BHRR’s Apollo is a 21 month old(Born August 1st, 2008), neutered, utd on vaccines, fawn with partial black mask, male Great Dane that came to BHRR as an o/s on May 17th, 2010 with an injury that we were unaware of. We were contacted on May 15th, 2010 about taking in a Great Dane from a home – what was written to us – We are unable to manage him due to our family situation and our subdivision. It is not the best life for him, and he deserves that – that had purchased him from another home on April 3rd, 2010. He has been in at least three homes before coming to BHRR. His past home was very responsible in neutering him plus updating him on vaccines. Upon arrival to BHRR, he was not a quite acting normal in activity nor eating habits(not abnormal for dogs settling in) and appeared to be slightly stiff in the hind end; especially on the left leg. At that time there was no heat, swelling, noticeable pain upon exam yet dogs can be very stoic. Upon close monitoring and putting him on Deramaxx 100 mg for 10 days along with rest, there was no marked improvement yet instead a huge and sudden decline in his movement to the point that he then required assistance in getting on his feet. X-Rays and two more Vet consults/exams were then done, one with an ortho specialist; Dr. Philibert and Apollo has been diagnosed that he has a meniscal knee injury and that his cruciate is most likely affected and his prognosis is poor if not treated surgically. His past owner cared enough to not have him placed in a pound or shelter with high risk of being pts and therefore surrendered him to BHRR and we hope that you will please consider helping him….even $5.00 is not too little.

OR you can call Liston Animal Hospital at (613) 591-0966 to pay on Apollo’s Bill directly by Visa or M/C – Apollo’s bill is under the account name of ‘Apollo Boers.’ Dr. Liston was the Vet that did both BHRR’s Jaxson’s and BHRR’s Potter’s leg amputations in 2009 and BHRR’s Ava Marie’s first of two required cruciate repair surgeries on May 21st, 2010 and her second is tentative for July 2010.
Until Apollo’s surgery on Friday July 2nd, he shall be on his continued treatment plan of crate rest and Deramaxx 1.5 -2 tabs of 100 mg daily. With our upcoming PHASE II Fencing for the BHRR dogs this weekend, several shall have the opportunity to meet Apollo and also at our next BHRR Mini’s Open House at the end of this month. I truly hope he enraptures you as he has done with all that he has met to date and that many more have the chance to meet him and perhaps then love him too and consider donating to his cause. We do find ourselves once more, humbly reaching out to everyone to please send some support to Apollo in his own time of need. Thank you from my own heart in advance.
Update: July 2nd – 1:34 PM: BHRR’s Apollo is out of surgery and Dr. Liston said that his ACL was strong and large and looked great without any abnormality or injuries discovered. However; it was Apollo’s PCL(posterior cruciate ligament – back) that had a partial tear along with a small tear in the meniscus. Both tear/damaged areas have been ‘trimmed’ off and repaired along with nylon placed such that it runs across the knee per standard procedure. Dr. Liston indicated that usually this type of injury in his experience has been related to severe trauma such as being in something like a car accident whereby the knee can take a terrible pounding. Then one can often also find injuries to the Medial Collateral Ligament (MCL) yet the rest of Apollo’s knee looked very sound. There is no longer any ‘clicking’ sounds after Dr. Liston was done with surgery. Dr. Liston was a bit surprised by this PCL tear findings when he opened up Apollo’s knee yet things went wonderfully and all has been repaired and I shall be bringing him home later today.
