Giant Breed Rescue; we originally were going to take in the largest dog; a male; yet as it was hard to find places to put the bonded pairs and ARC did not wish to place them in shelters/pounds; BHRR was more than happy to take them instead when another group offered to take in the male. These two girls; remind me of BHRR's Peanut and BHRR's Gretta and just as with any other 'honourary' Giants that have come to BHRR over the years; we embrace them with loving, patient and giving arms.

WELCOME to BHRR our wee sweet ladies! Both are about 3; yet as we get to know them and handle them more; we can better determine their ages. They were listed as AlsatianX's. Possible Husky in there. It is of no matter for they are all 100% beautiful CUTIES! 🙂

ARC has given them their vaccines before they arrived to BHRR's care, they both need baths, grooming, heartworm testing, presurgical bw, to be spayed, heartworm medications, BHRR's Petal needs her one eye looked at and is having hair loss.

BHRR's Petal & BHRR's Rose – June 4th, 2012

I have been watching BHRR's Hailey and monitoring and sadly, I have not noted an improvement after the one injection. Her next one is coming up on June 8th and everything crossed!

Once we get the total monies tallied up from the Critter Jungle Rescue Garage Sale, we shall also be splitting that 50/50 between BHRR's Hailey's and BHRR's Emma's Vet Bills to date.

Donations to her growing Vet Bills can be made in the following ways.

I gave BHRR’s Hailey her first of four Cartrophen injections last night. Her one Vet wanted me to do a 1.5 ml once a week instead of 1.4 ml; so this is the new protocol.

She was so awesome! As usual! AND given some BHRR Journey Biscuits as a reward for being so brave! With so much that she has been going though and with how many strangers have been handling and treating her; she is understandably a bit unsure when her collar is taken; so; lots of praise and treaties on hand for this brave girl!

I also meant to post on her previous blog that a FNA biopsy was taken of a sudden small lump found on her one hip. The immediate Vet concern was a MCT yet phewwww; just cellular debris found! 🙂
